The entire improvement of the home's exterior took approximately 6 weeks. Weather and scheduling various crews affected the time table. However, estimated time frame was 12 weeks, so I considered this work done in an extremely prompt manner. Initial contract signed on 4/25/13. Roof repair done in 4 days (5/22/13 - 5/25/13). Painting done in 2 days (6/6/13 - 6/7/13). Posts and railings installed in 2 days (6/5/13 - 6/6/13). Siding and capping all openings done in 7 days (7/19/13 - 7/28/13). Guttering done in 2 days (7/1/13 - 7/2/13). Staining of decking posts and railings done in 1 day (7/2/13). So, all work had been completed so that I could inspect it on 7/3/13). Each crew was very professional in their work ethic and speed. They were very knowledgeable about their products and installation. They cleaned up well on completion of work. Scott Smith (Contractor) answered my phone calls promptly with courtesy and information about dates crews would be working on my house. I was not able to be on site through the entire project, but Scott kept me well informed as to what was happening when. He personally inspected work done throughout the process and upon completion. I would DEFINITELY hire this company again to do other renovations/improvements to my home.
Description of Work: New roof (removed all existing shingles, installed all new drip edge, installed felt, installed ice shield in valleys, installed 30 year shingles, installed new guttering and leaf guard). Put new vinyl siding on the entire house and cap trim on all openings. Painted foundation, porch ceiling, porch underneath and chimney. Installed new support beams for existing deck and new posts and railings. Stained railings and beams. Replaced three broken storm windows.

SmithCo Exteriors had reasonable prices. Their response was extremely prompt and courteous. I was given several different options on how to handle my siding problems. I was given recommendations that turned out to be superb and I was treated like an extremly valued customer although my project was not a huge one.The owner came to my house for the quote and he was superb and the crew that came out was very responsive to my needs and the weather was bad so they were very good at communicating with me about when they would come and other information.

Overall the quality of their work was very good. However, their committments to the promised timeline were extremely poor (months late in completion, due to "other" projects that they held in higher priority to our home). Additionally, the workmen were very late upon committed arrival "every" day that they were at our home. They were difficult to talk with as they always seemed hurried; therefore, there were many small issues we never got addressed. On a brighter note, several months after the completed job, we had mortar loosen in one of our floor stones, and they were very prompt on that small repair.
Description of Work: This company built a home addition (sunroom) for us. It involved windows, stone flooring and duct work.

It did take a while for their supplier to get the raw materials to them but once they hit the job site here, things went smooth and fast. My neighbors house needed no tear off but was almost 3x the surface area as my job and due to very uneven terrain, they had to set up schaffolds to reach most of it. Still, they finished it quickly. My home required tearing off the old siding which was all hauled off with no "pieces parts" left in the yard. Overall, both jobs took 10 working days and was done to both our complete satisfaction!! The material they used on our homes is beautiful and the lines are straight and even. The only way it could have been better is if it had been done for free :)
Description of Work: A very close friend and neighbor, along with myself, needed to get our houses sided. I had a North wall recently sided by Booger County that was so poorly done I had to get it replaced. Many of the pieces were not even attached to the house and some would not stay interlocked in any kind of wind. Also several pieces were not overlapped, just butted up against each other. My neighbor needed 3 sides of his house done, North, East and West, 2 story peaks on the ends. My North wall had a 2 story peak and then a single story section. I called ABC Siding first since we both had decided to do seamless. I was rather surprised that they refused to even talk to me since my neighbor would not be present at the time of the estimate even though I knew all the details of his needs. I work from home so I was going to be on hand to take care of things but that was not sufficient for them. I then called Smithco and had Scott out here almost immediately.

I visited the showroom to see a casement window and then signed on to have the work done. I was told it was about a 2 day job and it could take about 8 weeks with scheduling for the job to be completed. I said as long as it was done by Thanksgiving, I would be happy. Mike McDaniel called within a week to come out for final measurements to place the order for the windows. To my surprise, Mike called and set up the work for the first week in October. The crew was very courteous. Plastic was laid down in every room that they replaced windows. They left the work areas neat every day they were here. It did take a bit longer than 2 days because of rain, but there isn't much you can do about the weather. When the work was completed, Mike showed me how to pop the windows out for cleaning which was much easier than I expected. Everyone who has seen the new windows thinks they look great. We had about 5 quotes before contacting SmithCo. and hands down, SmithCo. was the most professional and thorough on presentation. Scott did not rush us to sign a contract as most others did, and the prices are reasonable. They have a referral program and I know of people that may be interested in having work done. After telling a co-worker about them, he has already contacted SmithCo and has signed on for new windows. If I ever need any additional work done, I will contact SmithCo.
Description of Work: Requested quote online for replacement windows. Scott came out to the house and looked at the windows in question. He had an example of the window he recommended, with color selections. Scott then measured our windows, showed us photos of completed jobs, testimonial letters and gave us an extensive list of referrals to contact to see completed work. We visited the addresses and liked what we saw. We decided to replace windows on the Southside of the house that had sun damage, add vinyl wrapping to the windows that were not being replaced, and wrap the garage doors.

We got bids from two companies after researching window replacement information. The bid from SmithCo was less expensive than the other but that's not the main reason we selected them. They had a window sample for us to see and try. They gave us a long list pf previous and current jobs and invited us to check them out, which we did. They only required 1/3 down payment at the time we signed the contract. The other company bidding for our job wanted full payment up front, had no window samples and could not supply a reference list. Made our decision pretty simple. The windows arrived well within the guesstimated time frame and they called to make an appointment for installation. The three man crew was very efficient. They worked well together and had all 19 old windows removed and new ones in place in one day. Another 1/3 payment was paid at the beginning of the installation. They insulated around the outside of each window and made sure they were level and very secure. The windows were sealed on the inside with clear no-odor silicone. The next day they custom made the outside vinyl wrap for each window and every window was carefully caulked, making sure all seams were sealed. Our old shutters were removed and the six new shutters were installed which involved drilling into brick. Our deck cover needed more slope for drainage so they dropped the front edge 1.5" after removing the old rusty cover. They installed a new cover which also involved hand shaping flashing to fit against the house at the edge attached to the house. A very time consuming job. Final payment was made at the end of the job. We had one window latch that didn't work properly when the new windows were installed. A new latch was ordered immediately and approximately one week later they came by and installed the new latch. The crew was friendly and polite, took care around our yard and made sure they cleaned up all debris at the end of each day. They informed us of their work schedule so we knew what to expect. The whole job took 6 days to complete. We were very pleased with the job they did and would recommend them for sure!

They put in a new fireplace with extensive stonework around it. They were very meticulous and took a lot of pride in their work. They spent a lot of time up front making sure that they understood exactly what we wanted, and communicated the whole way through the project. They cleaned up each day and once the project was completed. The stonework is amazing, so if you are looking for anything with stone (interior or exterior), I would highly recommend them. They finished on time and on budget. While I wish it had cost less, you get what you pay for and we are very happy with the end result and the price was fair for the amount of work and materials involved. We could have done a cheaper fireplace but it would not have been nearly as nice. I highly recommend Scott Smith and his company.
Description of Work: They put in a ventless gas (propane) fireplace. It included building the support structure, wiring the fireplace up, attaching it to the propane supply, and creating a hearth, surround and "chimney" with cultured stone. They also put an outlet in the "mantel" (rock shelf) so that we could plug something in on our mantel.

My home was built in the late 60's and was in desperate need of updating. My sister and I lived together and started the process in 2005. We had the paneling painted in the family room and had the "front room" painted. We then proceeded to have the kitchen cabinets painted white, new flooring, new counter tops, and added cabinets to a "wasted space" area. That was all completed in November 2009. Sadly, my sister was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the spring of 2010 and passed away in September, just 19 days after her 69th birthday. Needless to say, I went into mourning and the last thing on my mind was this house. Finally, in March of this year I began to "live" again and knew that she would want me to carry on with our "master plan." I didn't know where to start and joined Angie's List. First I searched for concrete removal (the back porch), because I wanted to have a level floor. I widened my search and among the list I researched was Smith Co Exteriors. I called and Scott Smith made an appointment to see me the next day. My first impression of Scott was that he is a professional businessman and can see the "finished project" in his mind. When he told me that removing the concrete and replacing it wasn't a problem, and proceeded to explain what the room would look like when it was finished, I signed contract #1. In talking to Scott, I told him about my sister and that I have MS so I need my house to be MS user friendly. He looked at the two deep steps down to the enclosed porch and said, "I really think we should install a handrail for you." I never even thought of that. Like most features in this house, it had to be "custom made" and was done so by Duane. It is sturdy wood (because there wasn't wrought iron that would fit the space) and I love it. From that point on, I saw the genuine compassion Scott has and his active interest in each project that was going on here. He is a "detail" person. Anything that he saw that didn't meet his standards was "redone." Incidentally, those things were few and required minor changes. My first pleasant surprise was to have a level floor on the enclosed porch. It amazed me! Prior to this work, the slope was so bad that at the NW corner, I noticed water every time it rained, went outside and saw that the "floor" was lower than the ground! No more. Now that the floor is 4" above ground made my day. I think I probably drove Scott a little crazy, because I would have an idea and ask if "it" was possible. For instance, when we talked about the enclosed porch, I asked him if a ceiling fan could be installed. I had been told by other contractors that because the roof "slopes" a ceiling fan was out of the question. Scott studied the slope, measured, and said, "No problem." Duane gave me the size to look for and I found one I loved with a light. Also added a wall sconce to match. The original 9 windows on the porch were small and when the new triple slider Smithton white windows were installed, I couldn't believe how beautiful they are and how much light they added. Another eyesore on the porch was that the dryer vents out to the porch. Scott suggested enclosing it by "boxing" it in. It's really neat and a great place for decorating ideas. The chimney used to be a part of the west wall and now the walls are covered with insulated white vinyl, ceiling and walls painted white, and level floor carpeted with a neutral light brown. It is a tight weave and easy to care for. When it came to choosing the carpet for everything but the bedrooms, I dreaded the thought of having to go search for carpet, because those kinds of tasks can be fatiguing for me. I told Scott what I had in mind and Mary Martin brought me samples. I guess he read my mind, because the old, dark blue-grey carpet is gone, and has been replaced with a beautiful neutral called "butter pecan." Everything will go with it. On to the bathrooms. (Yes, I realize I should have had the carpet done last, but I didn't know at the time that Smith Co would be doing the bathrooms.) However, there is a protective covering over the carpet. When I asked Scott about updating the bathrooms, he showed me pictures of bathrooms his company had remodeled and I was sold. That's where Alex Marshall began to teach me a lot about remodeling! I had a vague idea of what I wanted and then after talking with him, again, instead of my having to go look for tile, he brought me samples of the colors I had in mind. He and his assistant, Allan, began the tear out and I didn't have a clue what the finished bathroom was going to look like. The sixty-ish style bathroom now looks new, modern, "user friendly" and has features that exceeded my expectations. I believe that Alex is creative and artistic. I am a visual learner and as I said, I had a hard time visualizing what it was going to look like. The tile design in the tub area is beautiful, has a large recessed soapbox, and at first I was going to go with a curved shower rod,but instead, chose clear glass sliding shower doors that have towel rods. I sure didn't want to "hide" the beautiful tile design with a shower curtain. I went with brushed nickel fixtures at Alex's suggestion because he told me they were much easier to keep clean. He was right. The drywall was replaced with new anti-mold, anti-moisture, drywall, tiled about half-way up, and the walls are painted a pale, pale blue. Light fixtures were replaced, a vent was installed (that thrilled me), the mirror replaced, the vanity was painted white and Alex found a piece of granite (at a bargain price!) to top it off that looks as though it was made to match the tile. As I said earlier, I probably frustrated Alex and Scott, because originally, I was going to "live with the old floor." But, of course, I changed my mind! The floor is tiled and I'm so glad I did that because Alex showed me where the floor was "soft" around the toilet. He replaced the sub-floor and old plumbing fixtures and now I don't have to worry about the "water" that we would sometimes see. In fact, I can't count the number of times my sister and I had different plumbers come, reset the toilet, and actually had to have the sewer system redone and no one ever bothered to tell us that the drain pipe under the toilet was lead. Alex called me in when he was showing me the damaged floor and showed me the lead pipe. He explained in detail the handling of it, how that was causing the leaks around the toilet and was amazed that nobody who had serviced that toilet had never replaced it with pvc pipe. I didn't know how "soft" lead is. Thank God, everything is up to code and sound. Currently, Alex is re-doing my bathroom. As I stated in the "services performed," Alex discovered black mold there. He has that under control and I couldn't believe that the exterior walls had to be taken down. But they're already replaced, new insulation, and he is hard at work at this moment. Because he moved a wall 11 inches, he has talked to me about what the new bathroom will look like. Again, I will have to see it to believe it! Instead of a small corner shower, I will have a large walk-in shower with a bench! He is moving things around to accommodate this and the old odd shaped vanity is gone and I will get to choose a new one. When the bathroom is complete, I will report on it, but know that it will be as promised and no doubt will exceed my expectations.I can't emphasize enough how much I trust Scott Smith and his employees who have done the remodeling of my home. I especially want to thank Scott and Alex for their patience with me, their kindness, and as I've said elsewhere, Alex has taught me so much about remodeling and one thing he said really stands out about houses that were built when mine was and that is that the contractors didn't have the products or tools then that we now have. Makes perfect sense. One final note, but extremely important to me, when the black mold was discovered, Scott is doing that "at cost" because there was no way of knowing that it was there. That kind of service can't be beat in my book. Because work is still in progress and Angie's List doesn't allow future dates for completion of work, I used 6/20/12.
Description of Work: The first project was to transform an enclosed porch into a sun room. The original floor probably started out as a patio, then was enclosed. The "carpet" was green outdoor carpeting that looked like turf. My main concern was that the floor was not level. That is where my search started on Angie's List. That was "service contract #1.In talking to Scott Smith about other projects I had in mind, contract #1 led to contract #6 which is currently in progress.Contract #2 was to install a new front door. Nothing in my house is "standard size." I had previous bids over the past few years for installing a new door with a side light. The first bid was approximately $5000. and I was told that because of the brick exterior and non-standard size, it would require "major" work. Others who looked at the door told me similar stories and about the same price. I decided not to have the door replaced. To my absolute amazement, when I mentioned the front door to Scott, he measured the door, studied the structure, and said, "No problem. The door will have to be custom made and I'll bring you pictures of doors and you pick the style you want. It will cost $1900.00." The door that I selected is a beautiful, modern, half-light door with matching side-light. The Glass top has a design that reminds of dogwood flowers. Also had my shutters replaced because they were in sad shape. In addition, I knew I had to replace old carpet and that turned in to Contract #3. My conversation with Scott then turned to other projects that I had on my wish list. I admit I probably did everything backwards, but I was so pleased with my new sun room, door, and carpet, I talked to Scott about updating my two bathrooms. Thus, contract #3. At first, I had told Scott that I could live with the current floor and he probably was pulling his hair out when I saw the beautiful tile work that Alex Marshall had done, I decided to have the floor tiled! That was contract #4.After Alex studied the small bathroom off of my bedroom, he told he had many ideas for enlarging it. Contract #5 was born. Even though I already had the "bathroom contract," instead of rewriting that contract, Scott wrote up a new contract for that bathroom. My laundry room is adjacent to my bathroom and Alex suggested moving the wall 11" thus adding more room to the small bathroom. That project is in progress now. I thought that contract #5 was the end, but one morning when Alex started to remove the small corner shower and tile, I heard him say, "Oh no." He showed me that my bathroom had black mold! It was awful to see. The insulation and the walls were covered. So, Contract #6 was born for mold remediation and also because the bathroom has two exterior walls, they had to be torn down. And yes, one of those walls is a part of the "sun room." I was heartsick, but was assured that it would all work out to my satisfaction.

It went great. The job was started on time, completed sooner than the expected completion date, and finished at the price agreed to. The work area was kept clean and organized thru out the project. The attention to detail is superb. Craftsmanship excellent. We could not be happier with the results. I would like to thank Scott Smith, and Billy and Charlie Woolsey for everything. We have future plans for adding a bathroom downstairs , and some kitchen remodeling and we are definatley going to hiring Smithco for those projects.

I had made the decision to have my deck rebuilt and called Smithco in March to get a bid. Scott Smith came out within a few days and we discussed what I wanted. This deck is approximately 25 feet off of the ground and I knew it would likely be a big job. I explained to Scott what I wanted and told him that I wanted to make the new deck about twice as big. I also wanted to replace the landings to the other two lower decks and have them build a new, wider staircase. Scott had some good ideas and we sat down to hammer out the details. Within a few days, he provided me with a bid and a time frame for completion, which I thought were both very reasonable. We signed a contract and very shortly after that, Scott called and told me that they would be able to start sooner than we had thought. They began work on April 3rd and by April 16th, they were done. It was a pretty big job, and they obtained all of the permits and inspections that were needed. They did an excellent job overall. When they were finished, I had a couple of minor things that I wanted them to add. They came back out right away and made my changes. The deck looks great and is a thousand times safer and more solidly built than the old one. They were done within the time they said they would be and the price I paid was the amount of the original bid. I've been very pleased with my experience and would certainly recommend Smithco to anyone who was looking for someone to build a deck.

Call Smithco, we had 8 different people come out and give us bids. Smithco wasn't the cheapest, but we felt it was a great value for the money spent. Several people have come by our home and told us how nice it looks, I always tell them we are a work in progress, but we are coming along nicely. Hopefully Lyle and his dad will be finished by the end of the week. They are doing great work.
Description of Work: The work on our home is not quite complete yet, but they are doing an excellent job. It is taking a while, but the workmanship is wonderful. I tell them frequently what a great job they are doing. I had someone stop last night and ask me about our siding. I told them to call Smithco. They were upfront and honest with us about everything and I would definitely work with them again. Be sure to ask for Lyle and his dad to do the work. They are wonderful, we also had some windows and doors replaced and Mike did an excellent job on those as well.

The over all job was very good because the sub contractor who did the job, Dennis Grady did everything Scott wouldn't, that is why his price was so good.
Description of Work: I had a decking enclosed to a sunroom. I am a senior citizen and Scott took advantage of the fact and use pressure in getting me to sign saying that I only had right now to get the good price and he wouldn't give me a chance to call over a friend or the deal was off. The contractor that subbed the job was very good but Scott delayed the start by not getting the permits and saying it wasn't his place and didn't sign off on getting the windows saying it was the manufactures fault but was really his fault. In front of a friend said it would be a turn key job. But his meaning was what Scott wanted to put in. He left out the insulation, door knobs, paint and a lot of same things. A turn key means the same today as it did 20, 30 or 40 years ago. Scott said turn key had changed. He got 1/3 of the price when I signed and wanted another third when the job started. That means he was to receive 2'3's before a nail was nailed. I refused pay until at least a week of work was done. He is a very smooth con artist. Don't use him.

Response from SmithCo Exteriors LLC
The contract SmithCo performed for the member was a quality job done at a fair price. I am concerned about her claims and grades as they do not accurately reflect SmithCo’s performance for her and does not come close to reflecting 30 years of service in the SW Missouri area or for our many clients, from all age groups, many of whom are referrals and repeat customers. I can only ask reviewers to compare what she has said to the other reviews. We believe a lot of the miscommunication with the member was generated by the foreman we hired in good faith. Unfortunately he did not represent our values and standards of conduct and is no longer with us. The member expressed concern about payment and as she stated did not pay the second down until a week after work had begun though the method of payment was clearly stated in the contract and is common practice. At completion and on final payment she also had a check already written out for $500.00 less then what was owed, but to which I agreed for any mistakes SmithCo may have made, but for which we are always willing to amicably resolve. SmithCo Exteriors is a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau having an A+ rating, the Home Builders Association, the Chambers of Commerce in Springfield, Nixa, Ozark, Republic, and the North Springfield Betterment Association. SmithCo has also won numerous awards including the Alside Award of Excellence, the Beautification Award given by the North Springfield Betterment Association and the Goldstar Exterior Designer Award. Anyone interested in our services can be confident they will be well served with quality products, workmanship and competitive prices.

Scott Smith was kind enough to come to the house in the evening to look over our ideas for the door addition job, because it is difficult for us to get away during the business day to meet service people to look over jobs at the house. He took measurements and asked questions and we settled on a price and start date. Next, we met with the foreman for job, Mike McDaniel, and discussed details such as exact location for the door, how it would open, replacing the siding around the new opening, etc. The new door was installed beautifully and the cement was poured shortly thereafter. However, before my husband and I even had a chance to really look over the cement work, both Mike and Scott came by to check on it were dissatisfied with the result. Without charging us a penny, SmithCo had the cement sidewalk and landing jackhammered out and then repoured, and we even had them add a little extra corner to the original plan for the sidewalk. The resultant cement work is not only beautiful but solid and very functional. And, although every now and then we regret undertaking these smallish projects that aren't really NECESSARY but which will make our lives easier, we are THRILLED with the results of this project and are 100% happy we did it in no small part due to the excellent price and service provided by the people at SmithCo.
Description of Work: Water was not draining properly off our relatively new roof, so SmithCo repaired the channel in the roof so that water did not back up under the shingles. They also did a thorough inspection of the rest of the roof. SmithCo installed a door in the side of our garage so that we no longer needed to open and close the large, double-car door every time we wanted go out on foot or with a bicycle. As part of that project, we needed a sizeable cement sidewalk and landing connecting the paved driveway with the new side door.

Although we love the quirkiness of our older home, when we first moved in, we could immediately feel the air coming in around the old front door and windows, and as a result of settling, it was difficult if not impossible to open and close many of the windows. Scott Smith, the owner of SmithCo, helped us select double low-e windows that fit nicely with the original character of the house yet gave us the low maintenance and high energy-efficiency we were looking for. He helped us pick out a new front door that, too, maintained the integrity of the arts-and-crafts style of the house yet kept the summer heat and winter cold out but didn't break the bank. The men working for SmithCo really worked hard and with an eye for detail. They had to do a lot of fine-tuning to correct mistakes from previous renovations as well as repair age-old wear and tear as they insulated the walls and then installed the new siding. They treated the house as if it were their own, and we never had the impression that they were skimping on materials or time. Rather than covering up or glossing over trouble spots, they took the time to fix them right and did not bother asking us each time if we wanted a hole filled or leak repaired. They just did it. Now, the house is much more solid and weather-proof than it has probably ever been. The outside of the house looks new and sleek yet it still has its classic bungalo lines. By the end of the project, there were no "add ons" to the price for these little things that had to be taken care of along the way. We were charged exactly what was stated in our contract, and we truly believe we got our money's worth on a job really, really well done.
Description of Work: We had several jobs completed at the same time on an old, 100+ year old house: (1) replaced the old front door with a new front door and sidelights; (2) had columns and the roof of the front porch removed and replaced with new materials; (3) had a light installed over the front steps; (4) replaced 20 windows (living room, bedrooms, and bathroom); (5) had a window removed and the opening insulated and sealed on the inside and sided on the outside; and (6) removed old siding and had new siding and Tyvek house wrap installed on three walls of the two-story house. I mention the age of the house, because although the house has "character," it was no easy task to level, repair, insulate, and fit new, energy-efficient windows and doors into openings that were not necessarily straight or plumb. Despite the challenge, Mike McDaniel, the foreman on the job, was adept at figuring out how to solve problems. As the old siding came off and we saw the poor condition of the outer walls underneath, Mike and his team made all necessary repairs and wrapped the house before putting on the new siding. The job lasted about a month, and at the end of each day, materials were set aside, out of the way, and the work areas cleaned up. When the job was done, all trash was picked up around the house and in the yard -- including nails, bits of paper, construction material wrappers -- and hauled away. While the work was going on with the house, we noticed a piece of old siding had fallen off the garage some time over the past year, long before this particular renovation project began. When we asked Mike if we could pay him to repair that piece of siding (siding the garage was not part of the contracted job), he told us one of his crew had seen the siding on the ground, put up a ladder, and repaired it just as a matter of course. We were utterly impressed, since it is not often that people go out of their way to fix something without being asked or without asking for remuneration.

All work was done in a timely manner and at the estimated price. No surprises. Scott and all of the workers were friendly and didn't mind answering any questions we had.
Description of Work: This is the second time we have used SmithCo. Several years ago we wanted to add a deck to our home. The owner Scott came out and helped us design a beautiful and unique deck. The man who built the deck was very friendly and professional and cleaned up all mess everyday. The deck complements our home perfectly. That project went so well that we wanted to use SmithCo again when enclosing our breezeway. Again Mr. Smith came out, listened to us as to what we were wanting to do and got the job done for us. We couldn't be happier with our new 'sunroom'! P.S. Angie's List has the wrong address and phone. SmithCo is in Springfield on Walnut Street
