Description of Work: I asked Frontenac Engineering to provide an independent assessment of the interior structure of my home. I had noticed some cracks in my drywall in a couple of spots along load-bearing walls. If there was a problem that needed fixing, I wanted recommendations on what to do and who could do the work. Mr. Calkins was prompt and professional in providing his assessment. Luckily, I have no significant issue to correct. I appreciated the time and expertise he provided in his assessment. I would not hesitate to recommend their services to others.

Description of Work: Cory was very professional, prompt, and courteous. He provided us with professional plans to reinforce the structural integrity of our floor joists, and we were able to perform the repairs ourselves.

Great!
Description of Work: We had an engineer come out to give us advice on a vertical crack in our foundation. I called at 4pm and the gentleman stopped by our house on his way home from the office! Very knowledgable and advised us that the extremely hot dry summer last year can cause foundations to shift, causing cracks. He reassured us that everything looked fine and we did not need to pursue repair at this point, but let us know what we should look out for as far as when/if we might need to repair. He put our minds at ease and seemed extremely trustworthy and knowledgable.

Excellent work and recommendations! We were most pleased with having an independent evaluator give us a written report for the buyer of our home. He responded quickly and came in well under comparable engineering firms.

Great, with out any problems.
Description of Work: We need our foundation worked on and before we had this done, we contacted them to determine what really needed to be done. They recommended someone close to our area who they had worked with in past. We followed their advise and everything was great. When the foundation guy was working on project, they were happy to communicate with them.

I called Frontenac Engineering because they were on Angie's list. The person that answered the phone was polite and we discussed what service I was looking for. I explained and she told me Kent MacPeek would call me back within the next 24hrs. Kent called me back the same day I placed the call for the services of his firm. We agreed that it was a problem he thought was worth looking into because he couldn't say whether or not it was structural or not without seeing it. We made an appointment for 9/9/11 and he got here on time, was very polite and professional and went directly to work on the problem of determining whether or not the problem was structural. Had a crack in hallway ceiling(10 ft long) and wanted to know if it was a structural or cosmetic problem. Kent analyzed the problem and indicated it was caused by someone walking on the suspended roof joist above the crack. The weight of the person on the joist caused the joist to touch the drywall attached to the hallway wall about 1 inch from the joist and the pressure from the weight on the joist caused the crack. He said it was cosmetic and if I wanted it fixed he told me, in detail, what approach to take. Asked if I would like to have the names and phone numbers of professionals he had previously done work with as a result of his analysis and I said yes since I had none of my own. As promised he called back this afternoon with three names and numbers for me to proceed with the process of estimating, choosing and repairing the defect. It was a very good experience and worth the price to know the house was not going to fall down on me.

I checked Angie's List to read the comments on a couple of different companies and Mosby Building Arts, whose staff is always willing to give suggestions/referrals by phone and are great (Scott Mosby has a very helpful local Saturday afternoon radio show), McGinnis, had the comments that impressed me most, but the person they all referred to was Kent MacPeek. In more recent comments, it was mentioned that Kent no longer worked for McGinnis. I couldn't find his name on any other companies comments, but, as I've done in the past, I called another company for a recommendation and to my happy surprise, they gave me Kent's name, his company and phone number. I called the number and the person answering the phone was very nice and took a message, and said he'd call me back that day - she even called back and left me a message to let me know that he wasn't actually coming into the office that day, but would contact me the next day, which he did. We made an appt for a couple days later. He was actually a few minutes later than scheduled, but called to let me know the last job ran long, where he was and that he'd be there soon. He was no more than ten minutes late, if that. He looked at some cracks on the outside of the house, then proceeded to the basement. Unfortunately, the news for us was what we expected, very very bad (the worst he'd seen in his 25 years!) and the cost to repair would possibly be as much as the house was worth - it's not a large house and the neighborhood isn't all that wonderful either. He suggested that we sell it "as is" and gave me some suggestions in regards to what type of people to contact to find out some info on comps, land value, etc.
Description of Work: Kent examined the basement of a house that had extensive horizontal cracks on three of the four walls, and gave me his opinion on their condition and what possible repairs could be made.
