Description of Work: Purchased big deal. Set up appointment with vendor after lengthy conversation about days he would be in Charlotte. Left work early to meet him and he called me asking for directions. I didn't recognize the street name -he said he was in Asheville. I said I live in Charlotte (Asheville is 2 hours away). He apologized and said I remember talking to you about when I would be in Charlotte. He just called me and left a voicemail saying when I had to meet with him because he would be in the area next. Call me crazy, but I'm under the impression I am allowed to choose a time that works for me.

(deleted member name), I am committed to helping homeowners in need. Sorry for my miscue on the house location the day of our appointment. Please accept the apology note that I delivered to your house on Tuesday. I saw that your older house has a crawl space which is usually a source of troublesome issues. I hope you accept my offer to do a thorough inspection of the crawl space at no charge. My policy is to always do something extra for those who ask for my help. Sincerely, Rick Bayless 828-243-5192.

Not helpful in our case.
Description of Work: Rick is very personable and arrived on time. However, Rick is an inspector and doesn't do basement water repairs. Couldn't recommend anyone to us who does. Wasn't very helpful to us in our case.

[member name removed], I keep myself removed from the fix to maintain a non-sales, objective, broader, and different view of your situation. I may spot an overlooked piece of the puzzle for you. Sometimes I may just be confirming that your projects are already on track. It may help to just play "Devil's advocate" to help you thoroughly confirm your plans especially if you are about to undertake an expensive and disruptive project. There was little left to do with surface water corrections since you thought that through very well and already addressed many of those items. You are left with the more disruptive and expensive step of excavating at the front wall and applying treatments to the wall exterior as you already surmised. The price quote one company rep. gave you on letting the water invade the wall and removing the water after it's passed through the wall doesn't make sense. Allowing the soil outside to remain wet encourages termites. Of even greater concern is that a wet wall will supply dampness to the top plate above causing new trouble to the wooden framing system of the house. The quote from the other contractor made more sense. The excavation outside and strong seal of the wall exterior should help a great deal with keeping the wall system dry. However, leave out their suggestion to also seal the wall interior. That measure assumes that the outside will fail. If it does fail, that inner seal will prevent you from confirming the failure early on before much damage is done. Allow for inspect-ability from the inside of the wall area after your fix to confirm continued success of the fix. Consider my suggestion to sink a sump pump well at the wall exterior while the area is already opened up. Since there is nowhere to drain ground water away from the corner should the worse happen ( a feed of water to the wall-face from underground sources ) it will be helpful to be able to slip in a sump pump to prevent an accumulation of underground water up against the wall below grade. Since there was little else I could share in this situation at this stage, I cut my minimum inspection fee in half for you. I do my best to help keep dollars in your pocket for you to put toward the fixes you need to implement next.

I am pleased that you have given my service to you such high marks. Happy to know that you've been using what we reviewed so far in making some of the helpful low-cost repairs. As you learned it wasn't that hard to find and fix the fallen air duct. Your choice for do-it-yourself methods of fixing things is a common choice these days. I am always here to guide you through your projects or to help you get it done if you need help. See you at my Heat/Cool class on March 8. Rickk Bayless
