Alex from Home Depot, Fairview Road, Asheville, was very efficient with his measuring and estimate. He told us that the materials would be delivered and placed on our front parking spot not in the yard. On the 17th, the day before the job was to start we returned home in the evening to find the materials stacked on our lawn in the front yard, not on the parking spot. Yard was a little rutted from the heavy truck backing onto our yard. Several branches were broken off our hemlock by the delivery people. Dana, the office person at Home Depot, (who has been very pleasant and efficient) is giving us a $50 gift card as compensation. We've received the card, thanks. The re-shingling seemed to go smoothly. They arrived around 7:45 AM, 18th August. At 3pm, Skip the foreman approached me and asked me to sign off on the job. He said that he needed to take the dumpster with the old shingles and tar paper to the land fill so he would be on time to his job the next morning. Just over half the shingles had been applied to the roof at that time. The job had not been finished. I declined to sign. We had an appointment so we left the house. As we returned around 6 pm, we saw the roofers' truck leaving the neighborhood. We were elated because we thought the job was finished. When we arrived home I noticed that there was plastic, tar paper and roofing debris in the driveway and laying around the yard. I did not drive in suspecting that nails had not been cleaned up. I made a 2 minute inspection of the driveway and back walk. I picked up 38 nails in that short time. I called Dana. She called Skip. He called me and said that he would be back in the morning to clean up. From the time I called Dana to the time that Skip called me back was about 15 minutes...good marks on that. Failing marks on cleaning up nails from our driveway and yard! My wife had a flat tire the week before from other roofers across the street. Extreme lack of training of their roofers! I climbed up on the roof and noticed 2 shingles on the ridge with their corners in the air...nails underneath them had not been pounded all the way in. There were hundreds of old roofing nails in our gutters. Otherwise, the top of the shingles looked OK. Skip arrived the 19th with a helper. The helper got up on the roof and pounded in the two nails that were holding up corners of the ridge shingles. Skip picked up most of the trash from the yard and magnetically swept the driveway and also the yard in one spot for nails. I have found 5 more nails in the driveway since. I found one in the yard later, where they swept, just in time to avoid stepping on it. Failing marks on thoroughness. After I asked, the helper also cleaned the large number of nails out of the gutters as well as the tar paper, plastic bits, and empty plastic water bottle that had accumulated in the rain gutter during their job. The shingles on the ridge all face to the right, except for the last three shingles on the left which face left. Poor training of roofers, again. . . .lack of supervision. The new drip edge on the front of the house was pieced together with one long piece, a shorter piece and a 12 inch scrap. More poor training. I had them change that to a one piece drip edge the morning of the cleanup, the 19th.. From the outside, the shingling job looks pretty good. Inside the attic, two pieces of planking about a foot long and 3 inches wide each were broken out of the roof, under the ridge. This house was built in 1952. Pine planks were used for the roof, not plywood. I did not ask them to repair it because I do not want them in my house. I'll repair it myself. I expected more for my money because of my contact with Home Depot sales people. The professional and courteous way I've been treated every time I enter my favorite toy store - Home Depot - were what sold me initially. I've definitely learned my lesson that Home Depot contractors are not Home Depot! I'll definitely stay on site during any more work that I have other contractors do on my home. I will personally organize any remodeling or maintenance on my home. I will not delegate it to Home Depot. I have learned -how- to trust them. I like purchasing tools from them, but, based on this experience, not using their outside contractors. The new roof has done pretty well through several inches of rain since August. It is now mid-October that I write this report. No water spots on our ceiling! Yea! I am grateful for shelter.

The installation went great. They showed up on time and finished in one day. I had never seen so many workers. There were around 10! The cleaning was okay, but it was not great. I guess they could improve on that.
