Southside Mower Repairs

The gentleman diagnosed the problem in less than a minute. He fixed the mover immediately and I picked it up two-and-a-half hours later. After years of taking my mower to a dealership for repairs and having to wait two-to-three weeks to get it back, I was surprised and delighted at the service I received. I'll never go anywhere else.

I read the reviews and took my older Lawn Mower (which was on it's last leg) to Southside Mower Repairs. They were great to work with. Said they could have my mower up and running in just a few hours. And cost was very reasonable.

I dropped it off in the morning, he worked on it, and said it would be ready after 2. And it was. This is a tiny old shop, and the proprietor must be near retirement. As long as he is doing this, we'll bring our business back to him. Great service for a great price. Sharpened the blade, new plugs, carb kit, etc. He replaced the pull string too because it was worn.

On the busy Friday before Memorial Day, after 18 months in storage, my 2002 Lawn-Boy would not start. I changed the sparkplug, cleaned the air filter and put in clean, new gas, but that did not work. I went to Lawn Care Equipment Company in Rock Hill, ten minutes from our home. They estimated $150 and two weeks to get my mower started. I went back home and found Southside on Angie's List. Frank said because the mower's 13-years-old he didn't know if he could fix it, but bring it in and give him three hours. As promised, three hours later it was fixed. Frank replaced a broken coil. Recently we have had a lot of work done as we remodeled and built an addition on our 60-year-old home. We were very disappointed with our general contractor and many subcontractors. We feel great to find Frank, an honest man who does what he says he's going to do. I enthusiastically recommend Southside for anyone in Saint Louis.

A very nice experience - my spouse and I took the mower in after work (nearly 6 p.m.) and he was still there. He took a look at the mower, listened to our complaint, then told us up-front what it would cost to repair the mower. It was done in 24 hours and when we went to pick it up the next day around 4 p.m. it was ready - it ran like a charm when I got it home! The fact the service was so fast was a huge deal since we really needed to get the grass cut between rainy days and didn't want to wait a week with grass up to our knees!

Did not go well. Mower still will not start when hot, after $80.00 bill. Called, and he said and quot;I don't know...let it cool off a while before you restart it.and quot; Said I could bring it back, and he would see if maybe it's the automatic choke. Of course, not starting when hot was why I took it there in the first place. Don't think I will take it back. 4/16/2014 Discovered that the problem was a common one with automatic chokes, and people who repair small engines should be familiar with it. There is a bimetallic spring which governs the position of the choke butterfly and the spring had failed. No excuse for that kind of and quot;repairand quot; service, in my opinion.

My 3 year-old lawnmower quit on me last fall. The self-propeller mechanism had stopped working and the engine was blowing smoke until it eventually would not start. This spring I called another shop to have the mower fixed but they had 2-3 week wait, which was too long given my grass was approaching code violation. With a recommendation from a family member and positive reviews on Angie's List, I called Southside Mowers. The gentlemen I spoke to on the phone was pleasant but a bit abrupt. He said to drop the mower off the next morning, which I did on my way to work. At dropoff, I discussed the problems with the mower and he said he would have it fixed by the end of the day, although he said he could probably not fix the self-propeller mechanism but he would take a look. Sure enough, the gentleman called in the afternoon and mentioned that he could fix the self-propeller mechanism by simply replacing the belt, although this would add another $20 to the bill. I happily agreed to have him replace the belt. At pick-up, my mower looked good as new and started right up. I have used the mower 3-4 times since and have not had any problems. An important side note, and the only slight inconvenience I can think of, is that they only accept cash. All in all a very positive experience.

Great service. Dropped off mower on Saturday mid-afternoon, and was told by Tom it would be ready within 3 hours. It was! Did more than I expected for the price quoted.

I drove 18 miles from my home to this guy because of his high marks on Angie's. Needed repair of an old Craftsman mower that just flat-out wouldn't start. Also leaking gas all over, etc. Had inherited it from my cousin and it had worked well for maybe two years. Dropped it off at 2 pm, said he'd have it ready at 4 and he did. Killed two hours taking photos of my old South St. Louis neighborhood and had a beer at Llewelyn's in the CWE. When I say "ready," the mower was still partly disassembled and he explained that it was junk. Valves and rings were shot. But he said he'd exchange it for an old Toro Model #20667 he had there -- for the same price as we'd agreed on to repair my old Craftsman. A deal I could hardly refuse. He started it and the Toro ran well. Got it home and it worked well for about five minutes. Then, the blade wouldn't engage. The lever for engaging the blade is the full-down position. As you raise the bar, the wheels then start to drive the mower forward. Try as I might, the mower would roll forward but the blade wouldn't engage, period. My son, who operated his own lawn care business when he was in college, told me on the phone that I must be doing something wrong as did the guy at Southside on the phone. Then, when I tipped it on its side, I could see that the drive belt that spins the blade had broken. Took it back to Southside on the morning of the 29th and he said, "Give me an hour." So I drove to South City Diner on Grand for coffee and, sure enough, he had it fixed in an hour. Said that the belt could have been the original. When I offered to pay for the new belt itself, he wouldn't take money. I told him I'd found him on Angie's List and I asked him how long he'd been listed on it, he said "I don't know how those things get started." The guy's a quick turnaround, often while-you-wait, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants right there on Morganford, just South of Arsenal, where to wait. Three Monkeys, Tin Can, Local Harvest Cafe, etc. Worth the trip in more ways than one, though I can't guarantee that if your old mower is junk, he'll have a back-up sitting there ready to replace it. I was just lucky in that regard. Still, he seems like a very competent and honest old fart.

Called, dropped trimmer off at place of business, was told it would be ready same day. I preferred to pick up next day. The device was started and run, I paid, thanked him and left. I believe it would have been ready the day before.

A mower I use was sputtering and I knew it had ever been serviced. When I arrived at 4pm the owner met me outside and asked what the problem was. I explained it to him and asked to also get the blades sharpened. He said he'd have it ready by 6:30pm that night. It was and the mower runs like new.

I took a pushmower that I couldnt get adjusted. The man was gruff but nice. He told me he could fix it and offered to have it done the same day. When I picked it up he told me only to use it for small jobs like a dogwalk - not an entire lawn. He said it was not the best mower for more than a dogwalk. He was right! I will definitely take my motorized mower there at the end of the season for a tuneup.

Arrived at repair shop and rung bell. He will take your mowers in the back. I dropped off my mower at about 12:30 and returned just an hour and a half later and it was completely finished! Very quick. It is now running just like new. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Heads up, he accepts cash only.

Very old mower that seem to choked after a short mow. It would stall, then eventually stop and I couldn't restart it. Took it to Frank and he said he would do his $68 tune-up service on it (which given the age of the mower seemed far too high to me) and have it ready in less than 5 hours. Mower ran like a charm for awhile, then stalled out again. I took it back to Frank who replaced a cable for me at no additional charge. Frank is a man of few words. He's quick, unassuming and quite humble. I'm a chatter, so it's awkward. He knows his stuff and will go the extra mile to fix the problem. I'm grateful I can spend my money supporting a neighborhood business.

I try to support local business and avoid big box stores as much as possible so I found this business in the yellow pages in 2005 and checked it out with the BBB. He maintained a 6 year old John Deere mower purchased in 1999 for the first time. The mower was so clean that I didn't recognize it and thought he was giving me the wrong mower. I took the mower there again for maintenance again in 2009 and it still runs like new in 2011.

They took me right in, and had me going smoothly the next day, the repair cost a little more than I was quoted initially, because a part needed to be replaced. I felt well-treated. Overall a very positive service experience.

Fast (within one day), reliable, good workmanship

I called around lunch and the guy said that if I got it there soon, I could get back same day. Took it in and it was ready by 3:30. Mower has run fine all season. I'll go back next year.

It went well. I pulled up to the storefront and the sign said open. However, I couldn't just walk in the front door because even though the door was open, the outside door (which was basically just bars) was locked. The store was dark inside. I heard something that made me walk around to the back of the store and the lawn mower repair man was in the little lot behind the store talking to a customer and looking at the customer's lawn mower. When he saw me pushing my lawn mower he acknowleged my presence and indicated that he'd be with me soon. He quickly finished up the customer and addressed my issue. I just had him sharpen the lawn mower blade. He did it on the spot by bringing out a sharpning tool and sharpening the blade while it was still on the mower.
