When the project first began the owner (Joe Slonaker) was onsite every day as promised to supervise the work and things went well. The construction was proceeding on schedule and I found him very accommodating. However, after receiving a progress payment for having the cabin "dried in", Joe left the site to pursue other business interests. Little to no work was performed for about a month, and when work began again the workers were unskilled and unlicensed creating several mistakes that later had to be fixed. At this time communications with the contractor became less frequent. In spite of frequent requests to talk to me weekly he only would communicate by email or text message. At one point his emails became threatening, calling me the worst customer he's every had ( because I was asking about what was going on at the construction site...I live 1400 miles away). He hired individuals without ever meeting them and had them do work without clear direction. Work continued for a couple months in this fashion with poor quality workmanship. He ordered his workers to not communicate with me or any of my neighbors. At various times he tried to shake me down for more money than I owed him, which I refused to pay until the project was completed...per the contract. He failed to pay the subs (I had to pay them directly) and did not pay some of his workers (in spite of signing a legal document claiming all subs and employees had been paid). The final product was flawed (I hired a professional to finish the work and do some rework), the wood floor was put in without my input as to the look and type of material (we don't like it). The bathroom door was installed not to the drawing making the kitchen countertops cut into the door frame. I had to pay a licensed plumber to fix what his workers had done as it did not meet the code and would not pass the inspection. I would never recommend this individual for construction work.
