About us

Suburban Masonry was founded by my father, in 1963. For 40 years he built churches, schools and homes, which provided for our family until he retired. I started working for him during the summers of my school years, and went on to learn the craft and art of masonry. Suburban Masonry is now a company designed to provide affordable masonry services for smaller commercial and residential projects, including both new work and repairs.

We hired Jeff and his team to re-point the foundation wall and buttress in our 100+ year old home and they did a fantastic job. Jeff really cares about the work he does and when we mentioned that we wanted a portion of the wall exposed, he put extra care into the aesthetics of the finished look. He is a true artisan and on a personal level a super friendly and easy going guy. We’re already going to work with him on another project! Highly recommended for masonry work.

After Jeff repaired my foundation, I had difficulty finding someone to do the necessary grading. He returned to improve the drainage around the home. He was communicative, reliable, thorough, and stuck to the very reasonable quote he gave me, even though he spent a significant amount of time on the work. Working with him and Suburban Masonry was a very positive experience.

Jeff put a great deal of work into carefully repairing and repointing the foundation of my 100+ year old home. He communicated well, explaining issues that came up and the continued care of the foundation. He was reliable and easy to work with. I am glad he did the job and would hire him again for other masonry needs.

Jeff was very personable and carefully described the project and timeline. He was very thorough and professional.
Description of Work: Our brick foundation and chimney needed pointing. The chimney cap needed replacement. We also had our foundation walls parged on the inside.

Thank you for your comment, Member. We were happy to help! To other members who may be interested to know the details of this job: This member's brick house is approximately 50 years old, and has sustained moisture damage that compromised the integrity of the mortar joints (the material between the brick); this was especially dramatic at the chimney and front porch. In the case of the chimney, the mortar joints were cleaned and prepped for repair, where high-strength, water resistant mortar was placed and finished at all joints on the exposed chimney (which was a through-roof chimney). At the front porch the mortar and brick has significantly deteriorated. Member chose to have the integrity of the walls repaired and then stucco was applied. Total cost of project: $2,000

Jeff Baker & crew were very professional and cleaned everything up when done - very pleased. He explained about choices of finish type for the stucco and made sure that I would get the style that I wanted.

The owner veneered these walls and piers herself with a composite stone. In this case she asked that I layout and build the block structure. Description of Work: Dug footers in very hard packed clay soil, poured the footers with rebar in place then laid cinderblock retaining walls around all piers and walls in the tall crawlspace/basement After an 8 month long total rehab project, the City Inspector would not approve us for a CO until the basement/tall crawlspace was updated to meet today's code. All the piers had been undercut more than 50yrs ago (and no, we had absolutely no foundation issues) and so needed to be reinforced with cinderblocking. I had 4 different masons come and look/give estimates. jeff baker of suburban masonry was the best fit. he was great to work with - punctual, committed, and very talented. he worked well with my structural engineer to make sure it would pass inspection with flying colors (and it did!). he stayed late many evenings since he knew i was on a deadline and cleaned up perfectly afterwards. i would highly rec him to anyone!

I enjoyed working with you and the engineer to create the best strategy to meet the city's requirements. I'm glad the inspection went well, and I hope you enjoy your newly renovated house. You did and amazing job! To other potential clients who may be interested to know more detail concerning this job, and about Suburban Masonry: This job was required by the city for structural support of a 100+ year old house. As Member described, the city believed the foundation of the house had been compromised by the excavation of the crawl space that was done to accommodate a furnace and other mechanical equipment. To dig the footers, the compacted clay soil required a pneumatic hammer for excavation. Rebar was tied horizontally and vertically (2' on center and at all block termination and corners), and installed to cover the entire vertical dimension of walls and piers. One retaining wall and 4 piers were constructed using 8" block, which were grouted solidly with concrete. These structures were built proximate to the existing soil, and were backfilled with washed gravel to provide the required structural support for the existing foundation of the house. My father started Suburban Masonry in 1963, in Alexandria, VA. With nearly 60 years experience, Suburban Masonry is dedicated to providing exacting workmanship and professionalism on small and large construction projects alike - be it residential or commercial.
