A few years ago, we hired Steve to service 3 propane fireplace stoves in our home and to clean the chimney. He was quite friendly and did an excellent job. The stoves were in need of servicing again last year and we called him again. Steve arrived with an assistant and worked on repairing the stoves. He got one working, while two of them needed replacement parts, which he said he would order and come back to finish the job. He was friendly and talkative, just like the first time we'd hired him. However we never received a call to schedule the completion of the job. We called and left a message and received no reply. We called again. And again. And again. Over the course of several months. Each time we called we left a polite message. We let it go for a few months, then finally called again. This time Steve answered his phone. As soon as I said my name, HE HUNG UP ON ME! We ended up calling another company, and they examined the two non-functioning stoves and told me that Steve had taken the entire guts out of one of the stoves, which we now had to replace. The cost of repairing our stoves went through the roof since we had to pay two companies and replace the parts Steve had taken. Do NOT hire this company. Don't let the A reviews fool you. If the job requires any kind of follow-up, you'll be left out in the cold.

If ever there was someone who deserved to be called "An expert in their field," it's Steve Smith. When it comes to fireplaces, he is THE GUY. Not only did he check every part of the fireplace, he thoroughly cleaned everything and testing everything to make sure it worked perfectly. He was right on time and had everything with him to do the job. It could not have been done any better.

Very strange situation. Steve responded promptly to initial call of gas leakage at our gas log set. He came and tightened fittings and checked for leaks and we thought the problem was solved. But it wasn't -- turns out that the pilot was leaking (that is, it was a bad gas control valve). We discussed this with Steve over the phone, and he asked me to email him the model number of the gas controller so we could decide whether to replace the whole control unit of just order parts to fix it. I emailed him this into -- but then after several more telephone calls over the following six weeks, he never responded again. We finally gave up and called another service. Steve was very friendly and conscientous at first so his falling-off-the-radar was unexpected., and we hope nothing is amiss.

The outcome of this project suprised me. Asheville fireplace and gas service has done routine maintenance for me , my family members and several of my customers for about 5 years. Always doing excelent work at a fair price. I contacted them about a repair at the home of one of my customers that lives out of state and has a vacation home here. They showed up on time and looked at the project. Mr. Smith told me what he thought was the best way to resolve the problem, which included removing two flue covers and the existing fireplace cap. The agreed upon plan was to resecure the existing cap, reinstall the two existing flue covers and install new flashing where needed around the flues to stop water from coming in. Mr. Smith showed up to do the repairs and told me to come by at about noon and he should be done. When I got to the house he was done. I could see that there was not any new flashing installed around the flues. I asked him about it and he said that after he looked at it he didn't think any flashing was needed, even though he said it needed flashing on his first visit. Instead of metal flashing he spread roof tar and silicone around the flues. I told him we shoud do the repair according to the agreed upon plan as I had gone over the price and plan with the homeowner. Mr. Smith was very nice and said he had an appointment a few streets away and would come back and install the metal. He said for me to come back at around 2 oclock and he would be done. I went back and waited until about 2:30. He never came back or called. The next day I called him and it went to voicemail. Then I left a message at the office number. About 5 minutes later Mr. Smith texted me and said there was no charge for his visit the previous day and that he was not coming back . He also said there was no need for me to call them again.

Steve returned my call within 5 minutes and scheduled an appointment first thing in the morning the next day. Steve and an assistant arrived exactly on time and went right to work trouble shooting the fireplace. Within about 30 minutes he had diagnosed and fixed the electrical problem. He the serviced and cleaned the whole unit. It works better than it did when it was brand new. I plan to call them back for annual service or any other problems.

We like to use Angie's list to find service providers, and I was a bit concerned to see that this company had a previous F given for a no show, but there was a positive review, so I contacted them because we really needed help with our stove. Our stove pipe had literally fallen out of the ceiling, leaving a large hole into the attic and an unusable stove. They came out within a few days and evaluated the problem that would require a new part and stove pipe. The gentleman promised to get back to us with a price for the part. After not hearing from him, my husband called them. A date was set for the return visit with the parts to repair the stove. When that date arrived, someone called shortly before the appointment time and said that they had received the wrong part and would have to reorder. Why would you wait until a few minutes before an appointment to open and look at an ordered part? Another date was set, but then they called and said they needed to go to SC to do some gas line work that pays them more money than local repairs. So, another date was set. When that day arrived, they called and said the part would be arriving about 3PM (what?, it's been weeks and you are just now getting the part?), and if it did they would be out before 5PM to fix the stove. No comment was made about what they would do if the part didn't arrive by that time. By this time, weeks have passed with our stove unrepaired. No further call from this company. We called them two more times, and in our last message we asked them to call and let us know one way or the other whether they had the part and ever intended to repair our stove. No return call or apology ever received. Apparently this company provides good service for some people, but in our case, the whole experience was stressful and disappointing. If they did not ever intend or want to take care of our stove situation, they should have said so at the outset instead of stringing us along for well over a month. If you only want to serve certain areas of the city or county, then also say so. We feel that this company's honesty and service is extremely questionable.

Poorly. No show.
Description of Work: I was very impressed with the reviews here and contacted Mr Smith who quoted me $50 on an inspection. I explained this was a 2nd opinion as I had just had my chimneys swept and there were findings that my chimneys needed repair. I made it very clear that I was not using my fireplace at professional advice until it was repaired and that I had no other heat source. Mr Smith was very nice at first and agreed to come out on Monday at 9am. He called the night before and left a msg to make sure my roof was free of snow, which it was as I told him in a return msg. He never called back to confirm he was still coming. I called him 30 minutes before his appt, and I found out he was 'covered up' from many other calls despite me having an appt and would not be here. He said he could be at my home by 2:30p. He never showed up. He didn't return 3 phone calls. I got a text message the next day saying he couldn't get there until Saturday. And 'besides, if your chimney is cracked I don't do inserts'. His friendliness and willingness to perform the promised inspection had quickly evaporated and essentially blew me off, knowing I had no other heat source and was depending on his promised inspection and quote for service. I would not depend on him if I were you.

Response from ASHEVILLE FIREPLACE & GAS SERVICE
We at Asheville Fireplace & Gas Service sincerely apologize for the "no show" and poor communications. We should have communicated at the outset that based on the information given us we did not have the expertise to do the type of chimney relining that she needed. Our thinking was that it would have been unfair to charge her $50 to visit her home to evaluate the problem when we had already been told what the problem was and knew we were unable to fix it. Our fault for the poor communication.

I called yesterday after business hours for an appointment. My brother had previously used Ashevile Fireplace and highly recommended them, plus I checked them out on Angie's List. I received a return phone call this morning first thing, and they were able to come out this afternoon. I was told that an inspection/cleaning generally runs $50, that if the chimney needed cleaning the total would be about $150. The two men arrived on time and they were polite, respectful and knowledgeable. One set to work on the wood stove, and other went up on the roof to inspect the chimney. The gentlemen who worked on the wood stove was super nice about letting me watch and ask questions, especially since I've never had or used a wood stove before. He had to take the stove apart because (as it turned out), the tubes under the brick plates were not the originals and they couldn't be removed the usual way. He cleaned it out thoroughly and made sure the air lever was working properly. In addition, he gave me a tutorial on how to use the stove and how to keep it clean, and recommended I get a wood stove thermometer and a hearth rug, both of which should be available at my local wood stove shop in Black Mountain. The other gentleman climbed on the roof to check the chimney and reported that the chimney did not need cleaning, but that the flashing around the chimney was loose. (This was a problem that was supposed to have been taken care of before I bought the house...guess not.) He was able to properly affix the flashing with anchors. Total cost for inspection, cleaning and fixing the flashing came in at $120, which I think was very fair. Overall, I was very pleased with their work and am excited about trying out my wood stove come fall. I would recommend Asheville Fireplace without reservation. My only regret is that I didn't ask the two men's names, to properly recognize them here.
Description of Work: Asheville Fireplace inspected and cleaned my Vermont Castings woodstove, inspected the chimney and determined that it did not need cleaning, and fixed loose flashing around the chimney brick and roof. In addition, since I wasn't familiar with the workings of a wood stove, they explained to me in detail how to use a wood stove and recommended that I get a woodstove thermometer and a hearth rug.

I have used Asheville Fireplace to service my Vermont Castings gas log fireplace for several years. They come promptly, work efficiently, answer all my questions, and always leave the work area clean and tidy. This fireplace is an older model, and they have kept it working perfectly. I didn't get a manual for it when I bought the house. So, Steve Smith's willingness to answer my questions has been a very important element in my total satisfaction with their service. I feel the price I have been charged is a very good value.
