Excellent design services at a very fair price. We've worked with Mike twice, each time for landscape design. I wanted to do the installation and planting myself because I enjoy it. Mike created easy-to-follow color-coded plans, making sure to include plants that we requested. His designs are attractive, tidy but not stuffy, natural, and make intuitive sense. Other designers were outside my budget and seemed interested mostly in installation. Mike wasn't that way at all. He was genuinely excited to create an attractive design for our yard. He also comes across as a pleasant, friendly, down-to-earth guy, which matters. Definitely planning to work with Mike again!

It was ok overall but not happy with communication of what was in the price of the landscaping design. Mike came out and went through review of the yard and what we wanted. We focussed on bed around front tree (we suggested a wall), sides of the drive way, and a shaded area on side of the house in the front and back yard. In the review Mike pointed out drainage improvements and some other areas to add beds to make the backyard look nice. He discussed some design ideas which were were happy with. He sent us a quote which was high for us but we where happy with the discussion and thought it included all the design discussions we had. Mike came out again with his landscaper and we reviewed the design again with him and the landscaper which. All the ideas were discussed again and thought agreed upon but when we talked about the front area around the tree we desided to go with a more expensive stone for the wall. Mike sent us another quote which was thousands higher than previous quote. We desided to go with him because we liked the design vision we talked about. I did even get a rough draft sketch to submit to the HOA for approval. Should have known at that time that we were not getting all we discussed because it seemed to lack some items. I did point out this to Mike and he indicated he understood. They did the work and the work around the front tree was great. They did improve the drainage and add some other items of discussion but missed the whole side of the house that was shaded and also no edging in the backyard beds. I brought this up and received mulch on that side but no plants and some edging for the back. Mike appologized and said he forgot about the side of the house and the edging. For the amount we paid I was a little upset at what we got. Mike tried to make up for it by giving us the mulch on the side of the house and some (not all) edging for free but in the end I just felt like we did not get what we thought we were paying for. I recommend if any one uses there service to make sure you get a detailed plan of what it will look like and are getting before desiding. The yard does look nice, the wall the front is great, but just seemed expensive for what we got and now I am going to have to invest more money and my time to finish our vision.

Mike designed a landscape for my front yard according to my specifications -- evergreen, drought-tolerant, and deer-tolerant plants. I had part of the design implemented and saved the rest for a later time for budgetary reasons. The work they did was good, however, getting in touch with Mike is nearly impossible. He took a week to respond to emails. And at the end, three plants weren't available. He supposedly ordered them but I haven't heard from the company since. They didn't return my phone call, and I don't expect to hear from them again.

Mike was delayed because of the rain, but once they got started they knocked things out quickly. Did a great job selecting the right plants to create a natural barrier on my property line. I have used them for 2 projects so far and would definitely be my first pick for any future ones.

I called Mike and arranged for him to come see the house where we shared our thoughts in what we wanted to do. Mike took those ideas and created a landscape design for us to confirm. This included all of the plant types, number, placement and cost. We agreed the design with very minor changes as it was exactly what we were looking for. The design was at no cost as we agreed Mike do the work. Mike confirmed the start date and his crew came out and did the work removing sod, integrating topsoil into the planting areas and planting the shrubs and trees. The crew relocated sprinkler heads to make sure all the plants received water. Once the plants were in place, mulch was spread around the entire area. The work took about a week - one day it was a blank area and the next it was full of plants, shrubs and trees. You wouldn't have known anyone was there because Mike's crew completely cleaned up the area. The last step was planting 9 trees, 3 different varieties, in the backyard where Mike placed them in a way to make them look most natural. The trees were staked and mulched. They look great and we're not talking small trees you buy at the local Lowe's or Home Depot. These are large 9-10 foot trees. I have a before and after photo of the front yard but the photos do not do the landscaping justice. (Note that the small trees in the lawn area were ones I planted.) We liked Mike's work so much, we're considering having another area of the property landscaped in the fall. They did a great job and we highly recommend Artworks Landscaping & Design.
Description of Work: Mike provided a landscape design for the front and back yard as well as a large island area at the side of the house. We agreed the design and Mike's crew installed the landscaping.

What I really liked about them is how they were able to create what I had envisioned. We were replacing all of the old landscaping that had been there for fifteen years. He did a really good job at creating a landscaping plan on what I was looking for. Mike Curtis, the owner, really took into account what I liked, what look I liked, and how I had wanted the house to look. When his crew did the actual work with the prepping and the planting, they did an excellent job! Once they started the job, they were able to get done promptly. The plants have done very well. He was very responsive and kept in good communication by phone and email. We are very happy with the whole process from the design to the installation of the landscaping.

Mike was great to work with, very professional and responsive. His crew are dedicated and professional.
Description of Work: We worked with Mike to design a completely new back garden. Mike was able to create a design using our favorite perennials, the design complements the size of our yard and blends well with the style of our home. The work was done in October last year, Mike's crew worked thru some terrible weather, rain and cold conditions to get it done. Due to the time of the year some perennials were not available, but Mike returned in the Spring to plant the remaining plants. Although it is still early in the season, the plants are growing well and we can start to visualize what it will look like when everything fills in. Mike and his crew have created what will be a true garden oasis that we will enjoy for many years to come.

To deal with the significant grade in the backyard, the first step was to install a retaining wall. We chose a Celtik solution and are very pleased with how it looks and the quality of the installation. Over 40 cubic yards of fill dirt and top soil were brought in to prepare the surface for fescue sod. Additional compost and soil mix was brought in to prepare beds for planting. About 20 plants were installed along the border of the retaining wall and another 7 plants were installed in the new beds adjacent to the patio. We are delighted with all aspects of this project--the project design, quality of the work, the team doing the work, and the results!
Description of Work: Mike Curtis met with us a few months back and made recommendations on how create a small lawn and clean up a "natural area" in our backyard. The backyard is wooded and has a significant slope that needed to be "tamed". He made immediate recommendations without needing to go through a long and detailed design process. We were comfortable with his recommendations and got on his calendar for the fall. They have just completed the installation of a retaining wall, new beds, and a sod fescue lawn. We are delighted with the results and with the entire team. We enthusiastically recommend Artworks.

This is a long story with a happy ending. Months ago Artworks came out to look at the job and were to email me the estimate. Weeks went by when I did not hear from them. I reviewed them on Angies List with an unsatisfactory report. Artworks contacted me ant sent me a duplicate copy of the original estimate, which for whatever reason had not gotten through to me. Meanwhile, the job had grown, so they came out and gave me a second estimate, and we decided to hire them. Then, the summer rains came, and their ability to schedule our job was delayed by the rain. Finally, at the end of September they were able to do the work for us, and they did an excellent job at a reasonable price.

Fantastic. We had some dying bushes in front of our house and wanted a raised garden with a stone border to replace them. Other than that basic idea, we had no idea what plants would look good, what stones we should have, or really what it should look like. Mike had a great plan. There was one plant we were not excited about and suggested another one. He told us why that one would not work but gave us another similar suggestion that would be good. We appreciated his flexibility. Mike was great to work with. They did the job while we were at work and we came home to a beautiful garden. It was even better than we were anticipating. We really liked them and will definitely contact them for future needs. The only negative thing I can say is that it was not inexpensive. It was more than $1200 for a small garden but it seems like landscaping can be expensive. But we are very happy with the final product.

I enjoyed working with Mike and his team. I had contacted a few other companies in addition to Artworks and they all did the usual coming over, looking at what I wanted to do and then giving me a price and talking about the logistics. Honestly that was all I was looking for, someone with reasonable prices and a reasonable time frame. My only intentions were to have a patio installed when I was looking for someone to do it. When I met Mike, he was very friendly and open with ideas and suggestions in addition to what I wanted. I asked him for his thoughts on my small area and what could be done and I was pleasantly surprised by his suggestions. He didn't try and upsell me on anything, but instead just gave me a number of options that I could choose if I wanted to implement or not. He was just throwing out ideas that I never thought about and I loved them so much that I had them included in my design. Simply put, he had a conversation with me instead of just taking measurements and giving me a quote. In addition to the patio and after listening to Mike's ideas, I decided to have them create a dry bed for me and create a landscaped area. I knew I would probably never get around to finishing the backyard on my own and from the picture he painted for me I knew it would be best to have his crew put it all together. His price was very fair, and even if it was slightly higher than I had planned I felt the most comfortable with Mike and his personality that I knew I wanted to work with him on my project. Mike kept me regularly updated on the status of the project including things such as delays because of the weather. He was also amazing at providing suggestions to the types of plants that would best be suited in my back yard for that specific type of environment (mostly shade). I would then look up each of these plants and get back to him at which ones I liked. It was amazing the service he provided. Thats ideally what I would like any service company to offer and Mike, thankfully, does that perfectly. Even months after my project was completed I had a question I wanted to ask Mike about a plant in my backyard and he replied to me in a quick and helpful manner. The fact that he still took the time to keep that relationship with me shows that his company has its priorities straight and hopefully Ill have another opportunity to work with them again.
Description of Work: A 9.5' x 10' patio was installed using pavers I bought from a home improvement store. I also had Artworks remove sod, bring in top soil, triple shredded mulch and dig a trench to create a dry creek bed with 1 ton of Delaware stones. In addition to the prep work they did I had them select, transport and plant a Japanese maple and several other plants. They also offered to help me return left over pavers I had from where I bought them, although at a small charge, it was quicker and easier than I would have been able to do it.

My backyard is pitched at a downhill angle from one side to the other. Years ago we had leveled part of the yard for an above ground pool near the deck. The pool is gone, but the ground that was cut into the hill was eroding badly. I decided to use the level area as a patio / garden area and break the project into affordable pieces. Mike came out and discussed how we could best accomplish the project. The most important part being the retainer wall and steps, we chose to do this first. The crew did an excellent job. The looks of the wall exceeded our expectations. When they were done, they cleaned up completely and re-leveled all the dirt so it appeared the wall has always been there. The workers were very personable, and knowledgeable. It was obvious they all took pride in their work and the company they work for.

I called them and described what I wanted. He said he would be happy to come out, take a look, and give me an estimate. He came out and we walked through. He saw exactly what was needed and actually pointed out a few other things that he said he could take care of at the same time. He said he would get back to me with an estimate in the next couple of days, but I didn't hear from him. After couple of weeks I e-mailed him back mentioning I was still hoping to hear from him, but never go a response.

We called customer immediately to apologize for her not receiving her estimate because it was, beyond a doubt, sent out shortly after our meeting and we were very surprised to get this review. While we are extremely happy to be able to remedy this situation we were informed by her that she did not write this review but instead was called and solicited by Angie's List. She told us that she informed the Angie's List interviewer that she was uncomfortable reviewing our company and willing to let it go since we did not do any business together. Customer informed us she uses several email addresses that channel into a single email and, while it is rare, we have had email issues in the past on our end so we can only assume that this is an internet error and we are happy to have the communication resolved. The customer has not had the work done, our estimate has been resent and we are certainly grateful for the opportunity to bid on this project.

The workmanship was excellent and they were a pleasure to work with. Not the cheapest, but the price was very fair and the quality was outstanding. And the crew was great - nice guys, always on time, worked every day until the project was finished. I would hire Artworks again, no questions asked!
Description of Work: Mike and his crew designed and installed a complex patio, walkway and sitting wall/firepit in our wooded back yard. Excellent. We couldn't be happier with the finished product; Mike and his crew were a pleasure to deal with.
Description of Work: Artworks replaced my aging concrete front walkway with a beautiful walk and patio area using multi-colored paving stones. The design included a "circle kit" to form an area for a small patio table and chairs. As part of the design, a scruffy "natural area" was converted using a mix of mulch and plantings, including knockout roses, various groundcovers, shrubs and small trees. In addition, the final product included low voltage landscape lighting with both path lights and up lights to highlight the trees in the landscape.

Mike listened carefully to our description of what we were looking for in our backyard makeover. He gave us good suggestions, and drew up a plan on the spot. He helped us develop a plan that we could easily build on/upgrade in the future if we decide we want to use the yard differently. Mike's crew worked quickly to remove all existing plant material and pavers to create a and quot;blank slateand quot;. They brought in rocks for the swale, and then they brought in dirt and planted all the new items within another day. The actual work in our yard was completed within just a few days. The crew worked fast, did a great job, and cleaned everything up impeccably. We are very pleased with the outcome, the yard looks great (it is now 3 months later), and the plants are greening up nicely. We will likely have him come back and assist with another project.
Description of Work: Designed landscape plan for our small backyard space (approx 20'x20'), taking into account our priorities of low maintenance and deer resistant plantings. Removed all existing plant materials (grass, shrubs) and brick pavers. Rebuilt swale using river stone. Planted 2 trees, 25 shrubs, and ornamental grasses. Installed stepping stone walkway and lighting package (pathway lights and tree up-lighting).

I called Artworks based on the reviews here to do a landscaping design and planting for my front yard and back yard. Mike came to performed a consultation, twenty minutes late.... ok, I can deal with that. We spoke about the project, gave him the plot plan. Theoretically, the design was going to be finished in 2-3 days, apparently it was an easy one... Ten days after the meeting, I e-mailed him to inquiry about the design.... got no reply to my email. I called them I spoke to Michelle (who was not particularly nice, btw) and she told me she was going to tell Mike and let me know. It has passed 4 days from that phone call and not heard from them.... perhaps my $5k-10k project was not very excited for Artworks.... Overall, unprofessional. Just wasted these two weeks waiting for Mike or Michelle to reply.

Response from Artworks Landscaping & Design
In order to prevent these situations from happening, our customers are informed when setting up a landscape design meeting that drawings can take 2-3 weeks to be completed, especially during our busy spring season when this meeting took place. We are not unlike any other company in that we hate getting any type of bad review but the Customer was contacted to set up the meeting to go over the plan and we received no further response. I completely understand the frustration in how long it can take to receive a drawing after the initial meeting and I apologize for any miscommunication. If I had known her frustration or disappointment I would have discounted the price of the design and I regret not being able to offer that to her. Landscape designs are a creative process and in the middle of a busy season they can take longer to complete due to distractions that create "writer's block," so to speak. Each design is custom drawn and we do not create "cookie cutter" designs nor do we rush through our drawings. Most designs we create turn into projects that we get to install and it is very important to us that we do them right and creatively. The delay had nothing to do with not wanting the job; we treat all jobs, big or small, the same and there is no doubt I regret losing this or any project. I am actually caught more off guard by the comment about Michele, our office manager, as we receive many compliments about our office staff as well as our crew employees.

I was not happy with the way they handled last fall's leaf problem. I expressly told management that where I live they cannot blow leaves into the street for pick up, leaves have to be packed into paper bags or disposable boxes. The workers avoided my house for weeks, I finally had to rake by myself. When they did show up all the leaves in front were blown into the street. I had to pick those up as well. I now have another lawn service.

The landscaping project was perfect. Design was perfect; Mike completely got what I wanted, design was perfect first try, job done well. It went so well I then hired them to help me on lawn -- put in a new lawn because I had an overwhelming weed problem develop, and then ongoing maintenance from there. This went less well. The new lawn has as many weeds as that which was torn up, and while this may be part of the risk with new seeding (I don't know, I don't have experience with yards, this is my first house), it has gotten out of control, despite my requests to manage it through the seed-rooting period and promise to pay whatever it costs. I've had to ask sometimes a couple of times over period of weeks for them to mow, pick up equipment left behind, accomplish service they offered in the first place, and send me invoices for services rendered. I got invoice today for something I agreed to pay in August, and I had to remind them twice over months; I was trying to be a good customer. I just think they are overwhelmed with too much business now, and long term arrangements may not be their forte; perhaps better just on project basis.

The project went very well. While the estimate was not the lowest (we had several estimates done), we went with Mike and his team based on his knowledge and experience. He was able to listen and understand our needs, and at the same time, offer common sense recommendations. He and his team were very professional. They kept us informed on progress along the way. Several months after the work was done, several plants did not make it through the hot summer, despite watering them on a regular basis. I contacted Mike and he has agreed to replace the plants that were lost at no additional charge. I also plan on having Mike and his team do additional work this fall (aerate and seed some difficult areas I've had trouble growing grass).
Description of Work: Main project was to re-level brick patio area of backyard due to water accumulating near the house. We wanted to keep the bricks and re-use them. We also had retaining stone wall installed where wood timbers existed previously. Bushes and other plants were added in the backyard. Also had some large holly bushes (trees) removed in the front yard. Added another stone wall in the front as well as new bushes/flowers planted.

The men came out, they did their mowing and blowing. These guys are extrememly fast--don't know if that is a good thing or not. I'm actually not sure how mujch each visit was, sorry. The thing I do like about this company is they will not come out every week just to make a buck, but they actually look at your lawn to see if it needs cutting. Also, if you have a problem of any kind they will work with you to solve it. I had a small problem with not knowing when they were here and just getting a bill, so I asked if they would toss a card or something under the mat. The owners are so very nice.

I did not use them for this particular project because they did not have all the services that I wanted, and they referred another company for me. However, I received the nicest note from somebody I declined services for. I will definitely use him in the future. I think he establishes good working relationship by doing that. In addition, he made landscaping fine for me. The person I spoke to was Mike, and he is a fine man whom I can trust. He was really nice. I rate him high overall. He was great. I just loved him.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Artworks Landscaping & Design this month, and he gave me a pointer as well. I wanted turf management done and called them for a quote. He quoted me $5200.

It was very quick, a good bid from the owner, and the landscaping was done beautifully. I'm quite happy with the results.

I contacted Artworks via a phone message and my call was promptly returned by the owner's wife, Michele. I explained that we needed help getting our beds into shape and were also considering some new landscaping. I shared that we were concerned about initiating a relationship with a new landscaper since our one and only experience with a landscaper was negative. My first impression of Artworks was good based on my conversation with Michele, so I agreed to a consultation with her husband Mike. We discussed the work that needed to be done and he shared his ideas wiithout assuming that we would hire him to do the work. Mike was easy to talk to, straightforward, no pressure and I liked his suggestions. He promptly provided an estimate and since we waited a couple of months until we decided to go ahead with the work, he returned a second time to go over everything to make sure we were getting what we wanted. We had questions about mulch and Mike crafted a lengthy email regarding our options and spent a considerable amount of time locating the specific type of mulch we liked. He didn't anticipate extra trips to the dump and did not pass the cost along to us. Mike and his crew worked hard and cleaned up each day before they left. Upon completion, Mike returned to go over everything and make sure we were satisfied, but was very disappointed when he saw that following the morning rain mulch had overflowed from several beds in various spots. He promised to make good on his work and returned two days later and installed edging and said that if we didn't like it he'd remove it and come up with another option. The original plan did not include edging so we shared the cost of the edging. We were very pleased with our experience with Artworks and would not hesitate to work with Mike, Michele and their crew again.
Description of Work: Removed and disposed of bushes and fabric, cleaned, weeded and edged beds and edged lawn side of driveway, extensive pruning of trees, bushes and ornamental grasses, transplanted rose bushes and planted new shrubs, mulched, fertilized and preemergent on all beds and installed edging along beds.
