Outstanding experience. From start to finish Pete was great. Scheduling an appointment that worked for me was not a problem. Due to severe weather Pete called me a half hour before the scheduled time and said he was running 15 minutes late (we live about 20 miles outside of Bozeman). Pete laid down cloths around the hearth and explained to me the process and what the inspection and cleaning provided. Using the latest equipment Pete cleaned the firebox, damper and chimney with ZERO dust or mess. He uses a HEPA ultra fine dust filter on his shop vac and left the hearth and surround spotless with no trace of dust or soot anywhere. We burn about three cords of Douglas Fir each winter and Pete explained that we probably should have the chimney cleaned every two years but that could call for an inspection every year if we wanted, or if we found oursleves burning closer to five or six cords. Immediately after completion of the cleaning, Pete provided a thorough inspection report via email. He asked me about our smoke and CO2 alarm system and where our fire extinguishers were to complete the safety aspect of the report. Finally, Pete is a very nice guy and very concerned that his customers are more than completely satisifed with his work. Highly recommended.

We had a pretty bad chimney fire, we called the fire dept and they were able to put it out. It turns out that the Mason chimney had cracked and because of the age of the wood stove and the way it was put in ages ago, it needed to be replaced. I called Big Sky Chimney that afternoon and made an appointment with Pete the very next day. Pete was very knowledgeable about what could and couldn't be done by EPA standards. I was informed why the chimney was building up creosote very quickly (too many bends) why it was important to use smaller pipe (the cost is way less) and why I needed to get an EPA endorsed woodstove (they burn way more efficiently). I was very comfortable since Pete gave me all the information I was unsure about and didn't rush the consultation. It was very nice that he listened to all my concerns and questions. The parts came quickly and I was very pleased with Pete's work ethic. He was very conscientious. He arrived and got right to work. He worked with one other gentleman and they both did a great job of putting in the new stove, pipe and even told me I had a problem with my roof (too many layers of roof shingles I didn't even know were up there). I was glad he was honest with what he saw so I could get the issue taken care off soon. They cleaned the work mess both days they were here. I really appreciated how considerate they both were. Before leaving, he started a fire and explained everything I needed to know. I couldn't have been more pleased with the job Pete did! I did have two other Businesses come out and do an estimate. I didn't feel comfortable with either one of them. My home is more important that 15 minutes of time to "check things out". I would highly recommend Big Sky Chimney for all chimney needs. They are very knowledgeable with what they do. I couldn't be more pleased! I will definitely use them for all of my future chimney sweeps and needs.

Pete and his employee performed the cleaning and installation to a very high standard with regard to function and appearance. Pete was timely with both communication and execution of the work. Pete's price came in below his estimate including more work (cap installation) than we had discussed. Pete was respectful of the property, left the job site clean, and I will hire him for any and all chimney related jobs in the future. Thanks Pete!
Description of Work: Pete Richardson installed firebrick in the preexisting stone fireplace, in addition to installing a cap and cleaning two chimneys.

Pete may be an excellent chimney sweep, but his ability to source and install any fireplace equipment is null. He proceeded to sell us a stove insert which he completely misrepresented. He said it would heat a certain amount of space upon inspection of the stove and doing some online research of the model the truth was it heated half the space he stated. When we requested he remove the stove and for our deposit back, it took 3 weeks to remove it and another two weeks for our deposit to be returned. When he returned the deposit, he kept $700 for his labor and has yet to refund the full amount of our deposit.

Response from Big Sky Chimney
Exact cost of job was $4434.14. If regular retail price was charged it would have been closer to $5500. The insert that was initially sold was $1999.00 ($500 off retail) had dimensions from the manufacturer’s spec sheet that incorrect. When we went to install the insert, it didn’t fit. After researching dimensions of insert models for him, it became apparent that there was only 1 unit that would fit. We ordered the unit from a local hearth retailer with a 2 week lead time. The cost of the unit was $2443.00. We were still honoring the agreed upon $1999.00 and taking a $444.00 loss in an effort to keep the customer happy. The local hearth retailer we purchased the unit from stated that the stove would heat 1400-1600 square feet. I quoted the hearth retailers square footage specification to [Member name removed] which was incorrect. It’s not often that we have to use hearth retailers but due to the extremely small fireplace height there was only one unit manufactured in North America that would fit their firebox. The unit was only available through another hearth dealer who reps the product. The fireplace insert heated 1,000 square feet, not the retailer/rep’s quoted square footage of 1400-1600. This specification was misrepresented to me, and was NOT intentionally misrepresented to [Member name removed]. In regards to time frame and dates, we received an email from [Member name removed] on March 6, 2014 stating: “My wife and I are definitely in agreement that the current one will not me our needs and is not worth the price tag.” [Member name removed] initially stated that he wanted to heat the living room, kitchen, and dining room. The unit installed is the only available option for their fireplace due to its very low height. This assessment comes from several hours of research and also from several hearth dealers we spoke with in an effort to find additional options. We removed the unit and re-installed their fireplace doors on Friday March 7th. On Monday March 10th, I contacted [Member name removed] with an explanation of charges. We were invoicing $195.00 for cleaning his fireplace and chimney prior to the install, and that was all we had for his invoice at that time. I explained to him that we were taking a significant loss of $4000+ for the materials and labor for this job. In an attempt to find a reasonable and fair solution, I asked [Member name removed] if we could come to a reasonable agreement for the loss. He stated without hesitation that he would be willing to “pay a day worth of labor”, as we had more than 2 full days for installation and removal. He said we could “split it”. This was [Member name removed] suggestion, not mine. I thanked him for his offer and let him know I would be bringing a refund check over in a few hours. I refunded their deposit within 4 hours (not 2 weeks) of speaking with [Member name removed] on Monday March 10th, 2014. A day or two later I received a call From [Member name removed] letting me know her displeasure with her husband’s decision to pay the days labor of $520.00. We have installed a variety of fireplace inserts, wood stoves, chimney liners and chimneys throughout Gallatin County without issue for more than 10 years. We are deeply apologetic as we never experienced a hearth dealer who misrepresented a products specification to us.
