Dent Turner Air Conditioning Sales

Description of Work: Dent Turner Air Conditioning Sales replaced the central heating and air conditioning system at my parents' house when my mother was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. We needed the house cleaned out and renovated to be safe for her during her treatment as the house had been neglected for 40 years. Dent Turner convinced me that he had a crew who could handle all of the renovations that were needed, and he provided a proposal with an estimate of the costs. Over the course of four months details of the project were changed by my parents which resulted in changes to the estimated costs. Verbal costs were provided, but formal change orders were never provided despite numerous requests for details. As Dent had been a family friend and for the sake of expedience, we allowed the work to continue trusting that we could settle everything at the end of the project. A week before the deadline for completing the work, it became apparent that the work could not be completed in time for my parents to move back into the house on time. This created a serious situation for my parents as they renting month-to-month at a senior living facility, and they had not renewed their arrangement. This delay cost my parents an additional $3,500. Before the project began we agreed that Dent would purchase the materials with his contractor discount, and he would be paid for the labor to install everything. I noticed in one of the invoices that he charged my parents three times the amount I would have paid retail for four doors he replaced. Other items were charged but never received or installed. There were other large expenses for which we have never received an explanation. Much of the work performed is good quality (carpentry, drywall, interior paint), but some of it was done very poorly (masonry, garage paint, flooring) despite the premium rate paid for the work. I asked repeatedly for a detailed accounting of the work throughout the project and after the work was completed. I was always assured everything would be made right. I have not heard from Dent in over a year. My parents were in no condition to manage this project, and I became incapacitated due to a neck injury around the time the project was originally supposed to be completed. This was the worst possible timing as I could not do quality assessment before the bills had to be paid. The total cost for all of the work including replacement of the HVAC was approximately $51,500. I suspect the actual bill should be about $8,000 less than that due to overcharges, work and materials that were never provided, duplicate charges, math errors, and shoddy workmanship that had to be re-done by someone else. I may never know what the actual difference is. Dent Turner does high quality air conditioning work, but I recommend getting firm pricing in writing in advance, and accept no changes prior to getting details in writing signed by both parties.
