This is the third time we have used this contractor. The reason is (and proven again) is he has access to the best of the best and can use them when the job needs them. No waiting or trying to find a reliable and good - - 1. Drywall installer 2. Electrician 3. Painter 4. Handyman (to hang large light fixture or ceiling fan.) The top reason to use Nemec Construction Company is Chris Nemec does not stop until you are happy with every detail, no matter how small. All of his crew cleaned up everyday after their work and picked up everything possible. They try to control drywall dust, (but note, it is not possible to keep all dust controlled). Job was finished on time and we are totally pleased with results.
Description of Work: Removed two french doors and all moldings surrounding 6 foot opening between two interior rooms. Extended interior wall to 2 feet leaving 4 foot opening. Removed all moldings on adjacent six foot opening. Dry walled additional wall and made the two openings into a four foot and six foot opening into arched doorways. The two arches match a current arched doorway. Moved electrical connections in ceiling of sunroom, repaired current bead board ceiling, sanded ceiling (had stain sealer), added crown molding, primed and painted ceiling. Primed and painted all walls involved in remodel. Installed and hung large chandelier and installed fan - all on three way switch.

Ok, Chris Nemec has a plumbing contractor that he works with named Kevin Reese. Kevin does have his own business (kevinreeseplumbing@gmail.com) but also works through Nemec Construction. Kevin was absolutely amazing. He first phoned me to set up a time to meet so that he can look over the situation. Over the phone he gave me a general quote which was pretty close to the final cost. He came over and said that he could do the job in one day and for me to go ahead and order the hot water heater that I wanted (btw: an incredible Rheem Marathon) and let him know when it arrives. He also gave me the name of an electrician (Jeremy Edney - also a great guy) that I should contact to see if he can do the electrical part of the job at the same time the plumbing is going in. We all coordinated for Friday and Jeremy had to go out of town at the last minute but sent his partner over. Kevin arrived right on time soon followed by the electrician and they proceeded to knock out the job in about 5 hours total. With only a slight break in time where the was no water. Kevin even needed to have a metalworker friend of his make a custom stand for the water heater because Lowes/HomeDepot only carry stands for 50 gallon tanks. It was expertly made and actually looks kind of cool in the garage. The heater is in, works incredibly well, no issues, leaks, rust - nothing except clean, clear, hot water. The spigot in the back looks like it was put in when the house went up and was expertly installed as well. Kevin even removed the old heater from the crawlspace (NOT an easy task) for free and hauled it away. As far as I am concerned, there is no one else to recommend if you need a plumber in the Asheville area. He is so good to work with and so professional that you just can't go wrong with anything he does. A+ all the way Kevin!
Description of Work: Removed an old 47 gallon hot water heater that was in a crawl space on one side of the house and replaced it with an 85 gallon tank located in the garage on the opposite side of the house. Also added a water spigot in the back side of the house.

They were great. It was for a pretty big job, it was a house we were under contract on, but didn't get. So it had nothing to do with their service, we just ended up no longer needing them.

Our experience was better than great! Seriously...he and all his crew and all subs that he recommended were punctual, on budget and professional. His work was excellent and on several occasions his suggestions of a minor change here or there was always the right way to go. We had expected our first floor re model including a full new kitchen would drag on and on. Chris was on top of the schedule and we never found ourselves waiting on something that wasn't thought of or ordered. Not only would we use him again....we already have plans to do so and would not consider using anyone else.
Description of Work: We selected Chris Nemec after reading about him on Angie's list. We interviewed several contractors but were quite clear he would be our choice. Our project had a very tight deadline and included all new wood flooring throughout the main floor. Chris did all the prep and dismantling of old kitchen to prepare for floors. He hung new doors, installed new vanity in powder room, repaired and installed tile and drain in laundry area. He handled all the new kitchen dry wall as well as many dry wall repairs in various rooms. There was an unexpected structural issue associated with a decision to move a wall for better flow. While an engineer was hired by us Chris handled the tricky supports and was not flustered about this new challenge. The main job was building a new kitchen including cabinets, backsplash and, all electrical, install and hook up of all appliances as well as all plumbing. Chris recommended the cabinet source as well as many other suppliers. They were all easy to work with and all seemed to like working with Chris as well.

Contacting Nemec in regard to some inspection floor joist concerns. After viewing the photos we sent he assured us they were very normal and within normal construction. He responded to our questions and concerns in a very professional and timely manner
Description of Work: Chris Nemec was awesome! After reviewing photos of our concerns in regards to some floor joists he assured us this was perfectly normal. Knowing our concerns he could have come out and charged us a bundle but he was honest and professional. I will definitely continue to recommend Nemec Construction!

Having used Chris Nemec before we did not hesitate to contact him for our next project. With an upcoming anniversary celebration that was being held in our backyard, we wanted a large free standing pergola. I had seen a picture online of a large pergola with heavy timbers. Armed with just this casual description, and asking for this giant 14 foot by 14 foot pergola, Chris more than delivered. He was putting the last coat of stain on the pergola the day before our 50th anniversary party. It is the sturdiest pergola I have ever seen. I highly recommend this perfectionist and would be happy to show off this pergola to anyone who wants to see it. It has transformed our backyard to an outdoor room. Chris and his crew are the best!

The home we purchased had a very large exterior window (7 foot x 6 foot) between two interior rooms, why we have no idea! We had several contractors come and look at it, and they were hesitant about removing the window. We called Chris Nemec to give us an estimate on the window removal and to install heavy duty overhead shelving in the garage. He did not see an issue with the window removal and had several helpful suggestions on the garage shelves. Not only did they remove the window with no problems and no mess, but they built an arched doorway between the two rooms making the transition open and natural looking. They blended the wall texture to match the rooms and it looks like it was always like this. The garage shelving is braced to handle anything we could ever want to store on them. We are very happy with the quality of work that was performed on this job, and will use them again.
Description of Work: Remove window and install arch that matches dimensions of existing arch in room. Drywall and texture wall to match existing walls. Build overhead shelves in garage to store large heavy items. Tile floor piece under window removal that blends with tile floor
We can't say enough good things about Chris Nemec and his crew. They were exceptional: prompt, courteous, meticulous, and very conscientious about their work. Chris really cares about the quality of the work being done, and it is very apparent that he has carefully selected a crew that has the same attitude. We were impressed by the way they ensured that the wooden floors on the first floor were covered so that dirt wasn't tracked in from outside and not a speck of paint went onto the floors. They also put up plastic liners to cover all the cabinets, appliances, counters, and even the sink. They were very clean and cleared away the work areas every day. When it comes to tile work, you really want someone who is a perfectionist and is committed to ensuring that the patterns are aligned, the corners are cut to exacting standards, and that the grout is applied properly. Chris and his senior crew member, Paul, were fantastic. The same attention to detail that Chris and his crew put into remodeling our kitchen, they put into finishing our basement room. The crown molding, the design of the closet so that it gives us storage space, but also hides the water heater, the way they hid the center pole and the A/C ducts, the careful way they matched the paint, and the actual wall painting - everything, each step, was planned and performed in an outstanding manner. However, one of Chris Nemec's best qualities is that he not only answers questions, he really does get back to you as soon as possible! Chris always called us back whenever we had to leave a message on his cell phone. He had several jobs going on at the same time, but we always felt like he had time for us. He never kept us guessing as to what was going on, providing updates on the work, letting us know about each stage of the process before hand, and always letting us know what workers/inspectors would be coming to the house, so that we wouldn't be surprised by strangers. He also kept us advised of changes in the schedule caused by weather or small delays in getting certain supplies. And even though we had to go out of town for several days, he was still able to finish the job on time. Outstanding service from start to finish. We highly recommend Chris Nemec Construction.
Description of Work: We received several different estimates from different companies, including recommendations from our realtor and two companies from Angie's list. We decided to use Nemec Construction based on Chris Nemec's Q & A session at our home. He seemed very interested in the project, but also asked more specific questions and made several suggestions that the other contractors didn't mention. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He also seemed to believe that a person's reputation was very important. We wanted (1) glass tile on the kitchen walls removed and replaced with stone tile, (2) small crack repaired in study wall, with wall being restored (including putting on "knock down" and finding matching paint) and (3) finishing a large basement storage room, so that it could be used as a second family/gaming room & exercise room. This included building a closet for the water heater, framing, putting several different storage areas on different electrical switches, putting up drywall, covering the walls with knock down so the room would match the rest of the house, painting, putting up crown molding, making a ceiling that included boxing in large A/C ducts, putting in new lighting, floor tile, and new doors. Essentially everything that you can think of to make a bare, cement block space into a lovely new room that looks like it was part of the original house. Chris had all the estimates broken down including the costs of city/county inspections, and he made the arrangements for the inspections after coordinating with our time schedule.

We hired Chris Nemec after meeting with a few other contractors. The home we purchased needed remodeling/repairs, and was an older one which had some major issues. Chris was very thoughtful in figuring out what exactly caused the issues (i.e faulty framing, etc.) . The repairs were tricky, and Chris spent time studying all major problems before offering solutions. He and his crew/subcontractors were competent, talented, polite, trust-worthy, perfectionists, and all did an excellent job. They showed up when they said they would, and were very considerate of our living situation (elderly parent and multiple pets). I know contractors often enter into jobs not knowing completely what the issues may be. Chris dealt well with adaptively managing the repairs. When Chris had completed the agreed-upon remodeling/repairs, we asked him to do additional work. We couldn't ask for a more competent and talented contractor, and plan to use him and his crew for future remodeling we have planned.

Chris Nemec initially impressed me with his eye for detail during our initial consultation. In spite of having several competing projects, he worked in our high priority projects because of the potential water damage that delayed repair could cause to our home. Chris and his team performed the majority of their work during the week, while I was away at work. As the work progressed, Chris would call with status updates. Each member of the team that I had the pleasure of meeting was gracious to me and respectful of our home. The work looks great, and is exactly what we wanted. One of our neighbors was so impressed with the quality of their work and their professionalism that they immediately hired Chris' team to for roof repair on their home.
Description of Work: In addition to replacing the roof and gutters, Chris and his team helped us rehabilitate a poorly constructed addition to our new home that was done by the previous owners. This included: - Repairing brick siding - Installing cap flashing on brick cap - Removing and replacing damaged soffits - Removing and replacing damaged facia - Installing an opening and door to a sealed crawl space - Cleaning out the crawl space, spraying it for termites, and installing plastic and Insulation - Building a small retaining wall - Removing drywall in house, repairing damage, re-insulating and replacing drywall - Repairing damaged subfloor under carpet - Pouring a new, small cement porch, - Repairing framing around front door - Paint touch ups
Excellent. Chris and his workmen were prompt, efficient, kept in touch. Chris's attention to detail is quite good, price came in as estimated. We would recommend Nemec Construction to our friends, as their workmanship was above par.
Description of Work: Nemec Construction restored basement after damage to original quality, which included insulation, drywall, kickboards, painting, shelving, etc. Quality of work far exceeded our expectation.

I used him about 6 months ago. In order for him to install the ladders, he had to cut a hole in the ceiling. The workers were competent. The price he charged included the price of the ladders. They didn't tidy up the attic. They tidied up the down stairs, but left a mess in the attic. The job was good, but I'm not totally happy with the clean up. I would use them again, and made sure they cleaned up.
Description of Work: I used Nemec Construction, and he installed ladders in the attic for me.
They are currently working for me,and I'm very happy with their work. I'm very impressed with their quality of work and their professionalism.

This job went great. Chris spent a lot of time figuring out how to rescue the stairs, which had been badly built originally. His solution was very effective and he and his team worked quickly. He did some extra cleanup of debris left in the yard, and his solution for the side yard light was very efficient and effective
Description of Work: Chris rebuilt stairs going from the first floor to the basement, and replaced 3 large windows in the basement dating back to the early 60s. He also installed a motion-sensor controlled light for our side yard.
We just purchased a home that had a few known issues from the inspectors report. Top of the list was a negative drainage issue that was causing water to seep into the garage. I found Nemec Construction on Angie's list and called them for a quote because I liked what I read in the reviews. After meeting with Chris and walking through the inspectors report, it was clear that he is very knowledgeable and has an eye for detail. He explained options and provided suggestions and solutions. His crew was very professional -- they were on time, kept their work area tidy and cleaned up after themselves when they were done. Work was completed when promised and Chris was always responsive to my questions and last minute additions to the list. The deck was demolished and removed and the back yard was regraded and drainage installed in addition to the foundation of the house being properly water proofed. Our Bug Guy has since told us that the crawl space is the driest he's ever seen it in the 7years he's serviced the house. We haven't seen any water seepage at all in the garage. Problem solved! The old platform/stairs in the garage were torn out and hauled off and a new walkway was built that is much safer and easier to move around on. Chris took the time to "shop" for door locks/hardware for me --- sending pictures of different options to make sure we were happy with what was being installed. Dimmer switches were installed and the strange lighting configuration that originally existed was resolved. While correcting the siding issues noted on the inspectors report, Chris identified a few additional minor problems that he fixed as well. We are very happy with the quality of work performed by Nemec Construction and plan on using them again in the future to tackle other items on our home improvement "wish list".

Chris and a helper measured and started setting posts in early December, and by mid-December, Chris was building fence sections and installing them. He pre-stained the wood to match the finish of wood on the existing deck and pergola. They cleaned up at the end of each day, so there was no mess. The project was finished the week before Christmas. Chris really is a craftsman with a fine work ethic and the quality of his work shows in the finished product.
Description of Work: Chris built a beautiful wood fence to enclose my front and side yards as well as the back deck and carport area. My main objective was to put up a fence that was in keeping with the Craftsman style of the home and to mirror the style of the front porch railing. In addition, I wanted to be able to open any door in the house and let the dog out into an area enclosed by fence. Because of an unusual situation involving a shared driveway, I originally planned to put a gate across the driveway near my carport and enclose all of the backyard, but after mulling the layout, decided instead to enclose the deck and carport area and skip the gate idea. Chris was very flexible with my change request. I asked Chris to build the fence about 5 feet inside the property line so that I can landscape on the outside of the fence in the spring. (My dog likes to eat shrubs and flowers, so I figured this will give the new landscape a fighting chance.) Chris pre-stained the wood before the building the sections, so that it looked perfectly finished when the last section went in. I asked that the posts be capped with copper, which Chris was able to do. I have had many neighbors compliment me on the look of the fence. I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. As a side note, shortly before the fence was finished, I had an accident and wasgoing to be unable to take the dog for walks for about six weeks, so when the final sections of the fence went in about a week after my accident, the dog had free rein of the yard and I don't think has missed going for walks since! Perfect timing. The fence was not inexpensive, but I did get several quotes, and for the type of fence I wanted, Chris's quote was competitive, and the quality of work was excellent.

Overall working with Chris and his crew was a great experience. They were friendly and knowledgeable. They took their time and cleaned up each night before leaving which I really appreciated. Chris included me in decision making throughout, which I also appreciated, as I liked being included in the project. I would highly recommend Nemec construction. I am already talking with Chris about helping me with some upcoming projects, that should tell you all you need to know about what I think of them.
Description of Work: I had a hard time finding a local contractor to work on my garage project. Sometimes they would not call me back after they came out for an estimate, or sometimes they just wouldn't return my calls. Then I found Nemec Construction. Chris Nemec came out to home timely and gave me an accurate estimate within a few days. He listened to what I wanted and made it happen within my budget. Chris and his crew turned a basement room in my home, formally a garage, back into a two car garage for me. They demolished the half brick and half siding wall then framed in the opening for the garage door subcontractor to install the door and opener. Chris's estimates included subcontractors fees which was awesome. I didn't have to worry about paying them and he inspected their work. I am pretty handy guy, I enjoy working on my house, and I was really pleased with their attention detail. They left their jobsite clean and professional. They removed all the demolition debris. It was a very turnkey job, just what I wanted. During the project Chris did run into a few unexpected issues, but he and his crew just made everything work. It turned out awesome.

I gave Chris a task that would probably make most buiders run in the other direction. Take my great grandmother's much-loved but completely decrepit cabin, the one that has been on our famiy's original 30-acre homestead for over a hundred years and which our ENTIRE extended family has used for vacations since the 1920s, and demolish it. We'll be very sad and sorry to see you do this, and it will cause us a great deal of emotional anquish, and we will want to watch you as you tear it down, but we accept that it has to be done. But, for goodness sake, do it the right way. Save the three gorgeous stone fireplaces (built by the same masons who built the Grove Park Inn). Then build a new, energy efficient cabin in the exact footprint of the old cabin. From the outside, please make it look just like the old cabin--same 1920s high pitched roof style for gables, and same arts and crafts aesthetic for the windows, doors, siding, and so forth. From the inside, however, make it a spacious, infinitely livable space that my family will love for many generations to come. Please be very careful. Our family has treasured this place for six generations, and we love it. Oh, and by the way, you've got to keep the costs as low as possible, but we want to have the highest quality for EVERYTHING. Did I mention that the space is only 865 square feet? And could you please have it ready in three months so we can celebrate my dear father's 90th birthday there? One last thing--I am a reasonably kind, patient and courteous person for the most part, yet I am somewhat of an artist myself. I need to be involved every step of the way and to co-create this house with you. Does this seem like the right job for you? Chris said yes. Mind you, he did not say yes because he was hurting for work in this miserable economy. Chris has never advertised, but his commissions have never stopped flowing in. I knew this fact, so my concern was that he would be too busy to take our job. However, what he said right away was that he loved a challenge and this would certainly give him a good one. He also said that he had a gut instinct we would get along well, and that our partnership would be a creative and fulfilling one for him. So my husband and I took the plunge and with Chris Nemec's excellent talents we built the beautiful, cozy cabin of our dreams. The "red cabin"--as we call it--was not completely finished by my father's birthday. And that was because the demolition of the original cabin was more complicated than we figured it would be. No matter. We still held the birthday party at the site with my extended family, which made everyone happy. Last weekend we moved in, and yesterday we hosted my dear parents and brother here with a joyous Thanksgiving feast in our new house. We feel richly blessed, and this is due, in no small measure, to our wonderful contractor, Chris Nemec.
Description of Work: When we hired Chris Nemec and his talented crew, he knew he was taking on a difficult job. No pressure, Chris, but could you please demolish the much-loved, beautiful cabin that my great grandmother lived in almost a hundred years ago--the one that has been a family vacation spot for six generations? But first could you salvage all the wonderful shutter windows, ladder-back doors and any other architectural pieces that my family cannot bear to throw away? And most important of all, could you please save the three stunningly beautiful stone fireplaces that give this cabin its unique character? Then could you please build a charming new cabin that looks just like the old one from the outside, but will be open, sleek, and modern on the inside? What I discovered was that Chris Nemec is a courageous young man who relishes challenges. He said yes immediately, then over the course of the summer and early fall he proceeded to build an 865 square-foot cabin that far exceeded our high expectations. (Please see attached photos.) To my surprise, Chris's original estimates were pretty darn accurate. I myself decided to make some changes and upgrades along the way, so most of the differences between the original budget and the final budget were due to my choices. The one area where Chris was off a bit in the budget projection was the cost of demolition and grading. This was not his fault. The original chimneys were more difficult to save then we thought, but I authorized Chris to spend what we needed to keep these special works-of-art intact. Due to his skillful engineering and building talents, he not only saved the three fireplaces, he repaired decades-old damage to the bases of the chimneys, integrating new/distressed stone with the old stone in such a way that the chimneys are in better shape now than they probably have been in almost a century. There are many things about the new cabin that we love. Most of them came into being because of Chris's artistry and good taste: the customized, concrete countertops in the kitchen (made by Chris), the built-in shelves above the washer and dryer (made by Chris), the suggestion to use acacia wood for the floors (Chris's idea); the window designs (Chris), the idea of having the entry wall in the bath be cathedral ceiling height (Chris). You get the idea. This young man is way more than a builder. He is an artist and craftsman. Chris is modern in his skills and tastes, and yet he is "old school" in his character, which was a delight to discover. What do I mean by old school? Chris Nemec is completely honest. I mean it. His work ethic is as strong, tough, and disciplined as it gets. He is true to his word. He takes pride in his work and seems incapable of producing anything that is not of high quality. He values the relationship, and he treats people right. He certainly always treated me well as his customer, but he is a person who also treats his work partner and crew extremely well. It is no wonder that he has had the same great professionals working with him for many years. Truth be known--this young man is a gem. How were we lucky enough to find him? His talents and skills were the perfect fit for our needs. When I think of his gifts as a designer/builder and master carpenter, the words that best describe how I feel are gratitude, respect, and admiration. At some point--if we have more money, fingers crossed--we are going to build more structures on our family homestead. Of course the first person we willI turn to will be Chris Nemec.

Chris showed up on time for the estimate, was very professional and courteous. We live out of town, so it was important to find someone we could trust - Chris definitely fit the bill! We trusted him from the start. He worked with us discussing the materials to be used, pricing and how it would fit with the house. When it was going to cost more than the estimate, he was up front. When it was going to cost less, he disclosed that as well. He maintained contact regularly, letting us know how the progress was going. When there was a problem or a question (such as the insulation) he was on the phone asking. He had the whole project done quickly, and cleaned up everything when he left. In terms of price, I believe he was very reasonable for the quality and professionalism he brings. I will definitely hire Chris and Nemec Construction for our next project.
Description of Work: We had six windows installed, drywall replaced, carpet removed and bamboo flooring installed, and a laundry room moved. The windows were new installs, so they had to remove drywall in the room, install headers, and while he was in there, he also increased our insulation R-factor considerably. The drywall was then replaced. They installed bamboo flooring in two rooms and a hallway after removing old carpets. Finally, they moved our laundry room downstairs, which included cutting into the concrete pad and installing a drain, as well as running the water lines and the dryer exhaust.. They tiled the floor in that room.

This job represented a number of challenges because the structure above the workshop was an open screened porch and it was necessary to waterporoof the ceiling below. A second challenge was building additional supports below the deck to support the additional weight. A third challenge was to extend the front and sides of the structure without building on the ground since this area was a part of the speptic field. A final challenge was working with me since I had designed the basics of the structure and am a real detail person. Each of these issues was dealt with expertly, with patience and skill. If an approach did not work, a soultion was found. If something was not done to the satisfation of the "boss" he would have it redone. The workers were great and the work ethic was incredible - they worked outside when the weather was below 20 degrees. What was also a great bonus was their willingness to let me work with them where I had the skills and make changes in my original design where necessary. My only complaint was the mess left by a drywall contractor in an adjoining room where a window had been removed and the opening drywalled. Other that that this was the best overall experience I have ever had with a contractor and I would highly recommend him for any job.
Description of Work: Coverted a deck adjoining the house to a workshop, including extending the deck and shingling the extended roof, preparing the foundation and supports, enclosing, insulating, installing windows, removing existing structure and window and painting the interior. Most importantly, successfully waterproofing the roof of the structure, given that there was an open deck above. The contractor had to coordinate with the engineer, and subs very carefully since this was a difficult challenge given the nature of the existing structure and the tight spaces that needed to be worked in. It should also be mentioned that we always passed the inspections without problems.

I solicited proposals from 4-5 area and regional roofers. Nemec was one of two general contractors who provided quotes. Chris Nemec was very helpful in determining the best roofing materials (we considered metal also), and even helped us with some aesthetic advice during shingle/trim selection. Our job was complicated by much rotted plywood decking around chimney and under a large defunct/leaking active-solar heating device. The tear-off included removal of 2-layers of existing roof and the solar collector device. Other complications included unexpected severe storms. Nemec and his crew were VERY careful to protect our home during the process, and always ensured that roof was water-tight during the storms, and called me to let me know that the house was secured, and update me as to the progress. Nemec was not the lowest or the highest price, however was very competitive with the other bids considered. The quality, craftsmanship and care taken, including a very thorough post-job clean-up were impressive. Using a general contractor for this work gave us an added level of confidence that any structural issues would be addressed carefully and thoroughly was a big plus. I definitely recommend Nemec for any job.
Description of Work: Replacement of asphalt shingle roof, including tear-off of 2-existing layers, construction of cricket/diverter above rock chimney, and repair of much rotted plywood decking. Also included installation of drip-edge, gable-end facia-board aluminum covering, as well as ridge and smart-vent installation.
