We received estimates from four handymen and contractors. His price was similar to three of them (a lot cheaper than the fourth) but that was not the only reason we went with Norm. It was the little things. He not only gave us a price but told us the problem: water was getting into the siding which attracted ants and then the woodpeckers pecked the wood. He was correct as one day I had to chase a woodpecker from the house. Unlike several others, he returned phone calls promptly and was good at customer service in general. The final product looks good. It took three days--two days to replace the siding and one day to paint. It took about three weeks to get an appointment as he is very busy. But it was worth it. As only some of the siding was replaced, we were a little worried that the paint would not match exactly but you can't tell what part is old and what part is new. We were very happy with the results and happily recommend him.
Description of Work: Replace rotted siding with hardiplank. Painted the new siding to match the old one.

Norm showed up to perform an estimate to install french doors to close our office from the living room. He seemed knowledgeable about what needed to be done, and what our wishes were. His estimate was on the high side, but we chose him because he seemed like he would provide a high level of service. The doors took approximately 8 weeks to be delivered. The shipment was delayed from the supplier twice per Norm. I did not have a problem with this. On a Wednesday afternoon I received a text from Norm that the doors would be delivered the next day. The next day I waited at the house for delivery. Around lunch time I called Norm to try and get an ETA on delivery, he said he would call the supplier and let me know. I did not hear back from Norm on an ETA. Finally, at 4pm the doors arrived. Norm informed me that the next morning they would come an install the doors. Maybe I misunderstood, but Norm did not show up for the installation. Instead, he sent two guys that I had never met before. They seemed to do a decent job, but ended up damaging the paint on the wall around the frame of the french doors. This may have been unavoidable, so not a big deal. I just wish that Norm would have let me know this would happen ahead of time so I could make sure I had the correct paint for the office wall. This did not come up in our conversations ahead of time, I only had the paint for the door and the frame ahead of time. After the installation was complete, Norm informed me that the painters would be coming in about an hour or two, but did not commit to an exact ETA. Like the delivery of the doors, this required me to stay at the house and wait without knowing when they would should up. 4 hours later, 3 individuals showed up who did not speak English very well. I had not met them before, so I assumed that were sent by Norm to paint the doors. As the painters began to sand the doors, I asked them to put down a drop cloth, as the wood shavings were going all over the floor. They put down a small drop cloth that did not adequately cover the area, and asked to use my vacuum to clean up the mess. When they were done they left the vacuum attachment laying around and the vacuum had to be put away. During the sanding/priming/painting process, the painters took many cell phone calls which stopped them from working. They were laughing, joking, and talking with each other and on the phone the entire 2 hours they were working on the doors. Many times they would get a phone call and walk outside to talk. When they told me they were finished, I found 3-4 areas that they had completely missed paining around the frame. In addition, they did not clean the glass panels in the doors. At that point I wanted them gone. After letting the paint dry over night, my wife and I have spent the morning scraping paint off the glass and cleaning. We have probably spent about 1-2 hours cleaning behind these folks so far. The painters got paint and other debris all over the surrounding areas on our office. Everything is filthy, which is no surprise, they barely used any drop cloth at all. The main point I would like to make is that Norm did not show up at all after the initial estimate. This would have been ok if his crew had proper direction and instruction, mainly the paint crew. I really think they needed a supervisor with them to avoid all of the mess they left behind, and to inspect the final job. I am just glad that I caught the places they missed painting before they left. The price was probably about $300-$500 too high, so with that premium I expected a much better experience. At the end of the day I felt like I had to manage this project myself. The doors are what we asked for and we like the way they look, so the overall grade is not an F.
Description of Work: Installed interior french doors and painted to match existing paint scheme.

Response from Reilly's Handyman Services
The home owner wanted doors milled to match existing doors that are no longer available. I informed him of the lead time from the manufacture. I have no control over the manufacture or delivery delays. Also, I told him that we need to cut the walls between the two rooms and that we will need to touch up the paint. I believe with the long lead time he may have forgotten. I phoned and texted at least 8 or 10 times to keep him informed of who and what to expect. He said he was very happy with the doors and the installation, but not the painters. He suggested deducting $100 for the paint job. I told him to deduct $300 for the painting because if he was not happy, I was not going to charge for the painting. My main painter that was scheduled to paint had a gallstone operation 2 days before. To stay on schedule, I sent his helper. This was a mistake I will not make again, but I did not charge for the painting. The homeowner told me “this more than makes up for it”!

Norm has always been super to work with- fair price, good workers, excellent work. The siding job was fantastic- very solid, house looks brand new. I am working with him now for a kitchen remodel (he is removing my old cabinets and painting before the cabinet maker installs), and he is putting on a new roof, and doing a 2nd bathroom remodel. Will update this review after a couple years (to ensure no leaks) but have good confidence that the roof will be great. New work starting May 2012.
Description of Work: I hired Norm's team several times, the first in 2005 (siding/bathroom remodel: plumbing-tiling-smoothed ceiling / kitchen lighting /install stove vent /interior paint) and a couple jobs after that in 2005- he came out to fix a roof leak I had in 2009 while it was pouring- the original roofer I used refused to come out "because it was raining". Norm's guys saved me from a lot of trouble that day.

I'm sorry I was too busy to take on additional work that needed to be completed totoday or tomorrow. I usually stay booked for about 2-4 weeks in the summer time. Most of the jobs I do, takes me several days or if we are building a screen porches it may be weeks. People need to understand if you are working for someone, you can't tell them I have another job to do -- I'll be back later!

Norm Reilly came recommended by a co-worker and overall we had a great experience. We just bought an older house and Norm and his crew did an extensive renovation job. The work was done in high quality and in the time frame / budget we agreed with Norm. Norm was overall very responsive and gave frequent updates on the progress. We will use Norm Reilly again for future projects.

Norm showed up and went through my list while we inspected the house. He made useful recommendations and put together a thorough estimate on the spot. He walked me through the schedule for getting the work done and then lived up to the timelines, even though we had several days of rain. All the work done was of high quality and everyone that worked on the house was very friendly and professional. There was no pressure or sales pitch, just a friendly and competent review of the work to be done. I am extremely pleased with the job and will definitely use Reilly's Handyman Services the next time I need something done around the house.

We met with Mr Reilly and told him what we wanted. He gave us a price which was lower then two other estimates we received. We went and looked at a deck that was done by the same company. The quality looked great. So we went with Reilly's handyman to replace the deck. The old deck was removed in one day and the new one started. It took more then a month to complete but that was because of the holidays and the workers having time off. We also had to wait for Wake County to come and do inspections. They did the complete job including getting the Wake County permit, installing two electrical outlets, Installing the ceiling fan and painting. The deck is supported by thirteen, 6 by 6 wooden supports. There are many bolts holding the deck to the house. It is quite solid. We had premium deck boards used. The price also includes replacing wooden hand railing for two entryways on the front of our house.
Description of Work: We had our old deck removed and replaced. It was enlarged a bit and we also had part of it made into a screen room. The screen room is close to 16 by 15 feet with a new shed roof. We also had the wooden hand railing for two entryways on the front of our house replaced.

The work went fine. The carpenters did all the work as expected. The painters painted every thing the way we wanted. They had to match the color of the house in two areas. On the new front roof we had them use a lighter color on the trim. We will use that color some time in the future on all of our trim.
Description of Work: We had a front porch roof added to the main entry way of our house. We also had rotted wood replaced on our garage, this included some pieces of siding. We also had them replace 18 rows of smooth beaded siding on the north side of our house.

They came here to do the work and then realized that they couldn't put in the stairs. It was kind of disappointing. They first went up in the attic and measured and gave me an estimate, but when the workers came, they realized that there were too many air conditioning vents and things in the way and couldn't put the stairs in. I was disappointed that they didn't notice when they did the estimate that they couldn't do the job. They were all very nice and pleasant and I didn't have any complaints there but I was just disappointed that I couldn't get the job done when I thought I could. I had done a lot of work in preparation for them to come. I had done a lot of work cleaning up the attic and moved things out of the way so that they could get their work done, and then they couldn't get the work done. The flooring job went very well and they did an excellent job on that. The work was good and the price was fine. I may possible use them in the future.

The party was courteous on the phone and in person. They arrived on time as we had arranged. The inspected the work to be done and advised what tasks could possibly be performed by a "subcontractor". In this case it was the plumbing. He explained that the handle of the faucet broke the way it did because the builder used a sub standard product. Additionally since we could not identify the manufacturer if the part, that would make it infinitely more difficult to find a replacement part and we may end up having to replace the entire unit. If the entire unit is replaced it would also mean more drywall work. I had him give me the estimate for repainting the common areas of my home both the mainfloor and the hallway leading to both the basement and the upper floor.

We scheduled an hour block of time for his arrival. He arrived when I was on the phone with a client (I work from home). It took me about 5 minutes to get off the phone so I could answer the door. He was gone but did leave his business card. I called him immediately but he never answered nor has he returned my call. I apologized and realized I should have told him I work from home and on the phone so he could have gotten started looking at the siding job. If anyone goes with this guy, make sure you get an exact time of arrival. Obviously he could not be bothered which did not leave me with a good impression. If he is that busy then I don't need him rushing through my work to his next job. That is the impression he left me with anyway.
Description of Work: None as he did not stay to complete his estimate.

Response from Reilly's Handyman Services
I arrived at this house when I said I would. I rang the bell, then knocked on the door, phoned the owners cell phone and left a voice mail that I was at the house, waited a few minutes and assumed the person was not at home! I did not receive a return call or voice mail or I would have turned around. I spent 30 minutes driving to the house, then 30 minutes returning home and 2 gallons of gas. I think this missed estimate was not my fault and is unfair of the owner to list it as he did. I am sorry this person didn't understand when we agreed I would arrive at his house. I always tell people "I will arrive between X and Y (i.e. I will ARRIVE at your house between 9:00 and 10:00.), this window allows me time to start or finish my jobs." I understand some people write on their calendar 9:00 - 10:00 and forget that is the arrival time.

The owner, Norm, provided a reasonable quote (actually better than what neighbors had received for similar work) and stated he could manage all the different types of work I needed done. His team is very professional, experienced and were very helpful in making decisions on each phase of the work. Overall, I would say the quality of work was very good. My only disappointment was with a swinging door they'd installed. They placed the 4x4's too close and not at an angle that made it necessary to install the door off true. The result is that the doors slightly hit and they are obviously not straight across from each other when you look at it. Still, given all the work I had done that was completed perfectly, I didn't see having them redo the door. The projects were to take three (3) weeks, but, due to some delays on my side waiting for doors to come in, we had to delay some work. Norm was gracious and was able to manage the team's work schedule to complete what they could and return when the doors came in. I really appreciated his flexibility and willingness to help me work through these scheduling challenges. I would advise that home owners make sure to participate on their projects. I didn't give a final approval on the setup of the concrete forms so I have to deal with a steeper curve on the corner than I'd wanted. It wasn't necessarily their fault as I'd told them what I had wanted but didn't come out to confirm they'd built what I wanted before they went ahead with the concrete so I share that responsibility. They offered to add the extra length for a reasonable cost but, it would have made another line between the old pour and the new so I opted to live with it....it isn't that bad, but, it does make me wish I had gone out before they'd done the pour. Bottom Line: I would hire Reilly's Handymen service for any home repair. I would make sure that I am clear on what I want and ask to approve any major steps before they proceed. Even so, Norm Reilly has a lot of integrity and will do his best to make any defects right by the customer. His team did a lot of extras that he never quoted and they were a pleasure to work with. From my perspective, it is good to have a contractor who can 1) do almost any job, 2) do it at a fair price, 3) do the work in a timely manner and 4) do it with a high level of quality (or be willing to rework if not totally satisfied).
Description of Work: I had Reilly's Handymen do a lot of work around my house. The list includes siding (whole house), painting house, reconstructed entire porch railing (after he'd only quoted a few rails), fixed roofing/gutters where needed, repaired water damage with new drywall and paint, installed drain to improve H20 runoff, poured @45x6 feet of concrete (though he'd only quoted for 38 feet), build lattice work walls to hide pool equipment, straightened a section of fence and installed 4 new doors.

.In April we started working with Norm to put together some ideas for a much needed update for our 25 year old house. The counter space in the kitchen was very limited, all of the trim was stained wood and the main rooms were looking their age. We were planning to be on vacation for two weeks in September and it was agreed that most of the work would be done while we were gone. He worked with us to select cabinets, granite counter tops , fireplace stone and lighting. As we got closer to the date, we agreed to start some of the popcorn and cabinet removal early so the renovations would be finished when we got back. When we left for vacation on September 10, the ceilings had been finished (and looked great!), and the kitchen was torn down to the studs and some of the drywall had been replaced. We had worked with Norm before so we truly enjoyed our vacation. The trip was terrific but it was exciting to get home. When we walked in the house we were stunned. The kitchen is not only beautiful but so much more useful. I love the pull out cabinet shelves and the long stretches of granting counters. The new stone on the fireplace wall is a real eye catcher as opposed to the wood that was there which was an eye sore. The fresh paint and white trim look smart. The new polished nickel lighting and door handles were terrific finishing touches. This was a job well done. Ryan was the person who directed and did much of the work on the house. He handled everything so well. He even made sure the appliances were in before we got back. We're so glad we made the right choice to remodel.
Description of Work: They did a complete kitchen remodel including cabinets, counter top and new lights. In the living room, they replaced the front of the wood fireplace wall with stone and a mantle. They removed popcorn ceilings in the halls, kitchen, living and dining rooms and repainted the ceilings, walls and trim. In the powder room, they removed the old vanity and replaced the cabinet and sink as well as the painting. They replaced some high ceiling lights in the living room and front hall. They also replaced all the hardware on the doors.

We called Norm with two issues: a rotten window sash and a door which would not close properly. Norm was very helpful and honest regarding the window. He explained what he would do to fix it ? pop the window out, take it to Stock Building Supply on Yonkers, order a replacement, and pop that one in. He explained that we could do the same thing ourselves with minimal effort and half the price. We are very grateful for that. The door required more skill than we possess. We recently had a contractor do a number of things to our house, including replacing a door to one bathroom. It was only after we had paid the contractor in full and he was gone (and unresponsive to calls) that we realized that the door did not close properly. In fact, it was so tight, that it sprung open when released and pulled a great deal on the hinges when closed. My husband tried a number of things to fix it, but we never got it quite right. Ryan Reilly came to our house the day after we called and fixed the door by doing a number of things, which we would never have been able to figure out. The door works just fine now. Ryan was professional and helpful. He made almost no mess and offered to sweep what little dust he had created. It was a pleasure and I am very happy to have a bathroom door that works!

Norm Reilly from Reilly's Handyman Services was very easy to work with during this project. His quote was within the price range of other handymen. However, the other handymen I quoted were not nearly as detailed as Norm in terms of finding problems initially. Also, I had several people come out to look at a window that was leaking, and the solutions to that carpentry problem ranged from providing a temporary fix of replacing parts of the trim to replacing the entire window. Norm?s solutions fixed the immediate problems of wood rot and he saved me a lot of money by realizing that the entire window did not have to be replaced. He suggested a change to the flashing to prevent further leaks. It was a smart solution, and I appreciated his honesty. I chose Reilly for a few reasons: his quote was reasonable; his company was referred to me by a friend who?s mechanically-inclined and nit-picky about good quality work; and Reilly is ranked well on Angie's List. The total work took 6 days, and the teams of carpenters, painters, and roofers were well organized. Everyone on his team was professional and conscientious. His carpenters have been working with Norm for years, and their work is high quality. As the teams worked, they found some other small areas that needed repair and they brought that to my attention. The painters and roofers were also good, and my house looks fresh and is completely sealed. I would recommend Reilly?s Handyman Services because of their quality of work is very good. During my final walk-through with Norm, I had my checklist of small things that I needed to touch-up. I realized his guys had fixed nearly all the things on my list. That was very good. He told me I had been one of his tougher customers, but he has two thumbs up from me.

I contacted Norm via email and got a quick response. He agreed to meet immediately and do the entire job. He expedited the work I needed done as I had to get the repairs done quickly in order to get my rental home listed again for new tenants. Norm's team worked quickly and professionally and commmunicated well if there are any questions or concerns. Norm himself responded to several questions immediately. His team finished a big job within a week and I thought the quality was very good and the price was fair. I would definitely use Norm and his team again and would recommend them. I have to admit I use Angie's list quite a bit but do not submit reports very often but in this case I make an exception because I think highly of Norm and his team.
Description of Work: Norm and his team were able to address 80% of the items on an extensive home inspection report. This included, but was not limited to, siding replacment, exterior washing and painting, porch and deck repair/replacement, exterior wall replacement/repair, gutter repair and cleaning, chimney repair, and numerous other items, outside and inside the home.
