Your roof (the forgotten asset): what it can contribute to your remodel and EVERYDAY LIFE! This is my second review for Mike Pittman, his staff, quality products and their service. They get an “A” Rating for all the “normal reasons” BUT, this review doesn’t address those typical issues; this review and “A” rating goes beyond those points: it’s for “out of the box thinking”, problem solving and forward planning. For readers who want the “short version”: I’m taking the time to write this review because IF ASKED, Mike can do much more than roof repairs and replacement; he can suggest to any homeowner, reasonably priced ways help you use your roof as a remodel asset that you will see benefit from immediately and every day forward. Truthfully, most people only call roofers to get damage repaired or roofs replaced; many times only willing to spend the limited funds that insurance appraisals will cover. We, as homeowners rarely consider a roofer when doing a remodel…or… to address low light or current problem areas inside the house. Mike and his staff can work with homeowners to bring natural light in areas where needed, including (but not limited to) a basement. Yes, I said natural light in a basement! Whether your designing a new home, planning a remodel or even just looking for affordable solutions to remedy dark areas in your current home, consider the assets your roof and a knowledgeable installer can provide. In my experience, Mike and his staff are always up to a challenge and actually enjoy applying creative thinking with current products to accomplish your goal. Recently, I hired him to install three Velux Sun Tunnels. Mike had installed one for us when he replaced our roof about 2.5 years ago. At that time, my husband, didn’t think a 10 inch sun tunnel would provide much light, but when he came home the day Mike installed it, he asked why I hadn’t requested more! My husband was amazed by the amount of light that flooded our interior guest-room shower (it’s in the center of the house without any windows, so the room was always dark). Infact, several months back, we had overnight company that used that bathroom. Before he left, my visiting brother-in-law actually walked up to my husband and apologized for leaving the light on in his bathroom because he couldn’t find the light-switch to turn off the light in the shower! TRUE STORY! So, we decided to add three more sun tunnels: in our walk-in pantry (also an interior room), an interior hallway and over our master-bath shower (which is on the north side of the house). For the record, our master-bath already had two exterior wall windows, but the shower was always dark and seemed dirty; but not now! I can’t believe how the added light makes the shower walls so bright white and the entire area feels fresh and clean! It feels like a spa in there now: we LOVE all the new Velux Sun Tunnels! Most of ours are the smallest 10 inch size, but we put a 14 inch into our bathroom, because we could add a $49 light kit to it as well (not available for the 10 inch size). Back to my original point: These Velux Sun Tunnels can be installed anytime/anywhere. They are extremely reasonable in price, haven’t leaked a drop, and they are a very cost-effective way to gain light in your home where you need it. I honestly can’t believe how a little bit of natural light adds bounce to your morning mood and frankly, value to your home because the natural light gives an immediate impression of being “updated and new”. If you want light in your basement, the highly reflective tubing is small enough that it can be run in the back of a closet, laundry room or even be framed into a small hidden cubby next to a bookcase or existing wall. Another option: I’m even considering adding two more sun tunnels, that would tie into my existing drywall tunnels for our original two large glass skylights in our kitchen. Those drywall ceiling tunnels are angled for skylights that face westbound (afternoon light mainly, so the room is dark all morning). If a sun tunnel was added on the opposite side of the roof pitch and tied into the existing drywall tunnels, my kitchen could benefit from natural light both pitches (both morning and afternoon)! Basically, the “sky is the limit” as far as applications go; provided you have a skilled installer, trained by Velux reps/installers (which Mike was). But remember, you have to find an installer who listens to your issues, then who can pair creative critical thinking skills to quality rated/energy efficient products on the market…so you can get the solution you’re looking for, at a cost-effective price. Mike (and his staff) are good listeners and they care about happy and satisfied clients.

Perfect. Pittman did this job for us years ago but I felt it was necessary to give them a great review because, even after all these years, they were one of the best contractors we've ever hired. The quality of the work they did added a substantial amount to the value of the house when we finally sold it.

He chose not to respond to our email. Very unprofessional, if he was busy or not interested a simple reply would have been appreciated. But ignoring all together is totally unacceptable. I was hesitant to even contact him because according to other feedback he has done the same thing to other potential customers. If he's so busy maybe he should be taken off of your list of possible contractors.
Description of Work: We wanted him to give us an estimate on replacing our roof and possibly doing the work.

Project went extremely well!! It was a large hail damage job (70 sq roof alone), in a rural area, and took approximately 5 weeks to finish 98% of the job. Then, as backordered parts arrived, the owner, Mike Pittman, called or emailed to clear a time to come out and either he or 1-2 of the crew came back to finish the remaining details. I was onsite (but out of the way) everyday, in case anyone had specific questions as work progressed, or needed anything. The crew size varied anywhere from 2-7 (depending on what work was being done that day). Jim, the roofing foreman, was very knowledgable and had a "good eye" for straight lines and overseeing his crew's work. You could tell this crew had worked together for some time. At the end of each roofing day, Jim always walked around the house, picking up all trash, nails (both manually and with magnet rollers). I was very impressed with his oversight and personal attention! The roofing crew did a very beautiful job: no nails showing (and I have personally been up on our roof several times looking around). They installed with straight lines (and our roof is more than a 100 feet long w/o turns/interruptions...not easy to keep straight)..and they did a small but attractive detail: they carried the shingle edges about 3/4 inch over the wood frame edge on the gable ends...a very nice clean detail! Every single crew member was very polite, respectful of property, bushes, parking arrangements, trash, even stacking items into piles before leaving every afternoon. When my husband and I designed this house, I was the "general contractor" for the entire process; here everyday and oversaw all work, questions and changes. I have experience with contractors and I admit, I am impressed with Mike Pittman and his entire crew. I have a very discerning eye when it comes to straight lines (the guys were amazed how I could notice even minor crooked/uneven lines from the ground). If there was something I wanted adjusted, I only had to ask and they did without complaint. Frankly, I learned a few new things too: such as how poorly installed my dormer windows were originally. I was so very impressed with both Tyler and Travis' complete attention to detail, making sure to multi layer seal around windows as well as wall seams where dormer wall to roof floor meets. And on fascia metal: they even bent the corners into a cleanly finished ends. Attention was paid to all the details. Mike Pittman's motto: "He wants his customers happy (because happy customers come back and they refer to their friends.)"...and he puts his actions behind those words! He is a hard working young businessman with many years of roofing experience. He is trying to expand his business into storm damage repair; offering multiple kinds of repairs, not just roofing...which makes it easier on his clients (and frankly easier when dealing with insurance and banking paperwork too). Mike does/can work with your insurance if you wish; I however, handled it myself. 1. He hires very experienced staff (talking to the guys, I was amazed by the wide range of experience these guys had). I knew I was in good hands; and they could work through any kind of a problem, should one arise. 2. He possesses a "rare quality" in most contractors: Mike both LISTENS to what his client says/wants/needs AND he can EXPLAIN how the process works (in simple terms), which might put older people or worried clients "at ease". I value this personal trait most, because you, as a client, knows what to expect, and if there is a problem, he comes and talks out options with you. 3. He's reliable, honest and upfront and I found I could trust he would do what he said he would: he honored his committments...and if for some reason, he couldn't make an appointment, he called or emailed. 4. Long term: I feel confident, that should I have any problems down the road, I will not have any problem getting him back on site. He (and his staff) takes great pride in their work and finished product. Everyday, as they were finishing up, I took out drinks and we talked a bit before they left. I personally noticed that every single one of them looked back up at their work, as we talked, looking to see if they missed anything (basically, assessing their work from a distance). That's reassuring these days. Bank inspector's remarks: My inspector was here for a little over an hour, looking over the entire site. We then talked about specific details on the job and how things were done. She admitted before leaving that she knew when she started down our driveway that it was a "quality job" and it was verified as she inspected the job. Moreover, she told me that she very impressed that I was so happy with the outcome and that it was obvious to her that we (Mike Pittman and I) established a good working relationship, because my attitude gave her the impression that the ordeal went smoothly (which it did). Also, when I called the bank, to get a copy of the inspection report, even the person I spoke with was somewhat surprised to see that the report came back 100% completed; which apparently is unusual for the first inspection done. No job can go 100% perfect (we life in the real world). The ONLY "con" I can think of to list; (which Mike corrected with a "pro")...was being a little late on ordering supplies (specifically siding). Missouri had ALLOT of hail damage this year, so ALL roofers were swamped all summer. I'm sure that was the case with Mike's schedule before arriving on our job site; and most likely the reason siding supplies weren't ordered a little sooner. Unfortunately, when he was ordering the siding, several days before they were to arrive onsite, he found that our siding had been discontinued. Mike called me as soon as he knew, and we both started calling suppliers and checking warehouses for the small amount I needed. We felt we found an acceptable match, but it happened to be a shade of white not normally stocked locally, so it had to be shipped from out of state and took time to arrive in the area. I don't profess to understand ordering routines, but had we known even a week sooner, it likely could have shaved 2-3 days off the overall length of time on the site. This was not a problem for me, I only mention it because unexpected delays can happen. Mike handled it very professionally; he even called around to find a sample, then drove out of his way (into IL) to pick up a sample piece of the siding he found, then drove to our house which is half way through the state of Missouri...JUST so I could look at and approve the color, texture and size of the design, before he ordered what we needed. Obviously, he went out of his way to make sure that we would get an acceptable replacement. How many other contractors would give almost a day's time to making sure the client was happy with the replacement? This "ordering a little late" was the ONLY issue I can think of to mention, and it was very minor! He apologized for not finding out the siding had been discontinued sooner, then he went out of his way to correct it and make sure I was happy and we wouldn't have any further delays due to poor product match. (A+ in handling, quick thinking and effort). Overall, Mike and his entire crew did their very best to make the repairs easy on me, our property, while keeping me happy during the process and making sure that the job they were hired to do was done to my satisfaction. I would/will hire them again, NO DOUBT!! This probably sounds silly, but after five weeks of working, I was a little sad to see them go. They are truly good hearted young men who do quality work.
Description of Work: Strip and replace all roofing, installed metal valleys, zinc strips under new omni ridge venting, replace skylights, added one new sun-tunnel skylight, replace windows (CORRECTLY installing, weather-sealing and insulating, both replace and repair vinyl siding and metal fascia, install new gutters, revising/tweaking drainage to correct old overflow problems that came with fast downpours...ALL siding repair work came with a "tyvak style" water protection wrapping where-ever they had to remove siding down to wood (even if wrap was not there before). ALL work came with a signed 12 year contractor warranty.

My parents were switching insurance companies and the new company said that there where some repairs that needed to be made on the roof before they would cover it. I made the mistake of contacting the old insurance company first and they sent out an adjuster. Based on the adjuster's input the old insurance company said they would only cover repairs and since the repairs were under the deductible there would be nothing paid. Being very frugal, initially the most my dad wanted to do was repair the roof. I found Mike Pittman on Angie's List and liked the reviews so I contacted him. He showed up early for the appointment, inspected the roof and provided an estimate for the repair. He also advised that with the condition and age of the roof that he could not guarantee the repairs and more work would probably need to be done within a year. He thought it would be worth trying to contact the insurance company again. He also gave a ballpark figure for replacement so I could pass it on to my dad. I called the insurance company and gave them Mike's contact information. After Mike talked to them he came to the conclusion based on the discussion that we would simply be wasting time trying to get the roof covered because the old insurance company was talking about sending out an engineer as well as the adjuster. He said his experience with that is it never resulted in the company covering replacement of the roof. I asked him to let me know when he could make the repairs. When I discussed it with my dad, he had a change of mind and wanted to see written estimates for replacement of the roof and since it was for replacement, I wanted bids from at least two contractors. Again, Mike showed up slightly before the scheduled time and provided a very professional estimate. Unfortunately, both companies proposed the exact same roof vent and shingles and the other local company was $300 less so we ended up selecting the other contractor. Mike was always very professional and prompt. I would definitely recommend considering him for your roofing needs.

I sorry you still feel this way. First I came out to this customers home to look at what his insurance said was a "repair". On evaluating his roof, I knew the damage was much more extensive and had him contact his insurance adjuster to re-evaluate his claim and I would be on site with the adjuster. In the end he gets the insurance to buy the complete roof replacement. After we received the material and installed his roof, cleaned up the site, I delivered the invoice. As I explained on the day we went over the invoice, you paid the deductible and upgrade costs for the roofing materials installed and your insurance paid the balance. We normally order excess material, above what we invoice for, so we never run short materials on a job and cause delays in completion. And our contract states Pittman Roofing owns all excess material for the job. This customer was charged for 27 squares of "special order" shingle as part of the "upgrade" he requested. This was a longer lead time as they needed to from the factory and not the local distributor. We ordered 30 squares because of the long lead time to get material. Then at the end of the job we left him with one square of shingles just in-case and for no additional charge. At the end of the job, if the distruibutor stocks the material we return it, if they do not, we bare the cost for the extra material as in this case. Again, I sorry you feel this way, but I want people to know the whole story. If you are unhappy with the workmanship, please call. I guarntee my workmanship fullty. Mike Pittman Pittman Roofing

Pittman Roofing Michael Pittman of Pittman Roofing did a wonderful job of replacing my hail-damaged roof. His crew was efficient and worked well together. Michael knew and understood good roofing practices. In addition, he took care of the nitty-gritty of contacting the insurance company claims adjuster. Honest and careful. Just 18 months previously I had the roof replaced because of hail damage. But I did not choose to use that roofer again. He had “additional expenses” to his original estimate, some of which the insurance company covered, and some they didn't. To have it replaced again so soon – I knew I would NOT use the same roofer. I made an appointment for another roofing company estimate. The salesman didn't show at the appointed time, so I (what a lucky accident) called Pittman Roofing. The other company salesman came late with a made-up excuse. When I showed him the copy of the insurance adjuster’s replacement estimate he said they do not contact the insurance company at all. That is completely the responsibility of the homeowner. Those experiences made me doubly appreciative of my good fortune in finding Michael Pittman and having the roof and other small damage repairs done carefully and efficiently. His bookkeeping is accurate, he works within budget, he uses good products, and he takes care of all the reports to the insurance company. And he doesn't take “up front” money on a promise. He shows up with his crew and materials before you make the first payment, and collects the final payment after the insurance company settles with you, in response to his final FAX to the company.
Description of Work: replaced total roof and had AC unit straightened and some screens replaced all caused by hail damage.
