My well pump began frequently cycling. I had a qualified excavator who was working part time for me while seeking wemployment in town. We borrowed a neighbor's backhoe and dug to the well base and pressure tested the pipe which told us that the leak was upsteam. We then excavated the irrigation stantion and pressure tested the system again and found the leak was further upsteam. We excavated the pipes that formed the union going into the house and the garage. We located the junction. At this point my hired man felt uneasy about dealing with pipes which went into buildings (he had previously worked for a well company.) At this point we called 4G's. They came rapidly and immediately assumed that the problem lay in the galvanized steel pipes that went to the garage and house. We showed them our pressure tester and suggested that they pressure test the lines before doing anything. They would have had to rethread one of the pipes. They refused. They broadened the excavation tearing a hole in the sewer and disrupting the cable tv line. (All lines had been previously located before we started digging). Their operator said he had never seen PVC pipe break so the problem had been galvanized pipe. So they jackhammered the concrete in the garage and used the existing pipe to pull through a PVC pipe that met current code. The existing galvanized pipe was totally without problems. Had they rethreaded the pipe and pressure tested it, they would have known it was fine. They then pressure tested the house and it too was fine. They pressure tested downsteam to find there was a leak between the irrigation stanchion and the house. Now the entire backyard looked like and bomb went off. The question was whether to bring the house up to code with PVC as they had gone that far, so I elected to do so as I didn't want to have to do this again. So I agreed. It proved to be much more extensive than projected as the builder had used swing joints under the foundation ,and it required over 8 feet of excavation and significant hand digging through the peagravel base under the foundation. This disrupted a carefully planned drainage system. Then once this was done once again having to jackhammer out the basement and re-cement, the actual replacement of the leaking pipe between the house and the irrigation stanchion had to be performed. We are now days into this project which should have been replacing the pipe between the house and the stanchion if the lines had been pressure tested. During this excavation, the electrical system between the well and wellcontroller and pressure tank was cut as the lines had been buried at varying depths The sewer pipe also was disrupted..The trench was left open over the weekend, and we had used water from the previous line which had been hooked to the new line while they took the weekend off.We had to fence it off from the horses. I went down Saturday morning to find the trench full of water where the original. PVC pipe had broken. There was no choice but to replace this 300 feet of pipe.Over the next several days the six foot trench was dug from the house to the irrigation stanchion, hitting the electrical supply line and cable line at known and unknown places. The water line was replaced with proper bedding, now we had to replace 500 feet of triple strand heavy duty copper electrical wire from the garage to the barn controller as it was impossible to know where the breaks all were. This was done placing the wire at 2 feet deep in conduit. By now the cable tv line had been hit 4 times and had to be replaced. The cable company billed 4G's $400 which they put on my bill. They kindly sent me a bill for over $12,000. At that point I lost it, and I was reminded by my hired man that if they had done what we asked re: pressure testing instead of assuming the pipes were corroded without proof it would have been between $3000 to $5000 max, and we actually could have done it ourselves even further reducing the cost. I called and spoke to the owner at 4'G and complained about the charges and performance. He was totally oblivious to the major inconvenience his workers had caused us, their errors in judgment and excavation which lead to the powerline problems. He continually complained about how if he adjusted the bill, they would be incurring a loss. His replies were that problems happen. Finally they adjusted the bill down to $8000, most probably because they didn't want to go to court over it. I would never use them again nor could I every recommend they to anyone else.
