It went very well. He was here when he said he would and got the job done in a timely manner. The quality of work was just fine, we don't have any complaints.

Repair went very well. The crew came to do the work within a week of us accepting the estimate. Cleaned up all debris and made the repair quickly and without much disruption to our day. I would use this company again.
Description of Work: We experienced a leak in the ceiling of our second floor bathroom. Contacted Richards through Angies List search and Richard Ray came out within two days to discuss the problem. He determined that the neoprene flashing around our plumbing exhaust pipes was probably deteriorating, allowing water to get in. He also suggested that we have the flashing around the other pipes replaced while the first was being repaired.

There was no contact after we returned the estimate and asked for the service to be performed. One day a young man just showed up in the driveway with a truck, and went up on the roof. I decided to talk to him when he came down the first time. I missed him when he came down so I never had the chance to talk to him. I got a ladder and went up on the roof myself. I was not happy to find that there was no effort to try to solder the joints, there was no effort to identify the six leaking joints. The young man cleaned out the debris and just smeared silicone paste on every joint in the system, except for the joints where there was water standing. Where there was water standing nothing was done. I called the company and said there was a problem with the work, the owner was to contact me the next day. The next day the owner called. I told him I was upset because there was no effort to make solder repairs. The owner said, "you can't solder gutters that old." This is in spite of the fact that the estimate was for $750 and said solder repair if possible. You can hire someone to smear silicone on gutter joints for $100 any day, $750 implies something like a professional repair job. The owner was not rude but was certainly not professional. The owner did not really want to fix the problem, he said he just wanted to move forward, he said there would be no charge and that ended the conversation. I was not very happy. I contacted two gutter repair companies that same day and got quotes from both of them. The first company rep came out looked at the gutters and said, "it would be easy to solder the gutters if someone had not put silicone on the joints." The rep quoted me $30/joint to make solder repairs if I cleaned off the silicone and $50/joint if they had to clean it off. The bottom line is that these jokers not only did a bad job, didn't follow their own written quote, didn't even tell me they were working on my house, but ended up costing me more money to clean up the mess they made.
Description of Work: The estimate was for $750, to repair 6 leaking joints in a copper gutter and correct the slope. The company agreed not to charge for the 'work' performed, so the final cost was $0 but read on. For $750 I expected, and the quote stated, that the gutters would by soldered if at all possible. If soldering was not possible then silicone repair would be performed.

THE HOMEOWNER HAD UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS FOR REPAIRS TO 50-PLUS YEAR OLD COPPER GUTTERS. RICHARDS ROOFING & EXTERIORS CLEANED ALL DEBRIS FROM THE GUTTERS (GUTTERS WERE FULL OF LEAVES AND DEBRIS, A SIGN OF HOMEOWNER NEGLECT). RICHARDS ROOFING & EXTERIORS SEALED THE SEAMS PER CONTRACT*. DUE TO DISSATISFACTION OF THE HOMEOWNER, RICHARDS ROOFING VOIDED THE CONTRACT AND CHARGED $O.OO FOR 6 MAN HOURS OF RICHARDS ROOFING TIME! RICHARDS ROOFING & EXTERIORS, INC. FEELS THE POOR REPORT FILED IS UNFAIR AND SHOULD BE DISREGARDED BY FUTURE CUSTOMERS. * THE SIGNED CONTRACT SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT THE SEAMS WOULD BE SEALED IF SOLDER WAS NOT POSSIBLE.

In the process of having gutter covers installed, I learned that this section of roof had some damage and called this company based on Angie's list reports. Someone came out to give me a bid, but didn't have his ladder so he had to come back another day. I didn't hear from him again until I received the estimate in the mail. I would like to have met with him directly for the estimate because I had questions about other sections of the roof and some leaks. I called the office a few times to ask these other questions. The receptionist helped somewhat, but again I would like to have spoken to the estimator and/or owner. Eventually, I decided to have the work done anyway. The workers were courteous and professional, and the roof looks very good. The portion of the roof that meets the gutter was not aligned because the roof itself had a slight angle. When they realized this, they let me know and were willing to redo this section and make it flush with the gutter.
Description of Work: A section of low-sloping roof was replaced, along with some rotted decking boards.

I called the company because of the leak in the roof. I made the call in the morning. The gentleman I spoke to said he would be by the house that evening to look at the roof and drop the findings in the mail the next day. A week later, I called to find out the results because we had not received anything in the mail. The person who answered the phone said the man I spoke to was on vacation. She took my name and number and said someone would call me back to discuss. That was about 3 weeks ago and I never heard from the company again.

I obtained 6 bids for this project. Three were from companies on Angie's list. Four bids were closely grouped and two were significantly less. Richards' bid was among the higher group. What distinguished them during the bidding phase is that their salesman followed up and eventually offered a substantially upgraded shingle for the same price as their original quote. It is a beautiful product. The job was performed during the hottest part of the summer, and was delayed by rain on some days. The crew started very early each morning and quit for the day in early afternoon. They all spoke English and were good to deal with. Their foreman, Derrick, was exceptional. He was very hard-working, knowledgeable and personable, and I felt that he always had our best interests in mind. Everyday, he informed me what they were doing and why. I was concerned that the trash dumpster and the weight of the shingle delivery truck might damage our concrete driveway. To address those concerns, Richards used a rubber-tired dumpster and had the shingles delivered in several partial truck loads. We had no noticeable damage to the driveway. The crew did a good job of protecting the shrubbery and air conditioning units, and they cleaned up the yard each day before leaving the site. A couple of very minor accidental dings to the exterior of the house that occurred during the job were promptly repaired.
Description of Work: Company performed a complete re-roofing job on our house. This included removing the old shingles, reflashing skylights and other roof penetrations, installing new metal roof vents and lead plumbing vent boots, installing membrane roofing on a couple of areas, and installing new tar paper and asphalt shingles on the entire house. It also included replacing a very small amount of damaged roof sheathing.

The roofing crew and foreman were very friendly and customer oriented. The foreman was very conscientious and wanted to do a good job. Overall, the finished roof installation and a small repair to the decking was a good job. However, the scheduling of the roofing job did not go smoothly. Twice the job was scheduled and no crew arrived, and no one called. The job was eventually started five weeks after the first scheduled time. In my discussions with the salesman, I told him that I wanted the shingles applied by the stair step method recommended by major shingle manufacturers to minimize any color variation from bundle to bundle. The salesman said that this was the method they used to apply shingles. Instead, the shingles were applied from the bottom of the roof to the top. This is the racking method and has the potential of producing a non-uniform colored roof. The lesson learned here is to write everything in the contract and discuss the contract with the roofing crew foreman. During the job, at the end of a particular workday, the plywood deck was left exposed where the roof meets a vertical wall. That night it rained three inches and there would have been severe water damage if there had been a blowing rain. After the old roof was removed, I thought a cast iron vent pipe had been damaged because it was leaning and moved when I pushed on it. The owner of the company refused to pay for any damages even before I had the pipe inspected by a plumber. The company advertises that it has liability insurance but, apparently, does not want to use it. Some members of the crew were day laborers although the company advertises that our crews are ours. One of the day laborers was careless and scuffed paint on new siding, walked through flower beds and bent a gutter. The company also advertises that a project supervisor will make daily inspections of the work in progress, as well as a final inspection of the completed roof work and clean-up. The project supervisor never inspected our roof. On the invoice, there was a charge for overhead and profit which I was not told about beforehand. The owner gave his explanation for the charge and said the company was doing me a favor by only charging me as much as it did and he didn t even know why we were having this discussion. The total bill for the job was approximately $6300. I spoke to the owner twice and during our discussions he was arrogant and rude. For this reason alone, I would not recommend this company.

They initially gave me an estimate to repair a leak. When several other roofers told me I needed to replace the entire roof, I called this company, asked them to take another look and told them what the other roofers had told me. It took several weeks to get a response. When someone finally came by, he was very nice and professional. An estimate (the second) arrived in the mail 1-2 weeks later, and again, it was to fix the leak. In the meantime, another leak developed in a completely different part of my roof. I don't trust this company's recommendation and I while I appreciate their giving me a low bid, I don't think patching the leak would have solved my problem. I needed a new roof. I hired someone else. ($700.00)

They rapidly provided a detailed proposal and answered all questions. They rearranged their schedule to best mesh with my other home improvements. The installation foreman/crew were very friendly, capable, efficient, and customer oriented. They made a potentially anxious day totally uneventful. Unfortunately, there was a rare shingle quality problem identified after installation. Richard's Roofing was a little too reluctant to accept this and insisted the issues were normal. However, they concurrently coordinated with the shingle manufacturer (TAMKO). TAMKO instantly stood behind their product, concurred there was a problem, and offered to redo the entire job free of charge (they even upgraded the shingles from 3-tab to architectural with longer life, to compensate me for the inconvenience). I really commend TAMKO for their very positive response. Richard's Roofing installed the new shingles within a week and did an excellent job. The finished product is very high quality and looks great. I learned two things about 3-tab shingle installation (my initial shingles) that others should consider: (1) Ensure the "stair step" method will be used to install the shingles (don't use "racking" methods) and (2) ensure the shingles will be effectively mixed to avoid color shade blotches. Note that these are not important if using architectural shingles (my final shingles) instead of 3-tab shingles. "Racking" methods are accepted within the roofing community (they produce a mechanically sound roof) and are commonly used to reduce installation time. However, "racking methods produce pronounced vertical lines from gutter to the peak every shingle width. They take many months (years?) to disappear. Only the "stair step" method is recommended by major shingle manufacturing companies. Color shade differences between different production lots are also very noticeable if the shingles are not effectively mixed. Again, the resulting color blotches may disappear as the shingles fade with age.

We contacted this company because of all the stellar reviews on Angie's list. When we initially contacted Rich, a team was out to bid our project promptly. However, aside from the initial contact with an office person telling them to come to our house, no one inquired as to what exactly we wanted to have done. We were sent a bid in the mail and, since no one spoke with us as to what we wanted, that bid did not include all the work we needed to have done. We called about adding this work, spoke with Rich, and someone was supposed to come back to bid the additional work. I'm not sure if this return visit ever happened, but after repeated calls as to the whereabouts of this new bid, we have gotten no response. I guess they don't need/want the work after all.

Requested a bid from Richards Roofing and had a detailed proposal within a few days. Called them with a few questions which were answered promptly. After we accepted the bid, and selected single color, it was about 4 or 5 weeks before we received a call saying when the work was scheduled. The workers did not show up the morning scheduled and I called to check. Was told they were a bit behind and the materials would likely be delivered that day and work would proceed the next day. Materials were delivered that day, workers showed up the next day at 6:30 am and proceeded with tear-off, roofing was done by about noon. Chimney flashing and fascia replacement were finished about a week later.
Description of Work: Installed new roof (tear off of all old roofing material) using 30 yr architectural asphalt shingles. Also installed ridge vent and replaced some rotten fascia at front of house.

Originally, they gave us a bid to repair/replace guttering that had originally been installed poorly by another company. The bid was very reasonable, and the man who came out was very knowledgeable. After much discussion, we also decided to have a netting put over the gutters to prevent them from clogging. They did the work quickly and professionally and cleaned everything up. All the concerns that we had for the original poor work were corrected.

Rich was quick and prompt in coming out to give me an estimate. It seemed on the high side, but I was willing to pay a bit more given all the good reviews on Angie's List. A worker came out about two weeks later to do the work. Unfortunately, there were two problems: he used two different color caulkings. One was a light gray and matched the house reasonably well, but the other was black and looked terrible. When I contacted Rich about this, he offered to not charge me for this part of the work to cover my cost in time, and money to paint over the black caulk. The other problem had to do with the drip edges-- in the front of the house, the drip edges did not extend to the corner where most of the water damage was occurring, and in the back of the house, only 8 feet was installed, instead of the 20 ft as agreed upon in the contract. I contacted Rich about this and did not get a response, but a worker came out about two weeks later and remedied the situation. It's hard for me not to be disappointed in the quality of the work that they did initially, but the situation is resolved to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: I had two custom aluminum eave drip edges installed in areas of my gutters where the water was back-splashing and causing damage to my eaves. I also had two lead flashings replaced on roof exhaust pipes, and caulking applied between my brick and wood siding where rain water was getting in.

With all the rain this spring, Richards was behind schedule, and a small project like mine certainly could not have been a priority. It took several weeks for them to start work after I had submitted a deposit. It was well worth the wait, however. The men did an excellent job. Not only was the quality of the work outstanding, but each person involved was professional in attitude and concerned about every detail, including clean-up. I would recommend the company for any project, large or small.
