Installation and pricing went well. They were prompt and kept everything clean. They even added freon to get us through a breakdown prior to installation. HOWEVER, on a Friday night a week after installation, company came in and said they smelled gas (we apparently had adapted because of the slowness of the leak). I had read some reviews that indicated others had had this problem, but the company professionalism led me to believe this would not be a concern. When I called about the leak, they indicated they could come Monday, but we obviously did not want to wait. We called the gas company and had it fixed. Afterward, I asked for the owner to call so that I could make sure he was aware of our experience and the other reviews, but no call. IF YOU USE THIS COMPANY, GET AN INDEPENDENT GAS INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION.

Very pleased. They called the day of saying they had overbooked and if we could reschedule. I told them my thermostat had stopped functioning over the weekend and they actually got someone out sooner than my original furnace maintenance appointment was schedule. The maintenance went smoothly. I had installed a new thermostat to replace my ancient 1980s one and it wasn't working. He figured out that the thermostat itself was faulty and he installed a new one from his supply. He even told me where to find rebates for it. He was personable and professional.

If it were possible, Chowning would be given negative stars. We hired them to do an inspection for fuel lines (gas/hvac) for a home we were going to buy. We had a house inspector in at the same time, so I wasn't watching the Chowning worker do his inspection, but then again, I shouldn't need to watch someone do a job they are trained to do and know how to do. He finds no leaks, but we also have no idea if he actually pressure tested anything or what system he uses to check these things. Our home inspector asks him what readings he got and he wouldn't say but said everything held pressure. We buy the house and because he says he found no issue, we do not have anything to negotiate or bring up with the sellers. Monday the 24th, I smell a lot of gas in the basement. After evacuating myself and a 70 year old and opening as many windows as possible, we leave and call Laclede who come out and find that there are at least 5 leak points in the gas lines and we now have no gas. Chowning starts out every conversation with they do not guarantee gas work. After multiple conversations, I am told that the owner will come out and repair two leaks for free, but anything more and the meter starts running. We already know there are more than two because laclede showed them and one is on the other side of the house. Because of an inspector who potentially didn't even do the proper testing, myself and my mother could have potentially gone to sleep and not woken up and any spark from there could have take out multiple houses inn the neighborhood. But because Chowning's owner doesn't want to do the right thing in this situation like a normal business owner would, this is what my time will be spent on, making sure I review his business everywhere I can.

It depends on what it is on how many people come out. I called and emailed them to tell them exactly what I need. They pretty much know before they get here. I use them a lot on building inspection's for houses I sell, so I can actually email them a copy of the building inspection report with pictures. Normally it is not necessary to send more than one person.

At 9:48pm on June 15, 2016, the condenser fan motor had stopped spinning again. Throughout the evening the motor would stop and start repeatedly. On June 16, 2016 the fan stopped working again and I had a different company come out and they told me the fan motor had stopped working and it needed to be replaced. On June 17, 2016the company came back out and replaced the fan motor to get it working again. The system worked without issue after their replacement. I called the company three times and sent 1 email requesting a conversation with someone to come to a mutually agreed upon resolution to the problem. They never called me back.
Description of Work: On June 15, 2016 Chowning Heating and Cooling came to my home on an after hours call because my air conditioner was no longer functioning properly. It was determined that the condenser fan motor needed to be replaced. The project was completed around 8:30pm.

Chowning came to my home in May 2008 to repair a reversing valve under warranty. They charged 297.00. On approx. Nov 1 the unit quit working again. Chowning came out and said the same part went out. It took six weeks for them to get part and repair the unit. On Dec. 11 they finished repairs and charged me 165.00. On Dec. 24, the unit stopped working again. When he returned again he said the same part went out again. He called me the last time on Jan 14 saying he was talking to the factory and would get back with me. I finally contacted the maufacturer in February and was told that the problems arose because he heated the pipe too much and caused a crack. After repeated calls to this company I hired someone else on 2/26 and had repairs done. When I contacted the BBB about this matter he lied and said that he did all he could. The report he gave BBB was totally inaccurate. He told the BBB that he had a 30 day warranty on repairs, this unit broke 14 days after his last repair then just left me hanging. I spent several hours and phone calls researching to find out why this part kept breaking and kept getting the same answer"He got the pipe too hot and it caused a stress point when installing. Which weakened and cracked. This even was the response from the factory. Please be careful of this dealer.

Response from Chowning Heating & Cooling
First of all the member is only the second complaint we have received in 14 years. The first being a problem of an electrician, not hired by us. We pride ourselves on giving excellent service and extremely fair pricing. Her first failure of the valve in question was after 3 years of the unit running. It was a factory part installed by the factory. We replaced the part. Five months later the exact same part, which was a small tube, blew out and lost all the refrigerant. The small tube in question is a factory installed tube. We do not apply heat to that tube, it is factory welded. We do apply heat near the area in question but we take precautions by coating the entire area with a heat dissipationg solvent. Upon completion a vacuum pump is put on the sealed system. If there is a leak or a crack the system will not hold a vacuum. The system held. We felt bad for the member which is why we only charged her $90 in total labor for the second repair, which included two trips. She was charged for the refrigerant which the manufacturer does not cover. We were actually in our right to charge her full cost on labor because the labor warranty was out. We were just barely covering out cost, we didn't make money on the job. Thats not what our company is about, we try to be fair to customers, its not always about making money. We couldn't keep going back over and over again because it was not fair to her and not fair to us. The manufacturer needed to step up and do something which is what we were trying to have happen. It took too long for the member, which I understand, but there was nothing I could do. The manufacturer made us look bad and I still cannot understand how the member can't see our point. We tried to help her out and it backfired on us. She reported us to everyone she could. The BBB took our side and so did the States attorney general. The facts are the facts, I understand she's upset, but to try and give us a bad name is absolutey rediculous. I started this company to give people a company they can trust and at prices that were fair, not inflated. This is why almost all of our work comes from referals. Since then, we have switched manufactures and are using Carrier now. We had several problems getting parts in a timely manner from the other manufacturer, which reflects on us. Since the recession they just were not stocking much anymore and their customer service was going downhill. A change had to be made in order to provide the service I want to provide.
