Description of Work: We asked English Sweep to clean our chimney (we were selling our house, the closing was on September 4, and the buyers were insisting that we have the chimney cleaned prior to close). They came on August 28th to clean the chimney, and we had already moved to Connecticut. I had flown back to supervise the packing of the house. Gregg came, swept the chimney, and told me that while he was able to sweep it, the flue wasn't opening as much as he'd like, and we needed to get it fixed. He also said that we needed to repair a cracked cap. I asked for an estimate, intending to credit the buyers since we were about to close, and I was going to be back in Connecticut in a few days. He started writing out an estimate on the original form (for $650), and then crossed it out and said he'd get back to me. He emailed me on August 30th with an estimate of $1550 for both the damper repair and the cracked cap (along with cleaning all 3 chimneys, which we didn't ask for), and his estimate put the work to be done on September 3, the day before close. I called a few times, and finally got through to them the day before they wanted to do the work, trying to tell them that we only wanted an estimate, not to have the work done, and that the buyers didn't ask for the other chimneys to be cleaned. At this point I was home in Connecticut. I was told that the work was being done, that the buyers were going to pay for the cleaning of the chimneys, and it had already been scheduled. I told them no. I just needed an updated estimate. They not only went ahead and did the work, but they had the buyers there while they were cleaning the other chimneys (without our consent), and when I asked for the updated bill, since it was no longer just an estimate, they sent me an email of an estimate for brand new stainless steel liners ($12,000), and tuck pointing ($1700), on which they had cc'd the buyers. They listed these repairs as needed for "potentially hazardous current standards for chimneys". The buyers cancelled the closing because of this, and it nearly lost us the sale of the house, as well as costing us $12,000 for what the buyers insisted were now needed upgrades. I have no idea what Gregg said to them while he was doing work on OUR house, but I certainly don't trust him. We ended up having to get the liners just to be able to close, but we definitely didn't give him the work. He was unprofessional, pushy, and dishonest. I added the $12,000 to the cost even though they didn't do that work because he cost us that much with his "recommendations."
