It was pretty bad. Sam spent a lot of time on the phone and the rest of the time complaining about having a young wife who wouldn't work and spent all day doing games on her phone. I just got to where I spent all my time indoors and didn't go out to see how things were going. He couldn't get his cell phone to ring and he panicked and asked me if he could use my phone to call his phone because he couldn't get thru to his wife. Hello, you just talked to her 5 minutes ago and she's sitting home, what's the emergency???? Didn't line the boards up, saw blade was totally dull and chewing up the wood. Left some spaces that had to be filled with wood putty. It was a disaster........a $2500 disaster. I just think we are too nice because I don't know of anybody else who would have excepted this deck in this kind of shape. I just wanted them all gone.
Description of Work: I am really starting to think there are just no decent contractors out there any more. Specifically hired this company because he states he has 8 workers so we assumed he doesn't hire any subcontractors. Don't ever assume anything........ask!!!! He bid over $3000 which was fairly high considering he was just replacing the deck floor that had rotted. He gave us a "10% Angie's list discount". We got two other bids and he agreed to come down to $2500. He had lumber delivered and then called saying worker would be by to start on the deck. The following day this 300 lb. 55 year old chain smoker shows up to start on the deck. All he had was a crowbar and hammer. He told us he has never worked for Jim Watson before. He spent the majority of his time on the phone with his young wife and had to call to wake his 5 year old up for school. He complained non-stop about his bad lot in life and the fact that he couldn't find a job. He asked me how much we were paying for this job and gave me several business cards to pass out. The whole situation was bizarre to say the least. He ended up using a tool we had bought "the deck wrecker". Without this tool there is no way this overweight, older gentleman could have finished this deck. It was really a two-person job because it was a fairly large deck and it was nailed down with twisted nails (which made it twice as hard to get up). Jim Watson kept calling him telling him he needs to speed t hings up. I kept thinking this guy was going to have a heart attack. My husband and I must have suckers written all over our face or something. We always seem to draw the losers. I really think our problem is we're too nice. Sam showed up with a circular saw that the blade was so dull it was literally chewing up the boards. I told him the blade was dull and got no response. He was using our deck railing as a cutting tool (saw horse). The left over part of the 2x6's would fall over the railing leaving huge gauges in our steps (which had to be replaced). I don't blame the worker as this all falls back on the owner's shoulders.Jim Watson rarely showed up and if he did he stayed less than 2 minutes. I ended up cleaning up the majority of stuff myself as Sam left it in a total mess. Jim did show up at the end mostly for his check as he didn't come prepared to do anything either. Same left the fascia board on the deck about 1" longer then the rest of the fascia and we fixed that by just rounding off where the edges meet. The angled cut joining the two fascia board together looks like a squirrel has been knawing on it. The blade was so dull it just tore the board to pieces. He tried to sand it and then filled it with wood putty. You can get the picture, I'm sure. I WOULD NOT HIRE OR RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE and if you decide to hire them ask questions about who will be doing the job. I'm starting to think you have to be a total jerk in order to get these guys to do something because they just want to take the money and run.

Response from The Hungry Carpenter LLC
The worker (Sam) was sub contracter that I used on this job, he is know longer working for my company and I do have 8 carpenters professional carpenters that I employ. Sam was given a chance to work for me from a company to help out. I am no longer helping that company give people chance to work for me. The job was done in a timely manner and we cleaned up the area.

We found Jim's company, The Hungry Carpenter, on Angie's List. Jim responded quickly and professionally to our call. He immediately made a date to come out to our home for a free estimate. He was running a few minutes behind on the day of the estimate and actually had the courtesy to call and and let us know that he would be a few minutes late. After we discussed the scope of work, he e-mailed me the scope of work with the quoted price within a day or two. He never told me that it might cost us more if there were any surprises once he started to dig out the posts. He stayed within our family's budget and was confident he could do the job. Our family was leaving on a short vacation and we told him we would touch base with him upon our return. When we arrived back in town, we e-mailed him to let him know that we were back in town. He called us to set the date for the following week, which we appreciated. When Jim came over to fix our fence, he came across some more work than what he expected. He never asked us for more money and/or complained that the job was going to take him longer due to the unforeseen work. He worked hard at our house and the end result looks wonderful. We would definitely call The Hungry Carpenter for any future work in or around our home. We have already given his name and number to a couple of our neighbors.
Description of Work: We have a black metal fence that looks similar to wrought iron. This fence is the surrounds our in-ground pool. Our yard sits at the bottom of our subdivision and has had water issues (drainage issues) in the past. We spent a lot of time re-routing the water to correct these issues. However, during those years, our fence started to shift and began to become unhinged in areas. Jim unhinged my fence and removed all the cement in the large posts. He poured new cement on the large posts and reattached the fence so it was even (straight). The gate also would not close and after Jim fixed the fence, the gate now closes on its own after it is opened.

I had just bought a house and was closing in one week and I needed a privacy fence. I called 3 companies. One company did not respond and one company's quote was very high. I then called The Hungry Carpenter and the owner, Jim Watson, told me he could meet me the next day. We were to meet at 9:00 AM at my property. I arrived at 8:45 and he was waiting for me. Jim was very personable. He walked the property with me and reviewed my survey. He also listened to my concerns about the fence. I had a small dog plus small grandchildren I needed to keep inside the fence. I wanted the fence started and completed as soon as I closed on my house. I also needed the quote right away to present it to the Home Owners Association and get approval. Jim e-mailed me the quote that evening. He provided me with the information I needed to get the HOA to approve the fence. Jim started building the fence the day after I closed on my house. Jim was at my property when the materials were delivered and made sure they were not in my way. "After" Jim had dug all the holes, I changed my mind on the placement of part of the fence. I explained my concerns to Jim and he was very understanding. He took it all in stride and filled in the holes and re-dug them where I decided I wanted them. There was a slight charge as he had to rent the Auger again, but I felt that was fair and the changes were my decision and no fault of his. As the fence went up, Jim and I discussed the placement of the gates and hardware. My fence was finished in 4 days. It is a very good looking sturdy fence and Jim made sure that the pickets were very tight so that my small dog can not escape. I am very happy with the quality of work that Jim Watson provided me.
Description of Work: 150 Feet of 6ft Privacy fencing. Responsible for calling Dig Rite, digging holes, setting post and pouring concrete. Assemble the fence and attach the Pickets. Build gates and attach hardware. Cut back some brush and trees for the placement of the fence. Remove all debris and clean up surrounding area at end of job

Jim was very professional. I expected a bunch of people to perform the work to be done but was pleasantly surprised that he did the work himself and did it well. Once the permits were authorized he began work that same day and finished a day ahead of schedule. The deck looks great and sturdy. Jim did a great job cleaning up. I would recommend him in a heartbeat and will definitely consider him for any other future projects.

The work was fabulous. The price was great (He had the lowest estimate of everyone). He was prompt and professional. He was also very personable. Jim quickly called me after receiving my email, and came to my house the next day to provide an estimate. He was very professional and friendly, and I received the final estimate via email the following day. He gave us a fair price, and completed the job this morning. Based on the estimate he was going to paint just the porch floor, but went ahead and painted the steps too. From first contacting Jim and getting the job done, the whole process took just 1 week. He did a great job and we would hire him again!

Jim met me and sent me the proposal the next day. I did have to make a deposit for the materials. I had another bid that was very high and went with Jim. The work was performed by Mike and he was professional and completed the work quickly, and well. I had my deck railing replaced and the entire back privacy fenceboards replaced. My deck was also powerwashed and stained. I'm extremely pleased.

We are very pleased with the result. The materials used for the deck seem to be good quality and are more attractive than what was replaced. JIm was very good to work with; he came through on his promises. the work was done efficiently, and most of all he was most cooperative and patient with the frustrating approval process of the condo association. Even though our project was a small one, Jim gave us all the consideration that could be expected by a much larger client. I strongly recommend him.

Jim is a really nice guy, very personable and easy to talk to. Although he seemed to know what he was doing, I've since been told the porch work was sloppy. While just an opinion, it comes from someone I respect, so I choose not to ignore. It took much longer than expected to get the 2 jobs done, in part, due to my work hours. It does not appear there is a regular work crew, a question I should have asked to ensure there was skin in the game. Job site clean-up was not great as I had to sweep and police both my porch and driveway. I picked up way too many nails and bits of aluminum for a job of this size, either of which could have injured my dogs, damaged my car tires or hurt me. While I recognize it's not possible to pick up every last scrap from the yard or garden, I should not have found debris on my porch or in my driveway; I certainly should not have found cigarette butts on my porch or in my garden. Jim never followed up with me to find out if I was satisfied or to give me the opportunity to ask questions, disappointing as these are customer service basics.

They came out on New Year's Day to finish it up which was very nice of them. They applied for all the permits and posted them on the front window. It went very smoothly. He met us at the hardwood store and we picked out what we wanted. We got a composite instead of wood and we got to pick out the colors. He let me be very picky and we got exactly what we wanted. I kept apologizing and he said that he wanted me to get what I wanted. He didn't guide us. There were some problems because of the weather and he wasn't able to come out on some of the weekends that he was supposed to do it. He wanted to make sure that he had it finished by New Year's so he actually came out and worked eight hours on New Year's Day to finish it up for us. It is gorgeous and absolutely excellent. We had eight different bids and they were low to middle. They were lower for the same materials so their price was excellent. He was the lowest on the materials we wanted. They came back New Year?s afternoon and the yard was picked up spic and span.

My fence was falling down in the back, and my porch steps were dangerous. Jim came out and assessed the situation, called me back with estimate for supplies and labor, and said he could do the job on saturday, He showed up early and completed the job by mid-afternoon. Because of my bad hip I did'nt look at the work that closely, just knew my steps were no longer shakey, and my neighbor e-mailed me that from her side the fence looked great. Clean-up was meticulous. Very happy with this experience.
Description of Work: I needed some repair on a fence and deck steps, and speed was essential as my surgery date was approaching. Jim was knowledgeable, speedy, very congenial and trustworthy. he performed the work as promised within a few days. And my dogs liked him too! Few companies can respond this quickly, and many won't accept a small job or just make excuses about how busy they are. A nice and competent young man worth hiring again.

The pool was installed later than we anticipated and we had a graduation party planned already. Tom and his crew worked so hard and had the deck complete for our party. Tom always called and left messages giving us updates on supply orders, what they were working on and what the goals were for each work day. The deck and pool look awesome and we love it. It looks like an inground pool. They even did a fabulous job matching the color of the composite decking to our existing deck. They sometimes worked late taking advantage of the good weather days. They were so kind that my husband and I bought them pizzas one night while they worked late. I would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: This company accomodated our every need. We had a company install an above ground pool in our back yard on a hillside. The pool is partially inground. Tom and his workman built a large deck around the entire pool and connected it by steps to our already existing deck.
