Description of Work: Like some others on this list, I found Janar difficult to communicate with. It was my first experience with having hardwood flooring installed, and he did not do a very good job of explaining the process and explaining all my options. The first problem arose when he sent me a contract to sign, which included wording to the effect that I agreed not to hold the company responsible if my home was damaged in any way during the installation. This seemed unreasonable to me, and I asked that the provision be removed. Janar's response was that if I didn't like anything about the contract I should find someone else to do the work, but he wasn't going to make any changes to the contract. I decided reluctantly to just trust that if damage did occur, he would be reasonable, and I signed the contract. The next problem arose when the wood was delivered to my home 3 days before installation was to begin. The wood arrived much later than I had been led to expect. And the wood was coated with a sticky substance. (Unbeknownst to me, wood that had already been sealed on all six sides was being used; I hadn't been informed that this was what had been ordered-I had just specified red oak-or what the advantages and disadvantages of using presealed wood might be.) So I called Janar to inquire what the sticky substance was, saying that I wondered whether the wood that had been delivered was the correct wood. His wife Helen called me back and told me that because I was being "difficult" (I had also called a couple of times preceding day to try to get an update on what time to expect the wood delivery), they were not going to do the job, that someone would come and pick up the wood the next day, and my down payment would be refunded. I tried to explain that I didn't mean to be difficult, that I was just asking for information, that I couldn't possibly get the job rescheduled in time for the place to be ready for me to move in on my moving date, but she wouldn't listen. The next morning Janar called me to tell me what time they would pick up the wood and I was more successful in communicating with him than I had been with Helen. He explained why he wanted to use the sealed wood and eventually he somewhat reluctantly agreed to send a crew to do the installation after all. Unfortunately, I think he sent his least experienced work crew to do the job (the crew leader said that he was new to being the leader). They banged their equipment into walls leaving numerous black marks and dings in the dry wall, and I think they cracked the fiberglass in the shower when they stored their equipment in the bathroom overnight. After they sanded off the pre-sealed layer of the installed floor, they sealed and stained it without first filling in the nail holes as they should have done. In a number of places the ends of boards are closer than they should be to the end of a board on either side. Also, they failed to warn me that the sealant would darken the wood (I had chosen a "natural" stain hoping not to change the color of the wood.) They left some substance (dried sealant, I'm guessing) on the tile of the laundry closet. But on the plus side, the workers were pleasant people, and except for the things I've noted, they did a good job; the floors look nice. And at my request Janar sent someone to fill the nail holes with putty and fix a few other minor problems. In the end they delivered a satisfactory product, but the whole experience was much more stressful than it needed to be. |

They only wanted to do the work if the project was big enough and were kind of pricey. Seemed very professional though (much more so than some other companies that gave estimates). In the end, the logistics of making the project big enough were too complex so we went another way.

Janar, the owner, came to the house and did the estimate on-the-spot. He was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He had several options for us to choose from and really helped guide us to the right product for us. I thought his prices were good and he certainly seemed to take a personal interest in getting the work and doing it right. Installers (Brian and Chris) were excellent and hard-working. They worked well as a team and certainly knew exactly how to handle the challenges presented to them. How they had the energy to work at such a pace all day was impressive. And, they completed the work in a timely manner. They showed up on-time and finished on-time. Overall, I would highly recommend Green Step Flooring...

We moved into our present house the floor was as old as the house, which is 13ish years old. The floor was in OK shape but was in need of refinishing. There was some yellowing and scratches and just miss use. Well we where planing on waiting sometime to refinish them but thanks to Lowe's that plan was moved up. We purchased a new washer and dryer and had them delivered, not once but twice! Just the washer had to be switched out because of a dent. When the delivery guys where moving the old new washer out they put a of scratch/gouge in the floor in the front hall. Because of this Lowe's sent out some people and took a few pictures to turn in. Lowe's insurance company called and said that if I got a quote to fix the floor they would send me a check. I had a couple of companies come out and look at the damage. All said the same thing, "that it would be impossible to just repair the area that was damaged. So I had them quote me to refinishes the whole floor. Janar at Green Step was by far the most responsive to my phone call and came right out and gave me the quote. I forwarded the quote to Lowe's who talked to Janar and came to an agreement on price. Lowe's sent the check fast, which was a surprise (Nothing wrong with Lowe's, stuff happens). Do to my schedule it took a couple of months for me to schedule Green Step to do the floors. We had a Thursday as the start date. Joe and Josh showed up right on time and got started right away. They really know what they are doing. Apparently Joe has won a couple of awards for his floors in "The Parade of Homes" in Johnston County (Not sure of location). The first day they where there until about 4pm(ish). The second day stated early and where done by 2pm. We had planed on being out of the house for two nights because of could not get up stairs because the hardwood is all downstairs. But also the stories of the overpowering smell. Well we wound up staying at a nearby hotel, but only for one night. The smell was nothing! We had to keep the Cats off the floors for a few days and walk around in socks. All no big deal. You can't put down trow rugs for a week or move any furniture back for a few days. The floor look fantastic, I did have Janar come out and take a look at it yesterday, he was not happy with one of the boards and some of the areas could use another coat. Well the board has nothing to do with Green Step, just a bad board from the initial instillation. All and All just Fantastic!!!!
Description of Work: Refinished 700sq/ft of hardwood floors in our house. The floor was 13ish years old. It was yellowed from the sun and a natural finish. Green Step Sanded down the old finish, sealed and then coated the floors. Removed and replaced the shoe/quarter round molding and thresholds. Took 2 days to get them done. Just fantastic.!!!!!!

Overall the product and service was satisfactory. The communication was a little tough sometimes as the owner is less than patient when I can not understand what he means by certain jargon in this industry. Green Step Flooring performed at an "A" level across all the ratings categories. While they were one day behind on getting started they called us well ahead of time to explain the situation. Here are some other observations: Janar (Owner) was informed, approachable and helpful. He returned phone calls promptly and was excellent to deal with Excellent communication - the Project Manager kept us fully informed of schedule and a few repairs that were made The low VOC products used are not only good for the indoor air environment but have a great track record for wear The quote process is highly automated and within minutes of measuring the rooms electronically, I had a quote on site and by email While not the cheapest estimate, the entire experience from beginning to end was as professional as anyone could expect or want
Description of Work: We purchased a 16-year old home in Southern Village in Chapel Hill. All the hardwood floors needed to be refinished (~1200 sq. ft.) All the floors were refinished and a cheap white quarter-round was replaced with oak shoe mold.

Green Step Flooring was the first company we received a quote from. Janar was on time for the estimate and was able to produce a quote right away. We met with several other companies but kept coming back to Janar. He helped a lot when we were unsure what to put into our house but never pushed me into a particular product. My husband and I finally agreed on a product and Janar once again produced a quote within the hour. Janar and his crew were always on time, communicated everything and was very respectful. When we had to push back finishing our floors due to other work not finished in our house, Janar was very understanding and was able to schedule us when we needed. The floors look great and we are so glad we chose Green Step Flooring. We would recommend them to anyone we know and would have them back if we ever need anything done again.

The initial visit with Janar went fine. He was in and out very quickly and provided the estimate on the spot. I'd forgotten to ask him about fixing the creaky boards with the install. He actually brought that up to me and said they would fix that as they go. The other estimates charged extra for fixing the creaks. I was impressed that Janar gave me the lowest quote ($500 less than 2 others) and did not try to pad the estimate for extras like driving a couple of screws into the subfloor to fix the creak. One other estimate was $175, just for that. I was also impressed that Janar exhibited knowledge about my existing floor. It is not the typical floor you find in most homes, it's very rustic. My husband and I both work and Janar and his crew bent over backwards to accommodate our schedules. The floor and the finish match the rest of the house perfectly, so close that they look as if they were installed at the same time. I am a very picky consumer with attention to detail. I am extremely pleased the the quality of the job. The guys cleaned up. They were all super cool and nice.

Once I made a decision on GreenStep- Janar had to schedule the material, crews and equipment; he keeps the crews busy and the truck that has all the sanding equipment is always busy (he was in the process of outfitting a second truck when he did our job) Solid hardwood flooring needs to acclimate- so it was delivered on a Friday and installation began Tuesday. Progress was steady but slow the first 2 days with only 1 installer- which really didn?t matter because the critical path was the sanding machine: it was booked into the next week. On the third day a crew of 4 arrived and knocked out the remainder of the installation in no time. Although we had to several days for the finishing- we were still able to walk on the floor and move back in some temporary chairs and table in the kitchen. The sanding process took 1 day ? and is mostly dustless. The stairs had the old finish sanded off- and that produced some dust (in hind sight we could have taped up a drop cloth at the top of the steps to shield the upstairs from the dust) Overall- it wasn?t that bad- in fact- we produced more dust getting the old ceramic tile out of the kitchen in preparation for the installation. The staining and finishing was completed the next day. They laid out several different samples of stain onto the floor. Once the choice was made- they just sanded over all the samples for a fresh surface. During the quote process a contractor had recommended the Bona water based finish ? at first I wasn't convinced- but I read up on it and discussed with Janar. It is without a doubt the best way to go ? it?s very durable, is dry enough to walk on in socks within a few hours and has a very low odor. We chose top of the line commercial grade Traffic Control since we have pets (it?s super hard surface resists paw scratches and pet accidents)- so far the only accident has been from latex paint while I was painting the trim- it cleaned easily with no impact to the finish. We are pleased with the workmanship of the installation and finishing of the flooring. Since the steps were red oak- the new floor matches and looks original. It has certainly brought new life to our 20 year old home. In fact - the floors look so nice we are repainting all the walls and installing plantation shutters in the living room and dining room for a whole new look! Janar was easy to work with and kept us informed throughout the process, his crew was efficient, courteous and did outstanding workmanship. I highly recommend Green Step Flooring for any flooring installation or refinishing needs.
Description of Work: Install, sand, stain and finish 850 square feet of select red oak tongue and groove hardwood flooring. Janar was the first contractor to quote on the job. I had several others to quote- but none matched the price and equipment ("dustless") This was a site ready job for Green Step. My son had removed old carpet, tile, particleboard and plywood down to the subfloor in preparation.

The overall product was really great, and we would most assuredly use them again. JT's staff is hardworking and punctual. We had urine stain issues with the floor which they corrected to make the floor look new and they did it within the "original" time frame after the issues were discovered. The only thing I would like to see improved is the stain choice selection process. We received information about stain colors and options in a piecemeal fashion. For example, we didn't learn about the option to "pop" the grain until later in the process of selecting the stain. If options like those were explained from the beginning perhaps it would have been less stressful to pick the stain. Still, we would use them again without hesitation. Another big plus with using Green Step is that they did seem environmentally conscious. The sanding was, in fact, dust free which was great. Also the finish they used on the topcoats was a good choice for the environment. There was minimal touch up that we had to do to the baseboards after they finished the floors. So overall, a very clean and quality job. The floors look great.
Description of Work: 400 sq feet of hardwoods were refinished. Trim molding was stained and replaced, hardwood floors had 4 large and 3 small urine stains. Wood replaced at an affordable cost. Cracked stair riser replaced, stair nose and step replaced, added to the overall cost. Original cost was around $1600, given the urine damage, we felt greenstep did a great job here. We chose jacobean stain - had the grain "popped" (ask them about that) and 2 topcoats.

JT Flooring arrived on time for an estimate and, after measuring, gave a detailed written estimate. He said they would move 3 large bookcases and the refrigerator for me and we set a date for the floors to be refinished. I had all the rooms free of furniture (except the bookcases and refrigerator) and all doorways, cabinets, etc. taped and sealed. They showed up on time and, although they moved the bookcases, they failed to re-tape the plastic on the doorway and I ended up with a lot of dust in a room where all the living room furniture had been stored -- a hassle to get out of the upholstery. They didn't move the refrigerator but worked around it. Although they had my work phone number, they failed to phone when questions about the stain color and a water mark came up. The finish on the floor is "Bona" and although it's supposed to be semi-gloss, it has virtually no detectable gloss at all. They put the quarter round trim up before re-installing the 3 floor vent covers and none of these now fit properly.

I emailed Janar and he emailed me back with an estimate per sq ft depending on the polyurethane I chose. I told him I wanted the commercial (most expensive one) and he said that it might be two weeks before they could do it. But, it turned out that they could start the following Tuesday (5 days from then). The job took two days. The two man crew was extremely efficient. The first day they sanded and did 2 coats of stain. The second day they did the poly. The floors were very badly damaged from dog urine. Janar and his team knew just what color to hide it. If you know where to look you can still find the old stains. They are very dark, but look sooooo incredible. More incredible than I ever could have imagined. The grain of the wood is so beautiful and now you can see it! Everyone who sees it cannot believe the transformation. They are ready for another 50 years!
Description of Work: We had 300 sq ft, 6 stairs and a landing of 50 year old pet stained hardwood oak floors sanded, stained and polyed; new shoe trim. I also needed them to remove some very old carpet staples that had been hammered into the wood.

Janar was on schedule and efficient. He and his crew wasted no time and the only break I saw them take was a brief lunch break. The first day was the most labor intensive as this is when the floors were sanded and stained. The next morning they applied a seal and in the afternoon they returned and put on the first coat of polyurethane. Janar explained in the estimate the cost of the oil base poly and the water base poly. We elected to go with the water base poly even though it was more expensive ($162) as it has a shorter drying time. The following day was the final poly coat.
