Massey Tuckpointing & Masonry exceeded expectations for high quality craftsmanship. Massey Tuckpointing provided great communication on the scope of work, timing of work to start and complete. Massey provided services to provide tuckpointing, add a heat shield, interior tuck pointing and repairs to the crown. Denny provided a great overview of the work being performed, answered questions honestly in layman terms that helped me fully understand the benefits of the work being provided. Thank you. I recommend Massey whole heatedly to my friends and family.

I called Massey to get a price on fixing some cracks on our brick home due to some minor ground settling. The company was great to work with. Ryan was very straightforward and personable. He seemed more interested in making certain I was informed rather than just pushing to get the job. He laid out a few options, one of which was to simply not worry about it right now, as none of the issues are pressing nor impact the structural integrity of the home. We decided not to get the work done right now, but when we do, Massey will be the first to get a call.

I called in four firms to look at the scope of the job needed to be performed and discuss what work they thought should be done and get quotes. After reviewing all proposals and comments on Angie's list of the contractors I chose Massey Tuckpointing. They weren't the cheapest nor most expensive but seemed to be the best choice for my needs. The job took seven days with the weather being extremely hot so they started early and left mid afternoon on most days. All workers were most professional and courteous. They seemed to really care about the quality of the work they performed and always gave of their time to answer questions. They put up scaffolding thirty feet in the air so naturally a lot of material feel to the ground. They had put down ground covering to catch most of the debris but a lot was still scattered around. They made a big effort of cleaning up every night before leaving and hosing down splashes on the walls. Very easy to work with them.

The fix was excellent. I wasn't extremely happy with the color of the mortar. I knew it wouldn't match exactly but the man doing it said once it dried I would hardly notice it. It is very noticeable. However, it's on the side of the house and probably no one will notice. Fixing the crack was the most important thing.

Ryan came out to do the estimate, he has a very abrasive personality, but he was on time and Massey has a reputation for doing good work so I ignored it. When the time came for the work to be done Massey showed up when they said they would and didn't leave a mess. However, they failed to complete part of the work they agreed to. I called and spoke to Matt, he apologized and quickly sent someone out to finish. Flash forward a couple months, while having some roof work done the roofers pointed out that our chimney was in need of tuckpointing. I indicated it had been done, but they showed me several areas that were in need of repair. I contacted Massey and they sent Ryan back out. My wife met with Ryan this time. Sadly Ryan treated my wife worse than he treated me. He claimed he didn't include the back part of the chimney in our original scope of work because the portion of the chimney visible from the backyard didn't look bad so he assumed the other side was okay. When my wife asked if he could inspect it he claimed he didn't have a ladder and that we take pictures and send them to him. When she offered to let him use our ladder he went to his truck and got his own (he had a ladder the whole time). He inspected the area in question and indicated that it was in need of repair. He then proceeded to tell my wife that we should have the whole top portion of the chimney tuckpointed, even though only one side was in bad shape. He left and indicated we would receive a bid shortly. It has been over a month since Ryan came back out and we have received no bid. I would not recommend using Massey. The spots they repaired look good, but they had to return twice to complete work they missed originally. They failed to fully inspect our house and tried to sell us on services we didn't need when we called them back. Ryan's attitude makes me question how they remain in business.

They sent someone out right away to provide a bid. Given it was winter, they told me that it would need to be warm enough for the work to be done. They were not the most expensive bid I received nor were they the cheapest. However, I had a great conversation with Matt before the came to give the bid and that along with both the member ratings and a personal reference, I decided to go with them. They were great! When the weather warmed up last week, they contacted me to see if I could be available for the work to be done on short notice. I was happy that I didn't have to wait until spring, They did the outside work when I was not home and I provided access for th interior the following day. They completed the work in less than the estimated time. I found the both the office and repair crew to be very professional. I would highly recommend - plus I got $50 off for being an Angie's List member!

I was a little disappointed in my experience this time (2nd time customer). I was mainly looking for cosmetic upgrades on my fireplace, which I wasn't sure if they did, but after seeing pictures of stone facing on their website, and calling and asking about it (which they said yes), I was glad because was happy with their work a couple years ago. Fast forward to appointment time, they arrived early and parked down the street so not to pressure meeting early (really liked the thoughtfulness). The appointment went fine, they inspected my chimney and pointed out area's of disrepair. We also talked about options to cosmetically upgrade my interior brick around fireplace. They said they would get back with some options (i.e. replace bad bricks, or applying stone facing). After waiting about a week I received an estimate for the actual chimney repairs, but not the cosmetic items. After asking about that quote, they responded it's not something they will handle. This was very disappointing because the whole reason for me to call and get them out there was for the cosmetic items which they said initially, and at the appointment, but then at the end said no... This was a waste of my time which would have lead me to give them D or F, but since they did a professional job on the inspection I'll compromise on the C overall.

Prior to the work starting, Massey came out and did a very thorough job of explaining the work, the process, and the level of effort. The bid layout was fantastic, including color photos of the chimney outlining the area they were going to rebuild, and a detailed explanation of what the costs include. I did my due diligence and got several bids from the well known local masonry companies, and Massey's was right in the mix competitively. What really impressed me about Massey was how they handled what happened next......as soon as they showed up and set up the scaffolding, I got a call from Matt telling me they had to stop work on the rip down because we had BATS!!! Yes, bats were living in between our chimney and our flue and had wedged in there from the gaps in the brick mortar. And so began a multi- week process for us to rid the bats before they could complete the chimney project. Throughout the entire 4-5 week delay, Massey was so accommodating and patient during what was a stressful time for us to contract a pest solutions company to get the bats out so they could finish the chimney. They left the scaffolding in place and kept in touch frequently with me each week so we could coordinate the project to re-start. At no time did I feel pressure from Massey to "hurry up" with the bat problem so they could finish. In the end after battling the rainy season, they finished up, and even picked up some additional work on the side of my house. It all looks great. VERY pleased with how Massey handled the project and the quality of the work looks great. Mortar and bricks match the rest of the house as much as it could- the brick on my house is not used anymore, so they got the best match. Will use Massey for any masonry going forward, and recommend them to others. Matt was very helpful through the process.

I vetted four Angie's List A listers and this company won the job by far: first to submit a bid, lowest bid, followed up worked with my schedule. While I just moved into the St. Louis area and didn't know any of the companies I got bids from (e.g., relied heavily on Angie's List) I will only use this company in the future. They are tops!

Massey Company's estimator and I spoke by phone before he came out to view the work and met with me at the appointment time. We discussed the scope of the work to be done, and I appreciate that he pointed out some attendant work that should be done in order to make the original job complete and lasting. I appreciate the fact that he was not afraid to point out these problem areas that I had not previously seen. He took photos, and I had an email estimate within three days. We accepted the bid, and set a date for work to begin. During our conversation, Matt reminded me that I'd have a lift parked in my front yard for several days so that the high-level work could be done safely by his crew. The day for work came and the crew was there at 7am as promised. They moved all the planter pots, porch furniture and such and explained that there would be a lot of dust and noise from the grinder work being done. I was pleased to see that this crew 'cushioned' the lift outriggers so that they would not damage the lawn. After each day, the crew cleaned up the work area, made sure to speak with me about their progress and what would take place the following day, and --get this!-- thanked me for being their customer!! This wasn't a slapdash job because the brickwork on this house has a complicated brick pattern which makes for a more detailed job than one might expect. Each day, the crew swept the driveway and my neighbor's drive as well. Outside AC units were covered, and at the end of each day, the lift was secured properly. The finish mortar work is an appropriate color match for the rest of the house and the joint work is consistent across the face of the house, even though there may have been four or so masons packing and raking the joints. At the close of the job, the exterior was washed with a compound to remove mortar residue and then it was sealed. I don't mind paying for quality work because I believe that I'm paying for a lasting job. It's a pleasure to see the house looking this good, and knowing that it's much more solid and now ready for more years into the future. Neighbors have complimented the color of the mortar, the consistency of the joint work and I have been pleased to recommend Massey Company to them for their future needs. A small weak area became noticeable recently and when I called Matt to ask if he could come look at it, he asked me to send him some photos. When these had been sent, he and I spoke over the phone and agreed that he'd send a mason to address this area as his schedule permitted. I told him to just call me; I'd be happy to see his mason on the job any time he could be here. This job wasn't large, but it has been done, once again. to perfection.
Description of Work: Massey Tuckpointing rebuilt the brick chimney and ice cap with its original setbacks, replacing several damaged brick with same style and color, and tuck pointed the face of my 1930s English style two story brick and stone home. A second job was done on short notice to address a small area of crumbling mortar that was likely admitting water.

That job was great. Guys were professional and on time. However, on July 30th, we attempted to schedule some additional work, the email was received, an auto-response was generated by their company indicating a 2 day call back. Nothing...for four business days. Finally today we sent another email asking if that email was still working. It went to another email address (another business) and when I inquired as to the different name, I was told (rudely) that this was a personal email address (associated with the company) and what did I need. I explained I was waiting to hear back and was asked "on what?". I then explained I'd sent an email requesting an estimate on the work on July 30th and never heard back despite the 2 day promise. Then Michelle Massey responded there was a weekend and they'd been busy with call volume and her office manager would call me tomorrow - business day 5. Thoroughly rude and unprofessional from an owner. Evidently repeat business is a pipe dream for them - this would have been our 3rd job for Massey. A few issues like this from the office (poor response time, incorrect waiver form, etc) but never an issue with the work crew. Great guys - too bad management isn't as professional.

I would like respond by saying we have many repeat customers. We are very busy and respond to our requests as soon as we can. Many previous customers just call the office to set up a time for us to look at additional work as well as there is an office manager who man's our calls each day. We had over 1400 requests this month and keep up as much as we can to respond to them as quickly as we can.

I had water coming down the face of my chimney. I was told by a roofer that I needed to have tuckpointing on my chimney. I called Massey Tuckpointing for an estimate. When I called to make the appointment for an estimate I spoke with Michelle. I told her that I had water coming down the face of my chimney and wanted to get an estimate for tuckpointing. She told me that she would send someone out. I asked her for a time and date and was told they do not give a day or time and just come out- 1ST mistake! DEMAND THAT YOU ARE PRESENT DURING ESTIMATES OR BIDS AND STAY AWAY FROM COMPANIES THAT CANNOT ACCOMMODATE THIS REQUEST. They called the day before the work was going to be done and told me the 2 employees would be at my house between 9 and 10am and would call before coming. They showed up at 7:55 A.M with NO call before. I stopped the 2 employees in the driveway and spoke with Ryan. I said because I wasn't there for the estimate that I want to make sure that the work they were doing is going to solve my problem of water coming in. I was told by Ryan that it would. Well it rained within 48 hours of them completing the job and I still had water coming in. (Job was completed Friday and I left a message on Sunday about the incoming water). They never returned my call, so I called back on Monday and spoke with Matt, the Office Manager. I told him that I still had water coming in and needed this corrected. He told me that it must be a problem with something else besides the tuckpointing and that it states at the bottom of the contract that they do not guarantee water from coming in. Ok, well when I called and spoke to Michelle Massey when booking the appointment and told her my issue was water, she could have stated that they don't guarantee to fix water problems and when the workers showed up to do the work they should have told me that they don't guarantee to stop water from coming in. Instead, they took the job and led me to believe my issue was going to be corrected. When trying to resolve this issue with them I was told that their long-term employee of approximately 36 months (I guess that is long for them) would never have said that it would stop the water and that there must have been a miscommunication on MY part. Instead of working to get the issue resolved, Matt the office manager wanted to spend an hour on the phone demanding that it is not their problem, that I was just looking for something for free, and that I should blame the roofer who told me I needed tuckpointing, not them. Instead of trying to resolve anything, Matt spent an hour on the phone deflecting any type of responsibility. On top of that he was condescending, aggressive, and rude. None of the owners ever called to see how they could resolve the issue, the only time I heard from Michelle Massey was when she was in the background yelling over Matt that none of her employees would ever tell me that it would stop water from coming in. I hired this company to fix a problem, and I was misled into thinking that their services would fix my issue. Instead I spent a lot of money and still have my problem. I asked if Massey tuckpointing was going to do anything to resolve the issue and I was told they would not and that I was just looking for something for free. I can't comment on their workmanship b/c my issue is not with their workmanship. This is the WORST customer service I have ever encountered!..from the owners to the "voice" of their company Matt, the office manager. There are plenty of other options for a good tuckpointer. Instead, find a company that doesn't mislead, provides good customer service, and ACTUALLY appreciates their customers...not just their money.

Homeowner clearly states in her response we completed our scope of work and her complaint is not about workmanship. Upon review our of the chimney at the Schmoll residence it was determined that the chimney did have missing mortar and was in need of repair (as recommended by the “5 roofers” who said there was not a problem with the flashing). We always allow homeowners to be present when we come out to give an estimate. However, due to peoples various schedules, we also state that we look at 100’s of chimneys per year and we also attach pictures with a detailed scope of work to the proposal so you do not have to be there for us to look at it. Also if customers have any questions we can address them before you sign and accept the proposal along with the scope of work. The homeowner also acknowledges, that it is printed on the front of the proposal, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE TO STOP WATER LEAKS. Please read all of our previous reviews regarding our customer service and workmanship. Unfortunately we cannot make everyone happy.
