The true test of a company is how they handle returning to a project when the outcome doesn’t produce the expected results. Eager Beaver was exceptional in identifying and resolving the issue. They delivered superior customer service. Having utilized Eager Beaver for a few projects I continue to be impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of Shane. And most recently Shane #2 delivered outstanding service by identifying a solution to resolve the situation. He’s definitely an expert in his trade! I highly recommend Eager Beaver.

Completed all the work in 1 day. When we discovered the section of our flooring had to replaced I had anticipated that we would have to schedule another service call. However, they started on it immediately and finished it the same day. Worker's were extremely polite and had great personalities.

Shane provided a quote, and we accepted. After working out the schedule, his craftsman Chris came and started by removing the existing steam shower, and completing the reinforcement frame work, prior to completing tile work. The level of detail Chris uses, is very impressive. He saved us some extra work on a false wall that houses a pocket door, by reinforcing the inside face to hold new tile. Our project took approximately two weeks, and the outcome is outstanding. This was our first time using Eager Beaver, but I promise they will be only tile contractor at our house if future work is needed. Chris is prompt, informative, and outstanding at his craft. Overall experience was extremely pleasurable, and Shane is very attentive to his quote, managing costs, and schedule. If you are looking for a great experience in tile work, you've found the right company.
Description of Work: Needed to replace an existing steam shower with a new tile master shower. Work order included demo of existing shower, relocating receptacle using power from steam unit, and all tile work including shower pan, niche's, and fixtures.

Very well, Shane Halpin was very prompt and thorough when he visited our house to review what needed to be done. Prior to the appointment date, I received emails confirming my appointment. Stayed home from work to be there, but on the day of the appointment, I was informed that the technician called out sick. On the same day, he re-scheduled me for a date 13 days later, without confirming whether that date fit my schedule. It did not, so I told him via email that it looked like I needed to call someone else, because my wife wanted to job done sooner. The email I received in return accused me of having a lack of compassion and said it was "a turnoff." What I had was a conflict in schedule. Lack of professionalism.

Response from Eager Beaver Handyman Service
I was tasked with rescheduling a week's worth of appointments due to an employee getting the flu. I sent an email to offer our next available appointment and to let me know if there was a conflict. I received a response of how disappointed he was and that a technician being sick was "none of his business, and shouldn't effect his appointment." He said he would get someone else to do the work. I accepted his response but noted my surprise to his reaction and lack of compassion. I will note that we have worked for the client on two other occasions with good results.

Both Shane's were extremely kind and professional. When I hadn't gotten the new fire alarms to be installed he went and got them for me even checking two stores for the best value. My old doorbell was cracked and I had bought a new one and never gotten around to replacing it so he did it for me. I would definitely use them again!

Excellent... on a tight schedule with a new bed, mattress and bed frame being delivered at 9:00 am. Called Eager Beaver the day before, gave them the tight time line and they arrived at 7:45 am and finished by taking out the bed frame by 8:45am. Great work especially under the difficult circumstances.

Got it scheduled quickly. Shane arrived early and completed the work while I wasn't at home. He followed the directions I left for him, for the most part and also hauled away the old materials. I was referred by a friend who found Eager Beaver on Angieslist and had a great experience. Shane and his electrician arrived on a Sunday and got right to work. They safely ran an outlet and a port for my HDMI cable behind my new flatscreen. The painter came the following day and repaired the drywall and painted like it never happened. I was so impressed I got an Angieslist membership just to leave a review.

Eager Beaver was an hour late. I spent less than 5 minutes supervising the crew, just to get a read on them, and then went to doing yard maintenance on the house. I then received a text from Shane, demanding that I "do not hawk over my guys. Let them do their job." I was in no rush for the day, and I had no problem letting them work. They left to get supplies, after already having had been late, and were gone for another hour. I called Shane asked him why didn't they bring the supplies with them. He yelled at me and told me he was going to call his guys and pull them off the job. He threatened me several times. I asked him please do not do that. I honestly felt he made me feel like a fish out of water. They had taken my door jam off and left. It was 5:30, and one of they guys told me it was going to be another 30 minutes or so. I told him it was okay I just wanted it done right no matter how long it took. Remind you Shane told me it was a 2 hour job. When the guy told me how much I owed, he gave me a price higher than the original estimate. I asked Shane why, and he blew up on me. He threatened to put a lien on my house for the work done if I didn't pay. I never once told him that I wasn't going to pay him. I just didn't understand the difference. He was intimidating and verbally abusive. I paid him in full, but only so I would never have to deal with him again. He was mocking me on the phone. I have never ever in my life been talked to like Shane talked to me. He was very, very abusive. He would not let me talk at all. I asked him to please caIm down and he never did just kept yelling. I had a friend with me the first thing she asked me: "Where did I get his name from?" She told me several times to hang up because she could hear him yelling at me. When his guys left, one of them shook my hand and I was so upset they didn't have a receipt for me all he could do was show the invoice on HIS phone not mine. I called my husband he wanted me to pay him just to be rid of him so that is what I did. Please do not call this guy. He is very abusive. I wouldn't want anybody to go through what I did yesterday. I am only writing this review to keep someone from going through this. Oh, and by the way I still don't have a receipt .

Response from Eager Beaver Handyman Service
To new clients reading this review: There are a small percentage of people in the world that believe their wealth entitles them to treat people badly. I assure you that I didn't use profanity or disrespectful language in person or on the phone. After being unable to get a word in I simply let the client know that we will not be accepting any work requests from her in the future and that she was not the kind of client I wanted to ad to my roster. I also expressed my displeasure with how she treated myself and my technicians. Her review is a direct and inaccurate retaliation because I was the first person to stand up and call her out. I take great care to treat people with dignity and respect. However, I am a human being and there is a threshold as to how I will allow myself to be treated. First let me say that when I realized that the client was driving down from Raliegh to supervise the repair of a door that was kicked in I knew this was going to be a tough customer. I take being punctual very seriously and communication even more important. Two hours before the appointment time I called the client to ask if we could push our arrival time back one hour. This was so we could finish the appointment before hers without leaving any loose ends. I ASKED if that would negatively affect her plans and she said no. If she would have said yes, I would have pulled them off the job and arrived at her home at the originally scheduled time. I instructed my technicians to arrive onsite, confirm that my estimate was accurate, measure the door jamb, and confirm that supplies were locally available. While attempting to do this, the client began being rude, questioning their ability to fix it perfectly, and being generally condisending. They reported that they approved of my estimate and were heading to the Lowes nearby to get supplies. During their time in transit I received one of many calls from the client asking me why the technicians didn't arrive with the necessary door jamb and casing. When I experienced her condisending attitude first hand I felt compelled to cancel the work order which would have been a first in almost 5 years of business. My technicians reluctantly returned with the supplies and finished the door repair to our usual high standard. The client and several other people literally inspected the door jamb with a magnifying glass, and it passed after 10 mins of inspection. Then I got another call asking why there was a slight overage between the quote and the final bill. I explained that the supply allowance quoted was just that, AN ALLOWANCE. The actual receipts were presented for reimbursement with no mark up. Again the client talked to me in a belittling way that I did not appreciate Contrary to the clients description of my actions, I know the truth. I explained that i did not wish to work for her in the future. If i was actually acting the way described in the review I would not be in business. I do however retain the right to not subject myself or my technicians to hostile work environments. I will continue working for my existing clients that trust and treat us with respect and I will try to avoid the 2% of clients that make being a service provider very difficult. And the invoice and receipt was emailed immediately before payment was received.

I am writing a review for work that I had done over a year ago, which goes to show you how displeased I was with the disrespect of their owner Shane. Before I go on I do want to say that the actual workers that came out were very professional, courteous, and friendly. I had little issue with the quality of work, they were hard workers. However, there were many issues with scheduling and communication, some of which were caused by weather and many of which were not. All in all, there were many blips along the way that started with a forecasted rain event (which I understand) and were followed up by a lot of communication issues on the reschedules. I had difficulty interpreting all of the work order alerts in terms of what was still scheduled for certain days and what wasn't. Essentially there were still appts on my calendar that I had to reach out and try to figure out if they were postponed since nothing proactive was sent. I had to reach out to pry for answers, which were many times ignored or met with cold/short responses. I needed to know a schedule since my wife and I work full time and we do not have the luxury of being around all day so that workers can show up when it is convenient for them. We also have dogs that we need to make arrangements for when work is being done to the house and we do that as a courtesy to workers since they bark a lot and can be annoying. Aside from some of the scheduling issues, I had a MAJOR problem with the way the owner Shane handled situations and the comments he made towards me. He was very disrespectful and abrasive in many cases. I know this company has A ratings (which is why I chose them to begin with) but be very careful and look at the F ratings as well and they way he responds. It will tell you all you need to know about his style if you do run into unforeseen circumstances. He essentially marginalizes all bad reviews and combatively deflects blame back to the customer with minimal empathy. If you are the owner of a company you should never say these ignorant things to clients. There are clearly some issues, despite the A ratings, in need of improvement. I am sure most minor projects go off without a hitch and it isn't an issue, but everything does not always go smoothly. When I went back and read some of the bad reviews and the way he responded it made a lot more sense to me in terms of how I was treated. Due to the way I was treated throughout the process I emailed Shane in hopes of receiving some sort of discount before I had to make the final payment, but this is what he responded with in an email titled “FYI” after he already sent me another e-mail saying no discount as he felt it was all weather related (which does not exempt poor communication): “I give money back all the time for things that go wrong that I could have prevented. But this is just not one of those cases. No offense, but your dogs are the only reason you had to come home early to accommodate the painter. I know you had expectations, but we all have to accept set backs. If my job was easy, everyone would be doing it.” #1 Bad communication can be prevented. #2 I mean really, an owner of a company blaming his poor spontaneous scheduling practices on the client's dogs? Wow. Hope none of you have any dogs! This pertained to one day me receiving a call at work and asking if a painter could come by my house within 1 hour. Not to mention I tried days earlier to determine this with no response. Shane claimed only outdoor work had to be done, but that was false since some indoor trim work had to be done so the dogs had to be secured by me. #3 Do you like to be patronized when paying 3K? I don’t. #4 Do you like dealing with egotistical owners that self promote how amazing they are at their jobs? Doubt it. And here was his next most telling response after I further detailed out all of the issues for his awareness: “How about this. If the invoice isn't paid by Friday I'll take you to court. Enough said.” (For the record, I never once threatened to not pay. In fact I stated I fully expect to pay in a prior email to him) Here were some of the other responses I received from Shane the owner throughout the process: "I was surprised to hear how you reacted to that" (in response to my disappointment around the lack of communication of leaving my house during a low probability rain event that day) "Let's call it a night please. I'll be in touch tomorrow" (in response to me trying to get confirmation on work being done so I could make plans - never head back till 4 days later). When there was a response 4 days later it was "Working on it as we speak. Please pay quickbooks in the meantime." (always very quick to communicate on pymts) Believe me when I say these were just the highlights… there is much more boring detail further proving my point. All I will say is that it took me this long to do this review because of the overwhelming details involved and how terrible this experience was. It is single-handedly the worst customer experience I have EVER had. If I can stop one person from using this company and experiencing what I went through I will consider it a success. Please take caution in using this provider as there are many other hard working companies that pride themselves on communication and genuinely care and value your money/satisfaction. This company only cares about payment and treats you as another # especially now that they have built a good base of A ratings that they can throw in your face when your experience is not good.

To future clients reading the above review please note that the length and tone directly reflects what it was like to work for this client. Weather was our only obstacle, and I was held directly responsible for it. I could spend 20 minutes to reflect back a year and a half ago in an effort to respond to each of the many points the client has made, but I'm just not willing to do that. I stand by my statistics that show a 98% approval rate for both professionalism and my quality of work. I am simply a man that started a company, slowly gained employees, and for 4.5 years provided honest work with fair pricing in an industry riddled with dishonest contractors. I have said it in other responses to malicious reviews that there is a small percentage of clients that you cannot please, and this is another example. SIncerely, Shane Halpin
