You will absolutely reap the benefits of Michael’s commitment to quality work, combined with clear and transparent communication. I felt respected and listened to every step of the way. I will be ever grateful I turned to Right Building to help me realize my home renovation vision, the results of which are more beautiful than I even imagined. Although a complex project with a tight budget, it was so worth doing! Michael cares that his sub-contractors are people of integrity who bring a high level of craftsmanship to their work, and they enjoy working for him.

Michael was our general contractor on a 1500 sq. ft. shop and in-law suite we built on our property in Oakley. After the completion of a year-long project, my opinion of his work is pretty high, but he's also just an objectively good contractor. He returns phone calls, showed up when he said he would, and delivers a product that passes inspections and looks great. He was willing to work within our specific budget constraints and desire for homeowner involvement, and the final cost of our project was right on target with what Michael originally quoted. His sub-contractors were also high quality and spoke highly of working with Michael. Several of them I still call for maintenance needs with the new structure or our existing house. We couldn't be happier with the work.
What I learned from not hiring Michael Hurd, General Contractor at Right Building ([*** Link removed ***] I thought I could save money by not having a GC. Instead, the amount spent on putting in a bathroom, kitchen and laundry room in my basement came out to the same amount the GC had estimated which included his fee. The work took way too long and I was at the mercy of the workers because I didn’t have the needed expertise in those areas to supervise and make decisions about what was being done. In the end I needed to hire and consult with Michael for his expertise about the final product and how it might affect the appraisal of my house. If I had hired him in the first place it would have saved me money, stress, and resulted in a better finished product.

He completed the project on time. Everybody we dealt with was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The solution looks good. His price was fair--surprisingly low. And it works. I would recommend this company to anyone I know.
Description of Work: My driveway slopes down from a cul de sac and if the water coming down it during a heavy rain doesn't flow away from it in precisely the right direction, I get water against my basement walls and foundation. I asked Michael Hurd of Right Building to look at my "wet wall" problem and help me devise a solution. He explained the problem with the slope of the driveway, suggested a solution and managed several contractors to get it implemented.

Michael is an excellent contractor. He provided an accurate, itemized estimate. He got the work done in a timely manner. He was easy to talk to about the project and didn't mind when I changed my mind about a few things. He got the whole project done well under budget. His carpentry team and all the subcontractor he used did great work.
Description of Work: Michael helped me loft my living room ceiling, and create a loft bedroom open to the living room. He arranged insulation, and drywalling as well as prepping the house for both, and trimming out areas after the dry walling was done. His team also redid a small area of exterior siding.

Working with Michael at Right Building and his subcontractors was a breeze! Michael was SO helpful and answered a million questions about different projects we'd like to do on the house. We settled on just doing the popcorn ceiling removal for now. The work crew got started with prep work early and started on the date promised. They worked VERY hard and finished just about a day later than planned, which wasn't a big deal (especially considering the difficulty and detail of the work). There was one spot on the ceiling that didn't come out quite right, but they came back twice until it came out to my liking. Our ceilings look A.MA.ZING. I seriously look at them every day and appreciate the amount of work that went into making them look so good. They are smooth and clean and make the house look new. Popcorn ceiling removal is very, very messy and there's no way I would take on that job myself. I would definitely recommend Right Building for this job and will be using them for future projects.

This company did a great job that looked beautiful but it came in way over the price we thought it would be. The price was within the estimate (which was broad) but we felt that the estimate wasn't explained exactly correctly and were expecting it to be much less. We ended up using someone else for the rest of the work around our house because of pricing.

Michael is a pleasure to work with. He was always great at communicating about the job from day one until the very last day. We never felt rushed with Michael. He took a lot of time to assess the job and discuss different options with us, including ways we could save money. The subcontractors were excellent. Rafael and his crew were very professional, incredibly hard-working, and efficient. When they finished the job, there was no trace of their ever having been there except for the wonderful job that they did for us. When there were a few minor mishaps, Michael was always there to make sure that the situation was rectified as soon as possible. In summary, we will definitely use him in the future for construction and remodeling jobs. The work exceeded our expectations and we are thrilled with the outcome!

We have hired Michael for a couple of different projects to our 1937 log cabin. He did an amazing job and added fabulous suggestions on alternative ways to meet our goals and stick close to our budget. Since he is detail oriented this helped in keeping the communication clear throughout the whole process plus kept to a tight schedule on both of our projects. I would absolutely recommend him and look forward to working with him again on future projects.

Found Michael on Angie's list. First time home buyer here, and Michael performed structural work in crawl space and attic shortly after moving in. What a keeper! Relatively small and simple jobs on the grand scale of general contracting, but from start to finish was overall extremely pleased with the experience, including his knowledge, professionalism, responsiveness, and communication. And he came in under the original quoted amount. Will 100% use again in future, and recommending to other locals in town.

I am very happy with the finished bathroom. The entire job was very well managed. - the people showed up when I was told they would which is very important since I work at home. - They provided flexibility to fit my work and travel schedule. - Everyone was very friendly, professional and they cleaned up after themselves. - The final amount we owed was almost the exact quote I was given so no surprises - I was told along the way what to expect and what the next steps were so I was able to provide the necessary items (such as paint, toilet, tub...) on time. - Any time I had a question, Michael provided a quick response I would recommend Right Building to others and will use them again for other projects.
Description of Work: We remodeled a bathroom. The room had to be gutted and a wall knocked out to expand the size to fit a bathtub. Everything was replaced - tile, painting, plumbing, electric. A vanity was created out of an old hutch I had (this was Michael's idea) and it saved me a bit of money.
Our house was built in 1940 with all-plaster walls & ceilings. As with all things time takes its toll. By the time I contacted Michael at Right Building, numerous stress cracks had formed in the walls and in the ceilings in at least three of the rooms in our downstairs living area and the paint had begun to chip and crack. Michael was contacted for an estimate and despite his busy schedule showed up on the day scheduled right on time. Unlike some home repair specialists who would be content to simply address the issues discussed he immediately wanted to look at the joists on the floor above to ensure structural stability and make sure the damage was purely cosmetic. After scheduling with both he and his painter, Pedro, a few weeks in advance (they are in high demand), they arrived on the appointed day at the appointed time and promptly got to work, and work they did - quickly, efficiently and most of all in the cleanest fashion I've ever seen work like this done. I've encountered my fair share of drywall mudding and the subsequent sanding involved - it is a dusty, messy experience. After each of the three days Pedro worked, there was no dust, there was no mess - we simply had no cracks in our freshly painted walls and ceilings - it was as spotless a job as there could be. Amazing work. In addition, the speed with which this was accomplished was impressive. The above was completed in three days covering rooms measuring a total of almost 2000 square feet, and four hours a day on average at that. They don't drag their feet to pump up labor costs. Critical for people like us on a budget. I highly recommend Michael and Right Building. They gave us as much attention to detail as they would a much larger job that would get them in upwards of $30,000 or more. Hire them. Before we call them to come do the rest of our house!

Mike Hurd, owner of Right Building, is easy to work with and provides great guidance and suggestions. He brings a wealth of experience to construction like this and shares the experience with homeowners. For my remodel he did an excellent job overall and he also provided extra guidance in several areas : insulating the hot water pipes in the floor joyces, suggesting a rain gutter drainage fix to solve a retainer wall leak, designing a professional looking washer/dryer plumb wall, designing a connecting doorway from basement to garage, suggesting a solution for heater vent & return for basement heating (I would have forgotten the return part), and quality electrical and insulation work. Many of these tips made him little or no extra money - he just provided them to get the best quality out of the remodel. His framing crew was the best - that makes a huge difference. Because he is so good, I had to schedule 6 weeks in advance, but he stuck to that commitment and started work on the exact day he promised. He is juggling work in his booming business, but I never noticed it because he was very attentive to my needs and timing...I was treated like I was his only customer, even though I wasn't. Some companies seem overwhelmed in a remodel like this, but this seemed like easy stuff for Right Building...it's like they're doing this type of work all the time. I'm a very picky homeowner, and I know a thing or two about residential construction...they did a fantastic job, and I would recommend Right Building without hesitation. They will be the first company I turn to when the future need arises.
Description of Work: They took a basement and connecting garage that were both completely unfinished and framed, insulated, drywall, plumbed, installed heating vent and return, and doors to garage. They turned a rough unfinished basement and garage into a completely professional looking finished room and separate garage..(the drywall installing, finishing, and painting was not included in this price...Right Building would have done it, they do it all the time, but I had already hire someone for that work.)
They were friendly but professional. They're work was very good.
Description of Work: Moved walls. Apply texture to walls. Install new cherry cabinets with granite countertop. Took up existing flooring and purchased hard wood flooring. Installed new bathroom sink with cabinet and moved plumbing. Laid tile to complete bathroom floor. Installed crown molding and baseboard. Installed new lighting fixtures. Made helpful suggestions.

Response from Right Building
In the springtime onslaught of estimate requests, this estimate was indeed taking me a long time. Whenever I look at a new job, I ask all potential customers to contact me again if they haven't heard from me and are wanting to. I'd like to respond to every estimate request immediately, but the reality is that an estimate usually takes several hours or days to complete, and is free. In the spring, we get several requests all at once. I never got a second message from [removed member name]. I did check in with her and her husband later, and heard nothing back after that.

All work was completed within time frame and efficiently. Gutters took a little longer than planned but that was because of the rain. The work has improved my houses' appearance significantly and the roof job could have easily been misdiagnosed but has taken care of my problem perfectly.
Description of Work: Replace fascia on overhang and have gutters with screens installed. Moved electrical box for bathroom light. Hooked up ventilation for dryer. Installed a new outside door. Very, very well. On time for initial appointment. Prompt with estimate. Competitive in all quotes. Thorough in scheduling and follow up on all work. We had a lot of extra work added later. Michael was responsive, quick to get an expert and present a quote, prompt to arrange the added work. Michael was thorough in reviewing all work. He is very familiar with all aspects of construction/repair, and able to deal with any request. I'd recommend Michael for any job and would use him again.
The project price above is for 3 separate occasions, each a year apart. I feel like the work was professional, the cost was reasonable and I really valued Michael's willingness to sit down and work with me, really think out what the project would look like and possibilities and also to go out and find discount supplies when appropriate. I also asked to reduce costs if I could help with some things and he was very open to that as well. Mostly I was doing demolition of course, but I also picked out many of the fixtures at Lowe's and brought them back, etc. He has great folks working for him, with lots of good ideas about how to make the project more "green" if I chose.
Description of Work: Michael converted a partially finished basement into a classroom space, expanding the finished space and installing a bathroom.
