Jim Calloway presented himself as very friendly when he was bidding on the work. After I told him I wanted to proceed, he showed up with a contract and informed me just before I signed that it would be a limited warranty because he did not prepare the base. He would not go into detail about what that meant he would cover, and I was a little put off, but frankly he was the only one in town available to do the work this year, (and now I know why) and his ratings on Angie's list gave me some comfort that this would turn out ok. Boy, was I wrong. Jim showed up as scheduled and seemed to be doing ok, but by the end of the day he seemed to be very anxious to wrap up and leave. I noticed the curb he put in place on one side of the driveway was only about 2" high for most of the approximately 200' run and brought it to his attention. Our contract specified that the curb be 4" high or more. Jim argued with me that it was 4" to 6" high, but I put a level on it and it was 2" or less in most areas. He finally agreed to build up a 25' section that was the most critical to channeling water away from the down hill slope on that side of the driveway. He hurriedly had his crew throw some more material on top and tamp it down, but his effort was still short of the contract. It was clear he was done and was going to leave and didn't care much about meeting the terms of our contract. I finally told him I would observe it and call him back if I still had a water issue. About 2 or 3 months later we had our first snow. I had invested $12,000 in this driveway and cautiously hand shoveled it. When I got near the road I hit a spot where the asphalt started coming up. I stopped shoveling that area. After the snow melted I called Jim and told him I wanted to meet with him to go over the condition of the driveway surface, which in addition to the spot coming up, several other areas were also rough. After not hearing from him for a couple of weeks I called him and he said he had "already been out to look at the driveway ." He did this without my knowledge and made no effort to contact me to tell me what he had found. He refused to meet with me. I had also consulted with another professional and he agreed the surface was not well finished, and suggested two alternatives to fix it - One, to heat the asphalt and re-roll it or two, have the driveway sealed. I brought up both alternative with Jim and he refused to do either. He said the driveway turned out well but did offer to fix the one area near the road that had gravel broke loose on the surface. He would come out in the spring to patch that area. In the meantime, a crack had developed at the interface of the old pavement that had been overlaid and the new pavement where he had cut out a section per our contract. To my dismay, there is also grass coming up through the asphalt ( in a driveway that is only 6 months old) and discovered that area had less than an inch of new asphalt over the old. I called Jim and asked him to come out and discuss these issues with me before he scheduled his repair work. Again, he did not call me ahead of time as I had requested, but this time I was home and was able to talk to him. He said he wasn't responsible for grass coming through and tried to show me that we had more than 2" of asphalt in that area. What he was actually counting was the thickness of the old asphalt, which had a very thin layer of new asphalt in that area. He told me to just put some Round-up on it and refused to do anything to fix it. He also said he wasn't responsible for the crack where he cut the old asphalt and blended the surfaces, but offered to put some sealer on it. He would not rework it. When Jim came he brought Jay, who is taking over the business as Jim is retiring. Jay seemed more amenable to talking, but Jim ushered Jay into his truck and left in a huff. I had to stop them from driving away to get a commitment from Jay to do the re-work the first week of June. What he plans to do will help two of the issues, but does not address the overall quality of the product. I will also end up with a patched driveway after spending $12,000 for a new one. I would hope that Jay, the new owner, is more than a little concerned that he is now the owner of a company that has provided such poor quality work and abominable customer service. Given the circumstances of my experience with Calloway Contracting, I would not recommend them to anyone.

Received a quote to have our driveway replaced. The work crew showed up when they said that they would and were pleasant. Found out the quote that we approved did not involve reinstalling an underground drainage system like the one that was taken up. Spoke with Mr. Calloway who said to reinstall the underground drainage system would cost an additional $1000. Quality of asphalt was questionable. The result was a irregular chunky rough and patchy looking surface. It is not uncommon for chucks of material to be lifted out when I blow off the driveway. We also paid an additional sum for treatment of fungus before asphalt was spread. Within 6 months, we had several fungal growths break through surface of our new driveway. Can not recommend Calloway Contracting.

Jim Calloway did an absolutely outstanding job paving my driveway. We live quite a ways up a mountain, so the driveway was quite steep and quite long. Jim did a beautiful job grading and preparing the surface. The driveway came out beautifully and we've already received numerous compliments on it: both looks and drive-ability. It really is outstanding work, both aesthetically and structurally. In addition, Mr. Calloway solved some fairly serious erosion issues we were having. I can't recommend this man enough. Note that he's quite popular, because his work is well-known and respected, so he is busy. Please don't pay attention to the reviews of folks that didn't contract with him. He's busy but once we engaged with him (very competitive bid), he was responsive, very helpful in solving our issues, and did a lovely job. He did the work for exactly what we agreed upon, did it exactly when he said he would, and exceeded my expectations in every way. This man has decades of experience and takes great pride in his work, and it shows!

The driveway was dug out and looked pretty good .The paving part is as if amateurs have done the job.One part looks okay but the bottom part is very rough and has holes in it.He said he would come back and resurface the entire bottom part of the drive. After me calling him a couple of times he finally came on the 27th of June. They brought 1/2 bucket of sealer and put it on 1/2 of the bottom part and it still has holes in this part that they coated .But it looks as if we just had it patched .It looks AWFUL. I joined Angies list in order to find a reputable contractor didn't happen.I won't do this again........

Mr. Calloway was very responsive to my initial phone call. Scheduled a time for and estimate and was prompt. We were given a verbal estimate with several options for completing the job. Mr. Calloway seemed very eager to do the work and called us back several times asking if we had come to any decision. After my Husband and I discussed how we were going to proceed I called and asked for a written estimate plus 3 references. Mr. Calloway seemed insulted that I was asking for these things and asked me if I gone to Angie's list to see his reviews. I told him know that I did not have a membership, which at the time I did not. I explained that I did not have much luck with the site and was no longer a member. He then asked me to call his office number and leave my email address on his answering machine so he could send us the estimate and references. I called his office number and Mr. Calloway picked up the phone. I explained that I was calling to give him my email address so he could send the estimate which he asked me to hang up and he would not pick up the the phone so I could leave my email address on the machine. Not sure why he could not just write it down. Any good business person and informed consumer knows that a written estimate not only protects the consumer it protects the business should any dispute arise. I know he says he has been doing this for 30 years so you would think he would know that a verbal estimate is worth the paper it is written on. **In response to Mr. Calloways response. Fact-Mr. Calloway was responsive to my phone call and scheduled an appt for an estimate and arrived promptly. Fact-Mr. Calloway measured the drive. Fact-Mr. Calloway gave us a verbal estimate. Fact-Mr. Calloway called several times after giving a verbal estimate. Opinion- Mr. Calloway seemed eager to do the job. Fact-We asked for a written estimate and 3 references. Opinion-I felt like Mr Calloway insulted that I asked for the written estimate and references. Fact-Called twice and left a message once Mr. Calloways answering machine. Fact-We never heard from Mr. Calloway again. Opinion- Mr. Calloway says he has been doing this for 30 years so you would think he would know that a verbal estimate is worth the paper it is written on. Fact-We most likely were going to use Mr. Calloway for this job. Fact-If you request your potential clients to use Angie's list to read the companies reviews. Then you have to be willing to accept they will use the website to also post their experience be it positive or negative. Fact taken from Angie's list business page "After you interact with members, they submit reviews on their experiences." That is what we based the review on, our interactions. That how Angie's list is set up. We would have been happy to join Angie's list to give a positive review if we had had one.

I have read and re-read this member's comments and find them not only very hard to understand and confusing but completely unnecessary. I thought Angie's list was intended to report on businesses that you've actually done business with. Of the last four reviews, three are from members that we've not done work for. It's unreal to be put in a position to defend oneself and one's business simply because so many people just want to complain about something. I am to the point that if this is all that Angie's List means then it doesn't mean as much as I thought it would to my business. When it comes down to a matter of 'he said, she said', who wins in that? Because we are blessed enough with more work and more requests for work than we could possibly do, it is pointless to continue to 'defend' against these personal opinions. Not based upon our work but on misunderstandings, one-sided complaints and even mis-identification in one instance. I guess we’re expected to be perfect all the time. We’re not, but we'll keep working and keep doing our best. If someone has to re-join Angie's List just to be able to make comments such as these, you got your two cents worth even if it cost you $10.00. I hope you find someone competent and capable of doing the kind of work we do every day. We'll not stop being proud of our work and doing the very best we can on every single job. This just gives me another opportunity to thank all of those who have posted grateful, positive reviews after the work was done.

You should always get 3 good estimates before contracting work. From this experience, I suggest that you do not contact this company for one. I asked for a quote on sealing and he attempted to get me to redo my entire driveway which honestly is not in bad condition at all. I told him that I was only interested in sealcoat and if he did not want to do it, he could leave. He said that he would be glad to do anything I wanted. Then he came up with a quote for sealing that is 4 times the national average for this work. He appeared to just look around without costing it out properly. And he did not give me a written estimate, just a verbal quote. When I told him that he was 4 times higher than my other two estimates, he stated that he does things right and doesn't use the cheap stuff. I told him that I wasn't interested. The next day, he called to say that I did not understand his quote. That he had included some patch work as well. I told him that I still was not interested.
Description of Work: Gave me an outrageous quote to perform sealing of my driveway.

I agree, getting more than one quote is always advisable. You’re likely to get different opinions as well as different prices. You either choose the lowest price or consider the experience and reputation of the contractor even if his quote is higher. This member was obviously looking for the lowest price. When I arrived, this member asked for my recommendations then went back inside while I worked up a quote. I measured, made notes and determined what needed to be done. I discussed with him the need to do some patch work before doing the seal coat (I did not call him the next day and have not spoken to him until today (the 29th) when he called me stating that his intent was to get me off Angie’s List. I have no idea why.) If this member thought that I had quoted too high, that’s fine. But, to feel like it was necessary to insult and demean me and my company was not. The last negative review was from someone I also had not done work for (and had never met) and as I mentioned in my response to that member, we haven’t been doing seal work because we’ve been so busy with other work. Because we have been getting more and more requests for seal work, I thought this might be a job we could fit in if it was simply a seal job. I’ve been doing this kind of work for over 30 years and know when I would be taking advantage of a customer and just will not do it. The other quotes this member got were clearly lower but I wasn’t going to come out and seal a driveway that had cracks and buckles that needed to be repaired. I don’t work like that and recommended that some needed patch work be done first but certainly did not attempt to get him to redo his entire driveway, not for $1,500. It is amazing to me that instead of using this forum to help others that some people use it simply to air their complaints. Justified or not. If you want the cheapest, you don’t want us doing the work. But if you want good, reliable, honest work done, that’s all we offer. Thank you to all of those we have done work for who have written great reviews about actual work done. A negative review from someone who just disagrees with you doesn’t mean much at all.

Jim Calloway is very dedicated to providing the best service and result for customer. He is very knowledgeable in his field and answered all my questions ....and I had a lot ! Ladies , as we manage a good portion of home repairs, here is a man you can trust to do a great job . He is respectful to the environment ( I live on a lake) and at the end of the project left a clean work site. He kept me posted as to the timing of the project since we were having alot of rain. I was also able to call him with additional questions/ concerns His crew has been with him many years and all were prepared to do a comprehensive job. The pitch of the driveway is perfect for drainage. So glad I used his company...my yard looks so much better. Just love the results!

This is one of the downsides and how Angie's List can be misused. I have no idea who this person is and have never spoken to or made an appointment with her. We have been so busy with paving work that we have not even had the time to do seal work so I would not have made an appointment to do so. I believe she has confused me with another contractor by the same last name (not related to me) who does do seal work on a regular basis.I would hope that this member would contact me and remove this review. Please look at my profile and I believe you'll realize that you have mistaken us.

I was very happy with the work that was done, the drainage is perfect, and the driveway makes a big difference, we do not have to worry about our family and friends driving up the driveway and busting an oil pan, which has happened before. The UPS driver made it a point to let us know that the driveway was great ,he was very excited. The only thing I cannot report on is how long the driveway will last since it was done last month, but I am confident that the job was done right and it will last for a long time, there is a thick layer of pavement and the driveway was prepared properly before paving, it is very smooth and the water drains properly so there is no puddles. I found this company on Angie's List, and I highly recommend Calloway Contracting to anyone looking to pave their driveway.
Description of Work: Graded and paved 595 square yards of driveway, I payed $6,500 before the work started and another $6,500 upon completion Jim Calloway came out and did the estimate on Oct 3, 2012, he was punctual and very professional, the price was very reasonable considering the length and condition of the driveway. There was a considerable amount of grading needed to prep the driveway for paving. From the house the driveway does almost a 90 degree turn and the grade going down creates a drainage problem which causes the gravel to wash out. On the following Monday, the grading was completed which took about 8 hours, there was about 4 to 6 inches of road bond used which was packed down, the grade on the turn was decreased which will make it easier for us in the Winter time. The next day road bond was applied, B-Mix was used which has a larger aggregate, this will make the driveway last longer, and it will provide a rougher texture, which will help in the winter time. There were more employees working and it only took six hours.

Disatisfied to say the least. They seem to be just another typical contractor that is unreliable.
Description of Work: I contacted Calloway Contracting to get an estimate on repaving my driveway. They called back and told me that they would come out to my area to give an estimate in about one week. On the day they were supposed to give me the estimate they never showed up and did not call to cancel. Response from Calloway Contracting
Unbelievable! As a small business owner who has learned through over 30 years in business that time is so valuable and so limited, it’s tough to find the time to respond to this. When you are the office manager, who answers the phone, takes messages and tries to timely respond to each call; project manager, who travels to potential jobs to give estimates (whether they end up being jobs or not); bookkeeper, who makes payroll, does the billing, pays bills, etc. and the one who gets out there and does all the work, to have to defend yourself because a time could not be worked out to drive over 60 miles – one-way – with no guarantee that you’ll get the work just doesn’t seem right. After several phone calls back and forth, attempts to schedule a time to meet, none of which would work for this customer, and phone calls the day we finally scheduled (never getting an answer), unfortunately, there has to come a point when you have to realize that this is one job you’ll have to forego and move on. It’s also unfortunate that a scheduling conflict would cause someone to post such a negative comment. I believe it’s very clear from reading all the comments and reports which ones are credible and which are simply an opportunity to harm.

The crew was great. They had all of the necessary equipment, started early, and worked all day. Everyone was a professional. The driveway was graded in such a way that my previous deflection dams were not necessary.. Drainage is excellent.
Description of Work: This was the only contractor who felt that I needed to remove the old asphalt in order to get a lasting driveway. That is what I thought but three other companies wanted to only pave over my bad surface. His bid to do all of the work, inclyding removal of the old driveway, was still a good bit less than one of the others.

Jim Calloway was pleasant and very easy to work with--we had a great experience and would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality job.
Description of Work: We have a long and steep driveway. We had our driveway sealed while we were away for 4 days since you have to stay off the driveway for three days after sealing. I have lots of beautiful landscaping along the driveway. Not one plant was disturbed. Th driveway looked perfect in every way. No sealant was on the garage or stone walkways. Just overall a superb job.
