The representative arrived at my home on time. His appearance, however, was off-putting. He looked like he just came from an install - dressed in dirty work clothes with no notebook or laptop or any other materials. He spent about 5 minutes with me and needed only to know how many registers and cold-air returns there were and how many square feet. He then excused himself to go to the company van and write an estimate. The estimate was 40% higher than the estimates from three well-known competitors. I was stunned. The three competitors representatives looked in my crawl space (for any issues there might be related to the furnace and air conditioning), the attic (checking insulation values and the condition of my cold-air returns) and one of them even measured the entire outside dimensions of my home and calculated how many square feet of window face east (generating heat from the morning sun), west (generating heat from the setting sun) and south. That made sense as it helped him calculate the cooling needs of the home. ATS, of the other hand, did not look in the crawl space nor the attic and didn't even care to know how many windows there were in the house (28, to be exact - a lot!). I asked if he needed to know and he said "No." Needless to say, I would not recommend ATS Heating and Cooling although a real estate agent friend had recommended them to me indicating they had done excellent work for the agent and were very reasonable in terms of what they charged for their equipment and services. The ATS representative was polite and put booties on to protect my carpeting but, as far as determining exactly what my home's heating and cooling needs were, his assessment would have been comical had been so important to me and such an expensive proposition (over $13,000).
Description of Work: Provided an estimate for replacing my home's furnace and air conditioner.

Response from ATS Heating & Cooling
We will admit that our tech failed in a few areas but there are some things that need better explaining. One I have reviewed his estimate that was turned into the office. The customer was given two different options. First option was a High Efficient Bryant HVAC System for $6,900.00 with $1,600.00 worth of rebates bringing the price down to $5,300.00. The Next option was for a High Efficient York system for $7,800.00 with $1,400.00 worth of rebates bringing the price down to $6,400.00. We always give at least two options. I would appreciate some honesty to these reports. The only way to get to $13,000.00 is to add both estimates together. Second we do not employ high pressure commission only salesman and as long as I own this company we never will. There is too much of a chance for them to get greedy. I Hire well trained technicians So most likely the Tech was on either a service call or an install before going to this home. He may very well have been a little dirty. That is one of the reasons we require them to wear the booties into our clients homes. ATS works very hard to put competent people in the field. We back ground check and drug test. We work hard to be a positive influence in the Ozarks and strive to provide full time quality job positions to the area. All I would ask is that if we are reviewed that all the info is given. Now to the part where our tech failed. It looks like he relied on his experience to size the system. Which I would bet was the same size as the other companies bid. But he should have been more thorough when sizing it. We do not put on a sales presentation show when we bid a system. Once we get a go ahead from a home owner we do a manual J Load calculation on the home. This allows us to keep our costs down. The manual J process takes some time and costs Labor to do. So we only do it on systems we have sold. I wish this tech would have spent some more time on this. I have had a talk with him about it, and he has agreed to be more complete on how he sizes systems. But to this Techs credit he has sold three systems in the last two days. It does seem odd that this customer would not ever recommend us when he has only met one of our representatives and has never experienced any of our services other than this estimate. I do apologize for his appearance, his short response and lack of a full inspection for sizing. But I will say that this particular tech is brilliant in service and installations. Thanks Donny Brown President

I?ve lived in my house 5 years and at the end of the 2011 summer my AC unit went out up until that point it cooled my 1350sq ft house without any problems. Knowing that the unit was 22 years old I expected at some point I would have to replace it sooner than later. I called ATS Heating and Air June 2012 to come give me an estimate. Donald Brown the owner of ATS Heating and Air came out and gave me a very reasonable estimate so I agreed to have them do the work. So a week later (July 6, 2012) he sent 2 guys out one turning out to be very unprofessional and another guy who told me he had been on the job less than 2 months. The new guy installed the condenser outside while Rick who was very very impersonable and rude installed the furnace. After about 7 hours they finished and left, that was a Friday and I had scheduled another company to come clean my vents/ductwork the next week. The whole entire week my AC didn?t shut off and remained at 78 -79 degrees. Friday my ducts were cleaned and I asked the guys from the other company about the cooling issue they said you need a bigger air return you have a 12in and you should have a 16in for this type of unit. In addition while they were under the house they informed me that my condensate line was running water/condensation under my house and that could cause issues under my house possibly mold issues. Monday I called ATS Heating and Air and they sent Rick out that afternoon I asked him about the air return and he shines his flashlight up to the vent and goes ?that is a 16in return man?. I then ask him about the condensate line and he says to me ?I never check that it is not up to me I assume the homeowner knows where its going.? I then ask him ?since you put in a complete BRAND NEW system wouldn?t you check that as well?? Rick replies simply ?NO?. I move past the inconsiderate attitude and lack of professionalism and ask him about the AC cooling my house he then stammers and stumbles around making excuses about record temps outside and finally after 5 minutes of this I ask him what the resolution is and his reply was ?I don?t know I will have to send the Boss out here?. A few days later Mr. Brown the owner of ATS Heating and Air comes out checks all the settings on the condenser and furnace and looks at the air return and says ? yep you need a bigger one it should be a 16in return for this sized condenser.? I say ?funny since your guy who installed everything said it was already a 16in return.? So he schedules 2 guys to come out and install a bigger air return vent (I specifically told his office I do not want Rick back at my house). So a week later 2 guys show up and install a bigger return and said after 24 hours your house will be cool and your unit will finally shut off (my AC had been running 2 weeks straight at this point never shutting off once). Well I waited a couple days just to give them the benefit of the doubt still no change I then called ATS again and they said they will send Donald back out. So a few days later he returns and checks temp coming out of vents and says that is to cold he then removes cover from my furnace and becomes very upset at the fact that his guys left the AC on while they were installing the new air return so all the insulation and dust was sucked into the BRAND NEW UNIT! Here is a picture I took of the 2 1/2 week old air filters he took out: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g195/bcoulston/photo-2.jpg . Donald replaced the filters and said "well that should finally fix it I?m sure of it, call us in a few days and let us know." Well a few days went by and still no change so I called to schedule him to come back out. A few days later Donald comes out and checks everything again and says ?I?ve been doing this over 20 years and it baffles me it?s still not cooling and shutting off like it should. ? He then takes his temperature gun and checks various points in the ceiling and floor and says ?well you need more insulation in your attic I?m sure of it. I know that will fix it, I?m so sure of it that if it doesn?t I will pay for your attic insulation and install a bigger AC condenser for FREE?. I told him I found this whole ordeal very odd since a 20+ year old AC was outperforming a brand new unit. I NEVER HAD ISSUES THE PAST 5 YEARS WITH MY AC COOLONG MY HOUSE DOWN ENOUGH SO THE UNIT WOULD SHUT OFF. I asked him if his company would install the insulation and how much would it cost he said he would check on it ASAP. I then asked him a timeframe since my AC had been running 3weeks straight at this point and I just knew my electric bill would be insane. He replied ?I will get on the phone as soon as I get in my truck and let you know right away?. That was a Friday I didn?t hear back by Tuesday so I called 2 insulation companies myself to get quotes one was $950 and one was $600, I schedule the one for $600 and they said it would be a week before they could do it I said ok. Out of nowhere that Friday I get a call from ATS saying they could come install insulation I said I already took care of it and the office manager said ?oh well let me have Donnie call you back?. A few minutes later Donald calls me and I tell him everything and he says ?wow that?s a good price we couldn?t get the materials and equipment and pay my guys for that price so I would go with them?. He then said ?but what I will do is have my guys put a cover over your attic fan in the attic to make things more efficient. I was happy about this except for the fact it was just one more day I had to take off work to be home so they could try to remedy this awful mess they created. A few days later the insulation is installed and I notice a slight drop in temperature after a few days but still my AC would not cool down enough to shut off and at this point it had been running NON STOP for a MONTH! I call ATS AGAIN and Donald comes out again and checks insulation to make sure its done and says well we will put in a bigger AC condenser at no charge like we talked about. So they installed a bigger unit and after a few days I could tell a big difference. I call ATS and asked them about the second part of our understanding that Donald volunteered on his own to pay the $600 insulation, they said please write a letter to our office explaining everything and enclose the receipt. So I said ok and spent even more of my own time writing a letter requesting to remedy misreading?s and mistakes. A week and half later I get a check in the mail for $300 which was half of what it cost for the insulation. This was very upsetting considering it was Donald who actually suggested this deal and second he even said that $600 was a great deal and cheaper than his company could?ve even have done it. After this it was the last straw for me that is why I have spent another hour of my time writing this long complaint notice to the general public in hopes maybe I can save someone some money, headaches, comfort and a heck of a lot of time. ATS may have decent prices but their employees proved time and time again they either didn?t care or were very inexperienced or ignorant about their jobs. As for Mr. Brown I will say he seemed to care but after dragging it out as long as he did and for hiring the quality of people he sent to my house it didn?t matter much to me if he seemed to care or not after the hassle Ive experienced over the last month and half plus not to mention all the money lost on utilities and time off work (my electric portion for the 1 and half months on my utility bill was over $330). After all this I would never recommend ATS Heating and Air, especially since Mr. Brown did not honor his word about reimbursement for my insulation. So hopefully this can help someone in the future avoid a long hot expensive summer like mine has been!!

Response from ATS Heating & Cooling
This has been a very frustrating situation for all involved. It is out of character for Rick, he must have been having a bad day. We got a lot of compliments and clients asking for him while he worked here. And Josh had only worked for us for a few months at that time. When we go out to install a system it is required that they check the return and the drain so my Techs did let us all down in that regard. We have since corrected both those at no charge. On the not shutting off issue it was an odd circumstance. I have installed 2.5 ton a/c's hundreds of times in houses 1300 square feet. Yet it positively would not cool this house properly. And yes we did take some time to determine positively that it would require a larger a/c. When your ceiling is putting off 96 degree's that is usually the cause of an a/c not shutting off. When the insulation being added didn't correct it I was in disbelief at best. So I went personally and got a larger a/c and installed it myself. It took 45 minutes to change out to the larger condenser and in that time the temperature in that house went up 4 degree's, this is not normal. I did suggest that the home owner have an energy audit to determine where all his losses are occurring. I did tell the home owner if the insulation didn't correct it I would pay for it. We have went above and beyond in my opinion on this job. Because of the amount of money we have spent on this job I told our accounting department to pay the $600.00 in two payments over a few weeks. When they sent the first check they failed to put a note with it to tell the client that that is what we were doing. The other half will be coming very soon. And as far as the $200 for utilities I do not believe we should be responsible for that. The house has severe window and door issues. But I will send him it as well. We work hard to keep a good reputation. And will always do whats necessary to keep a client happy. I am extremely sorry that this situation happened and thought that we were working diligently during one of our busiest times of the year to resolve it. So to sum up: Our technician Rick failed to do what was required of him. He no longer works here. We did check and test on several occasions to make sure our next step would be the right one. Our office failed to tell the gentleman that the other half was soon to be sent. The $200 for CU will also be sent in a week. We understand that a home owner just wants the system to work as promised and that was the end outcome. This is the first case like this in 16 years of this company’s existence. Sizing an HVAC system is something we have always done well. So we hope he will be happy in the end with everything. Donald Brown President

Our A/C compressor went out could not be reasonably repaired. After discussing both repair and replacement options with ATS we decided to replace the entire HVAC system with high efficiency equipment. The company owner presented options with installation costs, future savings explanations, installation scheduling, etc., and let us make our own decision with no pressure. It was such a pleasure to receive a range of information without the manipulation that often accompanies an estimate. Everything was installed as scheduled by extremely professional and personable technicians. It was a pleasure to have them in our home. Their obvious respect for our home and well-being was evidenced by their cleanliness and attention to many small details that made the installation neat and convenient. We will recommend this company without hestiation to anyone. It is a pleasure to direct business to a company of high ethical, professional, and technical standards. This is definitely the kind of company that we want to help succeed in our community!

Fantastic! They did a wonderful job.
Description of Work: Called them out and our entire ac had to be replaced. They were very price competitive, friendly, courteous and I highly recommend them. The evening of the replacement it was 103 outside and we were worried it still wasn't working. It was after hours and the owner of the company was at our house within an hour. He made sure everything was working properly and it was. He went above and beyond with his customer service. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I called ATS first thing this morning at about 7:30. My HVAC system had quit working late on Sunday and it is original with the house (built in 1991). I had visions of whole new HVAC systems and the huge bills that accompanied it dancing in my head. I was told Rick would be there between 9 and 10 am. He was ontime and very responsive to my questions and made a thorough diagnosis. Turns out it was just a fan motor. A quick repair and a recharge of freon and my system is running better then it has in years. You can bet I will be using ATS for all of my HVAC needs in the future and I will tell everyone that I know! Thank You ATS and Thank You Rick.

Overall good. There was some difficulty getting the detailed quote I wanted, but the service was really good otherwise. They couldnt finish in one day, but the owner ok'd them to work over and then come back on Saturday so I wouldnt have to miss work anymore. I really appreciated that.

After my approval, they replaced the capacitor and added freon which brought the system up to good working order. I had previously purchased a programmable thermostat at a local store with the intention of installing it myself. Because of a system change since the original thermostat was installed, I was not able to determine the correct wiring match. The serviceman from ATS agreed to install it for me for a small charge ($40) which I was happy to pay to make sure it was installed correctly.
Description of Work: The problem was that the heat pump unit wouldn't shut off. They determined that the contact had gone bad. While they were here they cleaned the unit and checked the other major parts. During that time they found that the capacitor was weak and would not hold up much longer, and the freon was low.

The Technician had integrity to give our check back and not charge us three service calls. We have had repair men who did charge every time they came to the house. This company was fair and timely in their service. When he realized he could not fix our unit, he helped us find another refrigerator that does not need a lot of repairs.
Description of Work: Technician cleaned the coils and diagnosed a thermostat problem. He ordered the part and came back promptly. After installation our issues did not go away. He came back out and after further diagnosis he found it was the compressor. After three trips he only charged $69.00 and gave us our check back for the part.

The team was polite, informative and showed a genuine interest in our satisfaction as a customer. My only dissatisfaction with the company has nothing to do with the technicians. Roughly 2 or 3 weeks after their visit my wife suggested that an overall assessment of our heating and cooling systems would be helpful. She had heard of other companies that sent out technicians that do inspections and assessments at no charge. I thought that since we had such a pleasant experience with the ATS technicians, I felt I could trust their judgment on assessing our H-VAC system. When I called the company to ask for an assessment the office manager said they would have to charge an hourly rate as if they were coming to make a repair. My only suggestion is that ATS consider hiring a salaried estimator whose primary function is to inspect and offer suggestions for improving heating and cooling efficiency and expenses. Simply said, I was trying to invite an ATS representative into my home to sell me on ways that ATS could improve my H-VAC system. A no-cost, no-obligation, inspection and assessment could be the answer to increasing ATS's customer base, and certainly customer satisfaction.
Description of Work: ATS was the company dispatched by my home warranty provider. The work involved a two-visit repair. The first visit they determined that I needed a new condenser coil for my air-conditioning. They returned the next day and installed the condenser.

Thanks for the good remarks. We do work for several home warranty companies. As a rule do to contracts with these companies we do not send estimators as the warranty companies provide all new equipment. We have a full time estimator, we also offer maintenance agreements for keeping a system it its most efficient state. The only way we can dispatch an estimator to a home warranty call is if the customer specifically requests it. Thanks Donny

The service went very quickly once the technician was able to locate the problem which didn't take him long.
Description of Work: The technician added freon to my central air unit and when this didn't fix the problem, he started checking my furnace out and found a bad TSV and since my furnace was still under warranty the technician was able to get a new TSV and it didn't cost me anything, all I paid for was the freon and service call and my house is so cool and comfortable, but if my central air should quite working the technician located a compressor and is going to clean it up and have it on standby incase I need it. I feel this is really going out of your way.

The tech on this job was Daniel. He gets lots of compliments from our clients. He is a really good tech and has a real good personality. You can teach tech skills all day but it is nearly impossible to teach people skills. His ability to diagnose, explain the problem and fix the units is extraordinary. He exemplify's they type of people we try to hire. Thanks Donny

Called the company in the morning and the same day they were able to come out. It was an urgent need for them to come out the same day and they were able to do as requested. The technician arrived on time and was extremely professional and worked quickly. The price was extremely reasonable and he even fixed my garden hose (had a hole in it) for me.
Description of Work: Air conditioning was not working properly and was not cooling home as it should. Technician came out and performed a check on the air conditioner, explained the concern that was found (needed freon) and cleaned the coils on the outside unit and made sure I understood how to do this myself.

Our heater kept turning off and requiring manual restarting for several weeks. We would wake up to a freezing house. It finally wouldn't turn on at all today. We checked Angie's List and ATS was both the top rated and the first to call us back. Donald arrived just when the dispatcher said he would. Our furnace problem is a little elusive, which we knew because this isn't the first winter it's done this. However, after thoroughly inspecting the unit and testing out all the parts, Donald felt fairly certain that the problem was due to a dirty flame sensor which he cleaned. Everything was running smoothly when he was ready to go but he did assure is that their policy was that there was no charge to come back within 30 days if the problem was not fixed. He also gave us tips on our heater and what to look for if we ever upgrade. While he was down there, he said he "just couldn't help himself," and he fixed a leaky pipe on our water heater as well (how nice!). Because he didn't do any real repairs, we were only charged for a service call ($59) for which we used the Angie's List 10% off coupon. Great company! We'll use them again if ever necessary.
Description of Work: Donald inspected the entire unit and cleaned the flame sensor. When he left, it was up and running again.

Thank you for the great report. Most service calls are cut and dry repairs, but there are the occasional ones that just don't want to cooperate. In the case of a intermittent problem they can be somewhat elusive. And that is the main reason we instituted the 30 day cover for a service call. After 30 days we're pretty certain we found the correct problem. Thanks again Member Donald Brown President

I had to have them come out three times to fix a problem. They usually get the job done. When I first started using them years ago I always thought their price was great, but now it looks like it has gone up a bit higher. They do a good job versus a lot of the other companies. I like them and would recommend them.

Thanks for posting the report. I am concerned about the time it took them to get it done, we try to keep trucks stocked but sometimes run into things unforeseeable or out of the ordinary. I am glad you will continue to use us. Pricing is always at the top of our concerns, the balance of being to high and being to low is a tough one. If were to high we lose customers, if were to low we go out of business. ATS is guided by a higher power and we pray we never get greedy. We realize to keep good techs, good trucks, all the proper insurance, licenses, and stocked trucks you have to earn enough to keep it all flowing. That is our goal. Thanks again for the report. I called ATS and they were very professional on the phone and made an appointment right away, can't remember but it was the same week I called. When Daniel (the technician) came, he was prompt and did not seem to need alot of attention from me, which I appreciated. He got to the problem and told me how much it may cost. He seemed to intelligiently give me a diagnosis and I gave him permission to do the work. He promptly called the office to see if the part was available and gave me a date and time to come back and install the broken part, but told me it may not help. I was willing to take a chance (a new washer cost so much more). He replaced the pump motor and leaking front door. When to my dismay it did not fix the problem. So when I called back they were prompt and told me that that model had problems and if the replaced items didn't work they would recommend getting a new one rather than spend more money on it in repairs. I was also told that the company would buy the machine so they could use it to teach their technicians. Where do you get rid of a bad washer? So I was in. I have since replaced the washer and dryer and will be calling them regarding buying the old washer and dryer set. We will see what they will do. I was very pleased with the service and they even mailed me back a refund on my original $340! Since it did not work, they felt I should not have paid full price. Who does that? I will call them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: My Whirlpool Washer had been giving me trouble with error codes and just plain not working. Would not spin and would not take any size load at all.

Thank you for the report. Most service calls are cut and dry but on occasion we run into models that are riddled with problems such as yours. We work hard to make sure your money is well spent, and in your case the repair did not work out. So your money was returned, as is company policy. We appreciate your business and are pleased to hear you will use us again. Thank again Donald Brown President
