Overall it was a good experience. I would have said an excellent experience except, for the eventual cost more about this later. Scott turned out to be very knowledgeable about lime based masonry issues, skilled, and honest. Unlike the two other masons who gave me estimates on the job Scott said, he could not give me a single dollar cost estimate for the whole job but would have to charge by the hour because, as my brick house had been painted he couldn't judge the amount of mortar joints that would need to be repaired until he pressure washed and or tested them. Scott's ball park estimate was the highest of the three estimates but, I chose him anyway because of his clearer understanding of the special needs and issues involved with older brick construction. Indeed, the extent of the damaged mortar joints was much greater than was first apparent. This showed up right away, either in crumbled mortar barely held together by the paint or by extensive use of caulk hidden under the paint to hide damaged and missing mortar. He showed me what he was doing at every step so that I could see why he had to spend more time the rear lower wall of my house turned out to be riddled with badly decayed mortar joints than anticipated. Let me be clear, I don't blame Scott that the job turned out bigger than we both originally thought. That was because the bad joints were covered with new paint. And I am sure that if I had gone with the masons with the cheaper estimates they would either have asked to renegotiate once the greater extent of the problem emerged or have inadequately sped over the problem areas. I'm very pleased that my house is now structurally much improved. I am quite satisfied with the quality of Scott's workmanship.
Description of Work: I bought an 84-year-old house made of brick and stucco. The brick had been painted a no no I learned at some point. And perhaps as a result, many of the mortar joints had deteriorated badly due to water damage. I knew older brick houses were often built using lime mortar with little or no portland cement added and that it could be a damaging mistake to repaint the mortar joints mixing modern very hard Portland cement based mortar with the old lime based mortar. I needed a mason who knew about older lime based mortars and the problems of older brick structures. Scott was recommended to me by a local firm.
