I am a general contractor and have rental properties. J & J Masonry can do it all. From small jobs to major gut rehabs. They are reliable, courteous and want the customer satisfied with their work, which is always the case.
Description of Work: From small Tuckpointing jobs to total 100% of a renovation project, J & J Masonry are the best. They do small maintenance work and gut rehabs. They install stone sills, build brick walls and do clean, good tuckpointing. They are friendly, polite and reliable. They mean what they say and say what they mean. Communication is clear and work is a true caliber of a tradesperson and crafts person. I am most happy to refer them.

I left them a message through Angie's list, but did not get any response. A few days later I therefore proceeded to leave them a voicemail because their website said that calling was the best way to get a rapid answer. Well, I'm still waiting. I don't know if the lack of response is because they thought this was too far from their location (they are based in Wentzville and we are in Clayton), but simple professional courtesy would have warranted a response to that effect. This lack of professionalism unfortunately does not augur well for the quality of their work, and I will certainly never try to contact them again.

Sir I apologize. It has been 3 business days since your call. The angies list message was on sunday, outside of business hours, in the labor day weekend. I am out of state caring for my elderly mother. She is in poor health and my time with her is limited so I chose to give her my undivided attention. I fly back Tuesday morning. My intention was to return your phone call upon my arrival back in St. Louis. We proudly service the Clayton area with quality work on a regular basis.

Very well. J & J provided outstanding craftsmanship in construction of the mailbox to our specifications. They were professional and easy to do business with. I would certainly use them again for any services that they provide relative to masonry, etc. They lived up to their many consecutive years of Super Service Award winner status.

As you can see above they did not follow thru with the verbal bid so I hired someone else. I don't think they should be on Angie's List.
Description of Work: We needed some tuck pointing done. He came right out and gave me a verbal quote and took my email address. He told me he would send a written bid but I never heard from him again. I called up another company and their bid was very close to his and I hired them to do the work. He had my phone number also - why didn't he follow thru.

J & J Masonry Restoration & Chimney Repair did a tremendous job. Tremendous. And I called him, the owner, I told him, "What a wonderful crew. These guys were outstanding." And he said, "Oh my gosh, now I gotta go take them all for breakfast." But he said "thank you". They were wonderful. They were about 5, 6, or 7 and they were really nice kids. They were so nice my wife made brownies for them each day. It took them two days. My wife made brownies for them because they were so good. They were wonderful. They were a wonderful group to work with. Extremely pleasant workers and just very professional. Definitely, absolutely, yes I would use them again. I highly recommend them.

Great experience. These guys did great work. The repaired sections look awesome. They cleaned up after they were done. I would definitely use them again for any tuckpointing or wall reconstruction.
Description of Work: The top section of the front wall of my Tower Grove South home needed to be re-laid. I was worried because the brick pattern contained lots of detail and I was worried about redoing the front of my home. I've seen some bad ones in the neighborhood and it can make the house look worse. J&J came out and gave me an honest review of the work that needed to be done and based on their reviews, their website and their quote I chose them.

I was told I would receive a quote within a week. It has now been months and I have not heard back from them. If they weren't interested in the job, I wish they would have been upfront with me versus making me wait around. Not a very professional way to leave things, and therefore, even if I am contacted I would not use them.

J&J - specifically Jim Moore - was professional & prompt. He responded to my inquiry quickly and provided a quote quickly. Due to weather delays it took a couple of weeks to get the work started, but Jim set expectations on that up front & kept me up to date on when his crew would arrive. The crew arrived as scheduled, completed the work in a couple of days as planned & did not leave a mess. We have a fenced backyard & wanted to leave our dog outside during the process & there was some miscommunication regarding keeping the gate shut so our dog would not run. That was a pretty minor issue...just one of those things you have to think about when workers are on your property. After the work was complete, Jim's business mgr completed a quality assurance check & determined there was some follow up work required. Jim called & asked when it would be convenient for his team to return & finish the job & apologized for the inconvenience. Frankly I doubt I would have ever discovered the mistake as it was mostly a visual/aesthetic issue on the backside of the chimney. I was impressed with their attention to detail. J&J Masonry was not the cheapest bid I received & I chose them over other contractors based on their reviews on Angie's List. I was not disappointed, will use J&J again if needed, and would recommend them to others.

I received my bid and gave my approval. I was told it would depend upon the weather and it would probably be at least 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I called just to see how their schedule was going. The weather cooperated and they were able to get to my house within the next 2 weeks. I was not home when they arrived but they got right to work. When I arrived, I was told that one other side really needed to be replaced and although the fourth side could last maybe 5 years, they went ahead and took it down too. I was fine with this. The crew chief had to go get more bricks but his truck was hit in an accident so could not bring the bricks that day. They wrapped my chimney area against weather problems and said would be back on Monday. Before leaving the firebox was repaired. They arrived on time Monday and it took most of the day. They cleaned up my roof, yard and driveway completely. The chimney looked great. When presented with the bill, I expected an upcharge for the additional work they did but they charged me the contract price. That was a very pleasant surprise. I will recommend J & J Masonry to all who need such work done. They were extremely professional.
Description of Work: The bricks on my chimney were deteriorating and water had flowed down into my basement. I also had narrow cracks in my firebox that I wanted sealed. They gave me a bid to replace 2 sides and the top and fill in the cracks in the firebox. I thought their bid was very reasonable.

The J&J folks showed up a couple of times to work out what to do and how to do it. Then there was a bit of a delay while they finished other jobs. It would have been nice had they been able to come sooner but they were up front with me as to when they'd be able to get there and were willing to work through email which I find a more convenient form of communication rather than playing phone tag. They were done in about a day and a half and the wall looks excellent. Now to find that hobbit door to go on it.
Description of Work: J&J replaced a small section of wall under our porch that was failing. I had this kind of idea that perhaps it would be interesting to put a small door in the wall since there was void space under the porch and the wall wasn't load bearing that could then provide access to a storage area for garbage can storage and other things. From just a quick conversation and standing there in front of the wall the guys at J&J were able to quickly grasp what I was thinking of and built an excellent wall with an archway perfect for a 'hobbit' door.

I began my own chimney rebuilding project, but contacted J&J Masonry when I encountered some unexpected situations and was prepared to let a professional to take over. Jim Moore said he could come by the next day and he arrived as scheduled. He clearly explained three options, including pros and cons, and estimated the cost and schedule for each. I was ready to award him the contract, but I was under too much time pressure and Jim's services were booked past my needed completion date, so I proceeded with the job myself. I was impressed with Jim's forthright evaluation and solutions. Obviously plenty of other consumers are too! J&J Masonry will be the first company I call if/when I have another issue with my old brick house.

They're very nice guys. They're trying their best but I wasn't 100% satisfied. They did try to fix the stuff that I complained about. The job took a long time. They took well over a month to do the job. Our house was built in 1895 and it is a Victorian home. The bricks are different from the others. The mortar is different from the modern mortar. You have to use a specific mortar and you shoud not use grinding tools on the house. You should grind the mortar by hand. They said they will use the grinding tools and it will be fine. They said they will grind it out to the specific depth as required. When we looked at the work, we came out and looked at it. We realized that they were not grinding it out deep enough. They only did half an inch. I told them that it was in the contract so they have to do it. They ended up doing it. The next day when I came home and discovered they were using the grinding machines to grind the mortars and seal the breaks, the guy that they had did the grinding of the vertical joints of the bricks on either side. He ruined a whole bunch of the bricks. They ended up replacing the bricks. They had a very competitive bid too. The guys who own the business are good. One or two of the guys who work for them do not care or do not have the talent. The management was responsive to my complaint.

I just moved into a brick house, knowing that there was some amount of tuckpointing that needed to be done. I contacted four tuckpointing/masonry companies, and gave them the same spiel: I don't know how much tuckpointing is needed, but I'm really only looking to do what truly needs it right now; if you do a good job, I'll hire you again in subsequent years. I feel that J&J was the only contractor who *truly* gave me a bid for what was asked. He came back with a proposal for $2425. At that point, I mentioned that our building inspector had expressed concerns about the lintel above a quadruple window on the front of the house, and I'd like him to replace it. He provided me with a second bid. None of the other contractors I asked said they did lintel replacement. During the lintel replacement, it was discovered that the lintel was actually part of an I-beam holding up part of the inner structure of the house. Fortunately, most of the beam was in good condition. They cut out the part above the window and added another piece (I forgot the name, but it wasn't the L-shaped lintel they originally brought out). I did request them to come back out and apply more acid wash to the bricks until they looked clean. I also asked them to caulk where the l new lintel met the window, and to take a piece of plywood they had used to cover the window but left on site. They answered all requests promptly. All told, I was happy with the experience. Jim and I exchanged 48 emails during the process, and he very patiently answered my numerous questions and requests. I know that's a lot, but it was my first time getting tuckpointing done, and it's an important purchase.
Description of Work: Tuckpointing the vast majority of the front of the house; spot tuckpointing on the rest of the house; replaced and retarred water shed along one side of house; removed rusting portion of I-beam that also served as a lintel for a quadruple window in front of the house

Mr. Moore was courteous, punctual, cooperative, and accommodating. I have a tricky schedule and he was willing to work around it since I wanted to be home when the repairs were going on. He stayed within the budget I had for the repairs (required at insurance's "request"), and helped by adjusting the work needed to stay in budget. He stayed in communication with me so that I knew when to expect him and his team and they didn't even leave a mess behind in my house. Would definitely rehire him.

On 3/25/15 requested an estimate to inspect, advise condition of brick work on front of our house, rehang 1 shutter that had fallen off and inspect remaining shutters to be sure they were firmly attached. Spoke with Jim Moore who promptly scheduled an appt for 3/27/15 to estimate the job. On 3/27/15 Jim inspected the job to be done and called to discuss the estimate. Masonry repairs are very costly. Since our masonry was in great condition he recommended having a handyman rehang, fix the shutters since they could do the job at a lower more reasonable cost. Jim also was able to refer us to the name of an excellent handyman who has personally done work for Jim's mother. My husband and I appreciated his candor about the price he would have to charge us and the fact he could refer us to an excellent handyman. If and when we would need masonry work done I would call J & J Masonry.

Called J and J. Asked they check chimney for possible cause of leak at fireplace. Person I spoke to consulted his partner. It was determined over the phone cause of leak was probably due to flashing. I explained the roofing and flashing had been replaced less than a year ago. Leak continued. Roofer rechecked flashing. Said it was OK. He applied waterproofing to chimney. Leak continued. Called J and J to see if the cause of leak was due to problem with chimney.

I suffered damage from another contractor overloading an old building roof, which bowed and cracked all four masonry walls of this detached garage building. J & J came to advise on damage and quote rebuild of worst bowed concrete block wall, and repair of cracks in other walls (mostly along grout lines). After the first contractor's carpentry subs repaired the roof structure and got the walls back to vertical, J & J came out and repaired all 4 walls by grinding all cracked grout lines and the few blocks that were cracked, and re-grouted all areas where needed, inside and out of each wall. Superb professionalism, and they're easy to work with. This is 3rd property where I've used their services. So glad I found them. You will be, too!

The tuckpointing looks good. There was a 4-6 weeks delay attributed to the ground being wet with scant communication with me during the delay. The work was done promptly and well once it started. The price seems fair. Some landscaping nearby seems to have been killed by the acid-wash process.

My brick house had been spot pointed before I bought it years ago. It wasn't done very well, but seemed to do the job. Last year the plaster inside my front wall was starting to bubble up due to water leakage. I called Jim who came out the next day for a look. He was super friendly and professional. I never felt like he was trying to sell me something I didn't need. He emailed me the next day with a very fair estimate. I received estimates from two other companies, but felt I could trust J&J to do the work well. Jim's business partner came out to do the work. He was also friendly and professional. He arrived exactly when he said he would, and gave me some time to talk things over. He showed me where he was going to remove the poorly done joints, and how he was going to do it. He fixed various areas around the house, and the patched areas are nearly a perfect match to the original mortar. I've seen a lot of bad tuckpointing jobs, so I honestly couldn't believe how well it matched. I'm really happy with my experience, and would definitely use them again.
