They came on time, and did the work very well. The work men are always friendly and polite and very welling to talk to me about what they are doing. Mark explains what is going to be done and doesn't push me to spend more than I want to do. Poteat Landscaping has done three sets of plantings for me (buttterfly bushes a couple of years ago, crepe myrtle trees last spring and ferns and general clean up and landscaping last winter). I am very happy with their work and with the prices.
Description of Work: Mark's guys planted ferns and cleaned up an area where we had had a new well dug.

His team did not arrive on the day that they said and this was a concern for me because my dog gets growly around strange men, which I had told Mark. When they did come a day later, and without any notice, I saw the men blowing the leaves into my neighbor's yard. I ran out and told them to stop and told them that the leaves had to be taken to the curb. An hour later, they were still blowing the leaves into the yard! I insisted that they take the pile to the curb. When Mark showed up, he said that they didn't understand, etc. etc. He told me that he would be back in two weeks to finish the job and never came back. I left him several phone messages and email messages to which he never responded. I would never use this company or recommend them.
Description of Work: This company had good references for landscaping so I called them to give me an estimate for monthly yard maintenance and for blowing the leaves in the Fall. The estimate was a good one and Mark was very pleasant so I engaged him to begin with blowing the leaves in the yard to the curb.

I am sorry our work schedule did not "click" and we were not able to work for this customer. As customer wrote, we did do initial leaf-clean up and we actually never billed or received any payment from this customer because we could work within time contraints requested - example when in town, when dog not around, etc. We can not please every customer - we have to work within our system to remain effecient and profitable so that we can serve over 100 satisfied mainenance customers on a monthly basis. I, Mark Poteat, do care and felt badly that we could work for this customer and this is reason why I did not bill for any of the work done.

When I first read this review I thought the customer had the wrong company. Poteat Landscape gave this customer written estimate # 1198 for $790.00. Customer did not want to purchase a large stone that was included in the written estimate and Poteat Landscape reduced the price of the job to $535.00. The work was performed on September 27 and September 28 for $535.00. Poteat Landscape also delivered and planted customer an additonal 9 ferns at no cost to the customer - for free. Customer was satisfied with the project and paid invoice # 1430 for $535.00. Customer was pleased with the project and asked Poteat Landscape to mow their lawn, etc. on a routine basis. A few weeks later customer called office to set up maintenance work. Poteat Landscape did not call back as quickly as customer would have liked and became irate - we realized working for customer on a routine basis would not be good for our company or the customer - we were not the right fit. Customer has posted blatent falsehoods about Poteat Landscape and we are considering legal action. Poteat Landscape did not require a deposit for this project and paid in full only after customer was satisfied. Simply, if Poteat Landscape had really stolen money from customer why did they not call the police? Customer was upset that we did not want to continue a business realtionship and made up a fa;se report and posted on Angies List.

The initial phase of the project went very smoothly. Mark was available whenever I called him and he was able to do the work quickly. As soon as I paid him though, he became less responsive. His landscape proposal/drawing was what sold me to him. What I asked for in the design was that the new plants be easy to maintain, be drought resistant and deer resistant. I thought that it was a pretty simple and common request. His proposed drawing showed a variety of plants of different heights and colors all filling in the front of our house. The plants that were installed were much smaller than what appeared on the drawing, and there were huge gaps between the plants. He said they would grow in to be the size shown on the drawings and I believed him. Unfortunately, the deer started eating and gnawing at all our new plants immediately. I called to tell him that the deer were eating our plants and that is when Mark became unresponsive. He said that we have aggressive deer. After many calls and emails, he finally sent his new job supervisor to talk to me. I reviewed my concerns with him and he tried to get me to pay them more money to replace the plants to a larger size. I was furious as I?d already spent more than I wanted to and the plants he installed did not meet my simple requirements. I told him I would not be paying any more money and then he also disappeared. As a last resort, I emailed Mark and told him I would be submitting a bad review on Angie?s List and that, that would do more damage than writing a ?Company response? online which I see he has done quite a bit. He finally came by to talk to me and promised to make things right and replace all the plants. This was yet another promise he failed to fulfill. I would have much preferred if he told me the truth and saved me the aggravation of calling him and emailing him for 2 entire weeks. His office phone just goes to voicemail and no one ever calls you back. His cell phone?s mailbox often gets full and you can?t leave a message. There was one response from him saying that he was out of town and that he would take care of things. That was the last I heard from him. Like in other reports from other Angie's List members, he has a way of making you believe that he will follow through. Those reports about his unresponsiveness are dead on. He would set up meetings with me and not show up and make promises he did not keep. He admitted that he was a poor communicator and that he wanted to do the right thing but that is also one of his gimmicks. The excuses about traffic, not writing down his appointment, etc. all sound a little too familiar. It is definitely his pattern. His management/communication skills are sorely lacking. I would never use him again as I cannot take the aggravation. In summary, I am extremely disappointed in him. If he didn?t want to come and replace the plants, then he shouldn?t have strung me along and have me thinking that he just needed a reminder to come. I understand that he could be busy but I literally called and emailed him for two entire weeks straight after finding out that he doesn't respond to emails sent once in a while. After an entire year of trying to resolve my issues with Mark Poteat, I finally give up.
Description of Work: They replaced some overgrown shrubs and bushes in front of our house with some new plants. They added some plants in our backyard. They removed a sandbox and seeded the area with grass, installed a drainage pipe to take care of a flooding area on our property. They added mulch to our front yard area. They made a flagstone path to our back yard from our garage.

Response from Poteat Landscape
We completed project for customer and almost a year later customer contacted company and said plants were not doing well. Mark Poteat went by and talked with customer and she explained that she "had done nothing" with the plantings since we completed project. No care and no watering. Drought resistant and deer resistant does not mean nothing has to be done to the plantings - the plants are alive - not plastic. Mark Poteat felt bad for the customer and tried to think of how to make her happy. Supervisor also went by and discussed options with client - one option did include buying new plants that would be cared for by Poteat Landscape. Client, as she stated, was not prepared to buy new plants and then threatened to post a bad review on Angie's List if we did not give her new plants without compensation. At this point, we realized as being a company in business that if we gave in to threats of bad reviews after homeowner did nothing to maintain plantings, we would not be in business long. We stand by our work and have a few hundred satisfied customers. Mark Poteat did make the mistake of not telling customer that plants would not do well if nothing was done to maintain plantings - now, we do not assume clients know anything about plants and ensure they are educated about what has to done to ensure viability. Poteat Landscape stands by work performed and corrects mistakes when they occur but can not be responsible for homeowner's failure to take a direct interest in landscape if Poteat Landscape is not hired to for maintenance duties. Poteat Landscape corrects mistakes when they occur but surely does not give out money to prevent customers from posting false, negative reviews.

After the inital work was done, we began to see problems. Mark's workers did not properly install the drip irrigation line, failing to install the emitters on the lines and positioning the lines in the wrong positions causing many plants to die. In addition, there were numerous other problems with the irrigation. We had water running down our driveway for over a month due to his workers failing to shut off a valve properly. It took numerous calls to convince him that this was a problem, not the result of rainfall. Finally that problem was fixed. Another day when they worked on the irrigation system, the system ran all day long. We were alerted to this problem when our neighbor called us at work to tell us there was a flood in our yard. There were also problems with the plantings. It took numerous calls just to get all of the plants placed in the landscape. Even after all of our calls, incorrect, less expensive plants were put into the landscape. In addition when we did talk to Mark, he was always making promises about additional things he could easily do for us. Mark is a very pleasant and charming man so we always wanted to take him at his word. He was a bit scattered so some of the missed follow-ups we attributed to disorganization, however there were many times when it seemed to go far beyond being disorganized. Mark would regularly not return phone calls. It got so that the only way that we could get in touch with him was to call his secretary. She would apologetically promise to make sure that he returned our calls and only then would we eventually hear from him. On the rare occasions when we did see Mark, often by happenstance in the grocery store, he was always apologetic but his follow through did not really improve. Mark always had a litany of problems that prevented him from completing the job. The bottom line from our point of view was that after over a year from the start of the project this job was not completed. In addition, sitting in our expensively redone backyard was a source of irritation not joy because the dead plants served as a constant reminder of the aggravation that we had experienced trying to get this job done. The mistakes that were made could have been easily been forgiven if we had a sense that Mark was genuinely sorry about these errors and was going to correct them in a timely manner. Instead all that we sensed was excuses and avoidance. It would have been so easy to fix these things and show off a wonderfully done job by Mark. It should not be the customer?s job to force a business to follow through on their obligations, track down the owner of a business, and go through extraordinary time consuming and stressful procedures to just get someone to keep their word. It is very disappointing to have what could have been a beautiful backyard looking unfinished at this point in time. I would not recommend Mark to anyone due to his lack of responsiveness and professionalism.
Description of Work: We contracted with Mark Poteat (30160 Pharr Chapel Hill NC 27517) of Poteat Landscape to do a landscaping project in our backyard in the fall of 2009. We wanted the concrete in the backyard removed and replaced with pavers, sod and plantings. Mark was responsive in the beginning but failed to complete the project. The overall work was good thanks to the design work of Chris Brown (Triangle Landscaping Group) who was the person I could always rely on when I had a question or concern.

Mark Poteat and Poteat Landscape tried to satisfy customer but unfortunately could not. Poteat Landscape had employee, Chris Brown, create design for removing existing driveway and replacing driveway with 2 paver patios, sod lawn area, and plantings. Chris Brown worked for Poteat Landscape full-time and his job was to create design and deal with customer - that is what he did. Project began with Poteat Landscape contracting to remove 4 inch driveway and replace with pavers, plants, mulch, etc. 4 inch driveway turned into 8-12 inch-deep driveway creating many extra hours of labor and over 15 extra tons of concrete debris. Subsequently, additional fill-dirt and topsoil was required to reach the grade of the new project. Poteat Landscape did not charge 1 extra dollar to remove the 15 tons of concrete and deliver/spread fill-dirt and topsoil. Client had existing irrigation system installed by another company that had nothing to do with Poteat Landscape - there was no information or design available for Poteat Landscape to use as a reference. Project went well - patios, water fountain, plantings, new irrigation, installed. Poteat Landscape tried to help customer with their existing irrigation system - at no charge - and did have a hard time figuring out what the other company had done and eventually did correct problem again, for free. Project was completed and customer paid Poteat Landscape. Shortly thereafter, there was a drainage issue that had nothing to do with initial installation and Poteat Landscape spent money on materials and labor to correct problem, again, at no charge. We wanted customer to be satisfied. A few months went by and a few of the perennials that were planted died or were eaten by deer. Poteat Landscape had designer Chris Brown meet with customer to come up with different plants that might work better. Customer chose new plants and Poteat Landscape installed, again, at no charge. Mark Poteat met personally with customer over 40 times and had Chris Brown communicate/meet with customer repeatedly. Poteat Landscape removed over 15 tons of concrete at no charge, delivered and spread fill-dirt/topsoil at no charge, repaired irrigation system that was installed by another company at no charge, corrected drainage issue at no charge, and replaced plants with new plants customer requested at no charge. Mark Poteat tried repeatedly to satisfy customer. During this time period Mark Poteat moved into the same neighborhood where the homeowner lives. The homeowner threatened to try and embarass Mark Poteat and his family on the neighborhood list serve if Poteat Landscape did not do what they wanted. Mark Poteat does not make business decisions based on threats or blackmail - our work speaks for itself. Customer then posted a false statement on the neighborhood list serve saying that Poteat Landscape was out of business and company phone numbers were disconnected - they even posted incorrect phone number to "prove their point" that company phone number was not in service. The phone number posted by homeowner was not or never had been phone number of Poteat Landscape. Several customers of Poteat Landscape that also lived in the neighborhood pointed out the false statements to Mark Poteat and after that Mark Poteat and Poteat Landscape were done with customer. Mark Poteat and Poteat Landscape tried repeatedly to satisfy customer through meetings, sending paid designer to meet customer, doing free work for customer, etc., etc. and in the end customer was never satisfied and even resorted to making false statements about Mark personally. Customer even posted Mark Poteat's personal address on Angie's List in an attempt to harm Mark Poteat and his family. Poteat Landscape has over 300 references in the Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh area. Mark Poteat has built his company on repeat business and referrals. Mark Poteat tried to satisfy customer but this ovbiously did not happen. Please read the many positive customer reviews and give Mark Poteat a call and judge him and his company for yourself. Mark Poteat also has before, during construction process, and after project completion pictures available for viewing - Poteat Landscape transformed a concrete driveway into a wonderful garden.

We were trying to solve a water runoff problem from properties uphill from my own. Mr. Poteat was very professional over the phone, but he missed the first consultation appointment due to being stuck in traffic. At the second consultation appointment he was in a hurry and spent very little time investigating the part of the yard in question. Because he was in a rush to leave he did not have time to speak with our next-door neighbor who lives downhill from us and was also interested in hiring a landscaper. We were told that we would receive a quote in the next few days, but never received one, even after sending an email inquiry. It is possible that our job wasn't the right fit for his business but we were left waiting several days before contacting another landscaper (who took the job right away).
Description of Work: Requested help with drainage in yard, primarily installation of large drain pipe and gutter downspout tie-ins.

Mark Poteat, the owner of POTEAT LANDSCAPE, did meet the homeowner and the project was discussed - He did not have time to meet the neighbor because he had other appoinments scheduled - the neighbor was never mentioned on the phone. POTEAT LANDSCAPE emailed the homeowner a detailed estimate along with list of references and heard nothing back from the customer. We assumed they decided to use another company until we read this post. We have never done any work for this person and if you read the reviews of customers we have actually done work for - they all are very happy. I am sorry that this person did not receive their estimate.
Our entire property was landscaped and the results are good, but it was a nightmare getting there. Mark estimated the project at $13,000. We made changes along the way that doubled the estimate - most of those changes were our choice and we agreed to the overage. But, in some cases the company's design didn't take into account some work or materials that would be necessary, or underestimated quantities or actual prices. So a portion of the overage was due to original estimates being off the mark . Poteat was the low bidder but ended up costing more than our high bidder. The biggest issue, however, was performance. Rain was an issue but many sunny days, even weeks, went by with no progress. An estimated two month project took twice that long. I found myself begging him to come out to finish. Many days he just didn't show up then pleaded that he had run into problems, or traffic, or couldn't find plants. He would make another appointment, promise to come and then not show up. This was a persistent pattern. I had to turn over all dealings with him to my husband because I just could no longer talk to him without yelling. Mark is a likable guy and he relies on this. You hate to get angry with him. But, eventually, the constant excuses wear thin and the relationship dissolves. He probably hated me at the end as much as I hated working with him. It just isn't worth the hassle and the begging.
Description of Work: Landscape design, both hardscape and plantings, front and back yards. Included new patio, beautiful stone wall, new plants and trees and relocating plants provided by the home builder. The project took four months.

Please read this entire response - POTEAT LANDSCAPE provides a specific landscape design (at no cost) and exact pricing for all projects. This project was no different. Our design and estimate were approved by the homeowner. We received deposit and began work on the agreed-upon job. Almost immediately, this customer starting changing the project plan and scope of work. The changes continued until the project was complete - constant changing and adding details of all sorts to the project. POTEAT LANDSCAPE is not a large company and one of the benefits of hiring our team is the ability for the homeowner to meet directly with the owner, Mark Poteat, and make changes if they desire - in a sense custom landscaping. Mark Poteat met this homeowner over 50 times during this project and by the end the project the product was exactly what the homeowner requested - we bent over backwards to accomodate this customer. We have never worked as hard to please a customer - and, hopefully, will never again. We have not had a phone call, email, or any other contact from this customer until I read this absurb post on Angie's List posted almost 2 years later. This is a classic example of "no good deed goes unpunished". Notice work completed date 9/30/2008 (actually January 2009 due to the constant changes and additons) - On March 25, 2009 this customer sent me this evite - "We have invited our neighbors to a party on Saturday April 5, 2009. We have included you in our guest list because we'd love to show off the entire house and garden. It is also a chance for you to meet our neighbors for some low-key networking, if you like. Mostly we are just so delighted with the house and so proud of your workmanship, we want to celebrate with you". Mark Poteat and the entire team at POTEAT LANDSCAPE did everything possible to help this homeowner with their extreme changes and demands at great economic and personal time loss. We are concerned for this customer and what has happened in their personal life to go from praising our company and work to making an effort 2 years later to destroy our reputation. I wish them the best.

They were very professional on the phone. On the day of the estimate, I waited for someone to stop by at the appointed time, but no one showed up. Mark Poteat left s voice message and upon callback, he asked to re-schedule because he was stuck in traffic. We re-scheduled for the next day at the same time, however after leaving work early again, no one showed up and no phone call that time. I called his and left him a message. He called back and stated that he forgot about the appointment and he can come in 20 minutes. He did show up and looked around the yard. It took literally less than 5 minutes and basically did not need me at all, although on the phone, they wanted the owner to be present. He asked me to email him so he can get my correct email address (although they took all contact information when I set up the appt.). He said he would email the estimate that day or the day after. It has been 4 days now with no estimate. Very unprofessional and definitely not punctual or responsible.

I went and met the member to review her landscape ideas. I told her I would email her the estimate and to call or email if she had any questions. I did not tell her the estimate would be ready the next day because I needed to create a free design for her property and price the materials. I did email the member her estimate and then did not receive a call or email with any questions. The member emailed me "yelling" at me in her email that she had not received the estimate. I resent the email and her posting complaining is the only feedback I have received about the project. Poteat Landscape takes pride in its reputation and commitment to customer service. Our feedback from customers who have actually hired Poteat Landscape speak for themselves. I hope the member will find a company that will help her with her project.

I called Poteat Landscape company by reviewing the recommendations of those that reviewed the company on Angie's list. I feel that it would be in Angie's List best interest to completely remove this company from their listings. I called the company and THEY scheduled the appointment that worked best in their schedule. I then received a call approximately 3 hours prior to the appointment time (which I had taken off work) to state that they could not meet at that time. They then asked if they could come to the house to look at the work we wanted done at 7 pm. I agreed as they had received positive reviews on Angie's List. I had prior plans but changed them to ensure I was home at 7 pm. The representative NEVER showed and I did not even receive a courtesy call with an explanation. This company has proven themselves to be completely unreliable and I will be posting notes to this effect anywhere I can on the internet. Do NOT waste your valuable time on this company!!!

The member called and I set up an appointment to meet with him. I ran into some problems the day of the appointment and make sure I contacted the member at least 3 hours before the time of the appointment to let him know that I needed to reschedule. We came up with a new time later that day while I was driving. I made an honest mistake and did not write the change down in my calendar - I would have called the member like I did before if I was not going to make appointment. I take pride in being dependable but I do make mistakes. This is not how I operate - if it was, I would not be in business. The member never called or emailed me (not that I blame him) to let me know of my mistake. His negative posting was the first I heard of the problem and I promptly emailed him to see if there was any way I could help him or to compensate him for the problem. I am sorry I made a mistake - I am human. My positive postings on Angie's List for customers I have actually worked for, are a true representation of me and my company.

I've been having problems with water pooling up in a corner on my lawn as well as water getting into my crawlspace. Mark identified the problems and worked with me in finding the best solutions for the problems. It took some time to get the quotes and I occasionally had to remind him to get them to me, but once the quotes were received, the work was done quickly and professionally. I am very satisfied with the job Mark did. My drainage problem is MUCH better and my crawlspace is dry. Mark was a pleasure to work with and I would definitely recommend him to anyone who was interested.

Mark Poteat came by within a day of contacting him via email. He looked at the article that I had sent, offered what would work and what he thought may not due to the climate. Within a couple of days, he presented a landscape design similar to what we asked, and a detailed estimate of costs. The landscape crew arrived when they stated and finished in a day with the exception of a few plants that were on backorder. Within a week, the other plants were planted and the design was more than we expected. Mark came by personally several times to ensure that we were satisfied with the design and implementation. We will definitely use Poteat services again.

We leave the original statement for the initial design and construction: My experience with them was very good. They were right on time, they did everything they said they would do, they cleaned up very well, and they were easy to work with. However, we recommend that you consider also their very poor customer relations pattern after the job was installed.
Description of Work: Poteat Landscape did a lot of landscaping in our front yard and they took down a tree in our backyard. The original design was superb, and the execution of that design was generally excellent (although some workers still need to understand how to plant a potted shrub). But the follow-up was pitiful. While Poteat says he backs up his plantings with a year's warranty, it was almost impossible to get him to respond to problems. The work was completed in the late fall of 2009. At the end of summer 2010 I was concerned about the die-back of the lawn and sent him an email asking for him to come over, diagnose and prescribe a fix. He didn't respond to that message, or to 8 more messages over the next eight weeks. Then he sent a single question in October: "What plants need replacing?" I told him I was not concerned about the single shrub that had failed, but I was still concerned about the lawn. He did not replay. In fact, he didn't reply until November when I told him I was going to update my (previously excellent) Angie's List rating, and I was prepared to take him to small claims court for failure to follow through. That got a response! He blasted me for fouling his company's reputation, and he blamed me for the failure of my lawn. He was willing to do nothing for my problems. I dispute his description of the cause of the lawn failure, but I think what is worth noting is his extended refusal to respond to my inquiries and concerns over nearly ten weeks of asking for his attention. It took a threat to get his attention. I consider that unprofessional and unresponsive.

Mark was a pleasure to work with and the end result is awesome. Mark and his team delivered exactly what he said they would, and did so under budget. Mark is definitely customer service focused. Shortly after the plants were installed we received 3 inches of rain in 12 hours. The rain caused a small section of the mulch to wash and a few plants to come loose. I called Mark and he immediately sent someone out to restore the area to its original splendor. The best part was that he did all of this for no additional fees/cost.
Description of Work: Purchase and installation of plants according to a predetermined Landscape plan. The service included the purchase and planting, reconfiguration of existing irrigation and mulching.

Description of Work: Poteat & Co. mowed our lawn and blew leaves off driveway, etc. every other week during the fall 2009. We travel a lot, so were not home often when service performed, but they kept the schedule very well. When they got behind because of rain they came over immediately when I called and got everything looking good again. Plan to contact them again in the spring for some planting.

Excellent. We had several changes during the process and Mark accommodated all of them with superb professionalism and flexibility. Some of the hollies that we had planted did not survive the first year. Mark replaced all of them under warranty. Mark was always asking "Are you happy?" I've worked with several landscapers over time. The experience that we had with Poteat Landscape was the best, and by a lot.
Description of Work: Poteat Landscape did a major refresh of our landscaping: >20 trees, > 30 shrubs, a large flower garden, and they moved several trees, moved our irrigation system, and installed new drip lines and mulch. They also built and stained a screening fence. They also made on-target suggestions on plants and layout.
