ENGLISH SWEEP

The job went well. Zach was punctual, early actually (but called first to see of ok), and did a very good job. He was very professional, took the time to answer questions before he started sweeping and cleaned up so well afterwards that you wouldn't know he was even there. I would definitely use them again.

It went well. I selected English Sweep because they won the Angie's list award for chimney sweep. The service man protected the home from dust and swept the chimney. In the process he identified some structural issues inside the chimney and suggested an oval steel insert inside the chimney. He suggested additional mortar work and fireproof insulation to keep the home safe. He bid $3100 for the job. I checked Angie's list and noticed Ashes Away won the Angie's award for best chimney repair. Called them. They confirmed the need for repairs and offered to do similar work for $400 less. They got the job. Both companies were excellent. Angie's list paid for itself. Thanks.

Cleaning and inspection were done promptly. We are however still waiting on a proposal for repair work that needs to be done as they informed us that the chimney was unsafe to use. It has been over a month since the initial inspection, and we have contacted them a few times.

They were on time and professional. Very thorough and I trusted their judgement. I would recommend them to anyone.

I noticed a smoke odor in the house when the fireplace was used. I called English Sweep to clean the chimney. After sweeping the technician used a camera to inspect the chimney and found some of the tiles lining the chimney were damaged and some grout between the tiles was missing. He recommended that the fireplace not be used until it was repaired. He provided an estimate for installing a stainless steel liner; within a day a written proposal was emailed to me. When I signed the contract in September I was told that the work would probably not be done until mid-November. When I contacted English Sweep in early November I was informed that because of bad weather in October several jobs had been delayed and that it was impossible to provide even an estimate as to when the job would be done. Then, much to my surprise, they called on November 9 and said that because another job was canceled they could come on November 10 which of course was fine with us. The three person crew arrived at the designated time. Tarps were put down from the front door to the fireplace and the area around the fireplace was also covered. The work involved removing a few bricks on the outside of the chimney to allow access to where the new liner met the firebox and installing a new chimney cover. All debris from the brick work was cleaned up. The area where the bricks were removed and replaced matches almost perfectly to the existing brick work. Because a scaffold was not needed to reach the chimney a credit was given from the original quote. That is very fair. Before the crew left a small was started in the fireplace to be sure the chimney was drawing properly which it was. Since then I have had several fires and not a hint of smoke or odor in the house. All-in-all I don't know how the job could have been better - excellent workmanship, fair price, and best of all it solved the problems that had been occurring.

The technician, Russ, came to inspect and sweep the chimney in our very old house. He ended up spending close to an hour trying to figure out how the fireplace was built in the first place (it's a very, very old house). Because of some structural idiosyncrasies, it was not possible to inspect the inside of the chimney with the camera, but Russ was able to point out many problems and red flags. So, technically, no service was performed, no money charged, but I feel I got a good deal of professional advice free of charge. I would definitely recommend this company.

I called English Sweep having been a long time customer and asked them to provide an estimate on rebuilding my fireplace chimney. A service person arrived promptly and sent me the requested estimate proposal. I accepted and sent them the required downpayment in early September. Unfortunately they were quite backed up and were not able to get to the job until the end of October. The work crew was professional and explained to me the details of the work. The completed job looks quite good and we are very satisfied with the work and look forward to using our fireplace soon. The work site was cleaned up well and all debris removed. I would recommend English Sweep for all fireplace and wood stove work.

I waited a full year to write this review... English Sweep did a great job. They came out originally to clean and inspect the chimney of our house that we had recently bought. They informed us that our flue was cracked and needed relined. I informed the gentleman that our fireplaced smelled awful, like a campfire, and it was so bad that sometimes it gave me headaches. That's when he told me about negative air pressure and how our new windows and doors were causing a negative air flow. Basically our house is so airtight now that it forces the air conditioner unit to draw air down the chimney forcing smoke scented air into the house. He told me his only solution was a Plusaire system. It is basically a venting system where they drill a hole into your wall and install a vent and duct directly into your air conditioning system. You could open a window and get the same effect. It just allows fresh air into your house to feed into your air conditioning system. But we didn't want to leave a window open in all weather (heat, rain, cold, snow). The Plusaire system ducts directly into your air conditioning system allowing the fresh air to be filtered, then cooled or warmed according to weather. Plus it keeps any rain or snow from entering your home. I waited a year to give this review because I wanted to see how it worked in all weather so I could give a fair, informed review. We are very happy with the system so far. It has resolved the smoke smell in our house. Now there are days when the weather is mild and humid where you can still smell the fireplace, but usually it is days when the unit isn't running at all and the smell is more of a hint of a smell,not an overpowering give you headaches smell. The Plusaire system worked for us spring, summer, fall, and winter. It was well worth the cost. I'd advise anyone with a smoke smell problem to consider this remedy. It worked for us. Also they did a fine job relining our fireplace flue and we can safely use our fireplace whenever we want. They also replaced a chimney cap and a few months later during a very windy storm, it blew off. They came out right away and reset it at no cost. Thank you English Sweep for all your help!

Had an appointment with these guys to look at three of the five coal->gas fireplaces in my 114 year old house in a the city. I called to confirm my late morning appointment at 10am and was told everything was on schedule. At 4:45pm when no one had shown up I called back. My appointment had been moved without my knowing it because the technician was no longer available. While I understand that things come up, I would have appreciated a phone call. Also, the person I talked to the second time I called did not seem concerned at all with what had happened and just kept telling me, "Well, I didn't do it." My work schedule is incredibly hectic and making the time for home repair appointments is not easy. I cancelled the appointment and am looking for a different company.

They were very thorough and informative. Two gentleman showed up on time and did a complete inspection. The lead technician explained my setup and what maintenance was required. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I was very pleased with my experience with English Sweep. From the initial contact for scheduling to the sweep and inspection itself, the gentleman at English Sweep were very polite, accomodating, efficient, and professional. Matt contacted me the morning of our scheduled appointment to notify me of his anticipated arrival time. Prior to the sweep, we discussed my concerns (including the possibility of a hornet's nest in the chimney) and he explained the process of the cleaning and inspection. He was very professional, finished the job in a timely manner and left the fireplace surroundings clean and tidy. The entire process only took about an hour. I would certainly recommend English Sweep and will plan to use them again as needed in the future.

How impressive - what an honest person/company. Came to evaluate water in my basement chimney floor. Took one look and told me to call a foundation person since that was the problem. Gave me name of an honest man/company for this. No charge in spite of coming to my house and evaluating my chimney. What integrity. I will happily pass on this this company to my neighbors.

Great, Matt came in, itroduced himself and went right to work. He answered my questions on the workings of the chimney and also found some issues that needed to be resolved. Quoted prices on doing the needed fixes, and later that week, emailed an official quote to cover the extra needs.

It went well. Scheduling was about a week or two out but this was during their busy season. Technician noticed a crack in one brick and mortar missing along one horizontal joint. From these issues, they provided a quote for a full replacement flume or to resurface the existing brick. I declined both options, as they did not appear to be substantial enough to warrant the additional cost (around $4,000 for resurfacing and $6,000 for a new flume) which seemed high at first glance.

The first fireplace is a brick and mortar fireplace. Russ set out a drop cloth and went to work. It was really neat when he used the camera and was able to show me what the inside of the fireplace looked like. He even went as far as to warn is when he was about to turn in the vacuum so my little one could cover her ears. Russ was very knowledgable and able to explain to me everything he was doing and answer any questions I had. He did the same with the second fireplace, which is a pre-fab wood burning. After he was done, he cleaned up and provided me with a couple different options to fix the problems that he encountered. It was an overall great experience. Even the phone call I made to set up the appointment was pleasant and very informative.

Arrived on time and was professional, tidy and informative. Would use them again.

I highly recommend English Sweep. They called when on the way, inspected my flue ( wasn't a creosote buildup like I had thought, just normal carbon/ash) did a thorough job of sweeping the flue and inspected the fireplace as well as the chimney on the roof. I was very impressed with Russ' attention to detail and his patience in answering all of my questions. I will definitely use them again next year.

I called to scheduled the original inspection in late November or early December and the first available date was for December 14. I received a call the evening before from Gene with English Sweep that the appointment had to be rescheduled due to snow. The new date was January 4th and, somewhat annoyed, I asked to be put on a waiting list if a cancellation occurred. I received a call back from Gene on December 16 stating that a time slot opened up due to a cancellation and asked if the next day, December 17, was OK. That worked for our schedule and I appreciated the quick rescheduling. The technician, Joe Meyer, called 15 minutes before arrival to let us know he was on his way.and arrived within the agreed upon time. Joe was courteous, knowledgeable and personable and completed the cleaning in less than an hour. He advised us that the rear masonry heat panel was cracked through and that the panel should be replaced. He patched the panel as a temporary repair so we could have fires until we could locate the model number of our fireplace. Joe cleaned the work space and let us know that English Sweep would be sending us an email advising of the need to replace the rear fireplace panel. I appreciated the fact that English Sweep was able to reschedule our cleaning as quickly as they were and that that the technician was professional and neat. I would definitely recommend English Sweep in the future.

Joe arrived on time. He was polite and friendly. He cleaned the fireplace and chimney. He replaced a broken part. After he was fininshed and cleaned up, he explained everything he did and why. He then inspected the chimney from the roof. He did a great job and I'd absolutely contact English Sweep again. My fireplace looks awesome!!

He only gave me a estimate on wood and never even gave me the estimate I needed for the repair. I specifically said I didn't have the money for the log installation, but needed to know how much for the repair. Said they would apply the cost of the service call fee to the repair fees.

They were wonderful! Came out to inspect and gave us a bid in a timely fashion. Upon arrival they worked quickly and efficiently. I was surprised at how little noise there was. They made sure to cover the hearth and floor protect the surfaces. The work did not take long and within an hour they cleaned up their tools and put the place back in order just as they had found it. Ashes Away owner and his son were extremely clean and conscientious about their work. Before they left, they gave a tutioral about how to use the new damper chain as well as some other suggestions for us. Both men double checked the room before they left to make sure it was to my satisfaction. I highly recommend them!

Russ provided the requested service at our home. He was prompt, polite and professional. As this was the first time we had this type of service performed, we had questions which Russ took the time to answer. He offered suggestions but there was no pressure to make any type of additional purchase. I would definitely refer this company to my friends and neighbors.

ToEnglish Sweep was very good about getting back to us and setting our appointment. They also worked with us about scheduling both chimneys on the same day at a concurrent time so we could pay for both at the same time. The guy was wonderful and very professional. He identified himself on arrival and I felt very safe having him in the house. He did a great job and was probably the first person we've had climb to to roof (2 story house) to check the chimney from above. When he did that, he found that the flashing on the chimney was gapping from the chimney by about 2 inches. (he took phone pics). We had such a good experience with them that we had them come back and do the repair. The price was fair and the quality was excellent. The person who did the repair was friendly, clean and professional. He did the repair in the morning (in order to get off the roof before rain started), and took pics again of the finished flashing. Thank you guys for doing a great job and you are now our "official" sweeps!

The serviceman was prompt. He explained the service and gave us information about the fireplace and the stove piper, since we recently acquired the house. He covered the area near the fireplace to contain any mess, and when he left, the area was just as he found it. It took about an hour. The serviceman was professional and thorough, checking the fireplace out from the top of the stove pipe to the inside.
