Kalven is a friendly guy, but we didn't get a professional 'vibe' off him. We had originally contacted him to bid another job in our kitchen, but were uncomfortable with his knowledge and his especially low quote. We did think he would be ideal (due to price) to do a simpler job in our basement and figured that was a job that would be difficult to screw up. The price was too good to be true. After a half-down deposit, he finally showed up to spend a bulk of day framing part of one area. He then took a couple days to come back and do some drywall. This was the point we decided not to continue. In our opinion, there was no way this job was going to come out well. The craftsmanship was pretty horrid. We decided to cut bait and our losses at our initial 325 downpayment, but he insisted on an additional 50 to cover his labor costs (which we will have do re-do at our expense). His work was amateurish and had we not had kids home alone for the subsequent few days, we wouldn't have paid him an additional dime, much less try and recoup some of our investment. We didn't want a disgruntled contractor to worry about. Short story was that the cost was too good to be true and we will now pay the price. His work was of poor quality and there was really no upside to any of our transaction.
