Response from M W Construction Services
I guess this guy thought if he waited long enough, I would forget about why I had a scheduling problem around this time period. My dad was in the hospital at Mercy and died! Had a funeral and my mom to take care of, and my business. Everyone else I was working with seemed to understand the situation I was in. All I can say is thank you to the other 99% of the Angie's List members that I have dealt with.

This is my first experience with this company, and from the start, they were very friendly and professional. Even though I contacted them when they were really busy, they made a point to remember my name and put me in thier contact list for a more personalized service.I had several jobs that needed to be done, and although it would have been difficult for them to get to e soon, he assured me that they would work me in. I told him that nothing was urgent except for a tile to carpet threshold which needed to be repaired before the carpet started fraying. He sent someone over immediately to fix that and then we scheduled to have the rest of the work done later. They arrived on time and got to work quickly. I was a little worried since I knew that they were going to be doing some work outside and it was raining that day. I worried for nothing because they brought plenty of tarps to work under and every time they came in from outside they took their shoes off. They were very tidy in every aspect and picked up after themselves as well. All the work was completed professionally, and if their was something that he didn't think he was qualified enough to tackle, he was very upfront about it (the only thing was a gas fireplace...all the rest he had the expertise to do). They were friendly, curteous, competent and affordable. It feels great having all these little jobs around the house completed and everything in working order. I would definitely refer him to anyone looking for a great handyman that isn't out to break your bank, and we will be using him for all our future needs as well.
Description of Work: Rerouted a dryer vent from dryer itself to the outside. Installed an electrical outlet outside. Fixed some siding on our house. Repaired a leaking faucet. Rewired a chandelier in our dining room. Installed a threshold between some carpeting and tile.

What can I say. Mike "shoe" is an excellent remodeler. I went through several contractors before settling on "shoe." He was punctual, and got the job on done on time with a VERY reasonable cost. Shoe has a good crew: Tim and Dave (for this job). All have done a wonderful job have their strengths. Tim is the drywall guy and Dave does a great job with metal framing and demo work. All of Shoe's crew are friendly and professional. Shoe is very detailed and catered to my needs. He listened to what I wanted and he executed and even provided some advice which I did not think about. He is currently remodeling my bathroom, and doing tiling on the sunroom. I would definitely use Shoe again for any work I need to get done. He is #1 in my book!
Description of Work: Sunroom was demo and remodeled. Large pieces of cedar wood were removed from the ceiling, brick was furred out and dry walled. Approximately 300 sq ft of space.

From our initial consult we were impressed with "Shoe's" professionalism and attention to detail. We really got a sense for his experience in laying tile and a determination for a finished product that we were happy with. After receiving about four quotes from different tile setters we decided to go with Shoe because of the aforementioned reasons. His bid was in the middle of the four quotes we received. We had been rehabbing a hundred year old house for going on two years at the point we brought Shoe in. We were trying to keep the projects in the house moving according to schedule despite the fact that the drywaller was taking 3 times as long as planned. Shoe kept to our schedule without complaining even though he had to work around several other workers present in the house and the fact that the house was completely unorganized and messy. He had a real eye for detail and meticulously planned out the tile following my tile pattern and in order to make the best use of the oddly shaped room and to avoid ending up with any slivers of tile along any wall. In his planning, he was also able to give us suggestions and advice on placing the transition that we needed to place in the doorway between the new tile in the bathroom and the existing wood floor in the hallway. He worked very efficiently, professionally, and cleaned up his work area each day so as to not add to the mess in the rest of the house. We were very happy with the end result and we look forward to having him back for additional tile work.
Description of Work: A thinset base was applied under a layer of cement board. Long porcelien tiles were then thinsetted into position and grouted and sealed in a small bathroom.

Love Shoe's Crew! Shoe and Nick showed up on time and completed the work in one day. Extremely reasonable. Completely trustworthy (important because my husband and I both work and aren't able to be home). They were awesome with my dog. The project came out great. Would recommend them to anyone and would definitely use them again.

Arrived right on time. I showed him what I needed (I had added and removed some of the items from my list). He started immediately. He was very efficient and very professional, but friendly. He never wasted time standing around or taking breaks. He knew exactly what he was doing and did everything very well. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY. I HAVE NEVER HAD A BETTER EXPERIENCE WITH ANY COMPANY I HAVE EVER USED. I HAVE LIVED IN THIS HOUSE FOR 35+ YEARS, SO YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE HAD TO EMPLOY ALL TYPES OF COMPANIES TO HAVE WORK DONE.
Description of Work: I had a long list of things that I had been accumulating for many months. lt includes installing 2 electrical outlets, reattaching ceiling fan and wired that had been hanging out for a long time. (LET ME ADD THAT I HAD SEVERAL REPAIR GUYS ESTIMATE IT WOULD COST $150+ depending on what they needed to do.) It took Nick all of 3 minutes to figure what needed to be done and fix it--and that included searching for the right size screws in my junk drawer. He repaired a lock on my bedroom door (skeleton key). He hung 5 new curtain rods which I had been asking my son to do for years (literally!!). He replaced circuit breakers. He installed 2 new electrical outlets in the living room--outside and inside walls. He answered and gave me suggestions for many other questions I had related to the work he might do for me. He told me when I asked him to do something that wouldn't work and the reason it would not work, etc.

I contacted "Shoe" to help repair some sections of vinyl siding that had come loose from the side of my house....he was not available but referred to another Angie's List company: Exterior Siding Solutions LLC - James Rusty Gregory. As it turned out, after some 6 calls to various companies also on Angie's List, Rusty was the only one that came to help me out - and within a couple hours, he arrived, assessed the situation, and made repairs all for a nominal fee. He saved me from losing huge amounts of siding off the side of my house. So thank you "Shoe" for directing me to a conscientious, skilled and very reasonable contractor.

Mike ("Shoe") was very friendly and upfront during our initial meeting to discuss our needs, options, and eventual plans for work. He was honest and upfront about our options. We initially were asking about replacing the entire entryway, including new doors and frames. That would also involved moving some electric running in our door frame. From his experience he recommended simply working with and adjusting our existing doors, which is much less expensive. We appreciated his honesty and keeping our needs and finances in mind, rather than getting us to sign up for a more expensive job. Nick actually performed the work. He was very courteous and clean, and managed to complete all the work within one day, which was the initial labor estimate. He was efficient in that he would always find something else to make progress on while something else was drying/setting. We are very pleased with the finished product.
Description of Work: Repaired/adjusted two door frames, repaired plaster damage high above a staircase from an old roof leak. Our house is over 100 years old, and our front and back doors do not make a good seal and are very inefficient. The front door frame also had some large holes from deterioration or prior repair attempts. Nick from MW re-positioned the locks and weather stripping, repaired the door frames, and now both are closing snugly. A roof leak (now repaired) left us with plaster damage above the stairs leading to our second floor. Nick removed and replaced the damaged plaster, which now looks like the rest of the wall.

Shoe came out as agreed to go over the home improvement project and seemed interested, however, never did hear back with a bid so I guess he wasn't interested. Don't ever blame anyone for not wanting to do something but did expect at least an acknowledement this was indeed the case. Just an fyi if you call for an estimate.

My apologies Member. When I came out you said you weren't in any hurry for the bid. I'm just a phone call away. Folks I'm not just a guy that drives around selling jobs. I work! I do fall behind on paperwork because my main focus is on quality! If anyone ever wants to hurry up a bid, just tell me you need it fast or call me and request it. I don't drive around looking at jobs as a hobby. Phone calls work both ways.

I bought 2 hours of handyman service through Angies List originally for a minor carpentry job I needed, but ended up using the service to get a bedroom painted that had been on my personal to do list for some time. All in all it took about 10 hours because the room needed several coats. I was very happy with the services.

First I want to say, "Wow!" Incredible craftsmanship and a handyman who takes great pride in his work. MIke (Shoe) Welch came to see the very next day after my phone call for an estimate. He was friendly and knowledgeable and his estimate was EXTREMELY reasonable. He took the time to listen to my wishes for what I wanted done and was happy to give me estimates for some items I hadn't mentioned previously. He even cautioned me as to "worse case scenarios" so I wouldn't be surprised if once they started, problems arose in areas that couldn't be foreseen until the work had begun. Well, there was not a single problem, and the actual charges were below the estimate. Here's what was done. Tiles behind the shower faucet had been removed upon installation of new shower plumbing by another plumber (next time I will call Shoe insteaed of this other guy). So tiles needed replacing, old towel bars and soapdishes needed removal followed by tile replacement and I needed a new toilet installed. I can hardly believe how beautiful it all looks. The tile re-sets are perfect, the toilet works like a dream, and I had Nick recaulk the whole bathroom (the last handyman used the wrong type of caulk). All this at a terrifically REASONABLE price. The work was completed by Nick, an extraordinarily competent assistant of Shoe's. Shoe dropped by and also stayed in touch by phone to make sure everything was on track. Nick's work was not only completed in a timely and efficient manner, but he took special care as if he were working on his own house. His clean-up after completion was sparklingly spotless! These two men have renewed my faith in hiring home repair people. Great gentlemen and fine human beings.

Very good experience. Without my asking, the contractor volunteered to pick up the vanity, granite top and hardware which I had separately ordered. Contractor and his employee were very courteous, conscientious, neat and easy to deal with. Contractor explained cutting and other work necessitated by the different placement of the vanity versus the pedestal sink in detail. Both the employee and the contractor repeatedly said to call them if there were any subsequent problems and they would come back. Extra hour rates (beyond those purchased through Angie's List) were very reasonable. Would definitely use again.
Description of Work: Removed pedestal sink, moved piping, removed portion of baseboard, and installed vanity with granite top and new hardware. Removed recessed toilet paper holder and patched wall. Patched ceiling and wall in garage that had been damaged by roof leak. Removed recessed light, installed bracing and box, and installed chandelier. Replaced a second ceiling light. Cleaned everything up.

We wanted to add a bathroom on our first floor in what was essentially a tiny pantry. Nick worked without complaint in the tiny space. We were also interested in doing a lot of the work ourselves but live in the city so we needed to make sure the plumbing work was up to code. The M W construction crew was super helpful in giving us advice on how to do some of the work ourselves which was much appreciated because of our small budget. They are a super friendly highly recommended crew and I will invite them back to work on other parts of our house in the near future.

I purchased two Angie's List Big Deals (totaling a full day's labor) in October, originally thinking we'd use M W Construction to replace some light fixtures in our store during a remodel. We didn't use them for that because Shoe didn't feel comfortable with the scope of the electrical work, since it looked like we'd have to get a permit and he couldn't legally do it. I emailed Shoe again this month to see if he could replace our old kitchen cabinet and counter top with new fixtures that I bought. He was very prompt in his response and agreed to start almost immediately. He and his employee installed new cabinets, a counter top and new faucet and reset our existing sink. They showed up mid-morning and had the job mostly done by the end of the day, then returned the next morning to affix the cabinet hardware. The sink leaked around the outer edge because of its age and wear and tear. They came back and put silicone on the under side of the sink. I emailed again and Shoe came back the next day and sealed the top of the sink with clear silicone, which did the trick. Overall, it was a good experience. Shoe is very interested in making the customer happy and doing a competent job. I'd use them again.

Great job! Allow this company enough time to accommodate your wishes. They are very busy-----probably because they're that good!
Description of Work: Mike "Shoe" had finished most of the repairs in my home, but still owned some time to me. I asked him to refresh the grout on the tile in my bathroom. For some reason the new grout stain was not adhering properly so he had to make another trip and purchase (with his own $) some different products. This job took a lot more time than he owed me and he even left the remaining products for me that he had paid for!! It's so great to find a company that really cares about their customers and takes pride in their work. Thanks, Shoe and Tim-----you should be proud-----you're a dying breed!

Called to set up date - afternoon promised. I was called that morning to say handyman was on his way, might take more time because of snowing and slow traffic. When he arrived, he started right to work on the jobs listed above. All work was preformed satisfactorily. On the leak, he said to keep checking to see if the problem occurred again, since there was no obvious source of leak - he did tighten all faucets, etc. and tested with water draining. There has not been any leakage visible yet. I was completely satisfied.

I purchased a few hours of work from this company as part of a deal here on Angie's List. I needed to replace a broken ceiling fan as well as some steps that were worn out and cracking on my front porch. Before purchasing, I sent Mike (who goes by "Shoe") an email with a long list of potential projects. I was surprised that not only was he responsive through email, he wasn't pushy at all concerning how much work they could accomplish. The response I received from my long list was a suggestion to buy a few hours as a trial and see how it went. I purchased the hours, and scheduled the appointment via email. I know it may not be for everyone, but I'm usually tied up during the day, so I really appreciated working with someone who had no problem communicating with email. It turns out that M W Construction has a small team. When the time of my appointment was confirmed I was told who to expect at that time. Right on time, Nick rang the doorbell. Nick was professional and courteous. I showed him what needed to be done and he went right to work. He worked cleanly and carefully. As Nick worked, we chatted a little and he made sure to let me know when he bumped into a few unexpected complications. It was clear that Nick was experienced. Nick put up our new light fixture, carefully adjusting its height and even polishing it so it looked just right. Next, he went outside to replace the steps on my front porch. Again, he worked efficiently. In very little time he had them replaced. What he was done with the stairs, he let me know what he saw when he looked around the supporting areas, assuring me that everything was fine. Lastly, he secured a few loose boards and helped me dispose of what had been replaced. I was really impressed with Nick, Who did a great job; getting the job done quickly yet always showing care in his work. He was professional, and it genuine pleasure to talk to. I absolutely plan to do work again with M W Construction. They were good to work with before the visit, while on site, and were reasonably priced.

Do to a sewer back up, I had to repair and remodel my basement. The first contractor was referred by the flood clean-up crew and they did a lousy job. (fired and poor review written...) I initially hired M&W Contractors thru an ad/special on Angie's List. Mike Welsh (aka "Shoe"), owner-operator, met me and did an initial assessment of the job - it would obviously be more of a job than the 4-hour special I bought on Angie's List. Shoe was very helpful in assisting me with initial decisions on what needed to be done to fix the problems and get the project finished. I supplied the materials and parts and he or his crew did the installation work. I also did some of the demolition and finishing work. He did a GREAT job re-doing the tile work in the basement shower including some additional trim work and edging that I wanted. It looks really nice - much too nice for a basement shower!! They installed the basement vanity and it looks great too. Additionally, his crew repaired drywall that Laclede Gas had to remove and fixed rough spots left by the previous contractor. All looks good. They did a good job of keeping things clean and getting the work done on a timely basis. Only small problem was some dust created by a malfunctioning shop-vac. When I notified him of the problem, he apologized profusely, offered to clean-up and adjusted my bill. He worked with my schedule and was very flexible waiting for me to do parts of the work that I wanted/could do myself. I would hire them again and again and again! THANKS!!

I purchased an Angie's List Big Deal for their handymen services in August 2012 and had some work done in November 2012. The deal was for 8 hours of work. Nick and Tim performed the work on 11/30/12, which only totaled 5.5 hours of work. The bathroom faucet that I needed replaced, was only partially replaced. They were unable to remove some pipe part under the sink, and stated that if they tried to remove it, it would likely cause damage. The deadbolt lock they replaced on the front door does not work correctly. I am not positive if this is due to the lock or the way it was installed. My previous lock that they removed and threw away worked much better. I will be having another handyman come to remove the lock they installed and install a new one. The other items they did - painting, installing a door handle, installing a bracket, and smoothing out drywall mud, look fine. The work done only totaled to 5.5 hours of work and was instructed that they would come back to do another 2.5 hours of work at the end of December. The work they were to do at the end of December was install a washer and dryer, install a lightpost in the yard, and assemble a bookshelf. This work was never completed. I contacted Mike (owner) via MW Construction Services?s email address on 12/2/12 to let him know I still had 2.5 hours left remaining of my big deal and that I wanted to use those around 12/22/12 (since my washer/dryer would be delivered around then). On 12/6/12, he responded via email to say to let him know which date and time would work for me and that an 8am slot or 2pm slot would work best for his crew. On 12/9/12, I sent him the exact date and time (12/21/12 at 8am), that I wanted them to come and asked them if they were available that date. I received no response. I left a voicemail on 12/13/12, asking him if they were available that time/date again. 2nd time - I received no response. I emailed him on 12/16/12 at his company?s email address, asking for a refund for my remaining 2.5 hours since he was unresponsive and I had to have my work done before Christmas. I had to hire another contractor and pay additional $ out of pocket to hire someone else. 3rd time ? I received no response. On 12/19/12, I emailed him via Angie?s List ?Email Provider? button again restating that I needed a refund. Note - In the 12/16/12 and 12/19/12 emails sent to MW Construction Services, it was clearly stated that a refund must be received by homeowner by 12/21/12, and that if a refund was not received by that date, the homeowner would be contacting Angie?s list, the Better Business Bureau, and pursuing further action if necessary. After contacting M W Construction Services 4 times, Mike finally responded on 12/19/12 stating he would send me a refund. On 12/21/12, still did not receive refund, but gave MW Construction Services a few extra days before filed complaint or review. Filed an ?F? rating on Angie?s list on 12/27/12 since still no refund received.
Description of Work: - Prime/paint small bathroom, bathroom ceiling, bathroom door, and bathroom door frame - Replace faucet in small bathroom - Install bracket on outside siding to attach loose wire - Install new deadbolt lock on front door - Install new door handle in small bathroom - Smooth out drywall mud on a 1ft. long portion of back bathroom ceiling

When Mike came to our house to set up the floor project, we asked him if it was possibel to do the shower and walls. He said that he could work it in if there was no big rush as he had other projects to work on. I told him that I would get the materials and they could install everything. Once I got the materials (Walkin shower, floor tiles, wall tiles) they started to work. They had a hard time getting the bathtub out. They had to use a power saw to cut the cast iron bathtub into quarters to remove it. There was at least one person there everyday, Monday - Friday. Sometimes two depending on what had to be done. Other than the $779 coupon that we started with, Mike and I never discussed payment unti after it was finished. He had got caught up in other projects so we sent messages back and forth on our phones and worked out the details for final payment. It was a good experience and I would use them again.
Description of Work: This started out as a bathroom floor to be replaced for $779. It ended up with us expanding the project to removing the bathtub and replacing it with a walk in shower, and they also put in additional tile around the top of the shower. They also redid the bathroom walls and painted the bathroom. They replaced the wall socket. The cost that I paid them was $2,479 which included the original $779 for the floor. The other cost was materials and I bought them so that we would get what we wanted in the bathroom. Their normal work hours were 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour lunch. This project took approximately 3 weeks which may seem a little long. They were always courtesy and cleaned up after themselves each day when they left. We were not in a great hurry so they were able to work in the additional work we wanted with the bathroom floor.

As always with "Shoe's Crew," it went great. Nick was professional, very easygoing and so pleasant. Cleaned up beautifully after the job. The tile is smooth and looks brand new. Caulking is smooth and even around the tub. I appreciate the fact that Nick noticed other spots that needed re-grouting because I never would have thought to look. However I am learning that that is typical of M W Construction Services - they go above and beyond. It is never fun to need repairs, but when the job is done by Shoe and his crew, you can count on it being done right. What a relief. Can finally use that shower again without worrying about leaks.
Description of Work: It was not an easy job. Caulking around tub had cracked and shrunk, and when I tried to remove it, I accidentally broke off some tiles. Behind the tiles I found crumbling drywall from where the water had leaked, probably for years. There was no way I could do this repair myself. Nick put in a new piece of drywall, cemented the ceramic tiles to it, then re-grouted them. He also noticed some holes in the grout in other spots that I hadn't seen and he re-grouted them as well. Then he re-caulked the entire tub, not easy because the joint was 1/2" wide.

They fixed flashing aound my chimney and fixed the plaster on my ceiling. They did an excellent job.
Description of Work: Someone came to my house and fixed the flashing around my chimney. They also replaced some shingles. The leak I had in my house stopped. Someone also came back and fixed the plastering on my ceiling. This was a beautiful job. Now, all I have to do is paint. Excellent job.

MW showed up on time and with all needed tools and equipment. They were efficient, did all of the work, and cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: MW remove existing exterior shutters and installed new vinyl shutters that I had purchased. They also modified an existing sliding door by routing a mounting sopt for a new finger pull.
