I found this company on an e-bouletin board at work. Had I been an Angie's List member at that time and read the other reviews first, I probably would have called someone else. I used Affordable Handlyman twice. I was satisfied with my first experience (B), but not my second (D). In both cases, they were on time and friendly. The first project was to turn a tired, unused bathroom into a small, somewhat unfinished bonus area. This went well. The second project was to install two interior doors in existing openings and replace an exterior window with a new patio door. Given the amount of money I was spending, I expected quality work. Afterall, their web site lists custom wood working and kitchen and bath remodels. Instead of adjusting the openings and moldings to make room for the doors, it was as if the doors were "wedged" into place. Rather than shortening the chair rail and baseboards, the door casings were notched so that the chair rail and baseboards could be used at their existing lengths. Since the owner is related to someone at work, I only asked that I be refunded the cost for new moldings, which I received, along with an apology. I replaced the moldings myself. I did extend an invitation for them to come back and fix the problem, but (probably given the tone of my letter), they chose my other option of a partial refund. With regard to price, it would have been fair had the work on the second project been completed properly.
Description of Work: Two separate projects, completed within a monthof each other: (1) convert small, unused bathroom into bonus space and (2) install two interior and one exterior door.

This was a bad overall experience. I learned that not everyone's idea of a good job is the same. Also, I should have gotten everything in writing. Now we need to hire someone to come in and correct the things this group did incorrectly.
Description of Work: We hired this company on the recommendation of a friend of my husband, to paint the exterior of our house and to do some rotted wood repair work. It seemed a little odd to me from the beginning that we had to keep getting them to come back in order to do an estimate because they kept missing major portions of the house, like the deck and screened porch. They also would not give me, verbally, how long their warranty was, only that they used a certain level of Sherwin-Williams Paint and that it would "probably last about 20 years." Mr. Cox,one of the owners, told me (several times) from the beginning that they would only hand wash, not use a power sprayer to clean the house because it drives moisture behind the wood and can cause rot, so several days later, when his employee drove up with a power sprayer and began to clean the house I was very surprised. Of course, I ran around all morning cleaning up the black gunk that was forced in under the windows and doors by the power sprayer. This same man who did the washing did a very good job of scraping down and sanding the peeling paint on our deck in preparation for new paint. Several days later, the entire crew came to begin the painting. I noticed right away that they were not caulking seams around door casings, filling nail holes, sanding or scraping bad places in the wood, or filling cracks in the wood. They would just begin painting no matter the condition of the piece of wood. That afternoon after they left, I picked up numerous cigarette butts out of my yard, and also saw that they had cut out about a third of the canopy of one of my large camellias without asking (or even telling) me. On the second day, I mentioned the obvious absence of caulking around one of the door frames, and Mr. Cox said that it was a punch list item! He said that he didn't work on that particular door, and that he was caulking all of his, and that it was not his fault! He also said that if he had known that we wanted nail holes, cracks, etc. filled, his estimate would have been more. That evening we decided that we were not at all happy with the work this group was doing. My husband called Mr. Cox and told him to figure up the cost for the work they had completed, and we would pay them and they could leave.

He did an excellent job. I can no longer work from ladders or the roof and I knew the gutters had to be cleaned before winter comes. Excellent communication and he even provided some additonal information about the gutters that I was not aware of. Very pleasant to work with. Would definitely use again.
Description of Work: Had my gutters hand cleaned of debris. All leaves were removed from from roof.
