Overall, his idea for a permanent solution was a failure. The mulch is starting to break down already and we will need to replace it, as well as fix the steps, and add additional drainage. We now have to hire a competent landscaper to do what he failed to do. We had many issues along the way which included: 1) His lack of attention to our needs as far as aesthetics: We live in a community that has a HOA, and you can probably imagine how shocked we were when he just plunked the single pavers on top of the mulch without creating the agreed upon "steps". It looked very industrial and ugly! We had him come back to correct this issue, but even this was not properly done. When his crew dug up the area for the "steps" (2 pavers stacked on top of each other in a "U" shape), they did not add any support behind the pavers other than mulch. 2) His attitude was unprofessional - After an intense rain fell and the job was just completed, we observed that the runoff from our neighbor's yard had pushed over the mulch he swore would solve the problem. This was a total failure of our original requirements for a permanent solution to the drainage issue. When we called him to come back over and take a look. His respose was for us to go get a rake and rake it back in place. We expressed to him that it was not our intention to go outside after every rain storm and rake what should be a permanent solution, especially when alot of it washed away. We then led into conversation about how his plan for our permanent solution had failed. Aside from rolling his eyes and threatening to put a lien on our home for the remaining funds, he then admitted to us that we really needed to put more money into the project and perhaps a couple of catches would solve the issue, but it was not part of our budget anymore. For us, it was not so much the cost of the materials that was the issue, but the dishonesty and the unprofessionalism was a huge issue. Furthermore, we have never been told by a professional performing a job for us that job did not have to work, but rather, be done to the satisfaction of the person performing the work. We completely regret our decision and warn others to please make sure that your contract says EVERYTHING you want. What a waste of hard earned money!
Description of Work: We were looking for a permanent solution to the erosion and drainage issues on the side of our home. Mainly, this was caused by the steep grade of the land towards the back of our yard, and the fact that our neighbor's yard was at a higher elevation than ours, so everytime it rains, their runoff erodes our yard. When we first spoke to Mr. Renz, we expressed that we were looking for a permanent solution to the drainage and erosion problem. He assured us that he was familiar with fixing issues similar to ours, that he knew the permanent solution to our problem, and that it could be achieved within our price range. Based on his experience as a professional landscape architecht and his website reviews, we hired him to do the job. We truly regret our decision. The agreed upon plan, which was discussed over the phone and in person, was to build a series of wide "step-downs" along the side of the home with tan pavers (we never got tan, he said the store only had gray), to extend the back drainage pipe underground, to bring the soil levels up to the point where the neighbors runoff no longer eroded our property, and to plant a mid size plant to block the view from the street of the downspout at the front of our home (we got a small plant instead). He assured us that the materials he wrote down in his "contract" would be sufficient for our permanent solution to the issue, and so we signed it. Yes, he did give us all those materials, but his overall solution failed miserably, and we now have to make additional expenditures to correct what should have been corrected in the first place.
