We had specific ideas on how we wanted the bathroom to look, with respect to fixtures, walls, ceiling fan, lights, shower doors. They gave us feedback on our ideas, gave us concrete suggestions about features we hadn't thought through, suggested stores that carried items we wanted, and gave us an estimate price-wise and time-wise. We had the work done while we were away over the summer. They used a key lockbox to get into the house. They covered the work area to minimize dust escaping to the rest of the house. They were wonderful about helping us achieve the look we wanted, unlike two other contractors who wanted to do things their way. Our new ceiling fan was too noisy, and they replaced it even though we'd already paid them in full by then. The drainage system leaked and they sent someone right away to fix it. We noticed a few other things which they were happy to come in and re-do for free. We would absolutely ask them to do our next home project.

I was very impressed with Spiegel Brothers from the beginning to the end. Their quote was not the lowest, nor was it the highest. Dan really seemed knowledgeable about what we wanted to do, and understood our ideas. From the date they started, guys were at our house every day, and accomplished a tremendous amount of work. Everything finished right on schedule, on budget, and looked amazing. I can't tell you how many complements we've gotten on the work. Communication was responsive throughout the project, and I always knew I could ask them questions and would get a response quickly. There's no doubt I will use them again for our next project.

Pool Deck Disaster - Spiegel Brothers found in Breach of Contract We had used the Spiegel Brothers previously for a Deck in March of 2013 (also reviewed on Angie's List). This review is for a project that included replacement of a concrete pool deck and construction of a shed. Since we had used them before we felt we had a good relationship. It wasn?t until we had a problem that things went very, very wrong. The Spiegel Brothers broke up and removed all the concrete around the pool, which has stainless steel walls. One of their workers took a jackhammer close to the skimmer and bent the skimmer. At the same time there appeared to be water draining from the pool. We immediately called out a pool guy same day, paid for it out of our own pocket, to try to find the leak. It was not the skimmer, but a conduit that had been moved that related to the pool light. No problem. Lifted up the conduit and the Spiegel Brothers were good to go ahead and continue work. Once the concrete deck was removed, they poured the foundation for the shed which was poured incorrectly. In addition, the foundation bowed because Dan Spiegel did not put enough bracing on the forms. Also during this part of the job, the workers cut the internet cable to our home and home business. The cable was visible and the workers cut it because it was in their way. When we asked them about it they said, ?well it had to go.? When the Spiegels finally got one of the concrete forms attached to the pool wall, we discovered a problem. We commented on the fact that we didn?t think the forms would look like they did and Mark Spiegel said he didn?t either which indicated to us that they had never even looked at the forms they were going to use for the job. The forms being used would not give us the edge on the deep end of the pool that Dan Spiegel said it would give us and on one side of the pool the wall was wavy. When Mark Spiegel was asked about the wavy wall, his response was that there would just be a wavy concrete deck. Of course this was not what we wanted so we began to research and work with the Spiegel?s to come up with a solution. Dan agreed that they would fix the shed foundation and while we worked on figuring out a solution for the pool walls and forms, they would continue with other parts of the job. So they had fill dirt delivered to do some grading. We didn?t think the dirt they had enough dirt delivered to do the job and told their worker multiple times, even asking him to request more fill dirt. His response was he didn?t think they would do it because the Spiegel Brother?s truck had broken down and they had to pay $200 to deliver the dirt that was there. At this point we had already paid for sod to be delivered and needed the grading done no later than the next day. When my husband called Dan Spiegel about this, he quoted an additional cost and said he couldn?t guarantee that he could get workers out to do the work. We decided instead of taking the chance we would take care of that part of the job ourselves. From this point forward Dan Spiegel would not return any calls. Repeated calls to Mike the sales guy ended with him saying the workers were hunting or they were doing some other job. After a month of no workers coming to the job site, with winter closing in and no way to secure the pool we ended up contacting a lawyer. The Spiegel?s response was to have their lawyer send us a letter demanding additional money to complete the job. At that point, it sounded eerily like the guy who had left a negative review about his deck here on Angie?s List. At this point it was November and no other companies could do the job until the spring. This left us in a dangerous situation with an unsecured pool in a neighborhood full of kids. With no concrete pool deck, the safety cover could not be installed and the new fence could not be installed since it was to go into the concrete pool deck. Because we were at an impasse, the only way to clear the situation so we could get another contractor to complete the job in the spring was to file suit against the Spiegel Brothers. In October of 2014 the Spiegel Brothers were found in Breach of Contract and a judgment was handed down by a judge in the circuit court. The judgement can be found on Missouris' casenet site It has been a year since the judgment and the Spiegel Brothers have yet to pay what the court has ordered them to pay. Beware!
Description of Work: The Spiegel Brothers were contracted to remove a concrete and wood pool deck and replace with an all concrete pool deck and build a shed.

Deck is nice, but the job was never finished We contracted with the Spiegel Brothers in March of 2013 to remove our old deck and patio and put in a new deck and patio. Our initial discussions were with Mike the sales person. After reviewing Angie?s list we noticed they had a negative review and we asked Mike about it. His explanation was that the guy didn?t want to pay them to finish his deck. Despite this, they had an Angie?s List Super Service award so we figured we would go ahead since other reviews were positive. Dan and his crew did the work and offered up ideas about the deck. The job went okay with only a few times where workers were not on site. We had one incident at the final inspection where the inspector did not come out. In speaking to Mike about it, he made a sarcastic comment about this not being their first rodeo. Afterward Dan Spiegel called and told us he had called in the wrong job permit number for inspection. We agreed to wait on completion of two parts of this job. The first was laying asphalt around a new deck pier that was placed in the driveway. The second was repairing the damage to the driveway caused by the Spiegel Brothers? equipment. We didn?t feel like it made sense for them to repair the driveway when it would most likely get torn up again with the next project we were going to have them do for us, which was a replacement of a pool deck and pouring of a shed foundation. They never completed these two items ? see our review on the pool deck disaster for the reason why they never finished.

WE WOULD TRUST THESE MEN TO DO ANY WORK ON OUR HOME. OUR DECK WAS IN BAD SHAPE, WITH MOLD AND ROTTING BOARDS. MIKE THOMPSON, THEIR SALES REPRESENTATIVE, MADE EVERYTHING CLEAR TO US AS TO THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIALS, HOW THE WORK WOULD BE DONE AND EVEN PROCURRED A PERMIT FOR THE JOB. MOST COMPANIES AVOID GETTING PERMITS, BUT SPIEGEL STRONGLY ENCOURAGES IT. THEY SHOWED UP ON TIME, ONLY TOOK 1/2 HOUR LUNCH BREAKS, NO GOOFING OFF. THE QUALITY OF THE WORK WAS FANTASTIC. WE WANTED A DECK THAT WAS GOING TO BE MAINTENANCE FREE AND THEY DELIVERED FAR AND ABOVE. THEY MEASURED MANY TIMES BEFORE INSTALLING EACH PIECE, PAYING ATTENTION TO EVERYT LITTLE DETAIL.. THE RESULT WAS A QUALITY DECK THAT SURPASSED ALL OUR EXPECTATIONS. THE DECK SUPPORTS WERE PLACED ON POURED CONCRETE ABOVE GROUND AND ANCHORED ON, NOT JUST A HOLE DUG IN THE GROUND AND THE POLE PLACED IN AND CONCRETE POURED INTO IT. NO SHODDY MITER CUTS. EVERYTHING WAS PRECISION CUT. THEY ALSO DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON OUR SHED. IT WAS PRESSED FIBERBOARD AND WE WANTED IT MAINTENANCE FREE ALSO. THE SIDING WAS INSTALLED JUST AS WELL AS THE DECK. WHAT IMPRESSED ME THE MOST WAS THE FACT THAT AFTER EACH DAY OF WORK, THE WORK SITE WAS CLEANED UP TO THE POINT WHERE IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE NOTHING WAS GOING ON. NO LEFTOVER PIECES OF WOOD, SCREWS OR EVEN SHAVINGS. THEY EVEN PUT THEIR TOOLS UNDER THE DECK SO THEY WERE NOT BLOCKING ANYTHING. NO TOOLS ALL OVER THE PLACE. THEY ARE A SMALL COMPANY WHERE QUALITY WORK IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE AND WE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM. THEY SPECIALIZE IN DECKS BUT DO EVERYTHING ELSE EXCEPT ROOFS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THEM AGAIN AS WE WILL BE TILING OUR FIREPLACE IN THE SPRING. BECAUSE OF THE COLD WEATHER, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO STAIN THE SUPPORT POSTS BUT WE WERE GIVEN THE COLOR WE NEEDED TO GET IT STAINED WHEN THE WEATHER GETS NICER.

They did an excellent job. Spiegel Brothers have done a number of jobs for me. Their work is excellent and Dan Spiegel is a lovely guy. However, however.... He does make appointments and not keep them, with no notice, and he does disappear for weeks, even months at a time, again with no notice. When they're very busy, he just seems to sink out of sight This is distressing. He was supposed to come to my house yesterday at 9:00AM. He did not show, he did not answer his telephone, and he did not respond to an email. So I like him, and I like their work, but they're just not all that reliable. I must say, in all honesty, that this was a small job, not an emergency, and he may well be busy on large jobs. But it isn't that difficult to telephone and say you cannot make an appointment rather than leaving a client waiting for someone who never shows up.

I contacted Spiegel Brothers for 4 different jobs we were wanting done. Talked to Mike, the first appointment set up, no one showed. Mike called back a couple days later, we set up a second time and date. Received a call 3 hours before appointment time and Mike stated they could not make this appointment, set up yet a third time and date. Mike called 20 minutes before this appointment to state he would be a little late. So, 15 minutes after the time set, Mike arrived. After looking at all the jobs we were wanting done, he stated we would receive an email with the bids in a few days. As of today, it has been 10 days and NO bids !! Needless to say, we will not be using SPIEGEL BROTHERS for our work regardless of the price. This gives us an idea of their work ethic and the possibility of quality of work.

Overall everything went smooth from start to finish. A guy came over to look at the work we wanted done and within a few days we can a quote emailed to us. Once we decided they were who we were going to go with for sure we made a deposit, signed a contract, and they let us know the planned start date. From the day the started it only took them about 3 and a half days to finish everything. They take care of getting the permit form the city so all you have to do is......well.....nothing really besides pay them :)
Description of Work: We called Speigel Brothers because we wanted to get our current deck knocked down and a totally new deck built. They were the most reasonable price and they were very friendly people who were professional and quick to respond to my emails or phone calls. Our deck looks great, they totally cleaned up the work area and we really enjoyed working with them.

I received a letter from the Spiegel Brother’s lawyer. I have already paid them for half of the work. They are claiming they finished the deck flooring. I emailed them and told them I was willing to listen to any reasonable offer to come to a conclusion. The lawyer emailed me back and told me they wanted another $1300 to finish the job. I don’t want them to finish the job. They are taking short cuts and not doing it correctly. Matt from A&M confirmed with me that they were not following the guidelines and taking short cuts. I went with Gossen because their specs, according to the architectural institute, are of a higher grade than any other manufacturer. I wanted to go with top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art materials. I’m sitting here with a deck that is not completed. It was supposed to be done by Nov 30, but they cited weather problems as the reason for not completing the work. They are just making up stuff because the weather was absolutely beautiful. I’m paying the money, but I am not getting the quality or satisfaction I was promised. In order to fix what Spiegel Brothers did, all of the boards have to be pulled out. If you make a mistake on your first step, then all of your other steps are going to be wrong. They were supposed to use a 16 inch center, according to Gossen. They used a 12 inch center instead. All of this points to voiding any sort of warranty from Gossen.
Description of Work: I emailed Spiegel Brothers last night. They were not installing the porch deck to meet the guidelines of the manufacturer’s product. The manufacturer is Gossen. They explicitly state that in order for the lifetime guarantee to withstand the guarantee will be void if there are any errors in the installation. One day, after they had been working for a total of 9 hours over the course of a couple of days, I asked them if they were sure they were constructing the deck to code. They kept assuring me they were. I asked if they were following the manufacturer guidelines. They, again, assured me they were. Later, I went under the deck and took pictures of the materials they were using. I had another company that I had gotten bids from, and they came by and showed me where they were not following installation guidelines according to Gossen Manufacturing or to Ansi. Ansi does quality control of the manufacturing companies. They set guidelines that take precedent over the manufacturer’s guidelines, so they are the ones you need to follow. I took a lot of pictures and even called Gossen. They are using a PVC deck board, which as far as I know, is state-of-the art in terms of being weather proof. They missed the mark in several areas. They weren’t allowing for enough gap in the space between the porch and the deck board. On the very first board they lay, they need to leave a ¼ inch for expansion. It was uneven, and there was not ¼ inch anywhere around the edge. Already, they have not followed the manufacturer’s guidelines, so the warranty would not withstand. I was very upset, and I fired them after 2/3 of the job was completed. They couldn’t answer my questions. I asked which guidelines they were following. Dan mumbled something about ICC. I asked him what that was and he couldn’t tell me. I’ve done a lot of research on this and they are not following guidelines. In the middle of the second day of working, they told me that all of the deck material they received had scratches on it. I asked how that could be. I could see if it happened to a couple, but to all of them? This stuff is supposed to be very scratch resistant. In order to scratch it, you have to take a knife or something very sharp to scratch it. It didn’t make sense to me that they received all of these damaged goods. They even ordered too much material that I needed for my deck. There were no scratches on the boards, just dust. I’m concerned they do this to all their customers where they over-order and tell people the boards are damaged and then re-use them for another job. I spoke with the company who sends out the boards, and they said they are very careful about what they send out. They told me it was not likely that they would send out an order with nothing but damaged deck boards. I spoke with one of the workers and confronted him with this information. He tried to push past me and get into my hosue. I told him he was fired, and he began begging me to reconsider. I called Matt at A&M Urban Renewal and asked him to come by. Matt was here for about an hour. He showed me where the gaps are not wide enough. I took pictures of the fasteners under the porch. They were using nails instead of screws. This does not meet the very specific guidelines that Gossen puts out or the guidelines of Ansi, who monitors Gossen. With their guidelines, you have to use very specific fasteners. Spiegel Brothers was taking short cuts.

Description of Work: After several failed attempts to procure a bid to recondition the columns on my front porch, I received a response from Spiegel Brothers . The contractor was courteous, professional, and helpful. Arrived to my house as scheduled, assessed the condition and amount of work necessary repair the columns, and gave me a fair estimate. Although unexpected financial problems prevented me from moving forward with the project, I would have certainly been glad to use this contractor. Will definitely keep them in mind for any future projects around the house. Thank you .

I put in a new cedar deck six years ago, when I moved into my house. I used cedar because I wanted it to last. But neither I nor the person who put in the deck knew that the wood had to be treated, and this past year, the boards have been rotting out at the edges where they met other boards. I spoke to several companies, and was given a sum I could in no way afford, to put in a new deck. Dan Spiegel, on the other hand, suggested just removing the rotted boards and replacing them, and then staining the deck. This cost far less. The workmen did this with skill and speed -- I suspect it's harder to do than to just replace everything. When the workman started staining everything, I realized that it would look odd if the steps, benches, a large planting box, and supports that held an arbor were untreated wood. I telephoned, and Terry, Dan's brother, said they would do it all, and they did! I found Dan and Terry extremely pleasant and easy to deal with, and will surely use them for other jobs that come up. I'm delighted with my new un-rotted deck!

The patio area is attractive and well done. The roof is metal and amazing. The job had issues of space and "fit" for a 1908 home. The end product is quite the "look". The roof is tall and not framed out so the cedar beams show. The metal covering was a great choice for the roof. The addition of a fan makes a great space even better. As the job progressed, adjustments were made to include new ideas and this was done in a seamless manner. A slanting, randomly spaced wooden wall was added to deflect the view of air conditioning units. Clean up was great. The Speigel brothers were very easy to work with. They demonstrated skills and creativity. The crew was on the job early and worked efficiently even with the excessive temperatures. The overall job was finished in a timely manner. The performance of all those involved was excellent. The finished job has created patio envy in the neighborhood.
Description of Work: The company constructed a poured patio with a roof on my Tower Grove Home. The patio area is aggragate concrete. The patio is covered with a metal roof and cedar lumber was used for the beams and support. A small landing with stairs was built at the kitchen door. An outdoor light, an outdoor fan and an outlet were installed. The existing deck and concrete walking area were removed.

We needed to replace a badly cracked and sunken driveway which we found out later was caused by a gutter draining along side the driveway. We received about ten different estimates from contractors and Spiegel Brothers gave me the most confidence in a good outcome, providing a written detailed estimate and payment plan as well as attention to our particular situation. Spielgel Brothers did an excellent job from start to finish on our concrete drive and walkway. The estimated price was right in line with the other "A" rated contractors on Angie's List. They were the only one's that also provided brouchers on decking, fences and stamped concrete that they install. The workers including both of the brothers showed up and started tearing out the driveway. There was a huge crater under the sunken driveway. They formed up the walkway and drive and put down a good layer of stabilized rock which wasn't under the original driveway. They installed a drain underneath the walkway for the gutter with a pop-up drain on the other side away from the driveway to correct the drainage problem. On the day of the pour five workers showed up including the two Spielgel brothers, a very smooth operation. They used an exposed aggregate finishing technique and put down two coats of sealer over the next two days. We have received a number of great compliments from the neighbors. I would highly recommend the Spiegel Brothers for any of your concrete work. They also installed a section of privacy fencing next to our patio. The work was done done as professionally as the driveway and at reasonable price. I like the fact that they will do the small jobs too.
