Mr. Smith admitted that he had no experience building a screened porch and had relied on his foreman who quit during the construction because of salary issues along with his crew. Mr. Smith believed he could come in and do everything his self which was obvious that he could not do this because he was not qualified, didn't know what needed to be done and how to accomplish it. He tried to hire someone else to do some work but they quickly became frustrated because he couldn't readily pay them for their work, was hard to get in touch with and they were completely disgusted with the work they were coming behind to fix. They called the entire job a complete "cluster-f__k". I had a highly experienced contractor come and review the job that was being done and they told me that most of the work needed to be torn down and re-built by someone more qualified. Do Not Hire this Company. I lost $8700 that I paid up front for a job that was never finished. I also was in contact with someone else that hired this company to do some pressure washing and painting and not only did this company take $3500. in advance from this person but in 3 weeks they had barely spent one day working at his property and caused damage to his outdoor trellis because he believed the workers didn't know how to do the work . I am currently considering litigation but I want to make sure other people are aware of some of my experiences before hiring this company. The owner is Adam Smith and I believe his wife, Ashley is part owner. He also uses Smith Enterprises on his business card and advertises workers on craigslist for the Outer Banks, NC.
Description of Work: Hired to turn an existing porch into a screened porch that I could add windows to in the future. The entire structure after several weeks of work was an inch and a half off square making the entire structure out of balance, none of the wood met, the structure was not attached to the existing home and the pilings were not dug deep enough to allow for windows to be added at a later date according to the building inspector. They purchased too much and used too much lumber then ran out of money towards the end of the job and tried to skim on everything. The roof had no flashing for the next person I hired to attach the soffit and gutter, they purchased the wrong sized screen door that didn't fit in the opening then tried to put a small door in a large hole and nailed boards to fill in the space, the door is crooked because the entire building sways so the lumber doesn't match up, the steps were uneven, I have been trying to use wood filler to fill gaps in the wood, had to use silicone on the roof to try to fill nail holes in the shingles, there are serious gaps everywhere and water leaks on both sides, they put luan on the ceiling because they couldn't afford regular ceiling tile and tried to sneak in indoor paneling on the ceiling which I vetoed, then they left it out in the rain to rot rather than take it back to the store and get the right stuff. They put up the vinyl siding before putting any type of plywood to keep rain from coming in on the sides so it leaks even though we tried to put some foam insulation in ourselves, it needs to be redone. A lot of the nails were incorrect sizes, many areas have nail heads or ends sticking out, they used cheap untreated wood strips for molding then didn't even tack that down correctly, floor boards were cut too small in places where they had to add more flooring and they tried sticking in pieces of wood but didn't nail them down so when checking the structure they came right out leaving a gap in the floor, Drip cap on fascia not straight, I have spent several thousand dollars on my own fixing things to try and get it to pass code with the building inspector for what it is. They don't evaluate roofing or the general contracting quality only specific measurements to pass for a porch. There were so many issues all along and when I tried reaching the owner, Adam Smith, he avoided my calls then tried to tell me they were fixing everything and to be patient, but 6 weeks later, my patience was gone. Mr. Smith admitted he was not experienced building porches or any buildings needing roofing. He tried to convince me that he could do the work even though he was inexperienced but he really is incompetent when it comes to this type of construction and I would not recommend him whatsoever. When it became obvious he could not perform the job, I attempted several times for him to pay me back the 2nd draft of money ($2000.00) I had paid him but he refused. I would have found someone else to do the job right and let him off the hook.
