The workers did a great job. They actually married the flooring in the bedrooms to the existing hallway floors and it looks flawless! They we're a pleasure to work with.

Owners accommodated our schedule in completing the work while we were away on vacation. We returned home to beautiful new hardwood floors. Andrew & Marilyn gave us great suggestions on the color, board size and how to transition existing flooring in foyer to new flooring in the living room. We are quite pleased with Buff & Coat and appreciate their attention to detail.

Andrew and Marilyn accommodated my odd schedule to provide service when I was available. Their pricing is extremely reasonable. Their crew arrived on time each day. The crew took care to seal off the work area to minimize dust in the rest of the house. I am 100% satisfied.
Description of Work: This is the second time I have used buff and coat to refinish hardwood floors in my home. I needed floor color and finish matched to existing flooring. I had water damage, and had to remove and replace a significant section of hardwood. Buff and coat matched the new hardwood perfectly with the older undamaged hardwood flooring.

They were saviors! Our first contractors only completed half of the kitchen project and did a horrible job. They said it would be 4-6 weeks before they could start back working. Buff & Coat was able to complete the work within three days. They did an excellent job! I will definitely recommend them and absolutely use them, again.

Buff and Coat subcontracts out the work. The finished job was below par on the steps and the upstairs. The color was nice. The people were friendly. I had the first floor done and we had to be out of the house for two to three days once they started staining. They started on a Tuesday I believe. Buff and Coat state that they do not move furniture but they highly recommend this company called All Around Movers managed by someone named Lonnie. I mentioned wanting to get my own movers and trying to get B&C's schedule to work with the movers. Andrew said he just recommends All Around Movers because they come in and out the same day. My furniture had to be moved into the garage and the basement. Meanwhile Buff and Coat did not warn me about removing clothes from linen closets and protecting my rooms behind closed doors. The level of dust was incredible and their staff kept opening my doors and one time let my cat and dog free to go wild on newly done floors after we left about 5 pm. They would bust open my bedroom doors without knocking while I was in bed or dressing.. They stained my staircase in a sloppy manner often getting it on my white trim paint and the light blue walls. I did not care about a little over-stain on the balusters because I planned to replace them. B&C did not make the new floors level upstairs and left narrow holes where the ballusers were reinstalled. I had them come back and fix it once and it made it a lot better than before but not as it should be as can be seen in the pictures. We could walk on the floors freely on Sunday and on that day the floors were destroyed by Lonnie's crew. All around movers lifted up my piano and dropped it flat on its back on my new floors causing what Buff and Coat claims is $1600 worth of damages. This does not include the destruction to my beautiful old piano.. Then Andrew of Buff and Coat told me that the "highly recommended" movers had done this to their customers twice before. The question is why would they be recommending All Around Movers and Lonne if he did this before. Another question is are they still recommending him to others. All Around Movers promised in writing to pay but still haven't 7 months. The movers had no insurance even though the contract states that they do. I wonder what Buff and Coat gets out the deal for recommending an irresponsible moving company. Clearly they get thousands in more work for damage repair. I recommend getting a company with insurance that takes responsibility for the work and the moving. I recommend calling the insurance company to verify coverage..

Response from Buff & Coat
Buff and Coat is tardy in their response to this review due to it being filed with Angies List six months after the work was completed. Also Angie's List normally sends an alert to the service provider for response but due to a change in their format Buff & Coat was not notified and they only came upon this review in December. Regarding the workmanship, the homeowner was pleased with the floors. There was a color variance in the nosing in a couple of places which was reworked to her satisfaction. Had B&C known in advance that the pickets were going to be replaced with metal balusters they would have recommended to remove them prior to sanding which would have allowed for a more uniform sanding and staining and the holes would be filled. The holes were created when the wooden pickets were removed which occurred after our work was complete. The installer of the balusters is responsible and should have filled the holes. Prior to the job start the owner was advised there would be touch up painting required on the staircase . Regarding the movers; B&C has no affiliation with All-A-Round Movers. The moving contract is between the homeowner and the moving company which holds the liability. B&C receives no referral fee or kick backs. Typically B&C provides the name of two moving companies and the homeowner makes the arrangements. At the time of the incident (floor damage by movers) B&C provided an estimate for the homeowner and also contacted Lonnie Craig of All-A-Round Movers to explain the extent of the damage. Mr. Craig said he would take care of it and would arrange with the homeowner. A few weeks later B&C contacted both parties regarding the repairs and to schedule the repair work. The response from the owner was that she was waiting on Lonnie Craig. B&C commented to the home owner that on a job 2 years ago that All-A-Round Movers had scuffed a floor and that they took responsibility and paid for the repair. Lonnie Craig said he was waiting on the homeowner to schedule the work. It appears there may have been a communication gap between the two. Buff & Coat will complete the repair when the homeowner and moving company resolve their issue. Buff and Coat is a hardwood floor service company that strives to satisfy each and every customer. Unfortunately Buff & Coat is unable to resolve issues beyond the scope of their work.

Andrew and Marilyn estimated the job, took a deposit, and scheduled a complete refinishing of the floor approximately 10 days ahead of the scheduled start. The floor crew consisted of two workers who arrived as scheduled and sanded the flooring smooth. It absolutely looked as if new flooring had been laid. The water damage was removed, and new boards were installed in those two locations. The lead floor man matched the stain to the other oak flooring in our home, and applied the stain on day 1. On day 2, the two workers returned and put down a coat of polyurethane, and let it dry for about 3 hours. Then another coat of poly with a bit of amberizer which gave the refinished floors almost an exact match to the oak flooring throughout the house. This was really an easy process. Ahead of the work, my wife and I removed all of the kitchen items, refrigerator, dining table, bar stools, and counter items. The workers covered the cabinets in plastic and sealed the doors before sanding. Things went very smoothly and I would highly recommend NC Buff & Coat for any hardwood floor refinishing issue. Andrew and Marilyn are very nice people. One note of caution: be prepared to leave some windows open. The smell of wood stain and polyurethane can be very strong. That was not a problem for us, we opened windows for the 2 days required to complete the work. Day 3 the smell is no longer an issue.
Description of Work: I had the hardwood floors in my kitchen area refinished. Approximately 300 sq. ft. The hardwoods were originally prefinished, oak flooring, that were added by a prior home owner, over a linoleum kitchen floor. The rest of the house was originally finished in oak hardwoods. The kitchen floor was well worn, bleached from the sun, and had two water damage spots. The color was not all that close to the hardwoods in the rest of our home. It really looked like it needed to be pulled up and replaced.

Great experience!!! We got an estimate from Andrew a few months prior to when we were planning on having the work done. When we got closer to knowing our timeline we reconnected. Andrew was always prompt in his response and was able to schedule us to the exact dates we needed to work around a larger project. We changed our minds a few times leading up to the work...they worked with us on re quoting based on our changes. Andrew and his wife came over to show us all the colors and finishing options. When it was time for the work to be done they arrived as scheduled and were able to accommodate a few last minutes fixes that were needed with the floor (hidden by previous cabinets). The floors look fabulous. They cleaned up everything we had agreed upon so no surprises and minimal dust. I felt extremely comfortable leaving the employees in my house while the work was being done and we were in a hotel for 2 days. The floors were ready and we were able to walk on them and move everything back within 24 hours.

Andrew was professional, prompt, and knowledgable about his skill. He throughly explained the process of sanding, then sealing my floors. It would take approximately 2-3 hours to sand (hand sanding the edges too) and then two coats of stain and sealler would be another few hours. The process would take approximately 5-6 hours total. Complete drying would take overnight. He did suggest replacing the floor as it would be "about the same price." But I liked the character of the floor and wanted to keep it. After we finally scheduled an appointment for 1:00pm, his 'crew' arrived at 9am. I rearranged my schedule and allowed them to begin. I had to run out to the bank to make payment, and by the time I got back (within an hour) the workers were gone. Turns out they just added a top coat of sealer on top of the dirty floors, sealing the dirt in good. His price was a minimum of $450, I had given a $50. deposit, and he expected $400. I didn't pay him. When I asked why he didn't sand, why he didn't re-stain, and why he sealed the dirty floor, he told me it didn't need to be sanded and it's fine the way it is. I was floored! He got good reviews here, but I wouldn't hire him nor recommend him to anyone.

Response from Buff & Coat
Buff & Coat met with the customer and evaluated the floor on Dec 10th 2014. It was a 230 square feet parquet floor with many loose tiles an excessive wear and staining. We offer two processes one being a complete sand and finish and the other a light sand and with 2 coats of polyurethane. We generally do not deep sand and finish parquet floors, and with the loose tiles it was not an option for this floor. The limitations of a buff and coat were thoroughly explained to the owner such as a buff & coat is a light sand and will not remove stains or graying from excessive wear. The floor was indeed hand sanded as this was the best technique with the loose tiles. In fact it is better than buffing with a parquet floor where the grain of each tile runs a different direction. After sanding the floor was vacuumed and then coated with polyurethane. the owner was told that the job would take about 2 hours 3 at the most. The crew was finished in 2.5 hours. The work was completed on January 16th, 2015. Buff & Coat performed the work in good faith according to the agreement.

Andrew Robertson came out to give me a quotation on buffing and cleaning my floors prior to the sale of my home. How's that for a nice guy!

Gorgeous! Our old floors were from 1950 and had never been refinished. They had stains and were bare in some places. There were gaps and a spot that was worn pretty deep and needed to be filled. The job was quick and cost efficient. The new floors are so beautiful we wish we would have done this years ago. Buff and Coat are professional and kind. It was a pretty standard job with no issues. We have 2 additional rooms to finish and we will definitely hire Buff and Coat to finish them.

Starting 3 weeks before the work was to be done, I tried to have Andrew come out to my house and let me choose the stain color and finish. After several attempts, he NEVER CAME OUT until the morning of the refinishing. He had his worker apply a few stain colors on the floor and did NOT bring out any samples of the different finishes, just gave me verbal info about the differences. I was unsure of what finish I wanted and not showing me any samples was ridiculous. I was given approximately 10 minutes of the morning the work was to begin to choose the stain and finish that I wanted. I felt extremely rushed!!!! Let's face it, I was probably going to have to live with this decision for several years! I would have stopped the whole process right there and then, but I had already packed everyone up to move out and had made living arrangements for those 4 days. Not an easy task as anyone with a family and pets will attest to. When I finally returned home and saw the floor, I immediately began to cry. It was HORRIBLE!!! Some parts of the floor looked like it had been walked on for years while other parts looked spotted and patchy. Several boards were terribly streaked and uneven. Now I have had hardwood floors put in a 5,000 sq. ft. home we had built. I know that hardwood floors are not even colored. That's what makes them beautiful, the character of the wood. However, it was obvious that the men who applied the stain did NOT know what they were doing. Either that or they were terribly rushed. Andrew kept insisting that it was the old wood which was not the best quality compared to the new wood that was just replaced. There is some truth to that, BUT, the same unevenness and spottiness of the stain was very apparent on the new wood boards as well. Also, there was dust and debris everywhere! They didn't clean up at all. They even left the door to my unfinished attic open, which meant that in the middle of winter, I had been heating the outdoors for days! There was stain which had been splattered above the baseboards and on my stair arm rails which cannot be removed. I had to have my contractor come in and paint the ruined baseboards and clean up. Andrew did admit that there were boards that were not properly done. Also, he said that the splinters and spaces of some of the boards should have been puttied and filled, resanded and restained. The finish was awful, too! He did offer to put down another coat of finish. It was clear to anyone that there had not been enough finish applied! For all this mess and inconvenience he offered me around a 10 percent discount. I didn't think the job was worth one cent, but I offered to pay him half of the original quote. Long story short, I paid him what he demanded, although this is not over. I'll most likely have to take other steps because I do have to have it all REDONE! I found Andrew rude and short with me once he knew that I was dissatisfied with the job. I am so unhappy and have bought several throw rugs to cover this mess until I have the time to move out once again and have the flooring done by a real professional. Please do yourself a favor and NEVER use Buff and Coat to do any work for you!
Description of Work: I had to have some hardwood flooring removed and replaced due to water damage. The new wood butted up against the original wood flooring so all the wood flooring had to be sanded and stained in order for everything to match. I had to move my family and pets out of the house for 4 days. Unfortunately, the work was so bad that I am going to have to hire someone new and have everything redone. Not only do I have to pay to have the job redone, I now have to move my family and pets out of my home for another 4 days!

Response from Buff & Coat
Buff & Coat was hired to sand and finish 460 SF by Creative Flooring Concepts for their client (member name removed). Creative flooring had installed an unfinished partial floor as a repair that joined into an existing prefinished floor. Buff Coat sanded and finished all to make uniform. The work was completed in two days as scheduled. (member name removed) agreed to select the color (stain) and finish the morning the work began. A small section of floor was sanded and several colors were applied to the floor for (member name removed) to see what it would actually look like on her floor. This is normal procedure and is performed in this fashion on every floor. (member name removed) selected the color and another family member concurred with the choice. Time spent was approximately 1 hour. After the floor was completed (member name removed) requested that Creative Flooring and Buff & Coat come back to review the work. She was disappointed in the results. In the sand out process Buff & Coat discovered that the grade of wood for the existing floor was inferior to the new wood that was installed. It was a prefinished low grade #2. In the prefinished process, manufactures can mask open defects with filler epoxy for holes and then apply a heavy dark coat of finish. Not only were there open defects, there were dry rot streaks and the material was a mix of white and red oak. Each species takes a stain differently and do not color uniformly when site finished. Buff & Coat offered to rework the floor to minimize the more contrasting areas. Buff & Coat rescheduled to do the work on the immediate Monday following the Friday completion. Pursuant to a conversation with (member name removed) on Sunday, she opted to not rework the floor as she said it still would not be right due to substantial variance in the floor. (member name removed) requested that Buff & Coat put in writing their findings with the floor and submit it to her insurance adjuster. Buff & Coat accommodated with a letter to the adjuster. (See attached) (member name removed) felt that her floor should be replaced as it could not be site finished and restored as original. It is our understanding that insurance did indeed agree to replace the floor. Approximately 2-3 weeks later (member name removed) called Creative Flooring requesting a reduction in price of 50% for the sand and finish. Buff & Coat offered a 10% discount to Creative Flooring which was the approximate cost of the partial rework which was in turn passed on to Ms. Curtis. Creative Flooring Concepts found the work acceptable and paid their bill in full. Buff & Coat was given a poor rating not for poor workmanship but rather in retaliation for not agreeing to 50% price reduction. Email to Insurance adjuster: Johnathon: Per our conversation regarding the (member name removed) hardwood floor, I am summarizing the results of the sand and finish we completed last week. The floor we sanded was primarily made up of a prefinished oak 350 sf. The balance approx 120 sf was newly installed unfinished select red oak. The new was installed to replace the water damaged wood floor. The grade chosen was to match the apparent select grade of the existing floor. Our job was to sand all, both new and the existing prefinished so as to make for a uniform floor finish. It is important to note that the prefinished product had a very thick dark stain. The complete sand out revealed that the existing floor was a low grade wood product that was cloaked with a heavy factory baked on finish that masked much of the characteristics of the wood such as open defects that were sealed with an epoxy filler, mixed wood species (white and red oak) that take stains differently, rot streaks that show very light and do not accept the stain due to cellular damage. These variances are easily masked in factory finish processing as each piece is individually handled. Not so with a floor. The prefinished was in fact a very cheap grade and is normally sold as a character grade or #2. Comparing the price to what Creative Flooring concepts put in is approx $4.00 select vs. $1.50 to $2.00 per sf. #2 It is clear to me that the manufacturer of the existing prefinished has pulled the wool over the eyes of the consumer. It was our attempt to restore (member name removed) her floor in what would be our normal procedure. The problem for (member name removed) is that her existing floor was a camouflaged product. It had the appearance of a high end product but in essence was fraudulent. The existing flooring was not a sandable product in terms of restoring it as new original Only the factory process could mask and hide the defects of the low end wood grade to pass as a high end wood floor. I feel (member name removed) has been deceived as to the value of her floor and there is no floor finishing company that can change the inherent characteristics of her floor. I believe she acted in good faith, as did Creative Flooring Concepts and Buff & Coat Hardwood Floor Renewal. The approach taken was actually the least costly vs full replacement. Please call to discuss if you need clarification. Sincerely, Andrew Robertson Buff & Coat

Andrew spent about 30 minutes reviewing the problem area, indicated he would see about finding the materials on Monday and would get back to me. Made no committment about the scope of the job or even if what I wanted could be done. It is now Thursday afternoon and I have heard nothing from them. Called yesterday morning, left a message simply asking for an update. Have never received a call back. We have the house up for sale, Andrew knew this, and would like to have this floor fixed. If they can't do it, feel the job is too small, whatever, I think the customer at least needs a call back.

Response from Buff & Coat
Buff & Coat did respond to the client. The client was not given a specific call back date as the material required had to be located. The client was told we would begin to look for the materials Monday as he stated. We contacted several vendors of which two said they would try to find it for us. The supppliers were unable to locate the wood after a week of searching. We called the client back to inform him we would not be able to do the repair. We gave the client an alternative price quote to replace the floor with a similar product for the one room and he said he did not want to spend that amount of money. The client said he would get back to us if he decided to go that route. We have not heard back from the client.

I called Buff and Coat to help me fix my stairs. We had a runner on our stairs for 7 years and when we removed it, there was very obvious sun bleaching between the part of the step covered by the runner and not covered. Andrew was available the following week to come to my house to look at my stairs and give me a quote. I saw him on Monday and was able to schedule the work to be done on Thursday and Friday of the same week. He was very professional and the quote was very reasonable. His employee arrived on time, and did excellent work. I was very impressed with the quality of the workmanship. My stairs looked brand new and matched the other existing hardwoods very well. I would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Sand and refinish 9 steps and landing.
