I sent an email requesting an estimate about 3 weeks ago and never received any response. This is an unacceptable business practice.. I know the construction and remodeling businesses in Asheville are very busy, but this is no excuse for ignoring future customers.

We were very pleased with the work that was completed and the craftsmanship that was put into the project. The team was professional, timely and courteous. Overall the entire construction period took about 4 weeks, which is what we were told to expect. The only surprise was coming in 25% over the initial budget, but we had elected some finish choices that were not originally part of the initial quote so we were anticipating the end number being higher.
Description of Work: Conversion of storage space into a finished office. The job required electrical work, installation of a mini split ac/heating unit, installation of flooring, installation of a solar tube, a custom bookcase, creation of a closet, drywall, trim and painting.

I contacted Chris via Angies list and immediately had contact within 24 hours. Chris came to the house and measured everything and was able to give an estimate within 72 hours. I do have to say Chris's estimate was par with what we were expecting. He was more than willing to accommodate our needs and changes along the way. I do have to say Chris does listen. He knew our budget and made sure we were communicated with about going over or of ways he thought we could save money. Chris's brother, Steve was the lead project manager of our expansion. He did a great job communicating to me and my wife. They showed up on time everyday and made sure to communicate to me of when they would not be there as to not get in the way of others who need to work (i.e. dry waller, electrician, floor company). To comment on their dedication, Chris and Steve contracted a new flooring business to do our floor instillation. The floor went in great but the first staining was not up to par with matching appropriately as we had discussed early in the design phase. The flooring company was not impressed as well, and the owner came out and redid the floors and they are so much closer to the color of our older floors. So if you want something done right, contact Nemec Construction. They will not let you down.
Description of Work: Expansion of kitchen by tearing down existing wall. Replaced old existing exterior window with a better insulated one (did not have to destroy stucco on exterior). Extended hardwood floors that matched current age of older floor. Closed off existing door to old room. Added kitchen nook bench and wainscoting surrounding the wall of the new area. Added recessed lighting and moved several light switches and electrical outlets. Removal of hot tube electrical outlet, and wall radio electoral unit.

What we liked about Chris from the start was that he listened to what we wanted. After our initial conversation and inspection of the work area, Chris provided a drawing of the porch he planned to build. When we wanted to do something differently, he listened and was accommodating. Chris responded to our e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner and listened to and addressed our concerns. Chris and his team have a great deal of experience. They were friendly and worked well together. They showed up on time, worked hard, and seemed to enjoy their work.
Description of Work: We hired Chris to build a screen porch and replace the shingles on our roof. We extended the job to include replacing the siding on the back of the house and a few other things. Below is a list of the services he provided: 1. Removed existing patio and slab. 2. Poured a new concrete slab and built a 14 foot by 25 foot screen porch with outdoor lights, overhead fan, and two skylights. The porch roof tied into the existing roof on our ranch house. 3. Replaced a damaged exterior door with glass french doors leading to the porch. 4. Preserved existing dog door and installed a screen door that included a dog door. 5. Replaced several windows. 6. Removed a 6 foot counter in the kitchen and located and patched the parquet flooring in the exposed area. 7. Removed the existing siding and trim on the back of the house and replaced with Certainteed cement siding and Myratech trim. 8. Installed lights on the screen porch; ceiling fans on the porch, in the kitchen and in two bathrooms; overhead lights in the basement; and electrical outlets in several locations. (work performed by subcontractor) 9. Replaced stucco on chimney and to added stucco on several walls. (work performed by subcontractor) 10. Painted the stucco on the chimney and the siding on the back of the house. Stained the screen porch. (work performed by subcontractor) 11. Installed seamless gutters on the back of the house including the screen porch. (work performed by subcontractor) 12. Removed existing shingles on the roof and replaced with new shingles. (work performed by subcontractor) 13. Worked with city to obtain permits and pass the necessary inspections to complete the project.

At initial contact I was told that the start date was indeterminate depending on scheduling and jobs were completed in order of received. While there was a delay on starting I was kept informed and it did proceed in an orderly and professional manner. A large crew showed up the first day or two to remove all the old siding and old deck over enclosure. The property was left neat and clean after each day and debris removed promptly and nothing left cluttered. After demo the crew was smaller but always showed up, worked diligently and professionally. We are extremely happy with the the professional quality of the work. The job came in close to budget, there were small items that occurred and were changed but nothing extraordinary and no real surprises from what was expected. While there were contractors that offered lower estimates I wanted someone that had the capability of doing the entire job and had the staff and expertise to do the high level of quality I wanted done. Chris and His staff did a excellent job were always professional and answered any questions and included me in decisions . I would definitely use their services again and can recommend them without hesitation

I've purposely waited for six months to write this review as I wanted the opportunity to use my new kitchen and assess its form and function. I can say without hesitation that Nemec Construction has done exceptional work and delivered the kitchen of my dreams. Tamara Stillwell designed a space that is beautiful, functional and has exceptional storage. She guided us into selecting cabinets, hardware and granite of exceptional quality. It is a true pleasure to cook in this beautiful new space.Working with Tamara was a joy. She was always accessible to answer our questions and to manage whatever challenges came up during construction. She is a great asset to Nemec Construction. Chris Nemec and his crew were able to transform our vision for a light-filled space into a reality. We love the way the new east windows in the dining room brings natural light into the entire downstairs. Moving access to the laundry room to the hallway not only created more space in the kitchen layout, it also has made the laundry room more functional.I want to compliment the entire Nemec Construction crew, especially Steve Nemec for their professionalism and responsiveness throughout the renovation process. We have great confidence in the quality of their work.We knew that it would be a challenge living with three months of construction. We appreciate that the Nemec crew and subcontractors worked so efficiently and made sure that materials were organized and the work space cleaned at the end of each day. I would definitely use Nemec Construction for future renovation projects in my home. I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Nemec renovated our very dated 1980's kitchen, dining room and powder room. The kitchen received a total make-over with new cabinets, granite countertops, lighting and appliances. The kitchen was opened into the dining room and two windows were installed on the east wall. Laundry room access was moved into the hallway. The downstairs half bath was renovated with new vanity, lighting and paint. Popcorn ceilings were removed throughout the downstairs and all walls were freshly painted. The results exceed expectations and we are delighted with what is basically a new home.

[Member name removed], You did have me estimate that bath job, but chose another contractor. So, I did not do your job. You later called me about a fireplace repair and I gave you a number of someone who could help. I never sub-contracted or worked on your house. This could explain why you never saw me. I never completely sub out jobs. We only sub out electrical, plumbing, sheetrock and HVAC. The rest is taken car of by my company. Thanks anyway for the good grades!

We were very pleased with the responsiveness of Nemec construction. The pergola was part of a backyard landscaping project. It went beautifully. I felt like I could leave the house and trust them while they were here. I have never done that in the past with other service providers. They watched the house and made sure it was locked when they left. They cleaned up after themselves and did an outstanding job. They even watched over my father if I ever needed them to.

The work and communication were excellent. Chris challenged us with some additional design ideas that really improved the outcome, like suggesting that we relocate the added windows for the bedrooms to better capture the views. We especially appreciated that he was willing to work with us on a time and materials basis, and that we had input on some of the subcontractors that were selected where we had a preference. We will definitely be calling Chris and his crew for our next major project!
Description of Work: Chris and his crew refinished an existing basement into a full walkout basement. This included the addition of three bedrooms, and two full bathrooms, and converting the existing sub grade basement into a walkout. He also redid the front entrance deck to meet the new grade.

We actually had to have them come back in and do some repairs, so it didn't go as well as we had hoped. Everything did get fixed, but we feel the quality of work was less than professional, and they left everything for us to clean up. We had to haul away all of their trash. The tile work was a mess, and the detail was sloppy, and some of the old caulking was left around the bathtub. They told us to just get some caulk and grout remover and take it off ourselves.

I am sorry to see this not so good report from the (removed member name). I am also a bit shocked. The bath job was done on a very tight budget (2500). We did not have any room to do any extras, but we still did a few for them, including insulating the wall on the exterior of the bath. I tried my best to help with the costs. Here is an email in which I offered to give the (removed member name) some tile that I had at my house to help them with the budget. It wasn't much, but I thought every bit counted: 09/05/14 I have 12- 8x8 white tiles. They say Ragione White on the back. skew # 8532800066. You would need 156 of them for your shower. and about 15' of bullnose, unless we use the metal strip at the edges and you will need bullnose around window. I figured you would run tile to the ceiling? -We did not remove the old caulk on the tub rim, because it was not in our estimate to clean the existing tub. Even though it was not in the budget, I still offered to come back and remove it for them in this email: 09/25/14 (removed member name), I went by there and looked at tub. A product called Goof Off will take that old caulk off. I have some and will try to swing by there and try it. The total for the job was $2510.00. The original estimated price. I had some extras, but I will stick to my price. We enjoyed working with you. -I assumed (removed member name) did not want me to bother with it when she sent me this reply that also praised our work: 09/25/14 Thanks Chris, we'll try the Goo Gone.. Would you rather for us to mail you a check for the amount? We are very pleased with the work done. (removed member name) -Although we stuck to our budget with some extras, payment was not received in a timely manner. Regardless I still let the Creasman's make two payments spread out. This is not something that I will do again. See the following email: 10/03/14 Due to some unexpected bills and a cut in hours over the last month at work I would like to see if I can make a partial payment of $1800 on Monday and the remainder on Friday of next week. Just let me know where I can meet you at. Thanks 10/03/14 I have to make payroll and pay for materials. Although it is inconvenient and rather unconventional I guess it is OK. I don't want it to drag on though. Chris On January 18th I received a picture of some flex cracks in the grout lines and at the cast Iron tub. These were due to the deflection of the floor joists in this older home and movement in the metal on the cast iron tub. On January 20th I replied: "I will get Steven to come by this evening, there probably needs to be caulk around the tub, because it is expanding and contracting. The area in the center may be the floor joists flexing. We fixed the bad plywood, but hopefully the joists are not over spanned." -(removed member name) said thank you and we scheduled to be there at 5 that evening. Unfortunately we got held up at another job and scheduled to come the next day at 5:00 which (removed member name) said was better anyway. Then the (removed member name) rescheduled at about 3:30 the next day for us to come over the following evening. After waiting until well after 5:00 on January the 22nd, someone came to let Steven, my employee, come in and address the issues. Steven repaired the caulk and we suggested that, since the tub is cast Iron and the metal tends to expand and contract a lot, especially in the winter, they should put some grout caulk at the base. That was the only time we had to come back to fix anything. Furthermore, I was recommended by the (removed member name) to their neighbor for which I did an estimate for. As far as trash goes, I personally came to the (removed member name) house and cleaned up all our tools and trash after we finished the job. I loaded it myself into my trailer. If there were things left behind, I had no idea, because no one told me and I could not find any other trash. Getting a mediocre review like this would be perfectly acceptable to me if we had: -not stayed on budget -not started the jobs and finished it in a timely manner -not addressed issues presented to us -had issues that were a result bad installation, not of conditions in the house -not been communicative -not been honest and fair -not done the best we could to work with the customers finances and schedule As you can see, none of these things happened at this job. The review was done eight months after the job was completed, so maybe some of these facts were forgotten. That being said, I apologize to the (removed member name) for any problems that we cause or inconveniences. I will take the criticisms into account on future jobs.

This was without question the best experience I have ever had with a contractor. From beginning to end, Chris was professional, punctual, fair, diligent and cost-effective. When something didn't go as planned (paint color didn't look the same on the wall as it did on the can) he fixed it immediately and didn't pass on the cost to me like other contractors might have done. Most importantly his workmanship was impeccable - he and his team transformed my dingy basement into a beautiful home office where I am now happily sitting by the fire writing this review. Chris is also just a really nice guy and super easy to work with. If you are looking for high quality work, delivered on time, and at a reasonable price, I would highly recommend Nemec Construction.

Rather than waterproof the entire mountain side of the home from the foundation up to grade, they dug below grade to where the waterproofing stopped. When they built my house, they guessed wrong as to where the grade would be and never went back to fix it. Once the exterior wall was exposed, the highest quality water proofing solution (a rubber-like spray) was applied to a level well above grade, dirt was added to great a slope for water to flow away from the house. The guys did an excellent job. So far, so good!
Description of Work: Chris Nemec was so busy that he could not accommodate my need at the moment, which was to attend to a water intrusion problem in my basement. However, he was extremely generous with his professional opinion and resources. This was a job for which I had received a bid of $26,000 for the repair, so I was wary when Chris suggested that it bee handled much more simply and inexpensively. I talked to at least 5 experts, but Chris had a measured approach which not only worked, but it saved me $25,000. When he couldn't do the job himself and rain was on the way, he referred me to someone who could.

Our finished basement flooded after gutters backed up and overflowed. We had to tear out the basement floors and bottom 3 feet of drywall in preparation for installation of an interior french drain system. We were on a tight time schedule for this part of the job because we needed to get it done before the french drain system could be installed. Despite the fact that Chris' had a huge job going on at another home nearby, he managed to fit in this small job and get it done on time. Afterwards we decided to have him perform the drywall repair and install the new tile shower and floor in the basement bathroom. Again we were a small job and he managed to fit us in among other jobs he had going on in the area. It certainly helped that I work from home, so his team could come and go pretty much as they had time. But they got the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Next year we plan on doing a kitchen update and NEMEC Construction will be one of the first companies we contact.

GREAT FROM THE GET GO. I HIRED NEMEC CONSTRUCTION TO EVALUATE THE POSSIBLE REMODEL OF A HOME WE WERE CONSIDERING FOR PURCHASE. CHRIS ANSWERED THE FIRST PHONE CALL, AND I WAS ABLE TO GET AN APPOINTMENT WITHIN A FEW DAYS. BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING TO ASHEVILLE FROM ATLANTA FOR THIS CONSULTATION, RELIABILITY AND PUNCTUALITY WERE IMPORTANT. CHRIS WAS A GOOD COMMUNICATOR AND ON TIME FOR THE MEETING AT THE HOUSE SITE. I HAD SOME SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT WE WANTED TO ACHIEVE IN THE REMODEL. HE CONSIDERED THEM, ADDED HIS OWN IDEAS, AND GAVE REALISTIC SUGGESTIONS WHERE AN ALTERNATIVE WOULD BE BETTER. HERE IS ONE EXAMPLE OF THE WAY HE RAN THE EVALUATION: IN ONE SCENARIO, THE WATER HEATER AND LAUNDRY WERE TO BE RELOCATED. HE TRACED THE PATH OF THE WATER PIPES, AND DISCOVERED THEY RAN UNDER THE CRAWL SPACE. HE LOCATED THE CRAWL SPACE ENTRANCE, AND INVESTIGATED. EASY TO RELOCATE THE PIPES, BUT OH BY THE WAY, THERE WAS ZERO INSULATION UNDER THE ENTIRE HOUSE. HIS CURIOSITY LED HIM TO THE ATTIC, WHERE HE DISCOVERED ONLY THE ORIGINAL AND VERY MARGINAL INSULATION EXISTED. HIS COMMENT WAS "I CAN GUARANTEE YOU WILL HAVE HIGH UTILITY BILLS IN THIS HOUSE UNLESS YOU UPGRADE THE INSULATION." IN THE END, THE COSTS TO UPGRADE THE HOUSE TO PRESENT TENSE WAS WAY MORE THAN ANTICIPATED, AND THE FUN REMODEL WE HAD ENVISIONED WAS JUST MORE MONEY ON TOP OF THAT. WE ABANDONED THE PROJECT. CHRIS CHARGED A FEE FOR THE CONSULTATION, AND WOULD HAVE APPLIED IT TO MY ACCOUNT IF WE HAD HIRED HIM FOR THE CONSTRUCTION. TOTALLY FAIR. I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HIS REPUTATION FROM READING OTHER ANGIE'S LIST REVIEWS, AND HE LIVED UP TO IT. HE TAKES HIS WORK SERIOUSLY, AND WAS KNOWLEDGEABLE AND THOROUGH. HE COMMUNICATED THROUGH PHONE CALLS, TEXTS, AND EMAILS. I FELT THAT I WAS AN IMPORTANT CUSTOMER. I WOULD HIRE NEMEC CONSTRUCTION IN THE FUTURE.

Nemec came out to the job site and we developed a scope of work. Later he gave me an estimate that was somewhat incomplete as to all the work that needed to be done. In response to this I sent him a detailed scope in outline form because he said he was having a hard time"getting his head around the work". I have not heard from him since except for one call that his schedule had unexpectedly filled up and he would be unable to do the work within the time frame I needed (3 months). I went from one point when I was told I was on the schedule and we just needed to firm up the details to being told he couldn't get his head around the work and was no scheduled after all. How can this company do whole houses?

[member name removed], Sorry to have caused you trouble. I did come up with an initial estimate that was detailed and very long. It contained all the numbers you initially asked for. I spent a lot of time with you (2.5 hours on the site and 3 hours on the estimate) and did get you that estimate. After giving that initial estimate, I was not contacted until some time later when you had already had some of the work done. Since I was never contacted about whether or not you wanted the work done by my company, I could not put you on the schedule. We cannot schedule work without a contract of some sort. By the time you did get back to me, my schedule was filled for the time period you wanted the work done. Since the scope of work was so large and seemed to change so much from my original estimate, I told you I would be more comfortable with a time and materials budget. I am very successful at building houses and have a very long list of happy customers that I have done both remodels and new construction for. This list is bigger off Angies list than what is on it. I think the problem here was a mix of bad communication, too many unknowns and too many hands in the job. Once again, I am sorry that you feel that I wasted your time, but most of the time was on me. I hope your Foreclosure remodel goes well. Chris

The contractor I chose guaranteed I would move in by March 1st, Nemec couldn't guarantee this so I went with the other guy, biggest mistake of my life! I eventually moved in 19 days late and 250,000 poorer! The lesson here is never go with a General Contractor who is available, if they ain't busy, there a very good reason for that.
Description of Work: I asked Nemec to bid on a full remodel, they were excellent and the only reason I didn't hire them was because they were too busy, I ended up hiring a contractor who ripped me off.

I am truly sorry that this happened to you. You seemed like a good person to work for. I can't imagine why someone would do that. If you need anything in the future, pleas don't hesitate to call me. Chris

He said I could call him if the first estimates did not work out. I left him a final message stating that my basement renovation project was cancelled because there was so much more work necessary to make it a legal apartment.
Description of Work: He returned my call promptly, answered questions about my basement renovation project, and was kind.

After having Chris do a couple of smaller jobs for us, we needed to make a significant addition to our home. He helped us visualize what we wanted, gave us drawings, reworked them, and then oversaw all the work from pouring the slab to framing, roofing, plumbing, wiring, tiling and painting. Dealt with unexpected obstacles creatively (like having to jack hammer up the existing cement floor of the bathroom when he found the plumbing wouldn't pass inspection). He responded to requests for changes realistically and with humor. He held his subs to a very high standard of work and neatness. His crews were basically in our lives for several months and were always respectful and appropriate. We are so very pleased with the results. Our friends are jealous.
Description of Work: Added a bedroom to our house, redid the bathroom, upgraded the existing family room, partitioned an office out of the space

I really, really liked working with this company. They were extremely skilled, courteous, and professional. They cleaned up carefully each day. The workmanship was excellent and very well priced. The new roof alone was impressive. They were also very collaborative and responsive to any requests. Overall, the whole company was just a joy to work with. Even the electrical and plumbing subcontractors were stellar.
Description of Work: They were hired to expand our deck and to put a roof on that tied into the permanent home roof. They made it into a screen porch. They also did preliminary kitchen work. They moved a sink, stove, and window in our kitchen. They also did some plumbing and electrical work to accommodate the new sink and stove locations.
