Description of Work: I've used Matson for a dozen years now. They have provided routine maintenance on my HVAC units for winter and summer. The technicians are always professional, on time and have never recommended unneeded work. Scheduling is always easy and the office staff is friendly. | |Matson, also successfully bid on replacing and aging HVAC in our home. Their price was competitive. The new unit has functioned beautifully in our home. Providing excellent cooling comfort at hater efficiency than our old unit. | |I've already recommended Matson to friends and neighbors and nobody has had any complaints.

We had to call several times to get a call back to schedule an A/C tune-up that we had already paid for. While the technician performed our A/C tune-up just fine, he also found what he suspected was a leak in our unit. He told us that he would have the office schedule a follow-up appointment where a technician would come out and try to find the leak. We never heard from them. We tried to call them several times, but absolutely can not get a return call. Too bad.
Description of Work: Technician was out to perform an A/C tune-up. He seemed knowledgable and we had no problem with the tune-up. It was the leak he suspected he had found, and absolutely no follow-up that was the problem.

The sales, original install and subsequent service calls went very well. The sales and the technicians were on time, prompt, thorough and professional. Response to calls was rapid and always handled professionally. The quick response on the final call was suggested by Maximum Mechanical and was important to resolution. Would I change some things? Yes. The Carrier thermostat supplied is difficult to program but it is easy to use once programmed. The sheet metal protecting duct work into the house is sloped towards the gas pack. It is also heavily sealed with silicone caulk on the house side. It should slope away from the gas pack for at least a few inches and the connection to the house should be cleaner requiring less caulk. The sheet metal is adequate and was never mentioned to Maximum Mechanical. This was intended to be a report on the final service call, but it required history for completeness.
Description of Work: Diagnosed and corrected a problem with heating temperature control caused by occasional temporary burner over temperature shutdowns only in unusually cold weather. In 2011 Maximum Mechanical replaced the gas pack HVAC unit on our home with a Train 2.5 ton,14 SEER unit. The replacement also split our forced air system into 2 zones adding a control board, ductwork and remote controlled dampers. This is a report on their most recent service correcting an occasional problem. When the first winter came we noticed occasional long delay of heat to turn on with thermostats calling for heat. The temperature control was poor. Maximum Mechanical fixed that at no charge but the problem happened again next winter. When they arrived the system was working normally. The system was cleaned and checked but they found nothing wrong. They increased zone control board over temperature setting, but the problem could not be reproduced and there was no way to check if the setting change would fix it. The problem happened again a few weeks later. This time they had a technician on site less than an hour after the call. The gas pack had an error code reporting an over temperature burner shutdown. The over temperature was caused by a combination of load (outside temperature), our duct work sizing, and the heating capacity of the gas pack. The correction was to increase fan speed (slightly more noisy) and to lock out the high heat (not needed) burner mode in the gas pack. The system now controls temperature properly in cold weather.

We set-up an appointment for an estimate, they came out exactly when they said they would, and went through the house with us to talk about our needs. They were extremely thorough in taking measurements and talking about issues we needed to solve. They wound up redesigning most of our ductwork to improve airflow to a number of rooms upstairs. Also, they installed large air filters that only need to be replaced once/year, and they installed a whole house humidifier. We had also asked them to move the unit and ductwork in the attic to free up space so that we can eventually finish it, and they had no problem doing that. They completed the entire job in about 3 days. Then they scheduled a follow-up visit to go through everything and show us how it all worked. We did experience a problem a few weeks after they finished. One of the units was not cooling like it was supposed to. But they were extremely responsive. They came out once, checked everything, and indicated everything was fine. The problem continued though, and we called them back out. Again, they came out very quickly, identified and fixed the problem, and everything has been fine ever since. The only issue we have is that the airflow inside the house is stronger than it used to be, and the air going through the main return ducts is causing a lot more noise than before. We called them out to take a listen, and they indicated we needed new grilles for the ducts because the old ones had louvres that were too restrictive. Sure enough, if we open the grille, it becomes whisper quiet. They did offer to order some new grilles for us for cost, but it would have been good if they had recognized this during the design and addressed it during installation. This really isn't a big issue for us ... they were so professional and the overall job was so good, that we were willing to live with the noise. We just need to replace the grilles ourselves. Overall, we have been very pleased with the result. Our house is extremely comfortable now!
Description of Work: We had Maximum/Matson Mechanical come out and completely replace our upstairs and downstairs heating units with Carrier equipment, additional ductwork, programmable thermostats, large Trion Airbear filters, and a whole house humidifier.

Engagement was very professional. They provided necessary engineering data to satisfy inspectors that 2nd floor system could handle capacity. While other outfits seemed a little hesitant, they had good suggestions about how to proceed and confidence to get the job done. At first the installation of the duct work did not pass inspection, but this was corrected almost immediately and it easily passed the re-inspection. Town of Cary inspectors are picky (which is actually a good thing). This was the only part of the job that caused me to to downgrade to a 'B' rating. The finished result would get an 'A'. This room in my house has the best heat and a/c. This resulted from the outstanding insulation job (pat on my own back) and the work that Maximum Mechanical did. Well done.
Description of Work: I finished off my walkup attic into another room. They added ductwork, thermostats and equipment to create zones for 2nd and 3rd floor a/c and heat off the 2nd floor system which had spare capacity for this purpose.

They did a great job. The serviceman arrived on time and was very thorough. He had to work around our shrubs that are all around our AC unit which I really need to cut back. But, he did it all and had a great attitude about it and a sense of humor as well. Our hose also posed a challenge, spraying him since it doesn't connect all that well to the tap. I had to give him credit for working in somewhat adverse conditions! :-) It turned out it didn't need repair, things were just fine. He cleaned the coils and verified that the pressures were good and checked the indoor readings as well. I've been using Matson for years now and have never been disappointed. They were by far the least expensive alternative when I had the unit replaced three years ago. ARS, which I have also used, were considerably more expensive. I recommend Matson to anyone that needs HVAC service.
Description of Work: They performed routine maintenance on our HVAC system and checked things out since I was not sure it was all working properly.

Lost cooling for AC. Technican checked pressures in system, refrigerant low. He did a complete check of condenser coil, connecting tubing, and evaporator coil, using sniffer. Leak found in evaporator coil. He advised the evaporator coil could be replaced, and discussed the phaseout of R22; no scare talk about unavailability of R22 next year. He advised not to run AC, to prevent damage to compressor. Supervisor called next day with estimate for evaporator replacement and estimate for system replacement. Chose evaporator replacement, which was completed three days later.

I had a neighbor that used Matson Mechanical and was pleased with them. I picked Matson Mechanical over another bid at about the same quote because I could get the next model up in Carrier's lineup w/ a better warranty. Kit spent quite a bit of time inspecting the existing installation then more time making measurements. He took the data back to his office and did the load calculations. This is how I found out 2 tons was borderline for my situation. Other companies either used a rule-of-thumb or insisted what I already had was sufficient cooling capacity. He also said we should replace the horizontal sections of the line set since even flushing them would not get rid of the oil residue left by the R22 refrigerant. We were switching from R22 to R410 and the oil in the two refrigerants are not compatible. He also explained that the furnace was fine and even looked up the manufacturer and model to see that it had a 20 year heat exchanger warranty. He explained they would install the evaporator coil unit lower than the furnace and plenum. This prevents any accidental overflow of condensate from going back into the furnace or forward into the plenum and leaking out in the attic (and onto the second floor ceiling). Three guys showed up around noon on Tuesday and worked until 4pm or so. Returned the next day around 8:30am and were done by noon. They cleaned up everything as they worked. They seemed to work well and efficiently together as a team. When they were done and had tested everything they gave me a guided tour of all the work they had done. I noticed that they had also bumped the blower speed in the furnace to match the calculations made (the blower motors have multiple taps that let the installer tweak the blower speed to the application). All in all I thought this company was very thorough and puts a lot of thinking in what they do.
Description of Work: Replaced my 13 year old split AC system on 4/9/08. The builder's system was borderline from a load calculation perspective; therefore, increased capacity from 2 to 2.5 tons. Switched to R410 from R22. Increased size of original return duct from 12" to 14" (builder had undersized it) and added a second 10" return due to capacity increase. Recovered refrigerant from old system, removed and disposed of old eqpt, installed new unit bases, fabricated and installed sheetmetal transitions, installed secondary drain pan w/ float switch, sealed the new ductwork, replaced horizontal sections of line set (because R410 oil is incompatible with the previous R22 refrigerant oil), completed start-up and tested the unit.

I would rate this company very low. They actually came from Angie's list, but they were horrible. For one, they came out for a routine visit. Two weeks later I had a frozen pipe and I was wondering what they had done. They came out and said that they could not fix what was wrong. He ended up leaving and I was expecting company that day. They came back again and said it was leaking. Of course, it was leaking. He filled it with Freon. They charged me $160 for that. I told them this was their problem. Clearly they had done something wrong. I live by myself so I paid them and I am very glad to tell members of Angie's List about them. I was not happy.

The outside furnace was making strange noises and smells. Called on a Monday before Thanksgiving. They came out that afternoon; but, could not do anything since it was raining and it seemed to be producing heat. I turned the system off. They came back the next Tuesday after Thanksgiving and diagnosed it correctly and called back on Thursday with an estimate for the part. Part came in on the next Tuesday and was installed immediately and the system works well. Overall, it took too much time (fortunately, it was warm for a good part of the time) and I don't have a good feel on the cost.
