Mike Hagen (and all of his crew) are hands down the BEST contractors to work with. Mike is such a down to earth guy, and was so accommodating to build our house the way we wanted it! Even after the house was finished, he has been so responsive in coming to help us figure out the quirks of it all. I HIGHLY recommend him! The next home we build will definitely be a Hagen Construction house!

I can't believe how easy he was and is to work with. His flexibility in meeting our needs was crucial in us being able to build our house. Start to finish time was shorter than he projected even with weather delays. We truly felt as though we were at the top of his list. He kept us well informed of the progress and would often check in to insure that the final product would be as expected. When it was time for us to pick out flooring, cabinets, appliances, and counter-tops he did not push us towards any one brand or supplier, but did offer ideas when we asked for his advice. He is a very realistic person and will not say whatever just to get your business. He is very honest and a pleasure to do business with. We have been living in our house since December of 2013 and he continues to check in on us and address any concerns we have. This was our first experience in building a home and I really cant believe how well it went. I would recommend Hagen Construction to anyone looking to build a home. This review may sound to good to be true, I know there is another review on here that is quite the opposite of mine. In business or life there is no such thing as perfection and any relationship, whether business or personal is a 2-way street. Some people are never satisfied and always want something for nothing. I don't know the specifics of the other reviewer of Hagen Construction that gave him an and quot;Fand quot; rating, but I expected a quality product for a fair price with good customer service, and that is exactly what I got from Mike Hagen.

Hagen Construction definitely went above and beyond on the building of our home. We were short on time, due to the sale of our previous home, and Mike and his crew went out of their way to complete our new home by the date that we needed. Mike always answered all questions and phone calls quickly. We have called on him several times over the past four years with questions concerning on-going and any future projects and all responses have been immediate, polite and helpful. Quality workmanship, efficient and knowledgeable service and a beautiful home! We are very satisfied with the work that Mike has done for us and we have and will continue to highly recommend Hagen Construction to others.

Hagen Construction went above and beyond to build a custom home for my husband and I. Having the opportunity to walk through a finished home that his crew built in 2007, we knew that if we decided to build we would use Hagen Construction. We started our home search in winter of 2013 and everything that we walked through was built so poorly, that we quickly gave up and began to just search for land. My husband and I reached out to Mike to let him know that we interested in working with him to build our home but we were trying to find land. Over a few phone calls he had gotten a feel for what we were looking for and made a few suggestions of areas for us to look at. We found and purchased our land in May/June of 2013. For the next few weeks Mike worked patiently with us as we went thru many house plans, with all his experience he was able to guide us with our choices. Mike and his crew broke ground July 2013 with an estimated completion date of Dec 2013.We went out to our home almost every night to see the process, it was amazing to see these guys work. Even with many changes that we decided to make or add our home was done on time. My husband had been in construction and carpentry before and saw nothing but quality work being done from everyone in the crew. We were both impressed that Mike and his crew worked everyday including weekends, as long as the weather was cooperative. Mike was also great at organizing all the sub-contractors and making sure they were here on time and on schedule. It was evident that Mike used the same sub-contractors on a regular basis and there work was also as fantastic. We were also happy that although we had made some changes and made some upgrades, we stayed within budget. We have been in the house for almost 5 months and couldn't be happier with the way the house came out. We love it so much that we are going to use Hagen construction in the future to build our dream garage for our growing muscle car collection. As you can see my husband wrote the last line, if we win the lottery than we have Mike build the garage.

Hagen Construction went above and beyond on our house build. I worked with Mike Hagen from the initial planning phase of my custom build and throughout the process Mike was patient and willing to work with me on all the details. Mike walked my family through a build he completed and answered any and all questions on construction. He then went out of his way to visit different land plots as potential home locations and discussed best build strategies. Once I lined up the land for our dream home. Mike sat down with my wife and I to go over the build contract in depth. He thoroughly covered all aspects of the build and how he would work with us throughout the entire process. I We broke ground in June 2012 with a project completion date set for 31 Oct 2012. During the build phase, we stayed in our Fifth Wheel onsite and got to watch the build process. Nightly we would come home to a hard days work. Mike and his team worked professionally and went out of there way to keep us informed on what was needed as I was the plan designer and Mike always stayed on top of what items we wanted as well as the schedule. The construction had numerous weather delays, which were out of the builders hand. Mike had his crew (Derrick, Nick, and Justin) working on the Fourth of July and weekends to stay track with the schedule. All the team members worked hard to get the build right and I never heard a complaint. During the build Mike introduced me to his preferred sub contractors for electric, plumbing, heating, insulation, and dry-wall. He had set a group of high quality and timely professionals. I met with each sub contractor and discussed what I wanted in our new home. All were professional and I could tell Mike trusted them to do a great job. As the designer, I had a few idea changes and minor flaws in my original build plan which Mike and Derrick worked with me to over come. If the change required added cost Mike was upfront with me and let me know before we went on. I don't believe other builders are as easy to work with or accommodating as Mike. Derrick also work with me to add brick to my house that wasn't in the original plan. Derrick worked off hours and additional weekends to complete the fireplace and house front brick. The build was completed on time 31 Oct 2012 and surpassed our expectations. I would strongly recommend Hagen Construction for any build. Mike works hard to build you what you want and will if something doesn't go right he will work to get it fixed. Truly satisfied customer.

House was finished on time for the bank and myself. Any subsequest repairs of wear and tear work have been cheerfully done at no cost. Hagen Construction gave me my house to retire to which was affordable and now low maintaince. I work out of town and I enjou coming home to my bit of heaven. I have no complaints. The owner of Hagen Construction is quick to respond to questions and concerns . I value his opinion and his crew are always polite, knowledgeable and get the work done. I am having the basement finished soon and the only company I will consider is Hagen Construction to do the job.
Description of Work: Laid and poured foundations, built walls, installed all plumbing, electrical and finished interior and exterior and did the roofing . Hagen Construction built my entire house and then sloped land so moisture runs away. Hagen Construction oversaw the drilling of the well too. Hagen also put in the road and later came back and smoothed out the bumps from a winter's worth of wear and tear.

We were extremely happy with the services provided by Hagen Construction. Mike and his team went out of their way to make our dream home. During the building process, a friend of ours came by and observed the quality of work and contracted Hagen Construction to build a large shop for him. Our friend was also very happy with the finished product. Our family has nothing but great things to say about the quality of workmanship as well as the friendliness of Mike, Derrick and the crew. If you are looking for a wonderful home, with a great price, contact these guys. You will not regret it.

Hagen Construction returned every call. They worked directly with R.W. AND me- addressed all out concerns ; and indeed despite not always agreeing on some specific preferences my husband had as the contractor- all problems had reasonable and acceptable solutions for any problems. We did NOT address any issues to his crew but to Mike himself. That is what you hire him for. No construction site is "safe" or clean- that is totally unreasonable- you can't have it both ways. Some days the crew pushed beyond any "cleanup" time; and yes it was left a "mess" ay 9PM to be continued at 6 a.m. If I felt the need to see a cleaner, safer floor- I had no problem clearing a path for myself. I was just as anxious as the next person to see my new home completed as soon as possible; BUT I did not take it personally when two hours a day was NOT 'wasted' trying to present a safe haven for a show -and-tell for all my friends to come and gawk or criticize. Everyone has a different perception of what a 'contractor' does- even in what they "feel" a contract allows them privileges to demand. That is sad because Mr. Hagen has always been fair, reasonable, accountable, responsible and reachable to us. I would not hesitate to call upon his services again, be it a fence, a roof , or full new house construction.
Description of Work: Hagen Construction has done three jobs for us-starting in 2005 thru 2012- our own custom home, a custom shop and some additional fencing for livestock and animal control. The largest was our personal home construction which involved working directly with our own custom drawn plans ,drawn to our own specific specifications. Anything not considered "stock" was discussed and made to meet the needs of a diabetic husband. All heavy work(,i.e. framing, roofing, drywall ) was done through Mike Hagen and his crew. Montana weather will always throw a curve and no one who has ever built a home can expect "immediate results" without taking in all considerations- be it other trades like plumbers or electricians that also could throw a job off schedule. This being our 4th home from scratch- perhaps we were better prepared for the realities- be it banks and their personal agendas forced on the client- or anxious new homeowners pushing beyond reasonable expectations.

This project was no where near what we had expected from a and quot;custom home builderand quot;. Mike was good in working with us to come up with a plan that fit us. There was a lot of back and forth changes on the design and he was good about getting back to us promptly. Our father in law and also several from the local builder supply store warned us about his work, but unfortunately we ignored the warnings. We were very specific about possible change orders in the future, such as finishing the basement and adding some extra gas plumbing fixtures and additional rock work etc. Once we signed the negotiated contract, things began to change. There was a slight rain delay in the beginning so he wasn't able to start right away which we understood. He began excavating on May 16, 2011. We immediately began noticing some sloppiness in his work. The job site was always a mess with cans, bottles and tools scattered everywhere. We would sometimes pick up from them at the end of the day. There were some gaps in the footings between the house and garage that we had to have him fix. We and our families enjoyed going out in the evening to check the progress as we were extremely excited to have a new house. Not a month into the construction process, we received an email from Mike that our father in law was bugging them and that he basically needed to stay away. We respected his wishes and asked everyone to not spend too much time out at the house so as not to interfere with the workers. At the same time, it being our house felt that anyone we wanted to be there could be there at any time. Things went downhill from there. During the framing process we didn't like the layout of the bathroom so we asked him to change it and he was fine with that and didn't charge us extra. However we had to ask them to fix numerous things involving the framing that we didn't feel we should have to point out to the general contractor. He left the stairs to the basement unfinished and a giant hole in the floor until some of the subs began working on plumbing, HVAC and electrical. It was quite a hazard for us and our 2 year old son. The wrong trusses were installed, after we pointed it out he admitted the mistake and ordered the correct ones and fixed them. However, we wonder if he would have covered it up if we hadn't noticed it. Even the truss company was appalled when they saw the pictures. I understand a mistake, but don't lie about it and try to see if you can get away with it. We would ask him to do things and he would ignore us and do it the way he wanted to. When I asked him to paint the ceilings in the closets different from the walls i received yet another email complaining. One day i had asked one of the crew a simple question, the next day i received another email asking us not to talk to the crew and to direct all questions through him. I believe my question was and quot;do they do 2 coats of paint?and quot;. I didn't feel that was a difficult question that only the general contractor could answer. We asked him not to put piles of rocks in certain places and he would pile them there anyway. I wanted rocks only half way up the fireplace and because he forgot to frame the wall, he rocked it to the ceiling which I specifically didn't want. It seemed that our concerns were never listened to or taken seriously. We had to specifically ask him to hang the exterior doors because it was going to storm that night and didn't want the sheetrock getting ruined and delaying us any further. We didn't feel we should have to ask that, it should be something that our general contractor would think of and take care of. We've lived in the house 6 months now and have always smelled natural gas in our house. We assumed it may have been from a furnace vent. However my husband went to look at the vent to our gas fireplace and found it had been mashed down instead of installed properly, so it was blocking the air flow thus causing our house to fill with gas. It is so frustrating to keep finding these hidden mistakes and are constantly wondering what we will find next. And also to wonder if the house is truly safe to live in. The deadline for the project was August 15th, so we locked our interest rate with the bank because MIke assured me that it would be finished. However, August 15th blew by and we were no where near complete. They would disappear for a week at a time with no word on the schedule or when they would be back. We later found out he was working on his own house and other spec houses at the same time as ours. Luckily the bank was able to extend our lock without penalty for another month. However the 2nd expiration date came and went and we were still not complete. So we began to push Mike as the bank was getting frustrated too. He would write emails about how stressed he and his crew were not giving consideration to the fact that we were soon to be homeless. Finally towards the end we told him he had 2 weeks to get everything done. Instead of opting to finish his job, he chose to forgo his final payment and walk away leaving us to finish his work. He left the driveway unfinished, a non working gas fireplace, half covered drain field, deck stairs with one railing, interior paint to touch up, exterior doors to paint, unfinished venting and final grading work. He was extremely unprofessional. At one point telling me in an email and quot;that we all knew who wore the pantsand quot;. And a few months after the completion, we heard he had been talking about our house and our father in law to his banker. He told us that the reason for the delays was because of our change orders. We had been completely up front in the beginning about all the change orders we might expect. The only un-forseen change orders involved the plumbing and some custom trim work we ordered. We ordered custom trim and interior doors and Mike had offered to have some one come unload the trailer when it arrived on a Saturday. However, yet again he didn't keep his word and there I was helping unload a trailer full of doors and trim after recently having back surgery. The quality of work was mediocre. We grew tired of having to point things out to correct or remind him of things we had previously asked of him. It was such an exhausting process that we felt could have gone so much more smoothly and turned unnecessarily nasty. The constant lies and ignoring promised schedules were not what we should have had to deal with from an and quot;experiencedand quot; builder. We later found out he was not part of the Home Builders Association which also should have been a red flag for us. We ignored too many warnings and should have done a lot more research on them before we signed such a big contract. 4/9/11 Update: We began work on the yard, Mike was supposed to have the plumber stub out for the sprinkler system. And surprise surprise, it wasn't done. We paid for it, but do you think this guy would follow through on anything.
Description of Work: We looked at one of Mike's spec houses with our realtor and were interested in the house but wanted to make some changes to the floor plan so we began talking to him about building a similar plan for us on a different lot. He worked with us to come up with a 1540 square foot plan for a custom home which he began building May of 2011. He did some excavating work and also installed our septic system. A year later we have discovered that what we though was a "custom home" is no longer customer as he has copied our plans and is building the same house in a several other subdivisions. Our review is by no means all inclusive, there were so many issues that we chose to include the more alarming issues to include. And I'm sure there will be many updates as we are still finding issues that we weren't aware of. Warning: Stay away from this guy!
