I truly can't say enough great things about my experience. The job was completed in an incredible timeframe with quality craftsmanship. I was a tad concerned about the expense at first; I was planning on spending less but after seeing their work, I have absolutely no regrets. I will most certainly call them for any other job I may have.

I just moved into stated needed a place asap and the one I got need some serious work. I contacted The house surgeon and let them know my issues with my place, and the owner Jamie personally came to handle the job in a great and timely fashion. Not only was he a fast worker but finished ahead of schedule. I plan to get some other work done and they'll be the first people I call.

He came in way to high, he charged me $65 for an estimate, whereas, nobody else charged that, and that is a little high for an estimate. He quoted me little over $10000 and he knew that I was trying to sell the house and I didn't want everything perfect, I just wanted it presentable. I wasn't happy with the quote or happy to pay an estimate.

He did an excellent job from start to finish. He even came a day earlier to accomodate our schedule. He showed up right on time, got right to work, and was careful to put up barriers to reduce dust in our kitchen. He put in sheetrock, sanded over the area (as well as an adjoining area that was stained from the water leak but did not need to be replaced) and then painted over everything to match our current ceiling paint. While he was waiting for the paint to dry, he and my husband noticed that the paint around our kitchen light (that was installed by the prior owners) didn't match the rest of the kitchen ceiling and he offered to paint over that area as well. He cleaned up after himself (there was no evidence that he had been here except the ceiling hole was fixed) and was very courteous and pleasant during the entire time. When we bought the house it was clear the kitchen ceiling had been fixed and patched but the job was not done well. By the time Jamie was finished, it looked like the kitchen ceiling had never been touched--the paint blended perfectly, the patching job was seamless. We've used him before for odd jobs around the house (drywall, painting, repairing a light fixture in a bathroom), and we would not hesitate to use him again--he's who we call when we need something done around the house.
Description of Work: Jamie fixed a hole in our kitchen ceiling (we had a leak in the shower above the kitchen ceiling that the plumber had to cut a hole and fix the pipes).

They have received great reviews from other. I don't want to indicate that they did poor work- I would have used N/A if I could have because we didn't actually use them. However, N/A is not a choice for the overall grade. I will not call them again in the future for the simple reason that I don't like the business practice of having to pay for an estimate. The estimate itself cost $65 and was considerably higher than we expected. The cynic in me thinks there's a whole business in having home owners pay for estimates that end up being so high that nobody ever uses them. We ended up having the doors replaced by another contractor... who's estimate didn't cost us. To be fair, we were told that we would be charged for the estimate and that if they did the work that the cost of the estimate would be applied to the job. So, it wasn't a surprise. It's just in hind site, after seeing the quote, I regret paying for it and won't do it again.
Description of Work: We didn't have The House Surgeon perform the service. We were just looking for cost estimates on either refurbishing or replacing our front and back doors.

We have used their services in the past and expected a great job which we got, despite unexpected factors such as some of the fluorescent fixtures requiring just new bulbs instead of a new ballast (good news) and the kitchen plumbing being in not the greatest shape (bad news that will require a future fix, but of course better to know about trouble ahead of time). The work was done carefully and expeditiously, and Jamie kept us informed each step of the way. The workmanship is unparalleled; every time I look at our front door I am so happy to have it look so clean and inviting. Broad experience across many technical fields, a strong commitment to excellent service, and reasonable pricing are the best guarantees for customer satisfaction, and House Surgeon delivers brilliantly across the board. One last comment, their contract system, which identifies each step in a given task, is thorough and detailed, and gives the home owner a clear understanding of the scope of the project. This Agreement is carefully updated as needed through the life of the project, thus ensuring both parties are clear in communicating project requirements.
Description of Work: - Changed bulbs in celing fixture in master bath, flourescent fixtures in study and family room, fixture under kitchen cabinet;- Hung wire shelf in master bath; installed new kitchen faucet, Painted exterior mold trim around front door and painted security door, repaired lamp.

I think that this was a smaller job than the House Surgeon usually does, but Jamie (the owner) agreed to do it himself between some other bigger jobs. Jamie is extremely professional, reliable, and detail-oriented. He reviewed the work he was going to do with us very carefully beforehand. There were a few and quot;quick fixesand quot; we wanted him to do (e.g., in bathrooms), which he did not agree to do because he would not be able to guarantee a good outcome. The quality of his work is absolutely impeccable. It was impossible to tell, even looking really closely, where the water-damaged part of the wall that he repaired was. His solution for mounting the shelves turned out to be far better than what we had in mind. The price was a bit more than we had anticipated, but in retrospect, the professionalism and quality of the work were worth it. We will definitely use him again for similar jobs and also for bigger jobs when they come up.
Description of Work: We had the House Surgeon do several assorted repairs throughout the house. This included some touchup painting here and there, fixing a window pane, etc. The biggest two jobs were to fix and repaint a first-floor wall that had been water damaged from a water leak upstairs, and the installation of some shelves in a bedroom.

Jamie Williams, owner of The House Surgeon, arrived and took detailed measurements and pictures of all areas needing repairs. He was extremely thorough and we were so impressed w/his professionalism that we hired him immediately. Jamie spent five days meticulously prepping and repairing or creating each item on the work order. His caulking is so precise, it looks as if he applied the bead with a tiny artist's brush. He repaired a hole in the ceiling that could not now be detected w/a magnifiying glass. He spent hours carefully crafting some moulding that was extremely difficult to apply due to the existing cabinetry. Jamie's work is simply superior and he is reasonably priced as well. If you are fortunate enough to be able to fit into Jamie's demanding schedule, count yourself lucky. If you care about quality, you've found the right person. I teased him that I will be calling him Jamie HOLMES from now on, just like the great contractor on HGTV. He is a gem and we could not recommend him more highly!
Description of Work: The project consisted of caulking multiple baseboards and along the stairs, replacing a section of woodwork on the stairs, repairing a hole in the ceiling, designing and cutting moulding to fit a difficult area, replacing front entry woodwork, replacing and patching drywall and building a top and entry door for an existing, poorly designed sump pump cover.

Came to view projects to be done promptly. Gave a written estimate--very businesslike. Rearranged his schedule so the job could be done sooner. Arrived at promised time every day. Walled off the area in the living room where the ceiling was to be replaced to conform to Federal standards. Took the doors outside to plane them and repaint. He is very organized, businesslike and careful with the jobs. He explained everything he did and asked if there were any questions or concerns each day when he left. The reason I didn't indicate a price grade is that we had no other bids. We felt the price was reasonable for the work done.
Description of Work: Repaired cracks in living room ceiling. Very thorough, neat job. Caulked shower and tub. Planed and rehung two interior doors Replaced kitchen faucet All jobs completed carefully with little mess. Cleaned up thoroughly. Replaced moved objects.Showed

The project went well from start to finish. Jamie is extremely meticulous and compulsive about his work and had all so well planned out, with some of the work done in advance off-site, that the final task was completed without a hitch in record time. The rail is sturdy, attractive, matched our decor well, and turned out to fulfill its intended use exactly as planned. Kudos to Jamie!! My wife and I also found Jamie wonderful to deal with, and he explained everything he intended to do in detail in advance. We certainly would not hesitate to use his services again!
Description of Work: Jamie added a wooden railing and supporting/decorative support structures to our inside staircase from the first to second level. This was installed on the inside wall to complement the open railing on the outside wall. Due to some arthritic issues, it enables me to navigate much more easily up and down the steps. It required accurate location of the studs, installation of a wooden strip and rail with 4 heavy duty supports, and sanding, finishing, and matching the color of the outside railing. It also involved protection against damage to the inside drywall and wallpaper. The ability of the finished product to withstand considetrable stress was also necessary.

Jaime did a great job. Surely neater and with less hassle than I could have done it. Even though is was just a small job, Jaime came out to my house on a Sunday morning! Because of his full schedule, he couldn't work us in during the week in a timely fashion. I think that speaks for itself! Will definitely call him back on future, larger jobs and highly recommend him based on our experience.

Our overall experience was excellent from start to finish. Jamie returned my initial inquiry call the same day. He agreed to come out to look over the space needing repairs in a timely fashion and arrived at our home right at the scheduled time. He spent a significant amount of time surveying our basement to understand the full scope of the project, and carefully explained even minor details to me. He came back to us with an estimate again in very timely fashion. We agreed with hire The House Surgeon for the project, and again, Jamie arrived at our house nearly to the minute of our scheduled meeting time to sign the contract. He spent more than an hour just going over the contract in detail and answering all our questions. And then, for the project itself, he started exactly on the day he said he would, and then finished 12 days later, exactly when our contract stated he would finish. His time working in our home could not have been any smoother. We were extremely pleased with the finished product - in fact, we really couldn't have hoped for more. I could not recommend The House Surgeon any higher - there really wasn't a single bad aspect of the experience.

Jamie responded within 24 hours to our call for an estimate. He came out within a day or so to see the scope of the project, took detailed notes and photos, and soon he had e-mailed us a very unusual, detailed step-by-step estimate. We agreed on a price and timeframe, and the project went without a hitch. Jamie is an expert in many fields and can come up with various solutions to technical challenges, depending on the intent and budget of the homeowner. In addition to his technical excellence, spotless working habits, and his reliability and honesty, he also has an eye for aesthetics and wants each project to result in delight for the homeowner. For example, after completing a challenging renovation of our powder room, with which we were really thrilled, he made a quick trip to pick up nice new switch and outlet plates so that the bathroom would look perfect. I appreciated being able to tell him, just select something you think would look nice, as his choices worked out perfectly and saved me many trips to the hardware store. One of our family members has been suffering from a long illness, and Jamie was respectful and considerate of related constraints. Jamie is an excellent communicator and does not mind being watched while he works. In fact, his energy and can-do attitude are contagious and I believe he would be happy to know that we have continued the process of updating and repair that he started so well. His presence in our home was comforting and inspiring, but also instructive. We learned a lot from watching him at work and listeng to his explanations of how certain tasks could be addressed. We feel we now have what we have long been searching for - an ongoing relationship with a superb contractor with loyalty on both sides.
Description of Work: 1) Exterior kitchen door frame - rotted out. Removed dry rot, removed security door, replaced and painted frame, touched up paint on metal security door, rehung security door and adjusted lock. 2) Replaced light fixture on older kitchen ceiling fan. 3) Recaulked two tubs and sinks. 4) Installed dead bolt locks in two heavy-gauge steel doors and one wooden door. 5) Replaced vanity top in half-bath off master bedroom. Repaired dry wall, painted walls and ceiling. Stained vanity to update the look and replaced old hardware with a contemporary style. Updated problematic under-sink plumbing. 6) Repaired wooden garden gate.

Excellent in every respect. The House Surgeon always goes above and beyond. See earlier comments.
Description of Work: Another amazing job by the House Surgeon. We have used them before. This time we had several projects: installing new sinks in three bathrooms, repairing holes in several walls with new wall board and paint, and replacing the weather strip on a damaged door and repairing it as well as two outside doors. We also had them demolish and haul away a 10X12 shed which had become a hazard and replace it with a new one which required that they build a base. Jamie did our work and as always he was thorough from the start of the job—making sure the scope of work was defined accurately and that we understood if there were options for us to consider in how the work was done—to its completion. The projects were completed on schedule and the quality of the workmanship in every case was first rate. We decided to pick out the sinks; after returning them and getting the ones Jamie recommended, we realize that we should have let him get them in the first place. Even with that hiccup—everything stayed on schedule. The sinks are perfectly situated, the wall repairs are invisible, and all the doors are well sealed and close as they are supposed to. The area where the shed stood was completely cleared—they even cleared old wood next to the shed. They built a new base and installed a new shed (Rubbermaid 7x10). And they are always willing to go the extra mile. When Lowes delivered a shed which was slightly damaged, they notified us, waited for Lowes to pick it up, and returned the next day to receive an undamaged shed. Jaime is an old-world style craftsman in that he takes tremendous pride in doing a quality job. His company reflects his commitment to excellence. He also has a wealth of experience in home improvement work. His professionalism, knowledge and care in his work are second to none.

I have never met a workman as nice to deal with or as much of a perfectionist as Jamie. Even when things were fine with us he continued to fine tune his work until it satisfied him. He was great in every way. He was neat, considerate. completely reliable, and even though this was the first time we had used him, we would have been completely comfortable leaving him alone in our home. From the first day he started we could see what a perfectionist he was. Even before he started the job he came over twice, took pictures of all the work to be done, gave us an estimate based on the job not by the hour, and made us feel completely confident in his ability to do the job right. We were so glad we hired him and would not use anyone else again!

Jamie Williams is a true honest professional. His number one concern was to assure that my wife and I were satisfied with his work. He took the necessary time to make sure the job was done right. Jamie is a perfectionist; he will work into the evening until what he is doing is right. He takes the time to explain what was required and repeatedly asked if we had questions or concerns and was always extremely polite. Despite almost a solid week of rain, he completed the job prior to the date promised. I strongly recommend the House Surgeon.
