Well, drilled and hooked up quicker than expected, to anticipated depth, bill came in less than estimate. Now, three years later my well quit due to an electrical problem from the previous well's wiring. I got ahold of Dustin and he helped me troubleshoot the problem over the phone. Turned out to be a control box that was installed on the old well (not H & L's well), but still in use since it was fairly modern components. Dustin told me what component to replace and viola, all is well. An inexpensive and quick fix. Thank you Dustin.

Great. They were professional, personable , respected our property and asked very direct questions about our property and needs. We could certainly tell they have dug many wells. Very knowledgable and made suggestions so we could make an informed decisions. Communication was seamless between ourselves, contractors and neighbors. We have great water and they even hit it a little sooner than the "neighborhood bets" predicted ultimately saving time and money. Thanks for the great experience!

After the dirt work had been completed the neighbor notified Shawn that his site was only 40' from his drain field and therefore unusable. I told Shawn that I did not consider it unreasonable for him to pickup half the cost of the dirt work. He refused saying it was my fault. My mistake was trusting this driller implicitly.
Description of Work: Shawn was asked about drilling a water well on my property. After meeting him there to review the possibility, he said it could be done and recommended a site which would require extensive excavation. The site he recommended was right next to the property line. So I hired an excavator who performed the dirt work for a platform needed to support the drilling rig as Shawn had required.

Response from H & L Drilling Inc
August 5th, 2015 On July 6, 2015 I was contacted my Mr. for a well consultation at his property at 2771 West Shore Dr. Helena, MT. I met with Mr. on location July 7th 2015. Mr. was looking at a well site down by his cabin; I told him we would have to build a road down to the site to get the drill rig in. I told Mr. that this site was not 100’ from his drain field. I then suggested to Mr. that we look at a site on the West side of his property behind his garage. I told Mr. that this location was 100 from his drain field but I did not know where the neighbor’s septic system was located. I told Mike to let me know when he made a decision as to what he wanted to do. On the morning of July 20th I was mobilizing my drill rig into a well location for a client close to Mr.. I saw that the pad had been constructed for Mr., I stuck a flag in the well location. When I came back to the shop I called Mr. to ask him to verify the well location. He told me he didn’t need to because the pins were all there. On my second trip out I was mobilizing the support truck into position next to the drill rig. Mr.’ neighbor came over to talk to me. He told me that the well location for Mr. was only 40’ away from his drain field and he had informed Mr. several times where his drain field was. (We have proof of this) I called Mr. when I came back to the office to let him know that his neighbor had informed me that the drill pad was only 40’ from his drain field. Mr. asked me if we could still drill the well in that location, I told him my recommendation would be not to drill the well there. I told Mr. that if we drilled the well there it could cause problems for him and his neighbor both. If the neighbors septic failed the county would probably make Mr. abandon his the well. I also mentioned to Mr. that if we drilled the well there he would have a hard time if he ever wanted to sell the property. I suggested to Mr. that he could go to the county and request a variance to get approval for the close proximity of the well with the neighbor’s septic system so it would be legal. Mr. came to my office on July 21, 2015 and was upset because he thought I should bear some of the responsibility for selecting a viable well location and he wanted me to pay for ½ of his $800 charge for excavation. I told Mr. that his neighbor told me that he told Mr. several times and the excavator that the drill pad was only 40’ from his drain field. Mr. said “when”. Mr. told me that I didn’t do my due diligence in selecting the well location. I told Mr. that it is not my responsibility to know the impediments of his property. He told me he would see me in court. When I meet with a client to select a well location it is the responsibility of the property owner to give me the pertinent information I need to know concerning his property so I can choose a location that is in accordance with the rules. I have no way of knowing what the impediments are for a client’s property. Septic systems are not constructed with components that can be located. like other utilities. The only person or persons who know the location of a septic system is the property owner or possibly the septic installer. I am a licensed professional with the state of Montana as a Water Well Driller and Contractor and have been for the last 30+ years. In the last 30+ years of being a professional in the water well business I have worked with thousands of clients and drilled thousands of wells; this is the first time in my career that I have had a client that willfully and blatantly withheld pertinent information from me concerning their property. The fact still remains that Mr. knew the location of the neighbors drain field and did not pass that information on to me.

Our well at a rental property had stopped working. H&L Drilling has done a lot of work for us in the past so I called them. They arrived the same day, and diagnosed and fixed the problem without any further issues.

THey did a great job. Obviously, with the Bakken play happening right now, steel pipe isn't exactly cheap, and we could have drilled an "adequate" well for (shallower) a bit cheaper but we wanted to never have to go through this again. They were in touch often during the drilling process to tell us what they were finding. We ended up with a great well -40 gallons per minute, probably one of the best in our area of the Helena Valley. Obviously, when drilling that deep you need a larger and more expensive pump, and a whole lot of pipe, but the guys who drilled the well found the water amount increasing as they approached the depth limit we'd previously set with them, and by going a bit less than 50 feet below our pre-set limit, our water output doubled. They are always in demand, so we had to wait a while for them to show up, drill the well, and install the pump (the whole process took almost a month). For that, I'm giving them a B, but looking back, it seems like it was a short time. I suppose if someone is intending to maintain golf course lawn they might get frazzled having to wait that long, but we aren't the kind to lose sleep over our lawn as long as it's there for the kids to run on (I find it baffling why people try to maintain ultra green thick lawns in an area such as Helena that is essentially a desert. But I digress...) The crews worked out there in blazing heat, in rain, even with some lightning in the area. They never gave up. THey showed up early and were very considerate and polite. They even put up with some rookie questions on my part. The drill crew was especially good to work with - - very very hardworking guys. The only thing that I found interesting was that we weren't really consulted on the size of the pump that we should get. I assume that is only because when you are drilling down to a certain depth, you need to go with a certain size of pump. Anyways, they seem to have figured out the exact pump we needed because we haven't had problems in the three months since the well was completed. They were a bit less than punctual us our well log paperwork so that we could file for our water rights - it seemed like it took over a month, but seeing as how they had a drilling rig tip over shortly after drilling our well and they were at the peak of the drilling season, I guess I should cut them some slack. All in all, I was delighted with the work that H&L did for us, and would recommend them to anyone without reservation. I'm glad we went with them.
Description of Work: They came and drilled a new well for us and did a great job at that. The prior well had been drilled by "Treasure State Drilling" and wasn't done with any attention to quality., or with accuracy in terms of the well log (soils encountered). I suppose that would explain why the "Treasure State" shysters were out of business. H&L drilled a new well for us (700 feet - - ack!!), installed a pump, and did all of the wiring work. They finished the site by leveling it and removing some of the material that was blown out of the well.

Initially they were a little stand-offish when first called (perhaps because this was for a rental property), but once on site they were very professional and resolved the issue quickly. In the end we were very pleased with their work.
