Mike was simply dishonest about the price and that’s putting it nicely. I wish we had paid attention to the negative Angie’s list reviews because we would have never hired Target Building Solutions. I gave Mike a picture of exactly what I wanted, and he gave me a quote that sounded reasonable. I asked several times throughout the project if we were still on target and I was told we were. Even when the project was done and I asked again, I was told there were some increases here and there for reasonable things but nothing astronomical, then he hit me with a bill which was significantly more than we had agreed upon. When I argued, he said the original figure was just an estimate that didn’t include his overhead and profit. What kind of dirty contractor knowingly gives a quote hiding 15-20% right off the bat? This was a blatant lie to try and justify charging more than we agreed to. The receipts he provided for the subcontractors (electrical, construction, HVAC) and materials were all reasonable, within budget, and they did a great job. I also added a couple things on my own that fell under the subcontractor’s work, and that price was reasonable too. What’s left was Mike’s unskilled general labor crew, his supervision, and overhead. That amounted to digging out dirt and pouring a concrete slab but accounted for almost ½ of the total bill!!! There were several errors made during his “supervision” of this crew that needed to be corrected. Mike also showed up to work reeking of alcohol and at least twice during his “supervision”, we saw him sleeping in his truck. At the time, I wasn’t worried because we had agreed on a figure and how he got there was his business. I never imagined he would pass off the cost of his mistakes and poor supervision to me. Any costs he incurred because he “didn’t know about it” was passed directly to me. Additionally, I learned at the end that his workers couldn’t drive so the cost of Mike transporting them each day was passed onto me. The job is still incomplete. There is spattered concrete all over my siding and the deck is still not painted, but I’m stuck finding someone competent to finish the job. Mike said paint wasn’t part of the deal even though I specified I wanted exactly what was in the picture I provided him. I’m not a contractor, but I would imagine it doesn’t get any easier to quote and build a project when given a photo by the client and told “build this”. We had another larger, and much more expensive project we would have used Target Building Solutions for next, so I guess I’m glad for this experience. We were definitely taken advantage of and ripped off by this company, but hopefully this review will keep someone else from making our mistake.

Response from Target Building Solutions LLC
The Estimate was approximately $8,500 plus 15% Profit and overhead which was discussed with husband, would equal $$9,800. The changes requested by the client, which I will detail, brought the final bill to $12,998, hardly "significant". The client added several items. These included: Altering the septic tank cover to accommodate a 4' walkway, originally client requested 3' which added additional permitting cost and inspections. The step from the house to hot tub was changed to a landing. The HVAC contractors bill increased because of unforeseen complications with moving the existing HVAC unit. A door was added to replace a window, this involves carpentry work and job materials like the door, hardware, trim...... added a light fixture by the new door and a light switch, and a new GFI plug, all doubled the electricians bill. These were not in this picture mentioned. We applied for all local permits, worked with the County through this horrible Coronavirus obtaining permits. We are licensed by the state of NC, carry 1 million dollars insurance to cover any accidents at the job site, including Workman's Comp. I have been a successful contractor for over 30 years. A new hot tub, deck, move HVAC unit because of noise, cement walkways, new door for access to the area, licensed electricians on site, fully licensed and insured up to $1 Million dollar at $12,998? I think people will be standing in line for this deal. Our company never ask for any money up front, paid all bills, billed the client at the end of the job, with an understanding we would be paid at the time the bill was presented. We had to wait til the next day and drive to the site again to get paid. We totally DISAGREE with this review by his wife, who I rarely saw! Not sure about the alcohol comment except to further disparage our company and me personally?? However, anytime husband, who is a nice man, and I discussed processes for how to proceed it was always, "Let me see what she says", I thought well.....? I truly felt sorry for the guy!

I do not recommend Target Building Solutions for a variety of reasons. We kept a daily journal to document the progress of this project and have a paper trail for every thing mentioned here. 1. There was a series of crews sent to perform various jobs. The skilled crews spent much of their time re-doing and correcting mistakes and blunders made by the unskilled crews. We had to monitor daily work and point out errors and mistakes, because the GC, Mike Wall, was not here to supervise. We were charged for poor and low quality work, and also charged for wasted materials. 2. The job was not completed when promised. We were told that the construction would be completed by Thanksgiving, but it was after Christmas when the final work was done. 3. Different crews poured the concrete pad and the attached apron. The work was poorly done and water comes under the garage doors whenever there is rain. See attached pictures. 4. We spent weeks disputing excessive overcharges for labor and supervision, as well as for materials. Although he made some concessions, it was difficult to get Mike to admit to all of the errors and the overcharges. He finally threatened to post a lien against my property because he did not want to "delve into the details anymore." 5. It was a big mistake to use Target Building Solutions. We spent way too much of our time doing what the GC should have been doing. Had we not pointed out all the mistakes and errors, Mike would have let them stand. If you use this company, get a contract with everything in writing, because a handshake doesn't seem to mean much. Be prepared to be overcharged and to supervise the daily work. Some specific construction errors and disputes: 1. One crew spent an entire day installing siding with the wrong reveal. A skilled crew came on another day and had to tear off all the rows of incorrectly installed boards before reinstalling new boards. This wasted time and materials, and delayed completion of the exterior. 2. Another crew spent an entire day framing an interior room. When a skilled crew subsequently arrived to install OSB, they had to square all the studs and the headers because everything was out of square. They also had to tear out the door header and rebuild before they could install the door. This wasted much time and the skilled crew had to return on another day to finish their part. 3. The roofer could have finished the job in one day, but the flashing that he needed was not here. So, he returned a second day, but Mike did not get the needed flashing. The roofer returned for a third day and finally had the needed flashing. We were charged $785 for the labor and $481 for 6 bundles of shingles, flashing, and nails. ( I provided 22 bundles of shingles) 4. Mike wanted $6600 for labor and supervision and $4371 for profit and overhead. After we disputed these figures, he said that the labor and supervision was actually $8620 and reduced the profit and overhead to $4270. We again disputed these figures and Mike gave a "credit" on the labor and supervision and reduced his profit and overhead 3%. I requested a specific accounting for the excessive labor and supervision charges, and Mike threatened to post a lien against my property. I paid without really knowing what accounted for his labor and supervision. He did not supervise this project and attempted to patch errors, rather than to repair them. In a new garage addition we still get water under the doors when there is rain.
Description of Work: We wanted to build a garage addition to an existing structure.

Response from Target Building Solutions LLC
This review is unwarranted in our opinion! This customer threatened us in advance, if we didn't lower the bill. This was taken from their email, "will be described in detail on social media as well as on Angie's List, If you cannot wait a few days for the check and want to go to court, have at it". This is the tone we have been dealing with for months now. We started the project in September, after reaching an agreed upon estimate of over $36K. We applied for and received all proper permitting, and started the work. We hired all the subs and supplied some of the workers that are on our payroll. We provide a 2 Million dollar umbrella policy to cover all workers and the property owner. We are licensed with the state of NC as a General Contractor, Mike Wall is the owner of the company and the daily contractor on all our job sites. We also provided our Bobcat, and provided transportation for it and the workers. There were several weather related delays, including hurricane Matthew. Our client emailed us daily with his instructions of how he wanted things done, these were long detailed.......................emails . We tried to respond to as many as possible, but were overwhelmed by the sheer volume, as we have other projects going at the same time. We finished the project by Thanksgiving, and removed all our work materials and the Porta Potty. Any remaining work was more punch list, which we finished completely and to industry standards. We started billing them for the final bill the first January following the holidays. At this time the emails increased even more, asking for more details on every itemized charge we had given. We spent 2 plus hours on 2 separate Sunday afternoons trying to respond in lengthy details. None of that worked, only more emails, requesting more details on charges that had already been addressed in detail. After 30 days of not receiving our pay, and more request for more details, we decided that this was their [Member Information Removed] of negotiating the bill down, even though we were $5,000 below the original estimate. So at that time, we emailed them and said we want our payment please! We even tried to appeal to their sense of fairness by saying we are a small company, and a balance of $10K owed more than 30 days after billing is tough. We were very sad that it had come to the point where we had to give a ultimatum to get paid, but at this point we believed wholeheartedly that they were trying to avoid paying us, based on his emails eluding to, amend the bill to a zero balance, and that they were on a limited income, his wife is an artist......................................... The only recourse a builder has legally is to lien the property, we did not see another avenue to get our money. It is our hope that our many A ratings with Angie's list will prove that we are a reputable company, that has provided quality work for 25 plus years. My wife and I run the business, it is our livelihood, we are good tax paying citizens, that appreciates all of our clients. Thank You Mike Wall Jo Ann Beal

Work had to be redone, we provided info for where we bought our original shingles for the roof and then were charged $700 for one days labor for the one roofer he hired from that company. Water comes in garage when it rains at the sides and under the door.

We have refuted this response on several occasions, not sure why it is not shown here. I ask that Angie's List please look into this but have not heard from Angie's List other than to say they are reviewing it. That was more than a year ago. Very Happy that the effort to harm our company was unsuccessful as Angie's List clients contact us every week for help with their projects. Most of our clients are local and we get them via word of mouth. Our company has been in business in Chatham County NC for many years, and we stay busy helping folks, as our great reputation proceeds us!

Our company found this review to be completely false! We are not sure why this person wrote such a review. Our only hope is to refute the review, and hope that all of our A grade reviews, will be considered, against this disputed review. We did look at a bathroom remodel at this address, it was a small bathroom, the customer wanted to completely remove the fixtures, basically gut the bath, replace all the plumbing, replace all the fixtures, light fixtures, mirrors, new dry wall, new tile flooring. The exact fixtures were never chosen, our plumber never looked at the job. The response we got was the estimate was to high. We felt that an estimate of $10,000 was appropriate for this amount of work. We also informed the customer an exact number would require further study and choosing exact products, flooring etc. As far as a smell of alcohol, let the record reflect that we did not have any alcohol involved in this transaction at any time. We spent our time, and traveled there with no cost to the customer, they said they did not have the money.

From beginning to end, Mike Wall and his company saw the entire project through. The building site required clearing of trees and some surface preparation, all of which he took care of. I showed him only a rough design and he converted my ideas into reality. Throughout the process, he made constructive suggestions for changes/modifications/enhancements almost all of which proved to be useful and led to a better final outcome. He did all the sub-contracting from the foundation through the finishing touches. Mike was always ready to get my input into details of how the project was to be done, but, where I didn't have specifics in mind, he went ahead and made decisions for me, all of which turned out to be right. I was particularly impressed with his attention to details of construction that would enhance the esthetics--such as exposed wooden support beams (including two faux-beams on either end of the house for esthetic purposes and the addition of wood trim inside and out, cantilevering of the deck so that the support posts were not visible, etc. He noticed that there were piles of stones lying around from an old stone fence, and he had the idea of using them to cover the exposed concrete blocks of the foundation, which greatly added to the beauty of the cabin. Although the costs ended up being about $20,000 above original estimates, the overruns were almost all related to additions or improvements we agreed on. Throughout the project, Mike was thoroughly "hands-on", spending many hours at the work site and even doing some of the finishing touches himself. He was always available but never intrusive.

My husband and I hired Target Building for a bathroom redo and also a bedroom remodel. They are knowledgeable in every area of construction and remodeling. They installed a new tile shower, tile floors and granite counter. The results exceeded our expectations. In the bedroom, they fixed a sagging ceiling, added crown molding and added trim to plain doors that we could not afford to replace. They also did an expert paint job. We plan to hire them again for other projects in our home. They deliver great quality at an affordable cost.

Mike Wall and his team from Target Building Solutions did a great job from start to finish. They took my mom's vision for her living space and figured out all the things that needed to be done to get there, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, closet space, and kitchen space. He was here daily to supervise both his crew and specialty subcontractors. He was quick and courteous on adjustments that my mother wanted made. His team was professional, courteous and unobtrusive. As with any project like this there were other issues that were discovered but he addressed those without trying to upsell me into another project. The work was first rate across the board and was within the budget. They did a great job, I'm glad that I went with Target Building Solutions.
