ENGLISH SWEEP

I was very pleased with English Sweep from calling to schedule the appointment to Russ coming out and performing the service. I was well informed thru the whole process from what to expect, when to expect a call, arrival time, a run down of what was going to be done, and a follow up discussion regarding what the cleaning uncovered. Russ was very polite, considerate, and verbose in his description of the task. He took photos with an iPad to have record of the condition of my fireplace, chimney, roof exhaust, etc., and used a camera to view the inside of the flue to make sure there was no structural damage hidden in the chimney. He shared the photos with me explaining what he found. Overall I am very satisfied with the service and will definitely call them back when it's time for the next cleaning.

Work was completed as expected. Technician provided photos to show possibility of loose bricks at chimney cap - pointed out that chimney cap should have been extended past chimney to provide a drip edge when house was built, minimize wear on chimney face. Company followed up with bid for repair, no hard sell. Very satisfied.

Work was well done. In addition to being conscientious and a careful worker, Russ seems the kind of guy I'd like as a neighbor. I wish him continued success.

English Sweep performed an inspection ($225) and recommended that we replace the cap on the top of our chimney. The worker showed us pictures of the old cap and where he thought water was getting in. His explanation sounded reasonable, so we scheduled the repair. Two weeks later, the work was done (another $250). We were pleased with the service until the next rainstorm, when the dripping in the chimney was louder than before. We called English Sweep back, but the worker who performed the repair swore that the job was done correctly. The company sent us "after" photos of the repair and suggested we contact a roofer. So we spent $575 for a repair to fix a leak, AND OUR CHIMNEY STILL LEAKS!!!!! In the "after" photos the company sent us, there are obvious gaps around the chimney that look like they could let water in. How were these missed in the first inspection? We were told ONLY about the chimney cap. It seems like a layer of caulk could fix the gaps. Why was this simple repair NOT suggested in the original inspection? Why was the focus on replacing the chimney cap instead of sealing the gaps? I feel that the company recommended a more expensive repair than might have been necessary. We should have been given an option to either only replace the cap, only seal the gaps, or do both. If the gaps were missed, then the company provided both a poor diagnostic service and an unneeded repair. I have included two of the "after" photos.

Great. They did great work on the chimney that hadn't been used in many years!

In 2016, the company returned to clean the chimney. The technician discovered that the heat shield was peeling away from the bottom tile. We had not seen this. The technician said that the heat shield was under warranty. The company contacted the manufacturer to learn how to make the repair. They returned and repaired the flue at no charge. We are impressed by their honesty and professionalism.

The overall process went very well. Removed gas line and old gas fire logs Added shut-off valve and capped gas connection Lined chimney with metal duct Installed spring loaded flue with chain and latch Patched the firebox and chimney Patched venting holes in basement wall Cleaned up metal log stand for reuse with firewood All of this was done to a 100+ year-old 3-story home. During the initial inspection, they stated what would be needed to convert to a natural fireplace. They answered all my questions, and provided a detailed quote within a couple days. The price was right, so we scheduled the work. Signed the order and put 33% down. They showed up on the scheduled date and time with a team of 4 guys. Unloaded all the supplies and erected scaffolding. Did all the work, and took down the scaffolding. They were not too loud, were very professional and introduced themselves. They did a great job of cleaning up after themselves. All the work was done in 5 hours. During the process, the lead guy, Mike, answered all my questions and made sure I was satisfied. One very minor issue was with the up front communication. After I received the quote and scheduled the work, I had a couple questions via email and phone. It took a few tries before I could get a response. Not a big deal, but that is work the C for responsiveness came from. I would recommend these guys.

This project went very well. The guys in the office were responsive and helped me select a chimney cap that would look good with our new copper gutter system. The chimney cap was installed and it came in sooner than I was expecting. A very good experience. Only one suggestion would be to tighten their records around payment. I paid the installers the day they came out, and received two subsequent calls requesting payment.

They actually came earlier than scheduled. We have a stack washer and dryer that is not vented in a straight line. It goes up some turns and then outside. They arrived and did not hesitate at all about cleaning the vent. I had another service come out prior to booking English Sweep and the guy did not even want to try to clean it !I booked 2 guys as they had to move the stack dryer. They were both very nice and did a great job! I will definitely have them come once a year as they do a very thorough job!

I had my fireplace cleaned, on October 6, 2105, at which time a crack was found in my chimney's flue. I was advised of the crack, I was shown photos of it, and I was given the option of scheduling an additional appointment to have the chimney flue resurfaced, which I opted to do. The resurfacing appointment was scheduled for November, and all went well with that appointment. I can now use my fireplace without worrying about the possibility of a chimney fire.

The provider was supposed to come out and inspect and sweep our chimney in our new (old) home. They rescheduled the first time due to the flood-no big deal. They came out the second time and the guy basically said he needed to talk to his boss as his sweep was a rigid sweep and wouldn't work. He thought he would need a flexible sweep and he would call us the next day to reschedule. We hear nothing for a week and then get an invoice for $1800 via e-mail. I subsequently called to find out what this for and had to follow-up twice to get someone to call me back. I then spoke to someone who explained that they couldn't clean it out with a flexible sweep. I asked how they knew this as no one had looked at it other than from the bottom of the chimney. I also explained that before I spend $1800 I want someone to come look at the chimney. I explained we have a flat roof with easy access and that the roof lines on both sides of our house touch the adjacent roof so there is zero reason for scaffolding. The guy stated he did not know he had roof access and would call to reschedule. We have heard nothing back from them. I am very disappointed as this company was supposed to be the best in STL.

I purchased the level 1 chimney sweep service on 11/10 and was glad that they would be able to come out to our house quickly -- 11/13 -- because we wanted a fire for Thanksgiving. The technician arrived within the specified time window, laid out tarps, and started to work. Within a few minutes he told me that the damper was stuck because the chimney was full of sticks. He wiggled the handle for a few minutes more and said that it would be impossible to perform the service because of the stoppage. He then told me that in order to make the chimney operational they would have to come back out and either remove the firebox or tear out bricks from the side of the chimney, and would probably also need to put scaffolding on the roof and take down the exposed part of the chimney in order to remove the debris. He promised to send a bid for making the fireplace operational when he got back to the shop, and said he would discount the charge for a "site visit" but couldn't provide any information about how the pre-paid charge would be refunded. I called the shop, who told me I would have to contact Angies list, who told me that I would have to get the refund from the shop, who emailed me that I would have to get it from Angies List. Angie's list seemed to finally agree with that assessment when I called them (again), but I still haven't seen my refund (2/2/16). It isn't their fault that Angies list has been slow, but they didn't do anything to help me, either. I have not ever received the promised bid, either, even though I reminded the folks I talked to on the phone about it and they promised they would follow up. The kicker is that after not hearing from them and getting frustrated, I looked at the damper more closely myself. I could immediately see that I could use a normal automotive jack and a piece of 2X4 to force the damper open. I did so, and was able to remove the debris myself. It was messy and it took a little time, but it wasn't difficult. At the end of the day I can't tell if the guy that came to my house just didn't want to work or if he doesn't know his job, but I know that I paid $200 for absolutely nothing.

The cost covered the deal. We were happy. They weren't late. If I remember looking at their description of their services, I thought they were going to go outside and look to see if it needed any tuckpointing. He didn't tell me when he left as he's going out and doing that. He could have told me what he was doing and why and whether he's going to do the outside deal or not. He didn't explain it too much to me.

Went fine. They came last year and discovered a problem with the chimney which was repaired. Everything was still fine this year. They checked, cleaned and left.

Joe did a great job. He was on time after calling ahead to let me know when he was coming. He was pleasant and professional. He cleaned the fireplace and made sure there was no mess. He saved me $20 from the original price quote because I had a different type of fireplace than I thought I had. I wouldn't have known the difference. I could tell he did a thorough inspection because he asked questions about some previous work that had been done. Even my dog liked him! I was very satisfied and would call them again.

Provider arrived on time and was very friendly. He was efficient. He answered my questions and thoroughly cleaned the chimney.

Technician cleaned the chimney and the mess. Left the house spotless. In addition, the inspection revealed some problems with our chimney that may have been contributing to a leak. I would recommend English Sweep and will use them again.

I bought a new Fireplace door (old one was falling apart) off of Amazon.com and was having issues getting the door to stay mounted to the fireplace. Called English Sweep and they said they would take a look and give it a try. Installer was very professional and found a nice way to mount it to fireplace.

Excellent job. I hadn't had our chimney cleaned in quite awhile. He arrived promptly and was very careful with covering everything near the fireplace. After cleaning, he used the camera to check for any problems. I was not able to view this as I was busy, but wish he would have interrupted me to do so. Noproblems found and he suggested I do this every two years considering how often we build a fire. Will definitely use them again.

They have excellent customer service. They cleaned up and they did a wonderful job.

They are going to completely rebuild one of my chimneys, and do some tuck work as well.

The team came and immediately started setup to keep the house clean during the process. They carefully traced back all the lines in the chimney to make sure everything was done correctly. They competed the work early and we are very comfortable that the 80 year old chimney will keep going for another 80 years.

He did a very good job. The gentleman showed up on time. He got up on the roof and made sure everything was functioning well.

It was all good. We didn't have any issues. They left the work area very clean.

Neither the quality of the service nor the agent of the company met my expectations. I believe the KSDK Channel 5 interview with this company was bogus. Simply stated, it was a bait and switch scam. I did not get anything close to the service I requested in my inquiry questionnaire nor what I requested when making/ confirming my appointment with the office. I specifically said I had one fire brick that had fallen from the back of the fire box, one brick with a crack, and there was a need of new mortar work. The young man whom arrived was only prepared to sweep the chimney. When asked about the fire brick whic had fallen out and was being held in with a new fireback we purchased, he said he would not fix it as it would need fixing again in the future. When asked about the crack in the aother brick he said, "I do not carry mortar. Those types of supples are kept at the shop." What he did tell my husband and I was that he recommended a total rebuild of our fire box because English Sweep would not put their name on a repaired fireplace. Basically they rebuild not repair. In addition, when I asked him to do a camera inspection he said it wasn't necessary even though we have a three story home! We felt as if the certified personnel took Christmas vacation and the guy whom showed up for our service was hired the previous day without knowledge or proper training. The answer to every question was, 'Um, I'm not sure.' or 'If I fix it, it will need to be repaired again.' Or 'I suggest we rebuild your fire box.' Before leaving we asked if it was safe to use our fireplace and he responds with a resounding 'Yes'. By the way, I feel horrible because I referred this company to a friend. Her appointment was the previous day. She must have had the same service person, because she said she was confused because the service guy could not give her a straight answer. I research companies before employing their service. My trust in KSDK Channel 5 (vender interview) along with an 'A' rating on Angie's List did not ensure top class service. I am a very very disappointed customer who wasted valuable vacation time dealing with this company.
