Mr. Clifford was a complete professional. First, he owns large excavation equipment and was able to do a thorough job of re-contouring our land so that we had proper water drainage near the end of our driveway. We have had contractors come who took on jobs that were too big and really struggled with the final product because they didn't have the right equipment- this wasn't the case with Mr. Clifford.
Our property has a slope down to the road and requires a drainage pipe under the end of the driveway to channel water down the rest of the hill. It had been 30 years since the channel was originally dug, so the pipe was higher than the current flow of water in the ditch- which ended up just pooling (the mosquitoes loved it) after every storm. Mr. Clifford removed the top layer of gravel from that portion of the driveway, removed the old (and partially crushed) metal pipe, dug and graded the trench to accept a new pvc pipe, and re-graveled the top. We have since had a heavy thunderstorm and the water moved like a swift stream, straight down to the neighborhood collection system. He then added a beautiful stone veneer to the edge of the pipe so that it looks high-end and finished, which is nice since it's the first thing you see. It used to be just the razor-sharp end of the crushed corrugated pipe- so this treatment is a lot safer around children.
We also needed to replace the original yard light, which had collapsed, and the mailbox post that was heavily leaning. Neither had proper concrete footings, so Mr. Clifford dug new holes and poured concrete footings and removed the old pieces. He assembled and attached the new light from start to finish. Now, the new lamp and mailbox posts are solid and properly anchored (and will hopefully stand up to our snowblower for many winters).
All of this was done while we were on vacation. He said that we would be pleased, and we were (unlike 8/10 of the contractors we have used in the last 4 years). I think he has an artistic vision and works diligently to see that vision come to fruition. Most of the folks we have hired have used the "it's good enough" metric- which ends up looking amateurish but at a premium price. This cost of this job wasn't cheap, but it was fair. We were truly delighted with the end result.
