Janar the owner came over to do the estimate himself. I wanted an opinion on whether the stairs could be refinished as they were or whether they needed to be replaced. Although the builder used a lower grade of wood under the carpeting, Janar thought he could fix the imperfections and stain it and it would come out ok. He said some builders use pine under the stairs and that does have to be replaced to match the oak. We were lucky that was not the case with us. He was punctual, polite, professional, and knowledgable. He gave me a verbal quote on the spot and e-mailed it to me from his tablet as we spoke. He also looked at the calendar and told me when he could get me on the schedule (very quickly, within about a week). I sent him a few questions and he answered promptly and gave me a new quote based on the additions I requested. I had gotten a few other estimates with similar pricing, but I liked what Janar had to say, he had good reviews, and I decided to go with him. The day of installation, the installer was prompt, courteous and knowledgable. He was there most of the day prepping the stairs and installing the bullnose edge. He did the first coat of stain before he left. The second day he was punctual again. He put down the first coat of polyurethane in the morning and then came back in the afternoon and did the second coat. They both answered all my questions and gave me helpful suggestions. Another installer came back and put the spindles back later in the afternoon. Everyone I met from Green Step was nice and helpful. It was a positive experience and the stairs look great. Thank you for making this process easy for us!
Description of Work: Green Step Flooring refinished my stairs after I removed the carpeting. They prepped the stairs, stained them, and then added a commercial grade non-slip polyurethane on top (per my request). I also asked them to add a bullnose edge to the top step.

Janar was prompt in coming out for an estimate and we had it the same day in an email. He worked with us on our schedule to accommodate us. We had been told by another company that we had red oak in the remainder of our house and although Janar was sure it was white oak he made a special trip to test the existing floor to insure he put in the same wood in our bedroom. It turned out to be white oak which is what he originally thought. The workmen showed up on time and were very courteous to my wife and to me answering our questions and giving us tips on how to maintain the flooring. When the workmen painted and installed the shoe molding they also painted the baseboards which was not in the work scope but they saw it needed to be done. There was some dust from the sanding but it was very little. They did an excellent job and we are very pleased.
Description of Work: We had carpet in our master bedroom and closet replaced with white oak flooring. They removed the carpet, and disposed of it. They installed painted white shoe molding in the bedroom and closet. They also installed wood vent covers in the bedroom to match the flooring, and installed a flush wood vent cover in the closet.

The Green Step team arrived on time, completed all work in a timely manner and were most professional. Some work that was originally scheduled was deemed unnecessary by the flooring team and my bill adjusted accordingly. About two weeks after the project was completed some minor flaws were noticed by my wife and myself. We called Janar and he took care of everything within a weeks time. Both the main team and the repairman were punctual, pleasant, and professional. In the last year or so I've had great deal of work done on my home, remodeled the kitchen and two baths including installation of a glass block walk-in shower, painted the interior and exterior, and had the roof replaced among other things. Green Step was the best firm we have worked with. We recommend them to all.
Description of Work: Sanded and refinished 1st floor approx 850 sq ft of hardwood flooring. One area was installed about 2007, the rest was original 1994. Areas are now all consistent, same color and finish.

Let me first state that Janar and Green Step Flooring did a top-notch job and I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone looking to have hardwood floors installed or hardwood floors refinished. Here's out story... To begin, my husband and I own a 1979 split-level in the heart of Cary. The home's foyer, family room, office and a half-bath are on the main floor which just so happens to be a concrete slab. When we began our remodeling efforts eight years ago, we installed tile in the foyer/half-bath and carpet in the family room/office. This past summer, though, we decided hardwood floors would look beautiful on this main floor, so we called up the father-son team that originally refinished our hardwoods on the upper floor of our home eight years ago. He told us it wouldn't be a problem to install hardwoods on the concrete slab if we: 1) installed roofing tar paper on top of the concrete, then 2) installed 1-by-4's (also known as sleepers) using a hilti gun approximating one foot apart from one another, and 3) installed the hardwoods perpendicular to the sleepers. So, being the trusting individuals we are, we said go-for-it! The sleepers were installed on Monday, the hardwoods arrived on Tuesday, and installation of the hardwoods occurred on Wednesday and Thursday and the sanding/finishing began on Friday. On Saturday, the hardwoods were cupped - severely. I knew it wasn't right, and asked the father-son team what could be done to fix it. He indicated that 'the cupping comes and goes with the seasons.' On top of this the sanding/finishing process had left a TON of dirt, debris, dust and drip marks - as the installer had used polyurethane. So, over the next few days, the installer tried to fix the drip marks and I had naively accepted the cupping as 'the norm' for a North Carolina home. As such, we asked our installer to leave the job since nothing he was doing to remedy the situation was actually working. So, the first person I called was Janar at Green Step Flooring. Janar came out and I expressed my discontent with the spills/drips from the polyurethane, along with the dirt/debris/dust that was left from the sanding/finishing job as I was hoping he could remedy the situation using his dust-free system. Unfortunately, though, he shared with me that the 'refinishing' process was the least of my concerns and that the cupping was too severe. I explained the installation process the father-son team had utilized and he shook his head in dismay - knowing that my husband and I had fallen victim to a poor hardwood floor installation and that the floors could not be salvaged - rather we needed to 'start over.' He itemized everything that would need to occur for a proper installation on concrete. In fact, he cited the NWFA as his source for his protocols, too. Mind you, this is the first time the NWFA had even crossed my mind - I didn't know it existed. That was a BIG thought to swallow, as my husband and I had already paid the father-son team and were only looking to refinish the floors to 'fix' the cupping. After contacting the NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) per Janar's recommendation, Janar was right - the floors had to be removed and proper installation needed to occur for concrete. There was the engineered wood route or the hardwood route we could take. If we were to do the engineered wood route, we would have needed to have had the concrete cleaned and being a 70's split-level, everyone was sure there was asbestos lingering in the glue that was still affixed to concrete floors (which we had tiled over), so we opted to still pursue the solid hardwood floor installation. Knowing that my husband and I had not done our due-diligence at the onset of our hardwood installation project, I went ahead and contacted EVERY hardwood flooring contractor (per the best reviews, Angie's List, recommendations, you name it) and met with them each day after work for about two to the three weeks. It was an exhausting time, but we were determined to do it right if we had to do it over. No one had won us over like Janar and Green Step Flooring, though. He was honest, knowledgeable, certified by the NWFA as an inspector and installer/finisher (which, by the way, not everyone is), and has the best sanding/finishing product in Raleigh. So, approximately a month after initially reaching out to him, I followed up and asked him if he would help mend our situation and be our contractor. Janar put us on 'the books' and, in no time, we had (and still do) beautiful hardwood floors on our main living space - which just so happens to be concrete. In addition, there isn't any cupping nor debris/dirt/dust of any kind. Overall, If you're looking for a hardwood installation or sanding/refinishing job, then do not look any further than Green Step Flooring. Their install, sand, and finish process was stress-free, well-organized, clean, and truly a 'breath of fresh air' from what my husband and I had recently experienced with the prior contractor.
Description of Work: * Assessment of current hardwood floor installation from pervious contractor * Installation of new hardwood floors * Site sand and finish of new hardwood floors

The project was discussed with three different companies on Angie's List. Green Step Flooring was selected based upon price and knowledge of flooring by the owner (Tsaro Janar) and recommendations provided. Project was started on agreed upon date and workers showed up promptly everyday and worked in professional manner. Cleanup was performed daily. The installers explained what they were going to be doing as far as general installation and details. When the project was completed, the area was cleaned. The installers treated the installation of the flooring, molding, and thresholds as if it were their own house. Our experience in dealing with Green Step was very satisfactory and we would use them in future hardwood flooring projects.
Description of Work: The existing carpet flooring in great room, office area, sun room, two closets and hallway were removed and replaced with stranded carbonized bamboo9 flooring. The approximate total area is 900 sq. ft. Also included was furniture removal, reinstallation, and installed of quarter round molding, and bamboo thresholds.

Janar is extremely patient and responsive. We had just purchased the home the day before the work was to begin, and had been told the keys were under the front mat to let his crew in Thursday morning. Unfortunately, the home had been dead-bolted from the inside (for EVERY entrance to the home!) by the former owner, who had left through a self-locking garage door (the keys to which were left inside the garage!!) so his crew were not able to get in until the next morning. It had to have been very frustrating for them, and I was at work unable to figure out a solution. My husband and I actually had to break into our new home that night through a basement window in order to get the dead bolts unlocked so they could come in the next morning! But that's another story. The point is, Janar was so nice about it, and his crew did come back the next morning and got to work right away. In just 3 days they had not only finished the floors, but they had helped me pick out a stain (which was great, because his crew has very good design taste and I love the color we decided on, it's absolutely perfect), applied it, and polished the floors to the exact right level of shine (the crew also helped me decide on that, and they were again 100% right, it fits so well with the look of the house). So, in sum, I'm fairly amazed at their patience, impressed by their excellent quality of work and grateful for their esthetics advice. We're also happy they use green products (barely any odor!) and left no dust behind. HIGHLY recommend Green Step Flooring. Janar and his crew are true professionals who clearly care about hardwoods.
Description of Work: Janar and his team removed old, ugly carpeting from 3 bedrooms and refinished, stained and polished the hardwoods underneath. They also refinished, stained and polished roughed-up hardwoods (that had had large area rugs covering the discoloration) in two other rooms in the house, a large formal living room and a medium sized formal dining room. So, in total, they performed work on 5 rooms.

A pleasure from start to finish. Green Step was quick to schedule my work as I had just closed on my house the day Janar came by for an estimate. I wanted to move into the home right away and Green Step was up to the task. The owner, Janar, is easy to reach and clear in his communications. I met three of his team members (I cannot even call them employees, as their state of mind was above that of "employee"). These guys are CRAFTSMAN! They are trained above and beyond what is required in the industry and it shows. I am impressed with the color, the finish and the joinery work done. Stunning! This red oak flooring is in six rooms of my home and needed to be just right. Green Step delivered! (thanks!)
Description of Work: Perfect! I hesitate to use "perfect" as an appropriate word regarding wood floors, yet I am SO delighted with the work performed on my new floors -- no other adjective will work. The owner, Janar, gave a more in depth analysis of my damaged flooring than 3 other flooring companies. Additionally, Janar has more certification than the other installers who looked at my home. For my project, a factory finished floor needed to be refinished PLUS new wood flooring needed to be installed throughout my entire newly purchased home. Janar determined that his company could sand and refinish the existing damaged wood and blend it seamlessly into new red oak flooring. It is noteworthy that the work was completed by the Green Step team while I was packing up my old home in another state. A key feature of this project was Janar's ability to understand my plea for "light color, with a little red plus a little yellow". I am very pleased that a professional was able to understand my request, even when I could not put it into words. Janar prevented me from making a mistake on the stain selection, whew! The Green Step team custom blended two stains, giving me a light yet warm wood flooring which works beautifully with my mahogany antiques as well as my green walls. I recommend this company without hesitation! Another noteworthy event was the follow-up. One area of the floor did not take the stain correctly. One of the Green Step team promptly came to my home and repaired the flooring to my satisfaction. I was enthralled watching a professional craftsman as he worked the wood.

They were very thorough, and they did a fantastic job. Green Step gave us a really good price. They told us ways to save money, like ripping up the existing carpet ourselves. They do commercial work, as well as residential. They are able to order in bulk, saving residential customers money. They gave us the most we could get for the money we had. My only disappointment was they don't do carpet! They did a fantastic job, and we were really pleased with their work. The installers were very respectful. They removed their shoes, and cleaned up. They strive for perfection and they thought the job should have been even more perfect! I would give the A's, all around!

Since we're new homeowners in Cary, NC, we needed help finding contractors. We joined Angie's List and have found wonderful contractors! Our first reno before we moved in was the flooring. While the first floor was wood, it desperately needed to be refinished. As the second floor and two stairways were carpeted, we wanted to change that to all wood. As we were also planning to reno the third floor attic, that stairway also needed wood. We had several contractors come in to give us estimates. From the very first meeting with Janar, we were thoroughly impressed by his professionalism and knowledge. He quoted the jobs separately on site as we first requested and emailed same to us immediately. Upon review, we decided to have all the work done at the same time and he adjusted the estimate accordingly. Green Step Flooring was in our home for two full weeks doing this mammoth project! The work started and ended exactly as scheduled. The work crews were great workers who proved their skills daily and often worked extra hours to stay on schedule. They cleaned up the job site at the end of each work day. They made sure to contact us to reach mutually agreed resolutions when questions and/or concerns came up during the process. In addition, they came back to do some minor finish work as agreed. Of note, we had several other contractors doing estimates in the house during this floor work. Every one of them commented on the craftsmanship of the oak floors and made note of their name. The end product is an absolute beauty! We simply could not be happier!
Description of Work: 1. First floor existing wood was sanded, stained and sealed.2. Second floor and both staircases had the old carpet removed, some floor damage repaired, then all new oak floors installed, sanded, stained and sealed.3. Third floor staircase was also upgraded to the new oak steps which were installed, sanded, stained and sealed.

Completely satisfied. I went with the more expensive finish offering...Bona Traffic...which added another $600. I hope it satisfies as expected to withstand dog claws and high-heeled shoes pounding the floors. I only wish Janar (owner) offered a longer warranty on this finish (only 1yr - standard) considering the steep upcharge.
Description of Work: 1,600 sqft of Refinished hardwood floors & stairs (removed carpet to reveal hardwoods underneath) - Sanded, deeper stain applied and Bona Traffic 3-coat finish. The crew worked long hard hours to get the job ready and complete within 4 days. Showed up timely and as expected. This crew is busy....booked out 25 days advance. Great Job!

I called 3 companies for estimates, and Green Step's price was right in range with the others. The crew was on time, efficient, and professional. I was around the house during most of the workday, and the crew did not take many breaks during the day. The first day was mostly adding the new hardwood and sanding. They continued sanding the next day and put on the stain and a topcoat. They finished on the third day with more topcoat and buffing. The water based stain and top coat dried quickly without heavy fumes. We are very pleased with the final product.

They were professional, prompt and courteous. We have had experience with other companies, and were surprised at how quickly the project was completed. While refinishing the existing floors, there was literally no dust from the sanders. We were surprised and delighted because we have had experience with other "sandless" systems. After the project was complete, we noticed just a couple of "touch-ups" that needed to be completed, and they returned the next day to complete the project to our satisfaction. We would highly recommend Greenstep.

Overall, the job took a day longer than estimated but turned out beautifully. I opted for Bona Traffic Finish which was an upgrade from the estimate but should be significantly more durable. One caveat! The Gloss Traffic will not give you a high gloss anywhere near what you would have with solvent based Polyurethane, even with three coats. I ended up with a good semi-gloss though - which I am happy with. I would certainly recommend Greenstep but do your homework first concerning all the differences in floor finish.

This is Janar, the owner of Green Step Flooring, Inc. This review is NOT for our company's work performed and about the bubbles in the floor. We have tried to dispute the comments but I have been unsuccessful to contact the person who wrote the comment. Please read the line where AngiesList asks if the work was performed after all by Green Step Flooring, Inc., Heather Wood said "NO". We are continuing to solve this misunderstanding.

Excellent work! Took day and half to put the flooring in about 450sq ft. Moved all furniture appliances and remixed everything. At one point they had to move the kitchen Island and reinstall it, which they did without any fuss. I was pleasantly surprised that they kept the noise down to a minimum.
