I highly recommend Marvin and would hire him any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Description of Work: I bought a home built in 1947 in Bryson City, North Carolina. The home had been used as a rental since the 1970's. Layers of tile on top of linoleum on top of tile had been installed in the kitchen. Marvin Ashburn refinished my original hardwood kitchen floors to their former GLORY!! Marvin is a true artist, he loves wood and works magic with a sander. He's reliable, a rare character trait in a tradesmen but he actually arrives when he is scheduled and finishes when scheduled. He's extremely knowledgeable, which is most helpful when deciding timing of refinishing given variations in temperature and humidity in our area. He's also fair and worth every penny you'll spend.

The floors were reclaimed hardwood and had been oiled. When we remodeled they got filled with drywall dust. He sanded and refinished. They are beautiful. A big plus is that his equipment literally does catch all the dust so it made things a lot nicer! The floors are gorgeous and I would recommend him.

Description of Work: The crew was very good at cleaning up as hey went. Very important for floor refinishing. They sanded and finished the flooring with an oil based poly that turned out great. They also matched floor woods perfectly between thresholds. It was a satin finish on red oak floors that were 70+ years old. I would recommend them to anyone.

They were very competitive. He showed up when he said he would be here. He did an outstanding job, better than what was indicated on Angie's List. He left the place clean and did a much better job that some other people I have used. They were clean, he was timely, he did a great job and can clean up other people's messes and give you a professional floor.

Marvin and Scott sanded and vacuumed the floors very thoroughly and carefully, leaving virtually no dust. They prepared a variety of stain samples to help us to determine exactly which would work the best. Once the floors were stained and allowed to dry, they were vacuumed again and sealed with shellac . Three coats of high quality and quot;Trafficand quot; acrylic urethane were applied (2 gloss and 1final satin), and quot;screeningand quot; (scuffing) and vacuuming between coats. The floors look fantastic and the finish should last a very long time. Marvin and Scott were very professional and hard-working.

Installed new oak hardwood floor. Marvin had to match the cadence of the floor from two different areas and, therefore, had to carefully trimlengthwise several boards to make it all match seamlessly. You simply cannot locate the 3 boards he trimmed by 3/16 inch! He also refinished all the floors, and you cannot tell the new flooring he installed from the 50 year old existing flooring. Excellent work, great value, on time!

I removed existing carpet in living room, dining room and hallway including padding and staples, and tack strips around walls. I also rented a sander and presanded the area. Ashburn finished the sanding, stained and sealed the hardwood and gave me credit for the presanding work I had performed. The project lasted 3 days. The finished area looks great.

I waited quite some time to file this review. I wanted to be sure that we would be as satisfied with our purchase and its installation 6 months after its completion as when it was brand new. * We are very pleased with the EcoTimber and its installation.* However, I hope to never have to do this again...EVER! Despite everything arriving on time and work being done on schedule, it took some 6 weeks to get our home back to normal. Marvin and his assistant were fanatical about cleanup and dust containment at the end of each work day. Despite the tarps, the dust got everywhere. I would suggest bagging and further covering everything, everywhere. Again, he vacuumed all the time. We moved all the furniture ourselves. Some of the wall entertainment units were 100's of pounds. We discovered the furniture could be easily slid / moved on LAYERS of flattened heavy cardboard boxes (i.e. ones flooring came in). Despite all the weight, the new bamboo was never scratched this way. This was a nearly perfect job. A few nails had were noticeable and had to be countersunk. We attached 'Marvin approved' rounded white plastic feet to our kitchen chair. My husband and I are respectively 165 lbs and 130 lbs yet these protectors did not do their job. The flooring has a few superficial scratches under these chairs. DO =Use only the felt pads under any frequently moved furniture; they, annoyingly, have to be repositioned and often replaced. There were two large pencil marks that were sealed to the floor under the Bona Kemi, unfortunately in very visible areas. When the floor is refinished, I will make sure they are removed. The minor criticism above should not dissuade anyone from using Marvin Ashburn as their hardwood installer. The man is a true flooring craftsman and artisan who takes much pride in his work. We had this work done during the winter months. He and his assistant did everything to keep in the house heat, not trek in the rain or lawn debris and, as stated above, did intense cleanup every work day. We sincerely recommend Ashburn's Custom Floors for the installation of EcoTimber bamboo (one of the toughest jobs); we will readily use him again for repairs, refinish and another install.
Description of Work: Marvin Ashburn was recommended by The Arch, the local vendor of the EcoTimber. This project was in the planning and research stage for over 7 years. We liked the high ratings given the last 2 years to this product by the leading consumer magazine. EcoTimber is a both a solid and engineered / laminate bamboo flooring; it emits very little pollutants and regrows quickly and is therefore a renewable wood source. We have two large ex-racing greyhounds; their size, weight and gangly legs can easily scratch flooring. The EcoTimber, while not impervious to their nail damage, has held up extremely well. The EcoTimber flooring is very hard and splinters easily. From my research, we decided that its installation required an bamboo experienced professional. After consideration of several carpenters, we chose Marvin Asburn of Ashburn's Custom Floors. The new wood was laid in five areas...the bedroom hallway, the family room, the adjoining kitchen, the foyer, and a basement stair landing. Marvin ripped out our old carpeting, the kitchen linoleum tiles and the foyer parquet. Our stairway and adjacent stair rail was dated and not up to current code so that was removed and replaced by Marvin and his "stair specialist" associate. He disposed of all discarded debris. We provided most of the materials (flooring, underlayment patch, mouldings, spindles, newels, stair treads, stain.) The uneven underlayment was also leveled; one 'soft' spot was removed and replaced with new underlayment. Having a ranch with a 'daylight' basement, we opted to have the flooring nailed wherever possible. The small basement level stair landing was "floated" / glued. The job went smoothly and the few glitches were remedied by Marvin without any problem. All our removed baseboard mouldings were replaced; the original, removed ones were damaged and caked with old paint. The "glitches": -Because EcoTimber does not make coordinating bamboo stair treads, we used oak to replace the pine 2 X 12 we uncovered beneath the old stair carpeting. The wood grains and colors of oak and our bamboo did not match. Although we could not remedy the wood grain, Marvin mixed and matched stains and finishes to closely resemble the tones of the new flooring. It took an entire weekend to completely redo the stairs (replacement of stringers, risers and treads) and the small protective stair rail at the top edge. Marvin advised us to shop at some of the local salvage stores for the stair spindles and newels; we saved some money this way. -Although the floor was nailed in the living areas, the perimeter pieces are glued. Some glue oozed up and was trekked onto the main sections of the finished floor. Although he was able to remove the glue, the finish / shine was mottled. Marvin sealed our floor with two coats of Bona Kemi "Traffic" giving an even shine throughout floor. -A plank at the top of the stairs was noticeably upraised at one point. Marvin secured it to the floor by drilling holes through the wood, countersinking screws and then hiding the holes with plugs made from remnant flooring. This clever repair is virtually unnoticeable. -Our home was built in 1983 and has the original oak kitchen cabinets. Marvin replaced the worn cabinet kickboards with pieces of our new flooring; it all matches and is easy to keep clean. -Marvin made custom thresholds out of the flooring. He had carpet installers come and tack the carpet under his new pieces.

Talked a good talk, gauged floors with buffer-sander, used several different varnishes almost like whatever he had left, did not show up when he said, was told not to come back on the property then while no one was home came back to finish at 10:30pm. Very uncomfortable with this man.

Response from Ashburns Custom Floors
This home was built sometime in the 1920-1940 era in the woods near a lake in Hendersonville, N.C. using "Long Leaf Heart Pine" flooring. As best we could tell the floor had been sanded and finished one time and was worn from years of hard use. Our company bid to buff and recoat over the existing finish using 1 coat of "PARKS" procoat sealer and 2 coats of "FABULON" oil modified polyurethane. The project began on the 2nd floor with buffing using a worn 100 grit screen and then applying the sealer. A problem arose-- a chemical reaction took place the sealer wrinkled. I showed our client the problem and came to an agreement to sand the 2nd floor since we have no control over what cleaning products or finishes may have caused this problem. This in-tern created additional work and extended the completion scheudle. Upon comlpeting the 2nd floor and stairs our company started the !st floor buff and recoat using a different technique which included adding a special additive called "PRO COAT" directly to the "FABULON" poly The finish did not wrinkle only one more problem HIGH HUMIDITY caused the floor to go thru "haze and blush" .Buff the floor and recoat again Our schedule is dead in the winter and very busy spring summer fall And the extra work to correct these problems ment we must work long hours. Yes we worked on our client's residence until 10:30 pm I don't recall this being against her wishes....for which if this offended I'am sorry. Our company and I have always attempted to provide the best products and service in the industry I personally am a NWFA (Natioal Wood Flooring Assoc.) trained flooring inspector held to a higher standard than most in the industry. This project was completed several years ago... I am just now responding... the truth be told I don't type well and honestly dislike computers Should anyone desire additional details regarding this floor feel free to call 828-768-6326 ask for Marvin Ashburn

In both instances he and his crew have been unfailingly polite, clean and quiet. Marvin holds himself to high standards and expects the same from the men who work for him. You will receive a detailed, written estimate prior to the start of the job and that is what you will pay at the end of the job. When unanticipated work changes do occur, he will tell you the pros and cons of work he proposes and how much the additional work will cost. I highly recommend this gentleman.
Description of Work: I have used this company for two projects. In April 2006 he repaired and refinished the hardwood floors in my house. In August 2007 I did not hesitate for a minute to have him return to install hardwood flooring in a room being renovated.
