The entire process was very positive! Jim was diligent about following up on our phone calls, texts & emails re. the job start status and keeping us informed when they was a delay due weather. The workers on the job site were very professional and did a fantastic job from start to finish. Only had one very minor issue that was brought to Jim's attention which he addressed the following day. It was a pleasure to do business with this company and we've requested another quote for additional work. The Hungry Carpenter earned his spot at the top of our list for "go to" contractors for both large and small jobs. And... the finished deck looks fantastic!

Hungry Carpenters was actually the fifth contractor we called but we are thrilled we did! Jim came out and not only pointed out details that other contractors failed to mention but was completely polite and professional the entire time. We knew the costs up front and he was always prompt to contact us when he had news or discovered a problem as it happened with us. When the old deck was dropped, they discovered the band boards were completely rotted as the previous builders did not have any weather seals in place! The Hungry Carpenters not only replaced those boards, but added weathering and replaced the other bits of bad wood as well that were covered up by the old deck! We ended up with a beautiful, true 16 x 20 rectangular cedar deck and a better house than when they arrived! Highly recommended, I would hire again in an instant!
Description of Work: Our deck was at least 20 years old and was in bad shape. Our old deck was roughly 16 x 24 feet in size and due to us being on a hill, one story up. The boards were rotting and nobody felt safe standing on it. We could see by looks alone that it needed to be replaced. Our deck was also irregularly shaped and even though it was long, it was angled and a quarter of it was never constructed. We think on purpose from the last builder who seemed to use scrap wood to build the last six feet of it. It had also been improperly built with many out of code issues.

Jim and his team were professional, punctual, and hard-working. They were also friendly and polite and did not waste any time getting the job done. There were a couple of minor adjustments that needed to be made after completion of the work and Jim, himself, came back and took care of them. Jim is very personable and represents the company well. We would definitely recommend them for this type of work.

The reason i have waited so long to write this review is that i have been without a computer for 6 months. I feel the need to give this company an undesirable review as i feel the owner is not honest, is reluctant to fix mistakes and lacks professionalism. If you do use this company, thoroughly inspect before signing off with payment. Last summer I contracted Hungry Carpenter to remove my old cedar deck and replace with a new composite one. Work began mid July and was completed within a few weeks. I found the pricing to only be slightly lower than the highest bidder. The reviews that i read were favorable and all negativity seemed to be a lack of professionalism and/or getting back to customers. From the beginning - there were mistakes made. First, the owner never reviewed the plans and design for the new deck with me. Since the only design change was to extend the deck 1 foot further out into the yard with a cutout to accommodate a large tree, I was not too concerned. However, the stairs were built next to the yard rather than the house (as it was in the old deck). This was not discovered until I came home from work and found the stairs bolted to the patio. It was not what i wanted but I felt that undoing the mistake would be more trouble than it was worth. There was also some damage to the j-molding around the patio doors when the crew removed the old deck. When inspecting the deck afterwards, Jim assured me it would be fixed. However, he tried patching the molding rather than replacing it. He eventually agreed to replace it after being told his repair was unacceptable (note the final payment wasn't made yet). Jim did replace the J-molding. About 2 weeks after paying Jim for the balance of the work, one of the poles in the stair railing started falling out. It appeared to me that it was cut just a tad too short. I contacted Jim on Sept 6 and sent pictures. Jim was contacted again on Sept 12 as he took no action from the previous contact. Again, he said he would come by and take a look at it. I contacted him again on Sept 19. On Sept 20th, he contacted me back to say he stopped by and discovered that the pole was not cut at the right angle. He did not have the proper tools and would come back. I have not heard from Jim since nor has the pole been fixed. There were actually 3 that kept falling. I was able to rearrange them and get 2 of the 3 to stay in place. There were other issues pointed out to me by others. Since I did not catch these in the inspection process, I will not give details. Pictures attached of pole and the patched JMolding fix that Jim tried to offer as "best he could do".

The owner was nice. However, it took from June until the end of October to get the project done, when we were told it would be much faster than that. Once the project was underway, several corrections had to be made due to significant changes being made without first consulting us.

This project was delayed because of the permit process. Clayton took for ever to approve the plans for 5' x 4' deck with steps going down. Once we had the permit we got the job scheduled and completed in a reasonable time. Turned out great and the customer was very happy. Thanks Jim

The work was done quickly and better than expected. The hungry carpenter was able to get the carport repaired and it looked so nice. The idea he had with the cedar posts and rail along with the black aluminum spindles just came together so nice. I could not have asked for more

Owner showed up and was very nice and gave me some options on how to go about a possible repair. Never heard from him again. Could be from a variety of reasons, but responsibility is my number one requirement. If somebody can't do something as simple as emailing or calling, I don't want that person doing any work for me - especially something like the job I needed done.

Some of the boards warped. I called and eventually what I told them to do was just to drop me off some new boards and I would put them up myself. It was inconvenient trying to get together with him and that sort of thing so I said just drop them off and I will do it. It is that treated wood which has a tendency to warp anyway. To get a better grade from me he could have been more eager to replace the boards. It was not evasive or anything like that but it just wasn't suiting me -- I wanted him to do it now and get it over with. I understand people are in business and can't drop everything for something like that, because it wasn't very many. It was a good price.

This was a great experience. I went through the process of getting 5 bids for this project. I am certainly not one to simply look for the lowest bid. I rely a lot on how the professional comes across in presenting himself, his company and his bid. Hungry Carpenter was not the low bid, but very very near the low bid. I would not have hired the firm that gave the lowest bid...just didn't have a good feeling. Three of my bids were above 14,000. Jim, and Hungry Carpenter had many many positive ratings on Angie's List and the ones that were negative, mostly, were typical of some of the useless negatives ratings that appear in Angie's List. They started the project within a week or two of my acceptance and I have to say I was so happy with both their skill level hard work. It was done basically in a week and one day. The finished product is just wonderful. Very sturdy and strong. The building inspector and my neighbors all commented on the good quality. Although this was a large deck, it was relatively simple after they removed my old deck. There were no stairs and railings and balusters were only on two sides. I am so happy and would recommend Jim and Hungry Carpenter for any deck project.

Received 4 quotes on this project. Jim wasn't the most expensive but wasn't the least expensive either. He replaced new deck with a 14x14 deck with a 5x5 landing with stairs going down to lower level. Added lighting to deck and replaced sliding glass door. The deck turned out better than expected. We plan on using him again in the spring to install zip up under decking system.

Went well once the weather cooperated. The tough part was puling up the old concrete fence post footings. Ten of them had to be replaced along with the posts. Not a lot of skill or a lot of materials were needed for this work, just dedicated labor. The carpenter folk were friendly and informative, easy to get along with. They took care not to intrude on the neighbor's property. I had gotten two other contractors to come look at what was needed and neither were excited about doing it, or were responsive to calls later. So, I was pleased that Hungry Carpenter was willing, that they were professional and friendly, and the price charged was sure a lot less than a replacement fence would have cost. I will likely need additional service in a couple more years as more posts rot, but I have these folks to turn to when the time comes. I recommend Hungry Carpenter for this type of work, and probably for other things as well but I only have experience as noted above. PS I interacted with this contractor through an Angie's List DEAL for fence repair. They were an unknown to me otherwise, but had a good rating.
Description of Work: Mainly replaced rotting fence posts. It is an elderly fence in poor shape, but I didn't want the cost of a new fence. Ten of my posts were in the process of falling over due to their bases being rotted off. The worse sections had ivy and taller greenery growing on them, it held those sections up, sorta, but that had to be removed as part of the repair job.
