We used (and reviewed) AFC Granite in October 2011 when we were initially planning to put the house on the market. At that time we upgraded our kitchen from laminate to granite countertops and Allan did a great job with not only his selection of New Venetian Gold slabs, but with the installation itself. The only hiccup we had at the time was delay in communication and returning phone calls. However, the experience was so great that I wrote that we'd used him again.
It's now almost a year later and we decided against selling but opted to stay put and renovate/expand the kitchen. This resulted in needing the kitchen countertops reconfigured and more countertop installed.
Last year they had a receptionist of some kind who answered the phone and took messages. This year I merely got their voicemail system when calling. I left a message through their website form as well as two voicemails and didn't get a response for approximately two weeks. On my third call I finally had someone pick up the phone to speak to me. Allan and I spoke about the project, he offered another great quote, and told me to call him back when I was ready for him to pick up the old granite and take measurements.
When my general contractor told me the date we'd be ready for granite measurements, I began calling AFC again to schedule a meeting. When I didn't hear back for three days, I called again. Another few days passed and I called again. After TWO WEEKS of not getting a single return call, my husband finally drove out to the AFC Granite shop and asked someone to please contact us because we needed someone to come do measurements and pick up the old granite.
Allan called back the next day and arranged to come take measurements. When he arrived at the house he remembered us, and was perfectly pleasant and polite while discussing the project and taking his measurements for the new space. He then told us that he'd be able to install the countertops the following Friday. I asked him to call in advance to confirm that he'd be there Friday, and he said he would. By Wednesday we hadn't heard from him, so I called and left *another* voicemail asking for confirmation of Friday's due date. I heard nothing back. Since I heard nothing back, my husband and I opted to go to work on Friday as usual, rather than waste a vacation day sitting at home for something that might not come.
On Friday morning around 10:15 a.m., Allan called my husband and said he'd be at our house at 11 a.m. That wasn't the kind of and quot;advancedand quot; notice we wanted, but fortunately my husband was able to go home and meet Allan and his crew just as they arrived.
The granite looks great, the installation was tricky and they handled it well, and for a good price. I still would use them again AND heartily recommend them. However, I would tell anyone who asks to be prepared to get no return phone calls and to be wary about leaving voicemails that may not get listened to. I would also advice customers to be aware that they longest waiting time will be getting someone to the house for measurements, because the ability to make an appointment is the hardest part. Both times we've used AFC, the time from measurements to installation has been blessedly short, which is fantastic.
AFC does great work. They just need to hire a receptionist/appointment setter, which would significantly improve their customer service.
Boy am I glad I did! Allan did a GREAT job. I called for a phone quote a few weeks ago and received a call back the next day. I already had my specs and my choice of granite picked out, so he was able to tell me over the phone how much it would be. He quoted 61 sq ft of New Venetian Gold granite for $1900, and that included removal and disposal of my old countertops, a new stainless steel undermount sink and sealer on the newly laid granite. He told me I would be responsible for having a plumber come to install and reconnect my sink fixtures, which is pretty much the standard policy of all the places I contacted. The price was low because AFC does pre-fabricated orders as opposed to custom. What does this mean? Well, it means that I don't get to pick the actual granite slab for my counters, and I don't get to pick where on the slab I want them to cut out my template. This was of little concern to me, but was the main reason for the price drop (easily less than half of what another locally owned custom fabricator quoted me).
I called Allan back a couple days later and told him we had selected his company and asked that he come out to take his measurements. We made an appointment for a couple days later and he came and measured everything out. We talked about edging choices (he offered a few and we opted for bevel). He said he was able to install within a week, but as I was not available on the date he stated, I asked for install to be the following week. I put down a 50% deposit on the project.
He called me promptly on the following Monday morning and said he was ready. I arranged to be home on Tuesday (yesterday) to meet him at 10 a.m. Allan and his other crew member showed up on time and immediately got to work. They were friendly, professional and kept the area clean and free of debris the entire time they were there. They were in the house about 4 hours and got everything done! They didn't rush and definitely took their time to make sure everything was installed correctly. Upon my review of his workmanship I gladly handed over the check for the remaining balance.
The granite pieces Allan selected were lovely - very uniform pattern across all surfaces. The two seam cuts are very well hidden. The island piece is absolutely gorgeous. The edging is very well done and I only noticed two spots on the island where the sealer they put on was a bit heavy. A wet cloth over those spots within an hour after they left removed the excess though, and now it's smooth as silk across the whole surface.
All in all it was a great experience and I will definitely use AFC again in the next few months when we go to replace our master bathroom vanity tops. My husband and I hope to sell this current house and build a custom house next year - I'm also going to use Allan again to put in all countertops in the new house.
You can't go wrong with AFC! I am one VERY VERY happy customer!
