Mr Hiebert (CJ) was highly recommended by his mother, a friend for several years, as a builder who was available to replace siding on my tornado damaged house in Baker, MT. I paid him to drive there and give me a quote. Two walls needed to be done. He quoted $5500 for one, or $7500 for both. I said that was high compared to what insurance assessed, so I'd just have to have one wall replaced with Smart Side. I'm familiar with other costs but hadn't ever had to replace siding before. He showed up a few days later with the paperwork to sign, delineating nothing, for a total of $8,266 for ONE WALL. I said whoa, you'll need to talk to my insurance co about this. How on earth do you justify an amount that should cover two walls, my missing fence and the painting which you aren't even doing? Well, "the cost of siding has gone way up from when I did my house," etc. Said if we waited for ins approval, it wouldn't get done during the nice weather we still had (mid November) and I finally agreed and paid him his huge up front demand. Then on the way out the door with my check, pointed out he had changed start date to after Thanksgiving. When he was finally done in first week of Dec the roads were closed and I couldn't go inspect while he kept demanding the rest of his money. It was a shoddy job with the cheapest of materials and patch work that didn't even have the grooves matched up. Trim pieces pieced together, not of wood but basically compressed sawdust, and for gouging me $5,000 more than subsequent quotes, hadn't even bought galvanized nails, which were punched In below surface, rusting, and leaving inner material exposed to weather. Also didn't caulk Windows as needed after trim pieces on, didn't use flashing where required on siding, nor any insulating foam. Walls were far better off had the cedar shakes and lap siding been left on, with the hits from heavy debris, than now. Must re do all of it.
