I fired this individual on Day 500 (he claimed the 180 days in the contract meant 180 days on site). The structure was incomplete. I had to finish many things myself. He lied about numerous things including that he was licensed at the time of signing the contract (a legal requirement in NC). He overcharged for most items and charged for completely unrelated things such as picking his daughter up from school or returning to his "warehouse" to collect a table saw because he had destroyed mine. He used strong arm tactics to get paid even when in dispute. He claimed breach of contract when we hadn't paid an invoice within three days - it was still in the mail. He crept up our 500' driveway one morning at 3am to post an invoice to the permit box (by this time I had video surveillance set up) - the invoice was for $14K for about 8 hours work (most of it remedial). I did laugh out loud when I read it and, obviously, had no intention of paying. He followed up with an email wishing me a happy easter. He was instructed by the local inspector to cut a small swale at one corner of the building. Instead, he rented a skid steer and drove around and around excavating about 12" of clay then dumping most of it on the root system of a 100 yr old pecan tree. We had to rent a mini excavator to undo the damage along with work from an arborist to restore the tree's health. He also demolished a French drain that he had installed as part of the contract, a dry stone wall that had been built only a few months earlier, tore up a brick path and cut a huge swathe across the gravel driveway. We filed suit but couldn't afford the escalating costs. Researching him, he didn't have the assets to pay anyway. But he did have two brand new vehicles by the time he walked off the job. He has a custodial criminal record for larceny which, sadly, the NC licensing board failed to find out when granting this person a license. I have compiled a 2-inch thick dossier showing the history of this horrific episode. The examples above are but a very small part. To this day, I still find things that are against code including dangerous electric wiring.
Description of Work: Contracted to build a large garage (32' x 30') with office upstairs, fully climate controlled, rustic board and batten cedar siding, standing seam metal roof, etc. This was a cost-plus contract; estimated to be $57K and completed within 180 days.
